Fabrizio Romano: Arsenal close to new contract for player Arteta loves

Arsenal look set to seal a new Emirates Stadium deal for one Gunners player who Mikel Arteta has spoken highly of, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Arsenal’s January window

Edu Gaspar didn’t make any new signings for Arteta during the winter transfer market, with the emphasis instead on moving a number of players out of the club. Alex Runarsson, Lino Sousa and Miguel Azeez all left on permanent deals, whereas Tyreece John-Jules, Mika Biereth, Charles Sagoe Jr, Omar Rekik, Khayon Edwards and Zane Monlouis all went out on loan.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

Arsenal could have spent in the January transfer window without breaching FFP rules, with financial expert Stefan Borson saying:

“You have a combination of teams who have chosen not to spend, so that’s teams like Arsenal. Because Arsenal could have spent if they wanted.

"If they were to invest in the necessary equity, they could push their limit up to the £105m from the £15m that it is now. But they opted to stay out of the market.

"Well it’s always very, very hard to calculate the exact amount. Certainly tens of millions pounds on a player – they could have bought the striker that everybody thinks they need. If they would have chosen to, it would have required the owners to have put in a very considerable amount of equity.”

However, Arteta’s focus now will be on the pitch, but it looks as if Edu will have the time to wrap up a new deal for one specific Arsenal player over the coming weeks.

Takehiro Tomiyasu contract update

According to Romano, the Gunners are planning to complete details of a new deal for Takehiro Tomiyasu, with talks already at an advanced stage.

The 25-year-old’s current deal in north London expires next year, so it is good to see the club looking to extend, protecting the player’s value in the process.

The Japan international hasn’t had the best of seasons on a personal level, missing large parts of the campaign through injury. He’s started just 10 games in all competitions but has come in for praise from Arteta earlier in the campaign, with the Spaniard hailing the versatile defender.

“Yeah, he (Tomiyasu) was terrific in Seville. I think he played a really, really good game when he came on against Chelsea as well.

“Tomi is a player that everybody loves in there. He’s always the first (in training) and he’s always the last out. You tell him to do something and he will give his life for it.

“He’s an exceptionally professional player who gives us a versatility and qualities that nobody else has in the squad. For me he’s a really important player.”

The USMNT succumbed to an embarrassing 5-1 defeat to Colombia and social media was ablaze asking for Berhalter's dismissal. However, the Stars and Stripes boss has brushed off this criticism.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT BERHALTER SAID

Berhalter, when questioned about the significance of achieving specific results to secure his position for the 2026 World Cup, said: "I don't think I'm the right person to answer that question but what I would say is that we do see this as a building block. We see this group as a talented group, a group that's able to do good things".

He further expressed his optimism and added: "I think we can beat top teams, but we have to go show it. We've talked a lot about doing it and for us it's really about the performance, going out there and having a solid performance that you putting yourself in position to actually go ahead and win."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Berhalter has already consigned the defeat to Colombia in the history books and is not much concerned with the scoreline.

"The natural tendency would be to say, OK, now it's only about the result [against Brazil]. But the reality is it is a friendly game. We are preparing for a tournament," Berhalter said. "We have to be brave and we have to continue with our plan. And, obviously, a lot of pressure from the outside after a 5-1 defeat at home but, again, it's about preparing this group for a Copa América."

Alex Hales let down 'myself, friends, family, team-mates'

Nottinghamshire batsman apologised to county team-mates after 21-day recreational drugs ban

