Chelsea player ratings vs Brighton: Cole Palmer can't be kept on the bench! Blues new boy unlocks Nicolas Jackson to seal pressure-easing Carabao Cup win

The summer signings combined to ensure the Blues' three-game winless run came to an end at Stamford Bridge

Nicolas Jackson was the hero for Chelsea as they ended a miserable run to beat Brighton 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday. An excellent team move culminated in a deft pass from Cole Palmer – who impressed throughout his first start for the club – into the striker's path as he lashed home the Blues' first goal in four matches.

Jackson had a good chance saved later in the half and then thought he had doubled his team's lead, but was denied by the linesman's flag.

Mauricio Pochettino will breathe a sigh of relief after his team's winless streak stopped at three games, with the likes of Palmer, Ian Maatsen and Marc Cucurella making strong cases for a place in the starting XI going forward.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Stamford Bridge…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Robert Sanchez (5/10):

Distribution was terrible! Gifted his former team two golden chances in the first half but a good save denied March an equaliser.

    Marc Cucurella (7/10):

Fought hard to win the ball and did well despite despite being on his weaker side at right-back.

    Axel Disasi (6/10):

Comfortable on the ball and made a strong block in the second half.

    Levi Colwill (7/10):

Strong positioning and decent distribution, proving he is worthy of a spot in the starting XI.

    Ben Chilwell (5/10):

Not his strongest performance at left-back – looked suspect defensively and offered little going forward.

    Midfield

    Moises Caicedo (5/10):

Gave away a huge chance in the first half and was not convincing throughout.

    Chimuanya Ugochukwu (5/10):

Should have been sent off for a second yellow card late in the first half and his passing was not up to scratch.

    Cole Palmer (7/10):

Saw plenty of the ball and tried his best to influence attacking moves, culminating in a nice assist.

    Attack

    Ian Maatsen (7/10):

Looked positive on the ball and played a role in the opening goal. Pressed hard and was effective at cutting out Brighton's crosses on his side.

    Nicolas Jackson (7/10):

Under pressure from the Brighton defence and struggled to deal with it until he applied a fine finish to a lovely team move. Thought he had a second but the flag ended his celebration.

    Mykhailo Mudryk (6/10):

Another bright display with some good touches and smart attempts to link up with Jackson.

    Subs & Manager

    Raheem Sterling (4/10):

Had plenty of time but barely saw the ball.

    Enzo Fernandez (5/10):

Played the last 15 minutes but did not get to impact the game.

    Conor Gallagher (5/10):

On the same time as Enzo and tried to get on the ball.

    Armando Broja (6/10):

Only on for the last four minutes and did more in a few seconds than Sterling did in over 20 minutes.

    Mauricio Pochettino (7/10):

Will be happy to see his team finally get a goal and a win after a worrying run of results. Will hope Palmer and Jackson's link up is a sign of things coming together, but still needs to find a way to get Mudryk to capitalise on the promise he has shown in recent matches.

Who owns every NWSL club? Serena Williams, Patrick Mahomes, Kevin Durant & everything you need to know about star-studded investors

NWSL clubs are owned by some big names, with James Harden, Naomi Osaka, Eli Manning and Sue Bird among the others to invest in U.S. women's soccer

From sporting icons such as Serena Williams, Patrick Mahomes and Kevin Durant, to award-winning actresses such as Natalie Portman, Eva Longoria and Jennifer Garner – the NWSL, the top division of women's soccer in the United States, has seen a flurry of star names invest in its teams in recent years.

There seems to be an ever-growing list of celebrities putting their money into the league as it, as well as the sport as a whole, continues to take big steps forward.

GOAL explains who owns every NWSL club below, highlighting more of those big names along the way.

GettyAngel City

Angel City is undoubtedly the club with the most star-studded ownership group, one led by actress Natalie Portman, entrepreneur Julie Uhrman and venture capitalists Kara Nortman and Alexis Ohanian.

Founded in 2021, big names such as tennis legend Serena Williams, actresses Jennifer Garner and Eva Longoria, plus a whole host of U.S. women's national team icons – including Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, Shannon Boxx, Lauren Holiday and Abby Wambach – were involved from the get-go.

Plenty more have become part of the growing group of owners since, too. They include another tennis icon in Billie Jean King, WNBA star Candace Parker, TV host James Corden and Super Bowl LVI champion Matthew Stafford.

Ownership in the NWSL isn't all rosy and glamorous, though. Sadly, there have been a lot of controversies in the league in recent years, one of which saw the Chicago Red Stars' former coach, Rory Dames, banned from coaching in the division ever again.

