Faisalabad, Karachi seal victories on opening day

A round-up of the first match day of the Faysal Bank Super Eight T20 Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jun-2011A solid all-round performance by Faisalabad Wolves helped them ease past Multan Tigers by 69 runs in the first game of the Faysal Bank Super Eight T20 Cup at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.Multan began well after choosing to bowl, removing Mohammad Hafeez for a duck. Faisalabad’s No. 3 batsman Asif Ali counterattacked, putting on century and half-century stands with Asif Hussain and Misbah-ul-Haq on his way to a 59-ball hundred. Asif Ali’s knock included seven sixes, and ensured Multan needed to chase 200.Quick cameos from Multan’s top order kept them in the game in the first half of the chase. Hafeez struck twice, removing Zeeshan Ashraf and Naved Yasin in consecutive overs, to begin a slide. Left-arm spinner Hasan Mahmood polished off the middle and lower order with figures of 5 for 23, as Multan lost their last seven wickets for 46 runs.

Tight spells from seamer Tariq Haroon and offspinner Haaris Ayaz helped Karachi Dolphins defend a middling total against Rawalpindi Rams in the second game, played at the same ground. Chasing 146, Rawalpindi lost a couple of early wickets to fast bowler Tanvir Ahmed and never quite recovered. Haroon struck twice, on either side of a run-out, and by the eighth over Rawalpindi were five down. Umar Amin stayed firm and ended up with 54 not out, but Rawalpindi were never abreast of the required-rate and were eventually bowled out. The Karachi spinners wrapped up the rest of the wickets, with Ayaz taking 2 for 15 and left-arm spinner Azam Hussain taking three.Having chosen to bat, Karachi were given a quick start by Shahzaib Hasan, who scored 35 off 28 and Rameez Raja (2), who got 29 off 20. Wickets fell in the middle overs and Karachi were not able to make a final push; only 23 runs came off the last four overs. But the total of 145 proved enough in the end.

Anthony Ireland claimed five wickets as promotion-chasing Gloucestershire bowled out Middlesex for 236 on the opening day of the County Championship Division Two match in Bristol. But 19-year-old Josh Davey ensured Middlesex gained one batting point with a fine 61 on his Championship debut. Davey received good support from fellow debutant Toby Roland-Jones, who contributed 19 to a ninth-wicket partnership of 53, which was broken when Roland-Jones miscued a pull to give Ireland his fifth wicket.Ireland finished with 5 for 25 from 11 overs, while there was good support from Gloucestershire’s four other seam bowlers. Gemaal Hussain took 2 for 70 and there were also two wickets for Jon Lewis. Gloucestershire reached the close on 81 for 2 with Chris Dent unbeaten on 13 and Hamish Marshall not out 21.After Gloucestershire captain Alex Gidman won the toss, his decision to insert Middlesex looked like it might backfire as Sam Robson and Scott Newman put together an opening stand of 63. Robson was reprieved before a run had been scored when James Franklin dropped a difficult chance at gully off Lewis.Steve Kirby had both batsmen playing and missing during an impressive spell from the Pavilion End, but Robson and Newman otherwise remained largely untroubled. The game changed dramatically in the 50 minutes before lunch, as Gloucestershire took five wickets for 34 runs in 11 overs.Newman was the first to go when he edged Hussain to Gidman, who took an excellent low catch at first slip. Gidman took another sharp catch to dismiss Owais Shah off Lewis, and two wickets fell in the next over as Ireland had Robson lbw for 39 and Neil Dexter caught down the legside by wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty.Gloucestershire had more to celebrate from the last ball before lunch when John Simpson edged Ireland to Hamish Marshall at second slip. Dawid Malan and Davey hinted at a Middlesex revival with a partnership of 37 for the sixth wicket, but Malan departed for 29 when he was caught at cover by Chris Taylor off Franklin.Ireland claimed his fourth wicket when Tom Smith fended a delivery into the hands of Kadeer Ali at short leg, and it became 181 for 8 when Tim Murtagh snicked a drive off Hussain into the gloves of Batty. Davey and Roland-Jones responded well and Davey reached his half-century with a hook off Kirby for three runs. His maiden fifty came from 102 balls and contained eight fours. The pair guided Middlesex to 224 for 8 at tea, but both were dismissed within three overs of the resumption. Roland-Jones top-edged a pull to Kirby and Davey then thick-edged a drive off Lewis to Franklin at gully.Gloucestershire’s reply got off to a good start as Ali and Batty took the score to 28 without loss off nine overs before light rain forced the players from the field. But when they returned Pedro Collins struck twice, bowling Ali with a ball which kept low and then trapping Batty lbw for 20.

