Crystal Palace: Fans react to clip of Andros Townsend goal

Crystal Palace have frustrated some fans on their official Twitter channel after posting a clip of Andros Townsend’s thunderbolt in their 2-0 win vs Burnley in 2018 as their Goal of the Day.

Still without a manager after the departure of Roy Hodgson last month [Independent], the south Londoners face a worrying situation following their decision to release 22 players upon the expiration of their contracts earlier in June [The Sun].

Lucien Favre is currently believed to be the front-runner for the position as they look to replace these individuals, while Nuno Espirito Santo, Frank Lampard, Steve Cooper, Valerian Ismael and Patrick Vieira have all previously been evaluated for the role [Sky Sports].

Directionless heading into 2021/22 pre-season, no wonder many Crystal Palace fans took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the decision to post the goal as the club hangs in limbo over a manager and the playing squad:

Should Everton sign Yves Bissouma?

Everton’s transfer plans this summer will revolve around strengthening their options in attack, but they also appear to be in the market for a new midfielder.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have already been linked with the likes of Sander Berge and Ainsley Maitland-Niles but one target stands tall above the other options.

That happens to be Yves Bissouma, a man who has caught the attention of plenty in the Premier League this season.

The Daily Express claimed that Everton are in the race to sign the dominant midfielder this summer, with a £40m fee being touted, but they will face competition from Arsenal and Liverpool, both of whom Fabrizio Romano suggested were keen this week.

Bissouma has been a combative force for the Seagulls over the last two years and is one of the strongest tacklers in the Premier League.

With that in mind, Everton could finally replace the effervescent Idrissa Gueye.

The Senegal powerhouse drew comparisons to N’Golo Kante during his time in the Premier League and, as a result of his performances, he earned a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Throughout the course of his career, Gueye has won 3.2 tackles per match, but he actually usurped that tally during his time at Goodison Park. During his first season with the Merseyside outfit, the midfielder won 4.1 tackles per match, a figure which increased to 4.3 by the time of his final year at the Toffees.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-transfer-news-lukaku-leao-bissouma-berge-antony” title=”Read the latest Everton transfer news!”]

No Everton player has come close to that tally this season, with Allan managing 3.3 successful challenges per game. This is precisely why Bissouma would be such a valuable addition.

Described as “exceptional” by Gary Lineker, the 24-year-old won 2.9 tackles per match in 2020/21.That falls below Allan and Gueye, but it’s his reading of the play that also stands up in comparison with the former Toffees midfielder.

In terms of interceptions, he has made 2.2 interceptions per game during his senior career – a number Bissouma comes close to replicating with 1.8 this term.

A proven Premier League talent, he would be a marvellous capture for the Toffees this summer, and one which could propel them to a place in Europe.

Tottenham want Leonardo Bonucci

According to a report by TUTTOmercatoWEB, Tottenham Hotspur now want Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci and that interest can become ‘something more’ in the next few weeks.

The Lowdown: Spurs on the defensive chase…

The centre-back position has been touted as a main area for improvement this summer, with targets already being identified by Tottenham.

Indeed, as per Alasdair Gold, Nikola Milenkovic and Joachim Andersen are on the list, and there is also a belief that Merih Demiral is being eyed by Spurs.

Regardless of who they want to bring in, Tottenham will need to adopt a sell-to-buy policy this summer before any signings are made amid financial constraints.

The Latest: Spurs now want Bonucci…

As per TUTTOmercatoWEB, another defender has now entered the radar of Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Italian colossus Bonucci, who has been playing at the highest level for over a decade now, is still a regular for Juventus despite being 34 years old. Indeed he started 24 Serie A matches for the Old Lady last season and has now been called up to Italy’s 26-man Euro 2020 squad by Roberto Mancini.

As a result, Tottenham are now interested in Bonucci, and that could transform into ‘something more’ over these next few weeks.

The Verdict: Quick fix…

While Bonucci is a proven defender and could do wonders as part of a Tottenham backline, Levy and co should arguably be looking for a more long-term solution.

