Blackburn fans celebrate Mowbray’s tenure

[ad_pod ]

Blackburn Rovers recently announced that manager Tony Mowbray has reached the two-year mark in his tenure at Ewood Park.

Mowbray took charge of Rovers in February 2017, at which point the club were struggling in the Championship. The 55-year-old manager was not able to keep them in the second tier, but he had instigated an improvement in form and retained his position into the new League One season.

Venky’s Ltd, the owners of Blackburn Rovers, retained faith in Mowbray and were repaid when he brought the club back into the Championship at the first time of asking.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

Now, Rovers are undergoing a period of poor form, having lost their last four league outings, but they look to be safe from any relegation fears this time around. Considering the state of the club when Mowbray came in, the coach must be commended for the work he has done in steadying the ship and restoring the side as an aspirational one, rather than a fearful, failing one.

Following the club’s two-year announcement, plenty of Rovers fans took to Twitter to applaud the work Mowbray has done so far…

Dane Murray could be Celtic’s next star

Celtic currently have a significant number of players in their senior squad that have come through the club’s youth academy and play for the first team such as James Forrest and Callum McGregor, who have made a combined total of 42 appearances between them across all competitions this season.

Looking ahead to who could be the next regular figure for Celtic to come through the club’s academy, one potential candidate that could be set for a big future at the Parkhead club is 18-year-old Dane Murray, who has been touted to have a “bright future” ahead of him by Stephen Welsh.

As a product of Celtic’s youth system, Murray is predominantly a midfield player but has been deployed as a centre-back by Ange Postecoglou, which gives a clue as to what the Celtic manager sees in the teenager in terms of his skills and qualities on the pitch.

In Celtic’s 2-1 defeat against FC Midtjylland in the Champions League qualifying second-leg clash back in July, Murray played at the back for the full 120 minutes and managed to show everyone just what he’s capable of from a defensive point of view.

Murray managed to make six clearances, seven interceptions and three tackles as well as winning 11 duels and not getting dribbled past even once.

This display earned the youngster an impressive overall match rating of 7.3/10 according to SofaScore, making him Celtic’s joint-second highest rated player on the day, proving that he definitely has what it takes to play at a high level alongside the rest of Celtic’s more senior players.

In the first leg against Midtjylland, Murray played 45 minutes of action after Nir Bitton got sent off, after which fellow Hoops defender Welsh described the youngster’s performance as “fantastic,” which could be why Postecoglou selected him to start the second leg.

Looking ahead to the future, even though Murray hasn’t been involved in a matchday squad for Celtic in the league this season, he definitely has what it takes to break into Postecoglou’s side at some point in the future.

Consider the talent he’s shown so far and the fact that he has time on his side with his young age and he could save the club millions in potential future transfer fees.

Rangers fans slam Arfield v Dundee United

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left slamming the display of Scott Arfield in their 1-0 victory at home to Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership.

The central midfield player certainly did not have the best game by his standards, as he was hauled off for Giovanni van Bronckhorst midway through the second half for Joe Aribo.

He was largely anonymous in truth, recording fewer touches than his own goalkeeper Allan McGregor, and when he did have the ball, he struggled to make any sort of real impact.

Arfield did not have any shots on goal, and failed to make a single dribble, cross or long ball in the game, while he also lost out on five of his duels and gave the ball away twice (SofaScore).

Nonetheless, he will be hoping to put in a better performance in their next fixture.

MUFC must swoop for Milinkovic-Savic

Manchester United have not made any signings as of yet in the January transfer window, but there has been plenty of speculation with a number of players linked with a move to the club this month, and one of those touted to arrive could be the perfect replacement for Paul Pogba if he does not commit to a future at Old Trafford this summer.

What’s the word?

Journalist, Conor Clancy, has given his perspective on Sergej Milinković-Savić being linked to Manchester United, and the effect he could have on the side, hailing the Lazio midfielder “another Paul Pogba”.

Clancy told GIVEMESPORT:

“I think Milinkovic-Savic is just another Paul Pogba in that they’ve got the same skill set. They’re physically quite similar. When they’ve got the ball at their feet, they’re capable of doing similar things.”