Leeds’ summer decisions to thank for Kalvin Phillips’ new deal

[ad_pod ]

Leeds have come a long way since Andrea Radrizzani took over in 2017.

They appointed a world-renowned manager in Marcelo Bielsa, reached the playoffs and now once more sit in a promising position in the league table.

After six matches the Whites are third after heading into the international break with their first Championship defeat of the campaign.

But good news has followed as the west Yorkshire side aim to bounce back and that falls at the feet of Kalvin Phillips.

The midfielder has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal, putting months of speculation surrounding his future to bed.

It’s a contract that could be worth around £40k a week, thus putting him on parity with both Patrick Bamford and Kiko Casilla.

For someone who played 44 times in the league last term, it’s richly deserved, but it may not have been possible without some of the brutal decisions taken from the Leeds hierarchy.

This summer, Leeds had a colossal clear out as 31 players departed Elland Road either on temporary or permanent terms.

Victor Orta quickly got to work on slimming down a squad that wasn’t particularly big on the face of it.

Leeds have used just 17 players this season, the fewest of anyone in the division, so that perhaps gives an indication they didn’t need them after all.

But considering the injury problems Leeds suffered in 2018/19, the sheer volume of those who walked through the exit door may have come as a surprise.

What was particularly brutal was seeing players like Tom Pearce, Clarke Oduor and Aapo Halme leave. They were all young individuals who were in and around the first team boasting promise but were – perhaps a tad surprisingly – shipped out.

Of course the most prominent departures were Kemar Roofe and Pontus Jansson, the latter who left partly for financial fair play reasons after a £5.5m switch to Brentford.

But it’s the club bringing in various sums of money during the course of the window that has arguably led to a new deal for Phillips even being possible.

The Whites’ wage bill, according to Angus Kinnear, has skyrocketed since Radrizzani took over.

Telling the BBC last week he said: “The biggest thing to understand is how much the wage bill has grown under Andrea’s tenure. The wage bill when he took over was for a mid-table team and there was a correlation with how much you spend on the wage bill and where you finish.”

Consequently, is it any surprise Leeds shipped on so many players? Probably not.

The Whites may have been brutal in their strategy but in terms of securing the long-term future of the club it’s a justifiable approach.

Losing 31 players has cleared the way for potential new terms for some of their biggest names, one of which is Phillips.

An academy graduate, his renewal can be seen as somewhat of a coup given the events of only a few months ago.

Leeds swatted away £14m interest from Aston Villa as they demanded £30m for the midfielder.

The 23-year-old was also being mooted with a potential switch to either Wolves or Bournemouth.

Those didn’t happen as the Whites fended off strong interest.

But ultimately, letting players like Jansson and Roofe seep through the net has allowed for greater freedom in how Leeds go about maintaining the integrity of the squad.

Whether Phillips stays the full five years will depend on Leeds’ success in their pursuit of Premier League status but, in regard to the short-term, they’re making terrific strides.

Their mass clear-out this summer seems to have put them in a position to offer players like Phillips the kind of terms they want and merit, something the board must also be considering for other players who are out of contract.

As things stand, Mateusz Klich and Pablo Hernandez could both depart on a free after Stuart Dallas and Liam Cooper put pen to paper on new deals in midweek. It would be a shock if they all left but Radrizzani and Orta’s brutal decisions may be beneficial for them.

Ultimately it’s cleared the wage bill and has given the Whites some leniency in terms of who they can now tie down.

Leeds got rid of a brimming pool of players who weren’t going to play a significant senior role and subsequently it’s now allowed them to keep Phillips without any wider ramifications coming into play.

This is a big step in the right direction from those at the top of Elland Road and, even if some of the transfers in the last few years haven’t paid off, they must be hailed.

