Hughes family wants big crowd at funeral

Phillip Hughes’ family hopes as many people as possible will attend his funeral in Macksville on Wednesday. Approximately 5000 mourners are expected to attend the funeral service, which will take place at 2pm in the sports hall at Macksville High School, with overflow areas on the school’s two sports ovals.Cricket Australia also expect 300 to 400 dignitaries and past and present players to attend the service, including the entire New South Wales and Australia Test squads. James Henderson, Hughes’ manager, told reporters in Macksville on Tuesday that despite the limited capacity of the school hall, the family hoped anyone who wanted to attend would do so.”For the people who aren’t able to get into the hall, the family has made arrangements for several overflow areas at the local high school,” Henderson said. “So everybody should come to celebrate Phillip’s life. That’s what the family wants.”After the service, players will form a guard of honour and a public procession will then follow the hearse through Macksville.”People who are at the high school during the service are asked to line the streets and pay the most fitting farewell to Macksville’s favourite,” Henderson said. “Also tomorrow evening, the whole town will stop to celebrate Phillip’s life. The family wants to see as many people as it possibly can.”Hughes died at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney on Thursday after being struck by a bouncer during the New South Wales-South Australia Sheffield Shield match at the SCG on Tuesday last week. Henderson said the Hughes family had been touched by the support shown by the public since the tragic event.”The past week has certainly been a very, very difficult time for the family and for the broader community,” he said. “And they’ve been very moved from the support that’s come from here in Australia and obviously all the way around the world, where Phil’s untimely and sad passing has affected so many people.”They’re very proud that their son has made such an impression on people who knew him and obviously people now who have come to know him in this unfortunate circumstance … Hughesy was a real no-fuss guy, and I know he would be looking down on this and wondering what the hell is going on.”The funeral will be broadcast live on television in Australia and public viewings of the service will also take place at the SCG, Adelaide Oval, WACA and Bellerive Oval. Australia’s captain Michael Clarke will deliver a tribute to Hughes at the funeral and will be a pall-bearer, along with Aaron Finch and Tom Cooper.

Rampant Kings XI storm into semi-finals

Kings XI Punjab walloped Northern Knights by 120 runs to storm into the semi-finals of the CLT20 with three wins in three

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran26-Sep-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
In 11 innings for Kings XI Punjab this year, Manan Vohra has reached at least 25 on ten occasions•BCCIIf you wanted to see how diverse Twenty20 games get, you should have got yourself a ticket to the double-header in Mohali on Friday. First the Barbados Tridents and Cape Cobras played out a Super Over thriller, after which Kings XI Punjab walloped Northern Knights by 120 runs – the biggest win in six seasons of the CLT20 – to storm into the semi-finals.Kings XI lived up to their billing as a bunch of power-hitters as batsman after batsman clouted boundary after boundary to run up a total of 215. The openers Manan Vohra and Virender Sehwag set the tone with a high-octane 102-run stand, with David Miller rounding off the innings with an 18-ball 40. Knights’ biggest strength was their new-ball opening pair, but Trent Boult and Tim Southee had combined figures of 8-0-93-0 on the day.In the face of a massive target, Knights’ batting rolled over for 95. Only someone desperate to “take the positive out of it” would point to it being a marginal improvement over the 92 Knights folded for in their previous game. Knights captain Daniel Flynn was more forthright, “We got found out today,” was his assessment. At no stage of the game were Kings XI second best. Vohra began with successive boundaries in the first over, showing the same irresistable form that has fetched him ten scores of 25 or more in the 11 innings since he got his chance midway through the IPL season. All through, he has shown that he isn’t fazed by the quality of the opposition bowlers, and today was no different as Boult and Southee couldn’t find a way past his made-for-Twenty20 batting.Vohra outpaced Sehwag during their stand and Kings XI’s run-rate never dipped below 10. Sehwag revealed he had promised to give Vohra one of his bats if the 21-year-old hit a century. Vohra was zooming towards the mark, with consecutive sixes off Ish Sodhi taking him to 65 as early as the ninth over. The third ball was short, and seemed set to go over the rope once more, but Vohra picked out deep midwicket. After the game, Sehwag hoped Vohra would get the bat next match. There was a brief lull after that wicket, but Sehwag powered on to his half-century before Miller took over. He caned Scott Styris for 19 in the penultimate over to bring up the 200 as Kings XI showed that even with Glenn Maxwell, Thisara Perera and George Bailey only making small contributions they could still post a mammoth total. “We ticked off the KPIs (key performance indicators) as a batting group,” Bailey said.Knights never looked like they had the necessary firepower for the chase, even with the inclusion of an extra batsman in Daniel Harris. What slim chances they had became even slimmer once Kane Williamson departed attempting a ramp shot, and Anton Devcich was caught off a reverse-sweep. Maxwell’s direct hit ran out the experienced Styris, before the spinners took over on a surface providing them a little help. Legspinner Karanveer Singh picked up four as Knights’ lower order keeled over without a fight, leaving them with a horrendous net run-rate which virtually rules them out of the semi-final race.