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jul-2019Alex Hales has said he wants to put the “mistakes of the past” behind him, and issued an apology to his Nottinghamshire team-mates following his 21-day ban for recreational drug use.Hales was deselected from England’s World Cup squad as a result of the ban, with captain Eoin Morgan citing a “complete breakdown of trust” for his omission from the final 15-man squad. But speaking as part of Nottinghamshire’s video preview for their upcoming T20 campaign, Hales revealed that he had apologised to his county team-mates and admitted that he had let them down.”As soon as I walked back into the changing room, around the guys, I couldn’t have asked for more,” he said. “Everyone has been unbelievable. I just wanted to apologise to them, for everything that happened.”I got the point across that I had not just let myself down, I’d let down family, friends, team-mates – so I had to get that off my chest, I had to tell the guys how I was feeling.”I wanted to let them know I was 100 percent focused on the cricket now, [that] I wanted to move forward and put those mistakes of the past behind me.”Nottinghamshire have stuck by Hales publicly throughout the incident. After the news broke, the club issued a statement which said it was “in the best interests of all concerned for him to get back to playing cricket for Nottinghamshire as quickly as possible”, despite his actions falling “way short of the behaviours the club expects from any of its staff”.At the Caribbean Premier League draft in May, Hales twice declined to comment when asked about his deselection, and his only public comment had been via a statement from his management company which said that he was “devastated”.But Hales did admit he had his sights set on an England recall in time for the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2020, and has retained his central contract which runs until the end of the summer.”It’s how it has to be, to be honest,” he said. “I can’t change what’s happened – all I can affect is what’s going to happen. I’m just trying to look at it in as much of a positive way as I can, just have to crack on and try to make the most of hopefully a few more years in my career.”They [Notts] asked me if I was ready to play, and I just couldn’t wait to get back out there to be honest, that’s all I want to do, is play cricket.”Hales was picked for Nottinghamshire’s final group game and their semi-final defeat in the Royal London Cup, scoring 36 and 54, and will open the batting in their Vitality Blast campaign which starts next Thursday.Nottinghamshire’s progress in that competition – and they are favourites with the bookies to regain the crown they won in 2017 – will determine Hales’ participation in the CPL, where Barbados Tridents chose him with the first pick of the draft.Following that, he has expressed interest in playing in the Big Bash, and has a year to run on his contract with Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League, though will hope to be involved in some of England’s white-ball internationals this winter (3 ODIs and 3 T20Is in South Africa, and 5 T20Is in New Zealand).

Sullivan angry with Steidten as reporter names seven failed West Ham deals

Some interesting detail has surfaced on goings-on behind-the-scenes at West Ham, with manager David Moyes not the only one facing scrutiny.

Manager reports emerge as pressure piles on Moyes

The Hammers head coach was already under growing pressure before their 6-0 home defeat to Arsenal last weekend, but the historic loss has now put Moyes in a far more precarious position.

Moyes dealt contract worry as West Ham consider "perfect" trophy-laden boss

He’s won nine pieces of silverware.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 8, 2024

West Ham are yet to win a game in 2024, and with Moyes' contract expiring at the end of this season as things stand, it is believed that their turbulent recent form has put new deal talks on hold for the time being (Jason Burt).

Reports suggest that West Ham are exploring managerial alternatives to Moyes, in case the London Stadium hierarchy opt against extending the Scotsman's stay after what has been a memorable few years.

The east Londoners have qualified for Europe in all three of their last three full seasons under Moyes, and the 60-year-old also guided them to their first major trophy since the 1980s with an historic Conference League triumph in Prague.

However, their league form has also left a lot to be desired in parts, with West Ham narrowly avoiding a drop to The Championship last season amid some complaints over Moyes' dogged style of play.

“Let’s be fair, over the last three years it’s been the best time West Ham have ever had," said Moyes after West Ham's defeat to Arsenal.

Sixth and seventh in the league, semi-final of the Europa League, a final of a European cup competition and I still think this club has grown. Undoubtedly, we’ve had a terrible day today and I understand them [the fans] leaving but sometimes at football clubs you are going to have bad days. Today we had a bad day and I certainly won’t forget the good ones.

West Ham boss David Moyes.

“The disappointing thing for me is I don’t think since I’ve come back to the club … I don’t think my team has defended in that way. Ever. We were weak, we didn’t do our jobs well enough. We didn’t fight to contain it harder and make sure that we didn’t concede and we could have conceded other goals as well."

Moyes certainly wasn't helped by West Ham's lacklustre January transfer window, either, as the club failed to replace both Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals who departed West Ham in dramatic fashion on deadline day.

The Irons have been criticised for their failure to bring in a new forward, and according to journalist Graeme Bailey, co-chairman David Sullivan isn't exactly pleased with technical director Tim Steidten as a result.

Sullivan annoyed with Steidten after January failures at West Ham

Writing for HITC, Bailey claims Sullivan is growing "increasingly frustrated" with Steidten, as well as Moyes, with the German seeing more than "half a dozen deals" set up only to fall through.

Indeed, West Ham missed out on agreements for Ismaila Sarr, Stephen Bergwijn, Marcos Leonardo, Ibrahim Osman, Jota, Hugo Ekitike and Armando Broja, according to this report, which has apparently been down to ongoing issues between Moyes and Steidten.

Their only signing of the window came in the form of Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan, and he hasn't exactly got off to the best start.

