Shearer welcomes Rooney to 200 club in Premier League

Wayne Rooney has had his critics in recent years, but there is no denying the striker’s achievements.Dwindling out of contention at Manchester United last season caused many to suggest that Rooney no longer had it in him to affect a game at the top level. However, the 31-year-old has made the doubters think again after making an instant impact back at his boyhood club Everton. The striker returned to Goodison Park earlier this summer, 13 years after leaving the Merseyside outfit for United, where he had a glittering spell, winning 12 trophies, including five Premier League titles and the Champions League.Since returning to Everton, Rooney has scored in both league fixtures of the season, and his strike against Manchester City on Monday night was particularly special. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but the England captain got on the scoresheet first to nab his 200th Premier League goal.Only Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has reached that feat in England’s top flight, and the now-BBC pundit had some kind words for Rooney on Twitter.

Alexander-Arnold display vs Hoffenheim much more than just a superb free kick

Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Hoffenheim in last night’s Champions League qualifier had youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold at its beating heart.

In the absence of the injured Nathaniel Clyne, the youngster has stepped into the starting XI for the beginning of 2017/18 and although he didn’t exactly cover himself in glory during a 3-3 draw with Watford on Saturday, last night’s display hinted he could soon be taking the No.2 role permanently at Anfield.

The most notable aspect of the 18-year-old’s performance was the new weapon in his armoury; a delicious free-kick in which he wrapped the ball around the wall and delicately into the bottom corner of the net, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead.

But the right-back’s contributions didn’t stop there; he also weighed in with the most interceptions of any Liverpool player, an impressive five, whipped in five crosses and twice beat his man when charging down the flank.

Perhaps most tellingly of Alexander-Arnold’s influence on the 2-1 win, he had the most touches of the ball of any Reds player. But was he Liverpool’s Man of the Match last night? Let us know by voting below…

Revealed: 68% of Man City fans want Walker to start vs Liverpool

Forking out lavish sums on full-backs was one of the recurring themes of Manchester City’s transfer window. Not only did they set a new record fee for a full-back by bringing in Tottenham’s Kyle Walker, but they also spent a similar sum on Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy, whilst acquiring Real Madrid’s Danilo somewhere in between.

The 29-cap England international started the season as Pep Guardiola’s first choice on the right-hand side, but a controversial sending off against Everton for a challenge on Dominic Calvert-Lewin saw the Brazilian, who Transfermarkt value at £16.2million, take his place against Bournemouth prior to the international break and grab an assist in the dramatic 2-1 win.

With that in mind, we asked Manchester City fans earlier this week who should start on the right of defence, whether as a wing-back or full-back, for the Premier League clash with Liverpool on Saturday.

And while 32% believe Danilo deserves to keep his place, it was Walker who surged ahead in our poll with a whopping 68% of the vote. But does the 27-year-old have what it takes to nullify Sadio Mane’s huge threat on the counter-attack? Let us know by commenting below…

Tottenham Hotspur fans delighted by Ben Davies return

Ben Davies has seemingly grown a fanbase among Tottenham Hotspur’s following since becoming a regular feature in Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

The Wales international assumed the left-back role when Danny Rose suffered a knee injury in January, and he has since made it his own following a rocky start.

The North London outfit were without Davies for the visit of Swansea City at Wembley last weekend due to a knock that he picked up against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Despite creating a handful of chances, Spurs were unable to break the deadlock and had to settle for a goalless draw with the Swans.

On Saturday, Pochettino’s men will face rivals West Ham United at the London Stadium, and Davies is expected to return.

According to football.london, the Argentine told reporters in his pre-match press conference that the Welshman has recovered from a minor ankle injury.

“He struggled last week with his ankle. I told you about the knock against Dortmund, but I think now he is ready.”

After hearing the news, fans were delighted to welcome Davies back into the squad.

Leeds fans react as Liam Cooper apologises for Cardiff dismissal

Leeds United captain Liam Cooper took to his official Twitter account to apologise after he was sent off in the first half of his side’s 3-1 defeat to Cardiff City in the Championship on Tuesday night, but Whites fans were quick to back the defender.

Already trailing 2-0 thank to goals from Kenneth Zohore and Junior Hoilett in the top-of-the-table clash at the Cardiff City Stadium, Cooper picked up two yellow cards in six minutes to see red before the interval and give his teammates an even more difficult task to get back into the game.

The 26-year-old has been one of the Yorkshire outfit’s most impressive performers this term though, and he will hope to bounce back once he has served his one-match ban in the derby against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Sunday.

Leeds supporters were quick to react to Cooper’s apology via social media, and while some told him to “forget” about it, others pointed out that he ‘wasn’t the only one at fault’.

Football fans criticise ‘overrated’ Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli

It is fair to say that Dele Alli has not yet found his best form this season.

The Tottenham Hotspur star has had a meteoric rise over the past few years – going from League One to challenging for the Premier League title.

Alli has established himself as a regular starter in Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but the midfielder is just 21 years of age.