Real Madrid duo laud Karim Benzema as the team’s leader against PSG

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

We are getting closer and closer to Real Madrid’s big clash with PSG in the Champions League.

For Los Blancos and Zinedine Zidane, but also for their opposition, this will most likely be the biggest test of the ongoing 2019/20 campaign thus far.

Real recording two league wins and two draws is probably not what Zidane envisaged when he returned to Santiago Bernabeu but their 3-2 victory over Celta Vigo at the weekend appeared to point to an upturn in form.

Beating the reigning Ligue 1 champions would go some way to proving the point.

Zidane and Raphael Varane faced the press just before the game and they both identified one man as their leader: Karim Benzema.

Here’s what Varane said about the Frenchman, who’s returning to his homeland for this rather special occasion:

“Of course [he’s a leader]. With no Ramos and Marcelo, he’s the oldest player in the team. He’s been one of the leaders in the dressing room for many years now and has the squad’s respect. He’s a player who’s in excellent form and is extremely important in terms of our attacking play. He’s right in the midst of hitting maturity, is a fine all-round player and we need him in these kinds of games”.

Zidane had pretty similar words to share about his forward and echoed Varane’s sentiment:

“I always want Benzema in my team. He’s up for every game, but perhaps he’ll be even more up for it tomorrow night because he’s from Lyon and given the rivalry between Lyon and PSG. He’s a key player but so too are the others. We have to think as a team.”

While Zidane did mention the importance of Real Madrid sticking together and performing as a team, he also mentioned Benzema as a “key player”, something that seems to be a big theme of the ongoing season.

Rightfully so

Benzema has so far scored four goals and assisted one in the four games he’s played in La Liga, and it’s safe to say that, by Zidane’s design or not, he has taken it upon himself to lead this team.

Seeing how Real Madrid will be without other veterans like Sergio Ramos, who’s serving a suspension, and Marcelo, who’s out injured at the moment, the 31-year-old will have to assume that key role himself and warrant the big words coming from his coach and his teammate respectively.

The Galacticos’ season has been far from perfect so far but it’s only the beginning and their path to redemption might start with a victory against one of Europe’s best.

This also sounds like the best possible stage for Benzema to back up the praise he’s been given and show he’s ready to pull his team-mates over the line in their hour of need.

Rangers fans struggling to contain their excitement over journalist’s claim on Ryan Kent

We’re all tired of the ‘will they or won’t they’ between Rangers and Ryan Kent, aren’t we? Well, sorry to break it to you, but Rangers fans aren’t.

The Ibrox faithful have endured a long summer of conflicting and confusing reports on Kent’s future, but freelance journalist Andrew Dickson has now claimed it is looking “increasingly likely” that a deal will indeed happen.

Steven Gerrard had admitted the Gers were being priced out of a move for the winger, who scooped the PFA Young Player of the Year award last season, but Dickson claims a loan with an obligation to buy could see the deal go through.

Of course, fans are ecstatic about the news, as the 22 year-old was electric when he was in the mood last term.

Not only did he grab six goals and nine assists, but one of those assists was for Ryan Jack’s decisive goal in the 1-0 win over Celtic, which was Kent’s first game back after an injury lay-off.

With Sheyi Ojo starting life at Ibrox in impressive form, one has to wonder just how lethal the Gers’ front line could be with Kent on the opposite flank, and fans are praying Dickson’s claim comes true.

Take a look at some of the best reactions down below…

Leicester: Supporters on Twitter call for fast Chilwell recovery

Leicester City got their second point on the board yesterday when the Foxes left Stamford Bridge with a point after a well-fought 1-1 draw. However, they had to do so without the injured Ben Chilwell, who took to Twitter before the game to say that he’d be back soon.

The young England international defender’s absence meant that it was a return to the starting eleven for Christian Fuchs, the Austrian defender who was the club’s first-choice left-back during their title-winning 2015/16 season.

Without Chilwell, Brendan Rodgers’ side still managed to secure an impressive 1-1 draw away at Stamford Bridge, but having the young defender back in the side will be a big boost. Indeed, last season saw the defender contribute four assists, as well as averaging 1.5 tackles, 3.6 clearances and 1.1 interceptions per game, WhoScored.