Mbappe and Watt are not the kind of characters to back down from a challenge, and that occasionally means putting their body on the line. Mbappe did just that when taking a nasty blow to the face during France’s Euro 2024 opener against Austria.

The 25-year-old, who is linking up with Real Madrid this summer, was left with blood pouring out of his nose as he had to be replaced and will now need to be fitted with a protective mask before taking to the field again. Watt has been in that position himself, with his nose left seriously misshapen at times.

Mignon du Preez guides Loughborough Lightning up to third in KSL table

Jemima Rodrigues half-century in vain for Yorkshire Diamonds, who suffer four run-outs in making 129

ECB Reporters Network18-Aug-2019Loughborough Lightning completed a third win in four matches to move ahead of Surrey Stars into third place in the Kia Super League, winning a low-scoring contest by six wickets with five balls to spare. South African star Mignon du Preez produced the match-winning innings for the second game running, following her 70 not out against Stars last week with an unbeaten 38 here, striking four sixes.Indian teenager Jemimah Rodrigues top-scored with 58 for the Diamonds, but a total of 129 all out from their 20 overs proved too little in the end, even though their bowlers did their best by taking the contest into the final over, England seamer Beth Langston conceding only 17 from her four overs.Lightning took the upper hand early after Yorkshire had won the toss and opted to bat, the visitors losing both openers in the Powerplay overs in making 32. Lauren Winfield drove Jenny Gunn straight to Georgia Adams at mid-off before West Indies allrounder Hayley Matthews was rewarded for two tidy overs when Alyssa Healy hit out to deep midwicket, where Lucy Higham pouched a good catch after waiting for a towering shot to come down.Hollie Armitage, who had struggled against Matthews’ offbreaks in the Powerplay, fared no better against Kirstie Gordon, the left-arm spinner, whose sixth delivery bowled her, Diamonds reaching the halfway point at 55 for 3.Rodrigues and Alice Davidson-Richards steadied the ship, adding 35 in six overs, but a breakdown in communication cost the latter her wicket after Rodrigues set off for a quick single off Gordon, Sarah Glenn’s throw from short backward square running the non-striker out comfortably. The 18-year-old Rodrigues completed her half-century off 34 balls, having struck four boundaries, but lost another partner when Bess Heath miscued Bryce to mid-off before her fine innings ended when she found the hands of Matthews at deep midwicket. She fell during a chaotic last two overs of the Diamonds innings, which saw 14 runs added but five wickets lost, three of them run out. In the midst of that, Matthews bowled Langston to finish with 2 for 19, her economy bettered only by Gordon, who took 1 for 14 from her four overs. In reply, Lightning openers Matthews and Amy Jones picked up boundaries in five of the first six overs to be comfortably ahead of the game at 40 without loss, before Matthews missed one from legspinner Katie Levick that kept low.A tight three overs by the lively left-armer Katie George put the brake on a little. Nonetheless, Lightning looked well placed at 58 for 1 at the halfway point, although they stumbled in the 13th over as Chamari Atapattu was run out and Jones caught behind off consecutive balls from Langston, leaving two new batsmen at the crease with 56 still needed. The pressure was eased somewhat when George’s final over went for 14, including a six by du Preez over the longest boundary, leaving Lightning needing 34 off the final five overs, although du Preez had been given a let-off on 7 when George could not hold on to what would have been a good return catch.Du Preez struck her second maximum off New Zealand offspinner Leigh Kasparek and a third off Levick – either side of ex-Lightning left-arm spinner Linsey Smith dismissing her former captain, Georgia Elwiss – finishing the match by clouting Smith for her fourth six from the first ball of the final over.

Hopes were high for Bellingham after an outstanding season for Real Madrid and putting in a virtuoso goalscoring display in England's 1-0 win over Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener. However, the 20-year-old struggled in the subsequent match against Denmark and that continued versus Slovenia, too. Now, the former Borussia Dortmund man has admitted to being physically spent in that 0-0 draw on Tuesday.

He said on the Football Association’s show: “You definitely draw on them [the England fans] for energy towards the end of games. I felt like in the last game [against Slovenia], I was absolutely dead. But you hear them singing, hear them chanting and you can play at a level that's not our best, it's normal, it can happen. But I think the important thing is, when you're wearing this badge and you're representing those fans, is that you don't give up and I think they're a constant reminder of that.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bellingham proved to be one of the best players in the world in 2023-24 after scoring 23 goals, bagging 13 assists and leading Madrid to La Liga and Champions League glory. However, it is clear the ex-Birmingham City star is not having the impact he and many others would have hoped in recent games and after this admission, England boss Gareth Southgate may have a selection decision on his hands.

