Richards sidelined with 'frustrating' injuryUSMNT star missed 3-straight gamesTimeline for return revealedWHAT HAPPENED?

The U.S. international, who had played in 16-straight matches for The Eagles prior to his knee injury, is finally set to return to the pitch. The central defender and Oliver Glasner's side are targeting a return against West Ham United this weekend.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT RICHARDS SAID

“I think frustrating would be a good word for it,” Richards said ahead of their Liverpool match last weekend.

“I feel like I worked hard over the last two seasons that I’ve been here and I think I was finally reaping the benefit of that. It’s always nice playing games.

“I have a knee injury. Hopefully, what we’re aiming for is West Ham. I’m just kind of taking it day by day, hoping that it continues to heal and that’s what I’m aiming for, at least, is the West Ham game.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Palace pulled off a shocking 1-0 victory last weekend at Anfield without Richards available, but in the two matches prior, they fell to Bournemouth and Manchester City. During his 16-match run with the Eagles, they pulled off a result in nine of the matches, keeping two clean sheets.

With his potential return at the weekend now on the cards, the Eagles could receive a massive defensive boost.

Gakpo distracted from just how good 8/10 Liverpool star was vs LASK

Liverpool eased to victory against LASK in the Europa League to confirm qualification to the round of 16, with Toulouse's failure to defeat Union Saint-Gilloise confirming Jurgen Klopp's side as group winners.

It was a largely comfortable affair that showcased the Reds' blistering attacking power, albeit if the hosts did squander a score of opportunities.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

But nonetheless, the rotated rearguard proved its worth and Caoimhin Kelleher was a wall between the sticks, making some stellar saves with Alisson out injured.

Cody Gakpo was the shining star in attack, however, with his talismanic performance clinching qualification.

Cody Gakpo vs LASK in numbers

Gakpo needed that one. The Dutchman has not been under-par this season, per se, but has struggled to cement himself in Klopp's side with a statement showing.

It came tonight, with a brace lifting his seasonal tally to six goals and an assist from just ten starting appearances across all competitions, with reporter Neil Jones noting the 24-year-old's "standout" display.

With Diogo Jota set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an issue during last weekend's draw against Manchester City, Gakpo's return to goalscoring form came at the apt moment, with his boots sure to be needed over the coming weeks.

Liverpool's "unplayable" academy star could soon usurp Gakpo and Nunez

Jurgen Klopp could soon unearth Liverpool’s next big thing…

ByRosie Tudball Nov 22, 2023

The winter period is gruelling at the best of times, and Klopp will truly be delighted with his side's constancy despite rotation, with Harvey Elliott proving once again that he can make the No. 8 role his own in the engine room.

Harvey Elliott's performance vs LASK

Elliott was a mainstay for Liverpool last season and completed 46 appearances across all competitions; this term, he has started just once in the Premier League but has been integral in cup competitions, glittering once again last night.

As per Sofascore, the dynamic gem took 75 touches across the 90 minutes he was on the pitch, making three key passes, unleashing four shots (forcing one particularly good save from Tobias Tobias Okiki Lawal), succeeding with his sole dribble attempt, and winning two of his four contested ground duels.

Noted for his "visionary" distribution by TNT Sports' commentator Ian Darke, the £40k-per-week Elliott has taken some impressive strides this season and looks mature and at home in the centre of the park, running the show with his creative, controlled presence.

Handing him an 8/10 match rating, the Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle was effusive in his remarks over the 20-year-old's display: 'Busy and effective on the right of midfield three, picking up a lot of loose balls and fired one free-kick wide and forced good Lawal save. Fine display.'

harvey-elliott-liverpool

It was by no means a flawless night for the rising star, who did lose the ball 22 times as he looked to influence the flow, but Liverpool supporters – if they are not already – really should start getting excited.

Elliott is making incremental progress and, with the pieces starting to slot together, could play a central role in the Anfield side's efforts over the coming months.