Milinkovic-Savic has been linked this month with a move to Man United, as Rangnick comes under pressure to improve the side, but no official bid has been made for the player as of yet.

Ralf must seal the signing

The £63m-rated beast could surely cure the Pogba headache Manchester United are facing with his contract ending in the summer of this year, and fans would welcome the signing of the midfielder, with one Red Devils fan tweeting;

“@ManUtd why are we not targeting Milinkovic-Savic this window. He looks like the perfect match to a rather subdued midfield.”

The Lazio midfielder is enjoying an impressive campaign so far in his 21 games, scoring seven goals, registering eight assists from a whopping total of 31 key passes and an 82.5% pass success. As a consequence of that, the 26-year-old has claimed the most assists in the Serie A this season.

According to Squawka, when you compare the Serbian to Pogba in their last full season for their respective clubs, the 2020/21 campaign, Milinkovic-Savic scored five more goals, converted more of his chances, bagged six more assists, created a higher degree of chances and completed more passes than the 28-year-old United midfielder.

It’s fair to say that he would not only be a good replacement but could potentially be an upgrade at Old Trafford, and Rangnick should not ignore how well the Lazio midfielder is playing right now, and how his influence could inject a fresh perspective into his currently underwhelming side.

Leeds: Edmondson could leave permanently

Leeds United striker Ryan Edmondson could leave on a permanent basis over the summer, according to Leeds Live’s Ed Mackey.

The Lowdown: Edmondson’s Leeds career

Now 20, he joined Leeds back in 2017 from York City and has made two senior appearances for the Whites.

He has spent time out on loan with Aberdeen and Northampton Town in recent years and began the current campaign with Fleetwood Town.

Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott praised the centre forward on social media after he scored and provided an assist against Barrow back in October, with Edmondson now on loan at Port Vale.

The Latest: Mackey’s claim

Mackey shared a story on Leeds Live on Thursday, just days after the striker scored his first Port Vale goal in a 1-1 draw with Forest Green.

The journalist said that it is likely a loan move or even a permanent exit could be on the cards in the summer, when Edmondson will enter the final 12 months of his Elland Road contract.

The Verdict: Permanent exit?

Edmondson admitted that he was ‘loving’ life with Port Vale, and if he continues to impress with the League Two side, perhaps a permanent move there could be on the cards.

It seems clear that Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t view the 20-year-old as a future first-team player following a number of loan spells away from the club. Also, the Argentine has kept the likes of Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood close at Thorp Arch, with the two young forwards making their Premier League debuts this season.

Therefore, a permanent exit could be the right call for all parties at the end of the season, with Edmondson now having the chance to catch the eye of future suitors by impressing at Vale Park.

Aston Villa fans react to Danny Ings update

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have been reacting on Twitter to an update involving Danny Ings.

The striker was brought to the club from Southampton over the summer in a deal worth £25m. Since then, the 29-year-old has struggled to find the net as frequently as he did with the Saints, scoring just three times in 13 Premier League appearances.

He has started just twice under Steven Gerrard, most recently against Chelsea alongside Ollie Watkins in a 4-3-1-2 system.

The Athletic’s Gregg Evans shared a transfer mailbag last week, with one fan wanting to know more on Ings, Leon Bailey and Emiliano Buendia. The journalist revealed that the former will play more alongside Watkins as the season goes on.

Villa fans react

Total Villa shared Evans’ claim regarding Ings on Twitter, less than 24 hours before the trip to Brentford this afternoon. Here is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with plenty of mixed feelings on Ings as you can see below.

“Awful. Was certain it would be the downfall of Smith and it will go against what works for us under Gerrard.”

“Not enjoying them as a pair tbh. They’re not on the same wavelength nor compliment each other. I know this kind of partnership takes time but we lose energy up top in our pressure from the front with Ings as the spearhead.”

Villa fans react to Bailey injury update

Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey will be ‘missing for a number of weeks’ with a muscle problem.

As to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been reacting to the injury update ahead of the trip to Leicester City on Sunday.