O’Neil benches Lemina in predicted Wolves lineup vs Sheff Utd

The job Gary O’Neil is doing at Wolverhampton Wanderers this season is nothing short of remarkable, especially after losing his two best midfielders last summer.

Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes both departed Molineux, yet O’Neil adapted and has managed to bring out the best of the players he has at his disposal.

The Old Gold have recorded a Premier League double over Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, while also defeating Manchester City during the early stages of the campaign, and their recent form has been solid.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

A home tie against Sheffield United awaits the Midlands side tomorrow afternoon and considering the Blades are propping up the rest of the league, it represents an ideal opportunity for O’Neil to claim another three points.

With that in mind, here's a look at the potential Wolves starting XI that will take to the Molineux pitch tomorrow…

1 GK – Jose Sa

There won't be a change to the goalkeeper as Sa will retain his place in the starting XI.

The Portuguese shot-stopper has missed only two league matches this season and was even named as the captain against Spurs in the 2-1 win last weekend.

Across his 23 matches thus far, however, Sa has kept just three clean sheets and if it were not for the wonderful form of their attacking options, the club may be in a slightly more precarious situation.

2 CB – Max Kilman

Max Kilman

The captain has played every minute of every league match so far this season and has been a rock at the back for the club.

The 26-year-old is contracted to the Old Gold until 2028, but if he continues this current rich vein of form, then he may just start attracting attention from potential suitors, that’s for sure.

3 CB – Craig Dawson

The veteran centre-back has played 23 of the 25 league ties Wolves have played this term and against Spurs, he was in fine form.

Not only did he make ten clearances and block three shots, but Dawson won seven of his nine contested duels during the victory and this display was key to Wolves securing all three points.

4 CB – Toti

Like Dawson, Toti was also extremely solid against Spurs last week. He made ten clearances, four interceptions, two tackles and was not dribbled past once, showcasing his physical strength in one-on-one battles.

Toti has already made more league appearances this season than he did during the whole of the 2022/23 campaign, and he is slowly emerging as a key member of O’Neil’s side.

5 RM – Nelson Semedo

The 30-year-old had spent the previous few months playing in an unfamiliar role on the right-hand side of the midfield due to O’Neil utilising either a 3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1 formation.

His attacking talents have not exactly been on show, however, as he has registered just one goal and one assist in all competitions.

6 CM – Joao Gomes

Joao Gomes

The Brazilian enjoyed one of his finest games for the club last week as he scored a brace which proved to be decisive in the victory over Spurs.

He also made six tackles and four clearances as his defensive abilities were also on show, and he will retain his place against the Blades tomorrow afternoon.

7 CM – Tommy Doyle

Tommy Doyle

Mario Lemina enjoyed a decent game last weekend, yet he may have to make way in order for Tommy Doyle to start against Sheffield United.

The on-loan Manchester City starlet was hailed as “exceptional” by talent scout Jacek Kulig back in 2021 as he discussed the wealth of talent that City possessed in their youth sides.

The youngster has started just five Premier League matches this season, yet when he has featured, the 22-year-old has showcased his talents.

He holds an 86% pass success rate, while winning 56% of his total duels and losing possession just 5.6 per game and a tie against the bottom side in the league could be an ideal opportunity for him to come into the starting XI.

8 LM – Rayan Ait-Nouri

Rayan Ait-Nouri up against West Ham's Jarrod Bowen.

The Algerian did not enjoy the best of games against Spurs last week. He won only three of his ten contested ground duels during the encounter, along with succeeding with just one dribble attempt and losing possession a staggering 17 times.

Due to a lack of options on the left side of the midfield, however, Ait-Nouri will retain his spot in the starting XI and O’Neil will be hoping a tie against the Blades will allow him to perform better.

9 AM – Pedro Neto

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

In front of the four-man midfield, O’Neil will deploy two attacking midfielders and one will be Neto, who has registered an impressive nine assists in the top flight already, despite playing only 16 games.

The 23-year-old grabbed an assist against Spurs and with the Blades’ defence conceding 65 goals in just 25 matches, he will certainly have his eye on scoring a goal or two tomorrow.

10 AM – Pablo Sarabia

Alongside Neto, Sarabia will be deployed, and the duo have the ability to cause plenty of chaos on Sunday afternoon.