West Indies' last chance to salvage Bangladesh tour

Having lost the Test and then the ODI series, the visitors will look to spring a surprise on Bangladesh in the T20I series decider

The Preview by Mohammad Isam21-Dec-2018Big PictureHaving wrapped up the Test and ODI series, Bangladesh will aim to secure the T20I series as well when they face West Indies in the third T20I. After West Indies won the first T20I, Bangladesh hit back in the second to force this series into a decider. The third T20I will be West Indies’ last chance to salvage something from this tour.Bangladesh had a near-perfect batting performance in the second T20I, with Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das getting off to quick starts before Soumya Sarkar took on the bowling. After a short burst of wickets, Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan kept Bangladesh afloat in the last seven overs, putting on an unbroken 91-run stand for the fifth wicket.Bangladesh’s bowlers also had a decent outing, particularly Shakib, who said that he was surprised with his five-wicket haul in dewy conditions. Mustafizur Rahman and Abu Hider, who had leaked runs, will have to find ways to keep West Indies quiet in the decider. Mehidy Hasan’s offspin will also be central to Bangladesh’s bowling in the middle overs.Shai Hope has been West Indies’ most consistent limited-overs batsman on this tour, but he hasn’t got enough support from Darren Bravo and Evin Lewis. After impressing in the Test series, Shimron Hetmyer hasn’t made a substantial score in the limited-overs series. Rovman Powell, though, returned to form with a fifty in Dhaka and will be key for West Indies in the death overs.Oshane Thomas and Sheldon Cottrell will have to find ways to keep Bangladesh’s scoring rate down, while Fabian Allen, West Indies’ most economical bowler in the second game, will be looking to exploit the conditions if the visitors bowl first.Form guideBangladesh WLWWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)West Indies LWLLLIn the spotlightMahmudullah’s counter-attacking 43 not out, after Bangladesh had lost three quick wickets in the second game, tilted the balance in the hosts’ favour. 'There is an edge between us' – Phil Parkinson opens up on rivalry with Stockport after Ryan Reynolds and Rob Elhenney's side beat League Two champions

Phil Parkinson speaks openly about the rivalry between Wrexham and Stockport County as the clubs climb the EFL ladder together.

Wrexham & Stockport have become rivalsTwo title races in three seasonsParkinson explains how it will continueWHAT HAPPENED?

In addition to the relative geographic proximity – about 50 miles separate the working class towns – adding spice, Parkinson explained that the clubs are likely to be competing for the same players in the transfer window this summer as they each build a squad to be competitive in League One.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

This was the second time in three seasons that Wrexham and Stockport have battled for a league title. Back in 2021-22, when there was only one automatic promotion place out of the National League, it was the latter who were victorious as Wrexham fell in the play-offs. Stockport then ended up losing last season's League Two play-off final as Wrexham won the National League, serving to reunite them. It was predicted from the start of the campaign that they would go head-to-head once more, which proved to be the case. Both sealed automatic promotion on the same day, but Stockport got the last laugh by topping it off with the league title, despite losing at the Racecourse on the final day.

WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Via , Parkinson said: "There is an edge between us and Stockport after the year we had in the National League. We have been progressing together. Everyone has said they are ahead of us in terms of that progression. They’ve had longer in [League Two]. Also, they’ve had longer with their owners and longer to work on their infrastructure. But we are catching them quickly.

"Stockport are as ambitious as ourselves. We probably get a bit more publicity because of [], but I am sure we will be competing with them in the summer for players.

"This has happened in the past, and I’m sure it will happen again. We have to make sure we get our targets in position, but Stockport will be fighting hard to get those players as well."

DID YOU KNOW?

Rather like Wrexham with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Stockport have massively benefitted from new ownership in recent years after previously falling on hard times. The club was taken over by local businessman Mark Stott in 2020, a year after promotion out of the sixth tier National League North, leading to huge investments being made in infrastructure and two further promotions in quick succession.

Everton want to sign "humble" Italy star who’s at the peak of his powers

Everton are "interested" in completing the signing of an Italy international at the peak of his powers, according to a new transfer update.

Everton transfer news

The Blues may be going through a challenging period at the moment, in terms of their 10-point deduction and ongoing issues surrounding the takeover, but Sean Dyche and his players are keeping spirits high. Sunday's 2-0 win at home to Chelsea was their third triumph in a row in the Premier League, and it means Everton are now out of the relegation zone and into 17th place, despite the huge deficit that has come their way because of a financial breach.

With each passing week, the more it looks as though relegation to the Championship is unlikely this season, but Dyche won't want to rest on his laurels, potentially making key signings during the January transfer window. In terms of long-term additions, Everton are believed to be interested in signing 17-year-old Aodhan Doherty, who is currently playing for Linfield in Northern Ireland.