You can read the Foxes’ calls for a speedy recovery from Chilwell here:

The Leicester fans, as you can see, will be keen for Chilwell to return against Sheffield United next weekend as they continue to chase their first win of the season.

Crystal Palace fans react to bizarre Patrick van Aanholt to Liverpool report

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Crystal Palace fans on Twitter have reacted to a bizarre report from The Sun, via The Daily Star, that says Liverpool turned down the chance to sign Eagles left-back Patrick van Aanholt.

The Sun, via The Daily Star, reported that Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has been considering bringing in a new left-back to cover Andrew Robertson, and that the Dutchman had emerged as a possible option.

However, the report adds that the German boss decided against a move for the 28-year-old, who likely would have found first-team minutes hard to come by at Anfield seeing as Robertson made 48 appearances in all competitions during the 2018/19 campaign.

Instead it looks as though he will remain at Selhurst Park, where he has certainly been something of a divisive figure among Eagles supporters previously because of his performances on the pitch.

While he can clearly be a big threat from an attacking point of view given he has 11 goals in 82 appearances for Roy Hodgson’s men, it is his defending that sometimes leaves a lot to be desired.

Palace fans took to Twitter to have their say on the exit rumour, and while one labelled it as “complete nonsense”, another simply said “good grief”.

Aston Villa can get more out of Wesley by signing Leao

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

It’s hard not to admire Aston Villa’s transfer business so far this summer.

They’ve completed shrewd deals by bringing Kortney Hause and Anwar El Ghazi back after their loan spells with the club whilst they’ve also completed a £22m deal to land Wesley Moraes.

The Brazilian is a powerhouse, winning 2.5 aerial duels per game in last season’s Champions League, but he could become even better for Villa if they sign another forward.

On the chalkboard

Last weekend, the Villans were reported to be in the running to sign Lille striker Rafael Leao.

In the past, he’s been described as the ‘Portuguese Mbappe’ by French journalist Julien Laurens, and it’s easy to see why. He’s quick, can get in behind and is a natural finisher having scored eight in 16 starts in Ligue 1 last term.

At 20 years of age, he’s very much one for the future but he’s still shown great strides in the senior game, playing 26 domestic matches in 2018/19.

But how could he benefit Wesley?

Well, playing him alongside another striker could be game-changing. After all, he played in a two when he was at Club Brugge, proving to be a menace for opposition defenders.

Therefore, adding someone who has pace alongside him, could mean a devastating new combination for Villa.

Leao is at his best when he’s on the shoulder of the defender, making clever runs in behind after being slipped through by his teammates.

Wesley stands at 6 ft 3 and therefore they could be an ideal partnership given he plays in a different manner. If Leao does indeed arrive, Villa could opt to play more direct if they choose to play with two strikers.

Their new signing from Belgium could come slightly deeper for the ball, using his strength and excellent ability in the air to flick and feed the ball in behind the defence for Leao to run onto.

Throughout last season, Villa’s new striker supplied his teammates with ten goals, proving to be an efficient creator, as well as a goal scorer, netting 17 times.

His all-around play seems to come to the fore when playing alongside another striker, so the potential arrival of Leao could prove extremely beneficial in terms of Wesley’s creative nous.

Leeds fans don’t want Woods to replace Phillips

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have made it clear that they don’t want the club to sign Ryan Woods if he is joining to replace Kalvin Phillips.

Many users on the social media platform were full of praise for the Stoke City midfielder’s ability, but they weren’t too keen on the idea of him replacing their star man, who has been offered a new contract according to Phil Hay.

Reputable journalist Alan Nixon stated on Sunday that the Whites are keeping tabs on the former Brentford man in case Aston Villa sign their 23-year-old however.

Phillips has been linked with an exit all summer long with Norwich, Bournemouth and Villa all linked. The Midlands club seem to be the most likely to secure his signature at this point though.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for both Phillips and Woods, but if the Whites line up with the 25-year-old in place of their current holding midfielder then fans won’t be happy.

I always rated Woods. Think he is a quality player but please, not at the expense of our Kalv. Why not just have both…? #lufc