Hales looks beyond T20 vision

Alex Hales showed he was more than a T20 specialist with a high-class century against a strong-looking Warwickshire attack as Nottinghamshire took charge of the Championship match at Edgbaston

George Dobell at Edgbaston29-Jun-2014
ScorecardIt might seem odd to draw conclusions on a player’s white-ball ability from a red-ball game, but Alex Hales must have given himself a decent opportunity of forcing his way into England’s ODI side – and their World Cup squad – with a high-class century against Warwickshire.Nobody doubts Hales’ ability in T20 cricket. He has proved himself a destructive player for England and enjoyed a spell at No. 1 in the international rankings. It is his ability to withstand the moving ball that is debated. It is whether he has the technique to prosper against two new balls in 50-over cricket when the pitch might be assisting seam bowlers. For all the talk of England needing more explosive starts, they also need batsmen who can rebuild and defy.So it was relevant that his century here – one short of his career-best score – came when his side had been inserted and against an attack containing four Test bowlers and two England Lions bowlers. And it was relevant, too, that not only did he put away the bad balls – and goodness he was spoiled with the amount of them – with more than a hint of class, but he left or blocked the good ones with a judgement and straight bat that he rarely displayed in 2013.Last season Hales averaged only 13.94 in first-class cricket. For all his dominance in the shortest format, he looked fragile outside the off stump in the red-ball game. He was dropped from the Nottinghamshire side for a while at the start of this season. But he has worked on playing straighter and remaining compact and here it was noticeable that he was rarely drawn into playing away from his body or across his front pad. If it was his driving that stood out – and with his reach, he provides bowlers little margin for error – his leaving might have pleased him more.Alex Hales struck 25 fours and a six in his 183•Getty Images

He must wish he could play at Edgbaston every week. He has now passed 50 six times in eight first-class innings and scored three of his eight first-class centuries on the ground. He averages an eye-watering 130.80 here and has scored – thanks to two innings of 90 against Middlesex and another big century against Sussex – more than 600 first-class runs in June alone.”Going into the 2013 season, I had only practised my T20 skills throughout the winter,” Hales said. “It was probably to the detriment of other areas of my game. T20 cricket was all that was on my mind.”But now I’m targeting the England 50-over side. I want to prove to people that I’m not the T20 specialist some have labelled me. I’m happy with my form and I know I’ve got to churn out the runs. I’m desperate to be in Australia for the World Cup.”There are two caveats to this innings. The first was that, for his first 70 or so runs, Warwickshire bowled unusually poorly – they conceded 228 in boundaries in the day – and the second is that, when he did face a spell of hostile bowling, he was a bit less convincing.Boyd Rankin, bowling with a ball 70 overs old, twice had Hales in trouble with short deliveries. The first time he flapped, unsure whether to pull or evade, the second time he popped the ball into the vacant short-leg position. Those moments aside, however, Hales was imperious. He did not give a chance and at times treated bowlers with fine reputations with something approaching disdain. He looked a high-class player.Warwickshire, though, will reflect on a day when their bowlers performed far below their potential. After Varun Chopra, captain in place of Jim Troughton, whose long-standing back problem has ominously flared once again, inserted Nottinghamshire on a green-tinged wicket, he would have expected his bowlers to probe and trouble the batsmen.Instead he watched as his attack dropped short despite a painfully short boundary towards the Eric Hollies Stand. Chris Wright and Keith Barker both looked jaded, while Chris Woakes over-pitched and strayed in line. It allowed Phil Jaques to pummel his way to a half-century from 62 balls.”The first session just wasn’t good enough,” Chopra said. “There was no lack of effort, but we didn’t get it right and we made it easy for them. We clawed it back a bit in the afternoon, but whether it is due to the sheer amount of cricket we’ve been playing or something else, I don’t know.”Rankin, easily the pick of the attack, was not introduced until the 43rd over and after six of his colleagues had been given an opportunity. He soon proved the folly of that decision, striking with just his ninth ball – James Taylor caught behind as he tried a pre-emptive pull at a delivery far too full for the stroke – and then again in his next over, when Samit Patel gloved a lifter down the leg side. Much later, he returned with the newer ball to trap Hales, half forward, with one that nipped back.Until then, Jonathan Trott had been the pick of the Warwickshire attack. While he spent much of the day fielding at midwicket – he did not appear in the slips at any stage – he was pressed into service as his colleagues conceded 146 in a morning session of 29.5 overs. He soon produced a good one to Jaques that swung in and nipped away off the seam to take the outside edge.Despite their strong position, Nottinghamshire might yet reflect they have let a golden opportunity slip away. Steven Mullaney, pulling a long-hop to the man on the midwicket boundary, and Riki Wessels, guiding a wide one to point, also gifted their wickets away and, with Hales and Peter Siddle falling in the dying moments of the day, Nottinghamshire have not quite established the overwhelming position they might have done.