The Spaniard has scored twice and chipped in with nine assists in all competitions, but he didn’t play in the reverse clash against the Blades back in November – although he must be unleashed tomorrow.

The 31-year-old made three key passes last week and missed a big chance, suggesting that with a bit better finishing, he may have added to his goal tally for the season.

Ashwin still the best spinner India have – Kumble

Former India coach says team can accommodate both Ashwin and Jadeja on overseas tours

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Sep-2019One of the debates during India’s tour of the West Indies centred on R Ashwin’s place in the side in overseas Tests, after the offspinner missed out on the starting XI in both the Antigua and Jamaica Tests. In both matches, India went with Ravindra Jadeja as the lone spinner, with coach Ravi Shastri explaining that the preference for Jadeja was based on his improved batting and sharp fielding skills.Former India captain and coach Anil Kumble, however, has backed Ashwin, insisting that he remains the No. 1 spinner in the side and India have to find a way to get him in. Ashwin has not played a Test for India since the first match the tour of Australia last year in Adelaide, where he suffered an abdomen injury that eventually ruled him out for the rest of the tour. Earlier that year, he had failed to finish the England series, after aggravating a hip injury. Despite the injuries, Ashwin’s figures in seven overseas Tests in 2018 were 24 wickets at 30.16.”He is still the best spinner that you have,” Kumble said in an interview with . “Yes, there have been a few incidents where he has had injuries and not performed to his potential, but Ashwin is your No. 1 spinner in the team. He should be a part of the squad, he should be in the playing XI, you have to make a way of getting him in.”Citing Ashwin’s batting credentials – the offspinner averages nearly 30 in Tests and has four centuries and 11 fifties – Kumble believed the team could accommodate both Ashwin and Jadeja, adding heft to their lower-order batting too.”I strongly believe that the team certainly can have two spinners in the squad, because both Ashwin and Jadeja are wonderful batsmen,” he said. “Ashwin has had four Test hundreds, Jadeja has been really consistent with the bat. He did that again in the West Indies, he’s a wonderful bowler too and both of them in tandem can certainly be handful for the opposition. So yes, when India travel outside, it’s not always that you get four bowlers to pick up 20 wickets.”Ideally, if you have a combination of three fast bowlers and two spinners, wherein your two spinners can also contribute with the bat, that’s the perfect scenario. And you have two front-line spinners who are equally good as batsmen, so I think it’s just a matter of time, I strongly believe that Ashwin will certainly make it into the playing XI. So, the management needs to look at that and I am a bit surprised that someone with the ability and quality of Ashwin is sitting out in a Test match.”Kumble also urged the selectors to have discussions about an exit plan for MS Dhoni, for the sake of clarity within the team and to ensure Dhoni got a proper send-off. There has been considerable speculation around Dhoni’s future following India’s semi-final exit from the World Cup. After the World Cup, Dhoni spent two weeks with the Parachute Regiment of the Indian Army, where he has the rank of honorary Lieutenant Colonel, and had opted out of the West Indies tour. Rishabh Pant handled wicketkeeping duties for all formats on the tour.Getty ImagesWhile announcing the team for the Caribbean tour, MSK Prasad, India’s chairman of selectors, had stated that a cricketer like Dhoni “knows when to retire”, and went on to add that they had already started grooming youngsters. Kumble said that with the T20 World Cup a year away, roles and responsibilities, including back-ups need to be fixed, and if Dhoni is a part of plans for the T20 World Cup, he needed to be playing all games.”I think the selectors will have a take a call as to which is the likely team that you’d want in the World Cup because the World Cup is just a year away,” Kumble said. “You’d want a consistent team to be playing right throughout and that’s exactly what didn’t happen in the 50-over [World Cup] competition.”So, yes, there will be some discussions about an exit plan. But having said that, MS Dhoni certainly deserves a proper send-off, whenever he decides to move on from the sport. But for the team’s sake, the selectors need to sit down and have a discussion around what the plans are because it’s important that things be communicated.”If the selectors believe that Dhoni is in the scheme of things for the T20 World Cup then I think he should be playing every game. If he’s not, then it’s important that they have a discussion around how they need to make this happen. I think they need to do that in the next couple of months.”Pant has also shown some inconsistency. So, that’s a call the selectors need to make. Today, in spite of all of that, are you going to back him or someone else, or would you look back? I wouldn’t but I think it’s important that the selectors take a call on that.”