When it comes to older targets who could come straight in and do a job, Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a move to Goodison Park, with the Manchester City midfielder surely desperate to seal a move away from the Etihad in January, with Euro 2024 around the corner and regular playing time needed before then.

Everton "interested" in Federico Gatti

According to a new update from Calciomercato [via Sport Witness], Everton are keen on signing Juventus defender Federico Gatti, having shown interest in him for several months now.

It is stated that the Blues are "interested" in acquiring the 25-year-old's signature, as was the case last summer, although Nottingham Forest are also seen as potential suitors. In fact, Gatti's father admitted over the weekend that his son was wanted by a pair of Premier League clubs at that point, with the suspicion Everton were in the mix:

"In the summer a couple of English clubs wanted him. I always thought that the Premier League was a type of football suited to him. But my son sees it differently: he has always and only wanted Juventus. He did very well, he never liked transfers against his will, like when Torino gave him to Alessandria at 14 and then when Alessandria didn’t think he was up to the mark."

This does suggest that Gatti could be difficult to sign for Everton, considering how content he seems at Juve, but he could be a great signing if they get a deal over the line.

The three-cap Italy international is someone who is bang in his prime as a footballer, considering he is in his mid-20s and should remain in and around his peak for the next five years or so, and the Blues target's market value has shot up hugely in recent times, currently sitting at an all time high of £10m.

A player who has recently been hailed for being "humble" and a leader by example by teammate Danilo, Gatti has started 12 Serie A games at centre-back this season, scoring three goals along the way, and could provide great competition for James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite.

Vince, Silk destroy Heat to lift Sixers to second

The duo shared a 94-run stand for the fourth wicket to lift Sixers to 177 before Abbott and Curran sent Heat packing for 98

The Report by Sam Perry20-Jan-2019The Sixers easily disposed of the Heat in Sydney on Sunday, led by a sizzling James Vince innings and a tame Heat reply. The Englishman made 75 from 45 deliveries, enabling the Sixers to post an imposing 177. After slumping to 2 for 16 after four, the Heat weren’t ever able to make a dent. The result moves the Sixers to ten points and second position, while the Heat remain rooted to seventh position with seven points. While enough time remains in the tournament for both sides to improve their position, a defeat was going to make matters difficult for the losing outfit.Sixers lay the foundationThe Heat won the bat flip and elected to field, leaving the Sixers to negotiate a wicket that appeared to be a fraction slow at first sight.Josh Philippe, promoted to open with Daniel Hughes, found the boundary four times from the first nine deliveries of the match before skying a Josh Lalor slower ball and departing for 17.Hughes kept the score rattling along, taking 13 from Jack Prestwidge’s first over, but soon departed when another Lalor slower ball – this one at 104kmph – had the opener dragging a pull shot on to his stumps. At 2 for 42 after the Powerplay, Henriques and Vince took up the mantle. The latter was able to free his arms regularly to find the rope as a solid partnership loomed. But an Henriques top-edge saw Lalor scoot around the edge of the third man boundary to take a good catch, arresting the Sixers’ momentum and bringing Jordan Silk to the crease.Getty ImagesVince and Silk take the game awayAs the Tasmania opener played himself in, Vince looked to accelerate, peppering the short boundary and providing plenty of work for Brendan Doggett and Prestwidge. Some solid boundary riding was interrupted when Doggett dropped a huge skier, and from there Vince stepped up a gear. He brought his fifty up in 35 balls, and was chief architect in setting up the Sixers total. It wasn’t without luck, as he was then dropped a second time by Doggett, this time after slogging Mitch Swepson to cow corner. The second was simpler than the first, and was painfully followed by a Vince six into the O’Reilly Stand. At this point, Silk joined the fray. Using all areas of the crease, he was consistently able to find runs through the leg side, at one point taking a Ben Cutting over for 17, as the Sixers closed in a total of 170-plus. With so many wickets in hand, Vince and Silk entered helter-skelter mode, before Vince eventually perished for 75 from 45 balls, caught after attempting to reverse sweep Mujeeb.Silk followed soon after, crabbing across too far as Lalor took his leg stump, handing the Heat pacer his third wicket. His fourth came after Alex Ross took a great catch running in from the deep after Tom Curran skied one to leg, and he then claimed a fifth – the only five-for of the tournament – after Jack Edwards was caught at long-off. It meant Lalor had 5 for 26, great reward for a spell that expertly mixed cutters and quicker deliveries. The Heat were never in itSteve O’Keefe opened the bowling and could hardly have started his team off better. He bowled Max Bryant with the fourth ball of the over, before containing Chris Lynn to finish with a wicket maiden. Ben Dwarshuis conceded one from his opening over, before O’Keefe returned and yielded only two.At 1 for 4 from three overs, the Heat needed to make a move. Bash Brothers Inc were able to combine for eleven from Dwarshuis’ next over, but Lynn came unstuck from Sean Abbott’s first ball, heaving one straight in the dewy air, leaving the ball to be well-held by Edwards. It was largely a run a ball for the period thereafter, which left the Heat needing nearly 12 an over with only eight overs gone. With the pressure mounting, Lloyd Pope then produced a delivery of quality,, enticing Jimmy Peirson from his crease, spinning it past the bat and allowing Phillipe to effect a sharp stumping. All that stood between the Sixers and a much-needed win was McCullum, and it was the flame-haired leggie, Pope, who picked him up. On 27 from 31, McCullum tried to sweep Pope in front of square, but sliced it all the way to Silk on the deep midwicket boundary, as he clasped it tight into his chest. The task was insurmountable from thereon, and the Heat’s batting slumped as a result. They lost wickets at regular intervals, with only Ben Cutting providing a sliver of light with a bright 28 before he was comprehensively bowled by Tom Curran, who led an excellent Sixers bowling performance, picking up 3 for 16.