South Africa trounce India in harsh welcome

South Africa brought Floyd-like edge to the word pink as they welcomed a clearly undercooked Indian side to the country with a 141-run hammering

The Report by Sidharth Monga at the Wanderers05-Dec-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsPink wasn’t pretty for India: Quinton de Kock punished the Indian bowlers•AFP

South Africa brought Floyd-like edge to the word pink as they welcomed a clearly undercooked Indian side to the country with a 141-run hammering. Quinton de Kock, the baby face in baby pink, combined ferocity and cheek in his 135, and assisted by supporting fifties from Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and JP Duminy, gave India 359 to chase. On a pitch made to look placid by their bowlers, the India batsmen were on a hiding to nothing against a six-man pace attack that was at them from the start, when it took them 16 balls to even touch a Dale Steyn delivery.During that first spell, Steyn caused India more trouble than the visiting bowlers did in the whole South African innings. On their first day of international cricket on this trip, the India bowlers were given the best of conditions: they won the toss, bowled when the pitch was at its freshest, and avoided the dew. However, with the exception of Mohammed Shami, they didn’t test the batsmen for long enough, and when they did their fielders were off their game. Amla could have been run out on 7, and should have been caught on 8, but was let off by the India openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma. De Kock, too, survived a half chance early in the innings, but that was all impression the bowlers created.Amla started scratchily, he scored just 65 out of the 152-run opening stand, but de Kock looked in fine touch from the start. The third ball he faced was a leg-side half-volley from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and he tucked into it. The last ball of that over was short and wide, and was cut away for four more. Mohit Sharma at the other end produced a fine fourth over, but he saw a top edge from de Kock fall short of the diving Shami at third man, and Rohit at cover did not come in to take a loopy leading edge from Amla. Two overs earlier Dhawan had missed the stumps from pretty close at mid-on.Amla would rub it in by soon taking 14 off three balls to reach 23 off 29: a punch through cover, a walk across the stumps to play the pick-up over midwicket, and then a cut past point. De Kock needed no such acceleration, and his 27 off 23 had taken South Africa to 53 in nine overs. Shami began with a maiden, and it was about the time when Dhoni goes to his spinners for control back in India. At the Wanderers, however, the ball didn’t grip and the pitch didn’t slow down; R Ashwin bowled too short, and Ravindra Jadeja too fast.It was not all milking from the opening pair: they found boundaries in six of the seven overs between Nos. 22 and 28. After 11 overs of spin for 62, MS Dhoni had to go to pace, not least because South Africa had called for an early Powerplay in the 30th over. An offcutter from Shami, and a mistimed chip from Jacques Kallis gave India two wickets in that 32-run Powerplay. During that period de Kock smacked a Mohit slower ball for six, and then took two singles to bring up his century. It was just a sign of things to come.As Dhoni went back to spin in the 36th over, de Kock and AB de Villiers began to push into a higher gear. Without any violence – mainly through chips over mid-off, a late cut and one slog sweep – de Kock went from 101 off 102 to his eventual 135 off 121. When Virat Kohli, who took de Kock’s return catch, gave the batsman a send-off, little did he know the wrath that awaited India. De Villiers and Duminy hit the bowlers around at will. Most of it was just clearing the front leg, and smacking length balls to all the stands. De Villiers even hooked a six from one knee. This was a statement of intent: we can do what we please. The yorkers were few, the slower balls easily picked and dispatched, and de Villiers and Duminy added 105 in the 7.4 overs they batted together. Between them the two hit nine sixes and eight fours. De Villiers had scored 77 off 47 when he fell, which looked sedate in comparison to Duminy’s unbeaten 59 off 29. An even hundred came off the last six overs. Then it was over to the other wing of the welcome committee. Conditions couldn’t have looked more different. The ball began to seam, swing and bounce. Dhawan looked comfortable during two Lonwabo Tsotsobe overs, but top-edged the first ball from Morne Morkel. Steyn softened Rohit up well and proper, but it was Virat Kohli who fell first to a shortish delivery from Ryan McLaren that seamed away to take the edge. In the next two balls, McLaren delivered the good-old one-two to Yuvraj Singh: a bouncer into the crash helmet followed by a fuller one that took the top of off stump.Suresh Raina came in, didn’t fancy the strike, called Rohit through for a poor run. Rohit should have said no. He now had a lot of time to go over his innings. The contest was finished well before it became 65 for 4 in the 16th over. Even as South Africa bowled their less-menacing bowlers, MS Dhoni’s 65 only delayed the inevitable.