The £180,000-per-week powerhouse, standing at a lofty 1.9m (6 foot 3), has the physicality to impress in England, but the longevity is another matter entirely. At 34, Spurs could maybe hope for one or two more elite seasons from the defender before he inevitably declines.

The Lilywhites may have missed the boat for Bonucci but there is no doubt he would have been a sensational signing a few years ago. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, a known admirer of the 102-cap Italy legend, previously dubbed him an ‘exceptional player’ when speaking to the English press (Manchester Evening News).

Despite Bonucci’s vast experience and top-level success (nine Serie A titles), we believe Spurs should be looking elsewhere for defensive reinforcements this summer.

West Ham must avoid Mitrovic swoop

A surprise name has emerged in West Ham’s hunt for a new forward this summer…

What’s the word?

According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, the Irons are keeping tabs on Aleksandar Mitrovic’s situation at Fulham, who were relegated back to the Championship earlier this week.

It’s claimed that David Moyes is a big fan of the Serbian powerhouse and believes he “can succeed” at the London Stadium under his stewardship.

Konur also suggests that “formal contacts” are expected to be made between the two clubs at the end of the season.

It remains to be seen how much the 26-year-old would cost the Hammers, though CIES Football Observatory currently value him at €20m (£18m), whilst he’s also earning reported wages of £60k-per-week at Craven Cottage.

Worst since Haller?

David Gold, David Sullivan and Karen Brady must reject Moyes’ desire to land Mitrovic at all costs as they will be making their worst mistake since splashing the cash on Sebastian Haller.

The Ivory Coast striker cost the East London outfit a club-record £45m but was sold after 18 months, having only found the net 14 times, and they made a net loss of around £20m on him – a disastrous turn of events.

It’s no secret that Moyes desperately needs an alternative option to the injury-prone Michail Antonio, if not a perfect foil to partner him but he’s barking up the wrong tree by targeting the Fulham flop.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-latest-west-ham-transfer-rumours-gossip-team-injury-news-gsb-update” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

Mitrovic has never delivered in the Premier League consistently and that has to be a major cause of concern.

In 104 top-flight appearances across spells with the Cottagers and Newcastle United, the 6 foot 2 attacker has only scored 24 goals, which is actually a far worse games-per-goal ratio (4.3) than Haller (3.7).

Whilst Mitrovic has also always carried an element of controversy wherever he’s been.

During a win over Huddersfield Town in the Championship in August 2019, fans lambasted him as “embarrassing” and “shameless” for feigning an injury whilst more recently, Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe slammed him for an elbow on Ben White, calling it “really naughty.”

His former boss at the Magpies, Steve McClaren, added his thoughts soon after, and claimed (via Leeds Live): “That’s how he is, that’s what he was like as a kid when we signed him for Newcastle. He’s so aggressive, he bullies you. That’s what he did. The first five games he played, I think he got sent off twice for us. He has to calm down, he has to control his emotions and play the game.”

That should be enough to put any manager off, let alone his three league goals this campaign.

GSB must absolutely steer clear of Mitrovic this summer, no matter how badly Moyes wants him at the club.

AND in other news, Sullivan could land West Ham “another Antonio” with bargain swoop for 16-goal finisher…

Norwich interested in Adarabioyo

Norwich City are interested in a deal to bring Tosin Adarabioyo to Carrow Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Sky Sports, who claim that the Canaries are prioritising the signing of a centre-back in the upcoming transfer window, with Stuart Webber thought to be keeping a close eye on the situation of the 23-year-old Fulham defender.

The report goes on to state that Norwich scouts have been mapping the progress of the centre-back over the course of the Cottagers’ Premier League campaign ahead of a potential move this summer.

Farke would love him

Having joined Fulham from Manchester City in what was a £1.49m last October, Adarabioyo impressed in his debut season at Craven Cottage, despite the west London side ultimately suffering relegation to the Championship.