Questions have been raised over the player’s temperament and discipline after he was handed a one-match international ban for making an offensive middle-finger gesture while playing for England last month.

Alli has made eight appearances in all competitions for Spurs this season, scoring three goals and creating one assist.

The young player has not been as influential during matches as he has been in the past, and The Telegraph journalist Matt Law recently suggested that Alli has not looked entirely happy on the field.

The reporter made the observation during England’s 1-0 win over Lithuania – their final World Cup qualifier.

Many football fans reacted to this tweet by criticising the Tottenham star.

Man United fans backing Rashford to start over Martial against Liverpool

Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford is in fine form heading into the huge Premier League clash against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday, and Red Devils fans are backing him to once again start over Anthony Martial and do the business on the pitch.

The 19-year-old has started all but one of United’s seven top flight fixtures this season – often meaning Martial has entered the action from the substitutes’ bench – and he has scored five goals and provided a further four assists in 11 appearances in all competitions.

While his French teammate is also in good form and didn’t feature for his country during the international break like Rashford did for England, the Old Trafford faithful believe the teenager will make an impact against Jurgen Klopp’s men on Saturday like he has against Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea in the past.

Man United supporters were quick to have their say on Rashford via social media, and while some said “it’s his time to do it against the Scousers”, others believe he “works far harder without the ball” than Martial and therefore must start.

Everton fans change their tune as Koeman tweets statement

For weeks, a large number of Everton fans expressed their fury at Ronald Koeman, urging the club to sack the manager following a string of disappointing results.

They managed to get their wish on Monday afternoon when the Toffees announced the departure of the Dutchman, who was in charge of the club for 16 months.

The ambition shown in the transfer market – the club spent more than £100m – did not translate onto the pitch as the team have won just two of their nine Premier League fixtures.

The Merseyside outfit are also on the brink of dropping out of the Europa League at the group stage as they have recorded one draw and two defeats so far.

Koeman broke his silence on Tuesday by taking to Twitter with a statement, thanking chairman Bill Kenwright and majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri, as well as the fans.

The former Southampton boss admitted that he was disappointed to have lost his job but sent well-wishes to the team.

In response, rather than berate Koeman, the fans went for a different approach.

Unsworth emerges as bookies’ favourite for Everton job

David Unsworth has leapfrogged Sam Allardyce to become the bookmakers’ favourite for the permanent Everton job.

The 44-year-old, who has worked as the Toffees’ Under-23s coach since 2014, is currently in temporary charge of the first team.

The club’s board turned to Unsworth following the dismissal of Ronald Koeman, who was sent packing after overseeing just two wins in nine Premier League games.

It was a difficult start for the interim coach as the Toffees suffered exits from the Carabao Cup and Europa League.

The team were also beaten by Leicester City in the Premier League, but there was some good news last weekend when the team came from behind to earn a 3-2 victory over Watford at Goodison Park.

It was initially widely speculated that Unsworth would be replaced by a more experienced coach, but there has been since been a shift in the betting markets.

SkyBet is offering odds of 1/2 on the former Everton defender being handed the job on a full-time basis.

Former Crystal Palace boss Sam Allardyce was thought to be a front-runner for the position, but the 63-year-old has told talkSPORT that he has no held talks with the Merseyside outfit.

As it stands, the ex-England manager, who lasted just 67 days in the job, is the second-favourite to be appointed at Goodison Park, with odds of 5/2.

Stats show that Danny Rose could be crucial to Spurs for the rest of the season

After two negative results against sides who have struggled so far this season, it’s probably fair to say that Tottenham Hotspur can start to think about cup competitions as their best chance of success this season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side could drop 16 points behind Manchester City tonight if the league leaders beat Southampton, but more importantly, they could drop as low as seventh, four points adrift of fourth place.

There probably aren’t too many positives to take from a night when things fell apart early for Spurs, though two misses from close range – one from Christian Eriksen and one from Fernando Llorente – should have allowed Pochettino’s side to level things, and they were denied a penalty late on which could well have rescued a point.

That incident seemed to sum up a night when nothing went right for Spurs, but it occurred when Danny Rose wandered into the box in the dying minutes.

The stats show that Rose, just back from injury, was one of the stand-out performers. There are mixed messages from Tottenham, Rose and Pochettino about the left-back’s future, but he could well have an important role to play in his side’s ability to finally win a trophy this season.

Playing at wing-back, his job is to be an all-rounder, which he managed to do, winning all of his tackles, making two key passes, and keeping an 82% pass accuracy rate, which isn’t too bad when your job is to make things happen on the wing. Indeed, his accuracy is just one percentage point lower than his team’s average.

The rest of this season won’t be easy for Spurs. They are out of the title race and will have to prioritise other areas if they’re to have a successful season as well as making sure they finish in the top four. That means they still have to fight on many fronts. But with Danny Rose – valued at £25.2m by transfermarkt.com – coming back to fitness and hitting form, Tottenham once again have four full-backs – two on either side – that they can call upon for the rest of the campaign.

And even if this is to be the England left-back’s final season at the club, they’ll need to make the most of having him around.