'Mentally we were not into this game' – Dhoni

MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings captain, has put his side’s crushing loss to Mumbai Indians down to a lack of focus following their seven-game winning streak in IPL 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff06-May-2013MS Dhoni, the Chennai Super Kings captain, has put his side’s crushing loss to Mumbai Indians down to a lack of focus following their seven-game winning streak in IPL 2013. The batting in the chase of 140, Dhoni said, was “a comedy of errors”.”Before the match our coach Stephen Fleming was a bit worried about us being complacent. I think that was on the cards after winning seven games in a row. Mentally we were not into this game at all,” Dhoni said after the game. “We should have got 140. There was a comedy of errors, especially, in the batting department.”Super Kings folded for the lowest score in IPL 2013, bowled out for 79 in the 16th over. The Mumbai Indians bowlers were very efficient, but several of the batsmen threw away their wickets. While it was a nightmare evening for the team, Dhoni said he was happy they were shaken up at this stage of the tournament. “I think it was a good wake-up call for us,” he said. “With a few more games to go, we got it at the right time.”Coach Fleming reflected Dhoni’s thoughts: “It was the first day in the tournament which we would like to forget. I guess the positive part about this defeat is that it happened now. Four more games are left [for Super Kings in the round-robin stage] and it’s a pretty long tournament to maintain your standards.”But winning seven in a row was a pretty good effort. The nature of the competition is such that it [winning eight consecutive games] has not been done before. There is a reason for that because getting up every day, performing well and being consistent is tough work. Today we were not just good enough to do that.””There was a comedy of errors, especially, in the batting department.”•BCCI

Both Dhoni and Fleming agreed that Super Kings’ bowlers did a good job. “The way we started the match was fantastic. We also got wickets at regular intervals,” Dhoni said. “[Dwayne] Bravo bowled really well. It was a mistake on my part that I didn’t give him another over. Having said that, death bowling still remains a concern.”Fleming said the pitch was a bit different from the usual offerings in the IPL, but that did not justify his team’s implosion. “It was a little different to what we have been playing on. The spongy nature of the Mumbai wicket made stroking the ball a bit difficult. There wasn’t a lot of sideways movement or lot of spin. Just the nature of the bounce was a bit different to any other pitch. But that’s not an excuse for being bowled out for 70-odd.”For the second time in the tournament, R Ashwin received a rather baffling promotion up the order. In the game against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Ashwin opened with Super Kings chasing 120. Here, with Super Kings 18 for 4, he came out at No. 6 ahead of Dhoni. Fleming said that decision was taken to try to stabilise the innings before the finishers came in. “Ashwin is a capable bat. The most important thing was stopping the wickets.”In not chasing a big total, it did not matter wasting two-three overs. We have faith in Ashwin and thought if he can get a 10 to 20-run partnership going with Hussey it may change the game with the likes of Dhoni and [Ravindra] Jadeja to come.”