Over his 33 Premier League appearances, the £27k-per-week defender helped his side to keep nine clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 1.1 tackles and 5.8 clearances per game.

The former Manchester City man also impressed with his range of passing, successfully completing an average of 49.8 passes per match, with a success rate of 86%, in addition to completing an average of 3.6 long balls and 2.3 chipped passes per appearance.

These metrics saw Adarabioyo earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as Scott Parker’s ninth-best performer in the top flight.

As such, the addition of the £9m-rated defender to the Norwich City backline would appear to considerably boost the chances of the Canaries improving upon the whopping 75 goals they conceded in their 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

So, it would seem highly advisable for Webber to follow up on his interest with a bid for the player Tony Mowbray dubbed “immense” this summer, as Adarabioyo would not only bring Premier League experience to the City backline, but he would also appear to be the type of defender the German manager would love.

Campbell claims Everton will pursue Leao

Kevin Campbell has claimed that Everton will pursue a deal for Rafael Leao in the summer transfer window.

Speaking to Goodison News, the former Toffees striker claimed that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if the club were to try and sign the AC Milan ace given that Moise Kean could be sold and Ellis Simms is still inexperienced at senior level.

Everton should sign Leao

The Toffees should seriously consider trying to sign Leao in the summer if Milan make him available fpr sale.

The 21-year-old is certainly a rising talent and has previously been compared to both Brazilian legend Ronaldo and Paris Saint Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe.

To merely be named in the same breath as these two is very high praise, and if he turns out nearly as good as either of them, Carlo Ancelotti’s team must snap him up first before any other clubs move in for the kill.

Leao has scored seven goals and supplied a further five assists in 34 games across all competitions so far in 2020/21 (attacking resources.

Nonetheless, the Portuguese youngster is certainly a player who Everton should strongly consider signing.

Alasdair Gold shares update in Spurs manager hunt

According to a report by reliable Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold, the club have set a timeframe for appointing a new manager with chairman Daniel Levy aiming to make an announcement before the end of this season.

In a major update, Gold has shared potentially when Tottenham could be making the big decision of who to hire after sacking previous boss Jose Mourinho.

Gold drops major managerial update

There have been plenty of names thrown into the mix even after blows in regards to chasing Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers, with the former announced as Bayern Munich’s new manager and the latter likely to stay put at Leicester (Sky Sports).

Gold, dropping an encouraging update, believes the aim is to appoint a brand new boss before the end of this season to avoid a long, drawn out process heading into the summer.

“Understand Spurs are aiming to announce their next manager before the end of this season,” explained the journalist on Twitter.

“So just over three weeks to get that done and dusted.”

Transfer Tavern take

While they haven’t given themselves much time, Tottenham could still be considered a big job by many coaches and there are no shortage of possible candidates.

Indeed, Erik Ten Hag appears to stand out among the plethora of names given his profile suits that of a manager Levy wants to hire.

It is said that Spurs are chasing an attack-minded coach and the Dutchman’s Cruyff-esque philosophy certainly suits fits that mould (AS).

The leap from Eredivisie football to the Premier League could be a big one, but there is little doubt Ten Hag displays plenty of promise.

Umar Sadiq has proven himself after Rangers

Umar Sadiq endured a difficult loan spell at Rangers in 2018 but is now reportedly wanted by Bayern Munich, which suggests that Steven Gerrard failed to get the best out of him during his time at Ibrox.

Sadiq joined the Gers on loan from Roma in the summer of 2018 but was promptly sent back to the Serie A side in December after failing to impress Gerrard with his performances.

During his time at Ibrox, the Nigerian forward made just four senior appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues, failing to contribute a single goal or assist in that time.

He subsequently joined Partizan Belgrade on a permanent deal after an initial loan spell, before moving to La Liga 2 side Almeria in last summer’s transfer window.