Leeds talks to sign Kerem Akturkoglu collapse as Galatasaray refuse to sell

With Christmas approaching, Leeds United find themselves third in the Championship table as they look to gain promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt following last year's relegation.

Right now, the gap to the automatic promotion spots stands at a significant ten points, with Leeds losing ground to the top two after a defeat at Sunderland and a 1-1 draw at home to Coventry. It looks as if Daniel Farke's side may have to be content with a play-off place, but history has shown that path is fraught with danger.

With the right incoming business in January, Leeds will hope to make a fresh push towards Leicester and Ipswich, and ensure they're looking up rather than down in the second half of the season. Already, though, Farke has encountered a blow, with the club walking away empty-handed after talks to sign a winger in January.

Leeds hold talks for Galatasaray star Akturkoglu

Earlier this week, Turkish outlet Fanatik reported that Leeds were among the teams to "frequently contact" the management of Galatasaray's Kerem Akturkoglu, with Italian club Lazio also named as a potential suitor. The club's interest in making a move in the January transfer window had apparently escalated in talks over the past fortnight.

Akturkoglu, 25, joined Galatasaray three years ago from 24 Erzincanspor, and while he's predominantly a left winger, he can also play as a second striker and on the right of the front three (via Transfermarkt).

Akturkoglu transfer "vetoed" by Buruk

Now however, Beyaz Gazette claims that Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has spoken to both Akturkoglu and his equally coveted teammate Sacha Boey, who plays as a right-back, and informed them they won't be allowed to leave in January.

Buruk has exercised his right to veto the proposed moves away, and told the two to wait until the end of the season, with the Istanbul outfit currently level on points with Fenerbahce at the top of the table and also looking to secure a place in the Europa League round of 16 in February's play-off round.

It doesn't look like either player will try to force their way out either, because their reaction to the manager's blunt message has apparently been positive. It's a shame that Leeds won't be able to sign a player dubbed "Football's Harry Potter" by journalist Sam Cunningham (a nickname he justified by mimicking the use of wand as he celebrated a goal), at least until next summer.

Akturkoglu has consistenly put up excellent numbers for his side, scoring 31 goals and providing 35 assists since the start of the 2021/22 season (via Transfermarkt). This season, he's managed eight apiece in all competitions, none more notable than his goals in both of Galatasaray's Champions League group-stage meetings against Manchester United. Those strikes helped Buruk's side qualify for the Europa League and dump Man United out of Europe altogether.

As of the start of November, Akturkoglu was tied with Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr for the most assists by players in Europe's top 10 leagues and domestic cup competitions in 2023 with 19, and a big part of his threat is his crossing (via Zach Lowy).

Using his pace – Barcelona manager Xavi called him "very fast" after a Europa League encounter in 2021,via Goal, he's able to get down the line and fire the ball into the penalty area. Indeed, he ranks fifth in the Super Lig for crosses per game this season at 1.7 (via WhoScored).

He would have been an electrifying watch at Elland Road, but maybe there's hope that this one gets revived at the end of the season.