Bailey’s Villa career is yet to really get going due to a number of issues, with the Jamaica international starting just four games this season. The £28.8m summer signing had to be withdrawn in the first half of the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday with a quad problem.

Gerrard revealed that the results of the 24-year-old’s scan were not positive, with Bailey set to be sidelined until after Christmas.

Matt Targett and Danny Ings may also miss out against the Foxes, although the Villa manager is prepared to give the pair every chance to prove their fitness in the meantime.

Villa shared Gerrard’s comments regarding Bailey via their official Twitter channel on Friday. Here is what these fans had to say in reply, with many not exactly thrilled as the Jamaican is dealt yet another injury setback.

Bentancur "interested" in Aston Villa move

Aston Villa have had a very busy January transfer window, having brought in the likes of Robin Olsen, Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho earlier in the month followed by their recent signing of Calum Chambers on a permanent deal from fellow Premier League club Arsenal.

With deadline day approaching, it seems as though the Midlands club could be looking at getting yet another new player through the door before the end of the month.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Pete O’Rourke had his say about Villa’s reported interest in Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur and the possibility of Steven Gerrard’s side signing him before the end of the month.

He said: “It’s a deal Villa are trying to do. I think the player is quite interested in a move to Villa as well, so this one could go right down to the wire.”

Since joining the Italian club back in 2017 from Boca Juniors, the 24-year-old – who is currently picking up £74k-per-week according to Salary Sport – has gone on to make 181 appearances for Max Allegri’s side across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 18 assists along the way.

Fans would be ecstatic

Having seen the club strengthen their squad in almost every area of the pitch except central midfield this month, Villa fans would surely be over the moon if Bentancur is keen on joining and eventually makes the move in the coming days, especially with his experience of playing for a top club like Juventus, where he has won seven trophies and played in the Champions League.

With Villa having the lure of offering a player such as Bentancur the opportunity to play in the Premier League, they can also grant him the experience of playing and learning under the management of one of the league’s greatest midfielders in Gerrard, which could be a factor as to why the Uruguayan is apparently keen on the move.

Moving forward, if Villa can secure a deal for the Juventus ace before Monday’s transfer deadline, they could end the month with a flourish in what has been a very productive window for the club in terms of their recruitment.

Man United: Erik ten Hag hire now close

Manchester United are moving ever closer to appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s long-term successor at Old Trafford with Ralf Rangnick’s interim contract ending shortly.

What’s the word?

Man United have had two primary candidates when considering who to replace Solskajer with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag in the running.

However, it looks as though it will be the latter who wins the race to become their new manager.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein, with the Italian journalist taking to Twitter on Monday evening to reveal the following news:

“Sources close to Erik ten Hag confirm @David_Ornstein report: his appointment as new Man United manager is at final stages. Nothing signed yet – back room staff to be decided. No announcement expected this week. Ajax and Man Utd will be in contact about €2m clause.”

Fans will be buzzing

At long last, the wait now finally appears to be over.

It has been a turbulent campaign for the Red Devils, moving from an outside bet for the Premier League title after signing the likes of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, to a club now who are unlikely to even secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

As a result, to rid the club of those scars and bring in a new manager, especially one as exciting as ten Hag should be incredibly exciting for supporters.

Pochettino has long been admired by the United hierarchy and it was always going to take someone special to leapfrog him in their thoughts.

However, that’s exactly what ten Hag is; special.

The 52-year-old has only ever coached a senior team in the Netherlands so a move to the Premier League, and in particular United, will be an arduous task.

Yet, this only feels positive. The Dutchman was asking for assurances over the amount of say he’d have with incoming transfers and considering he is now close to being appointed, it must mean he is going to play a leading role in proceedings not just in the dugout, but behind the scenes too.

Considering the mess that Man Untied are embroiled in, having a boss with more of a say can only be a good thing for the progression of the club on the pitch.

Combine that with his winning mentality – he has secured two Dutch cups and two Eredivisie titles with Ajax – and this seems like a hire that United have done their due diligence on.

Fans will be elated to finally put this saga to bed.