His performances with the Spanish club this season have been hugely impressive, with 17 goals and five assists to his name in just 32 appearances, which has led to Champions League holders Bayern Munich being linked with him in recent weeks.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/rangers-news-ibrox-steven-gerrard-ross-wilson-gers-rfc” title=”Latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more!”]

However, if they want to sign him this summer, it seems as if they may have to pay his reported €60m (£52m) release clause, which could rise to €80m (£69m) if Almeria earn promotion to the top-flight this season.

It seems remarkable that the Bundesliga champions would be keen on someone who failed to get into Gerrard’s side at Rangers just three years ago, but his performances since leaving Ibrox have been excellent, which makes you question why he wasn’t given more of a chance in the 2018/19 season.

The Nigerian international played a full 90 minutes just once for the Gers, in a 1-0 defeat against Aberdeen in the League Cup, whilst his other three appearances came from the bench, totalling just 26 minutes.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

He was never really given the chance to impress in Gerrard’s side, who arguably failed to properly unleash his obvious potential during his time in Scotland, and it now seems as if the striker is destined for a move to an elite club in the near future.

In other news… Gerrard should unleash 20 y/o gem next season, he’s a “manager’s dream”

Pundit claims Mourinho has lost his drive

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Bull, who is a Wolves Hall of Famer, believes that Jose Mourinho is not the same type of manager as he was at Chelsea, labelling him the “sheepish one”.

Mourinho has experienced mixed fortunes since succeeding Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs, but he does have a Carabao Cup final later this month which could be Tottenham’s first piece of silverware since 2008.

When he arrived at Chelsea for the first time, Mourinho labelled himself as ‘the special one’ which he backed up by winning back-to-back Premier League titles as well as an FA Cup and League Cup.

Speaking on how Mourinho comes across now and what has changed from the point of view of an outsider looking in, Bull told FFC:

“He came over here as the special one and made players want to play for him, but he’s not showing any glimpses of what he had at Chelsea.

“When he was at Chelsea he had that hunger, but he’s come back as the sheepish one at Tottenham without saying a word, not stand from his box and the players haven’t delivered for him.”

Spurs find themselves five points off the top four after draws with Newcastle United and Everton were sandwiched by a home reverse against Manchester United.

Mourinho has struggled to keep everyone on his side after falling out with both Dele Alli and Gareth Bale publicly known, and now players like Matt Doherty and Toby Alderweireld are being left out of the team and/or the squad.

Villa have perfect chance to sign Celtic’s Edouard

Aston Villa must seize their perfect chance to sign Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent months have linked Dean Smith’s side with a move for the Frenchman, and now there has been a major update on his long-term future at Celtic Park.

Eurosport claim that “Edouard is being touted to clubs across England ahead of a potential summer transfer but there seems to be little concrete interest.”

It’s added that a deal to land the striker would be around the £20m mark, and while “it had been expected that there would be a tussle to sign him…at this stage that does not seem to be the case”.

Dean Smith will be buzzing

In Edouard, Villa would land themselves someone who’s been incredibly prolific in his fledgeling career. As well as bagging 20 goals in just 34 games this season – and that too for a Celtic side in turmoil and way off the pace behind Rangers – he’s scored 82 goals in 179 senior games in total.

His former boss at Celtic, Neil Lennon, has raved about the kind of importance he holds at Celtic Park, showering him with praise after one real stand-out display against Ross County.

He said: “He’s hugely important (to us), he’s an outstanding footballer, talismanic almost, he’s so talented, so cool and he had two great finishes. He’s up there with some of the best we’ve had over the last 20 odd years.”

Given Villa have been so heavily reliant on Ollie Watkins up top – he’s played in every single Premier League game thus far this season – bringing in Edouard would lift a massive burden off the striker’s shoulders.

With the suggestion that teams aren’t falling over themselves just yet to sign Edouard, it’s all perfectly set up for Villa to have a clear run at the Frenchman and get a deal done.

And landing him this summer would surely have Smith buzzing at having another top-quality striker in his ranks.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa played a blinder in signing this star…