Investigations found Dames had been emotionally and verbally abusive toward players and that reports by players, specifically U.S. women’s national team star Christen Press, were mishandled and largely ignored by U.S. Soccer, the NWSL and Arnim Whisler, the majority owner of the Red Stars.

Whisler has since been removed as chairman of the board and is in the process of selling the club.

Houston Dash is owned by the same ownership group as the Houston Dynamo, which is led by Ted Segal. He fully controls ownership after buying out his remaining minority partners in the summer of 2022.

The group also includes some star names in the sporting world, with boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya and NBA star James Harden also on board.

GettyKansas City Current

Back in 2017, two-time NWSL champions FC Kansas City ceased operations and saw its player-related assets transferred to NWSL expansion team Utah Royals. Three years later, when the Royals had to cease operations after controversy surrounding the team's owner, financial executives Angie and Chris Long took the opportunity to bring the NWSL back to Kansas City with the Royals' assets.

The Kansas City Current's ownership group is led by the pair, but it has also had a star name attached to it since day one as Brittany Mahomes, wife of NFL quarterback Patrick, also bought a stake in the team in late 2020.

The Kansas City Chiefs' star, a two-time Super Bowl winner, joined the ownership group in January 2023.

BCB turns down Shahadat's appeal

Bangladesh Cricket Board’s disciplinary committee has turned down Shahadat Hossain’s appeal to play in this season’s Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League

The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s disciplinary committee has turned down Shahadat Hossain’s appeal to play in this season’s Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League.Shahadat was temporarily suspended by the BCB in September 2015 after the Dhaka police registered a case against him and his wife on charges of assaulting their housemaid under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. They were arrested on October 5, but were later granted bail in December.ESPNcricinfo has learned from some of the board’s policy-makers that many in the BCB were not keen on revoking Shahadat’s suspension until he was cleared by the court, as they felt that it would set a bad precedent.Shahadat was initially kept in the B+ category in the Dhaka Premier League’s roster subject to BCB’s withdrawal of the suspension. On Saturday, AJM Nasir Uddin, the disciplinary committee chairman, confirmed that Shahadat’s suspension stood unless the court dismissed the case.”Shahadat Hossain had made an appeal, but we couldn’t take it because of some legal complications,” Nasir said. “His appeal stated that he had settled with the plaintiff. He presented to us a court direction which says that charges are pending in this case. It also said that the court’s decision is needless in regard to whether Shahadat should be allowed to play in the Dhaka Premier League or not.”As a result, we can’t consider this matter at this time. If the court had given a more clear-cut directive or it received his settlement with the plaintiff, we could have considered him. So we will wait for court’s further directive in this matter.”On Saturday morning, Shahadat turned up at the National Cricket Academy in Mirpur for training with his club Mohammaden Sporting, and was confident of the BCB withdrawing his suspension.

New Zealand call up Mathieson as cover

New Zealand have called up Andrew Mathieson, the Central Districts seamer, as cover for their limited-overs squad.

New Zealand have called up Andrew Mathieson, the Central Districts seamer, as cover for their limited-overs squad. They have recently lost Trent Boult and Corey Anderson to injury and were already without Adam Milne from their first choice World Cup seam attack.Mathieson, a former New Zealand U19 player, was the leading wicket-taker in the 2014-15 Ford Trophy – New Zealand’s domestic 50-over competition – and has been in the UK playing club cricket as Sidmouth’s overseas player. Mathieson claimed 31 wickets in the Ford Trophy, with Michael Bates the next highest wicket-taker with 19.While 25-year-old Mathieson bowled in the nets the days before the fourth ODI and could play a part as a substitute fielder, he is not expected to feature in the final ODI or the T20I that follows. He would not, in normal circumstances, be considered “next in line” for selection and his call-up may well owe something to the fact that he is already in England and that there is very little cricket remaining on New Zealand’s tour.Coincidentally, Sidmouth are scheduled to take-on North Devon in the Devon Premier League on Saturday. Craig Overton had been expected to play for North Devon but now he, and Mathieson, are unexpectedly unavailable on international duty.

Be calm and play to strengths – Rayudu

Ambati Rayudu mixed caution with aggression to help Mumbai earn their fifth win of the season, and said his experience and growth as a batsman had helped him analyse the situation better than before

ESPNcricinfo staff06-May-20152:21

‘Rayudu played smart, sensible cricket’

Ambati Rayudu has played crucial cameos under pressure for Mumbai Indians in the past and the match against Delhi Daredevils was another example. He mixed caution with aggression in his 40-ball 49 that helped Mumbai earn their fifth win of the season, and said his experience and growth as a batsman had helped him analyse the match situation much better than before.”It is not all about hitting fours and sixes, you have to play according to the situation. I think once you are a seasoned cricketer you know how to handle situations and I am happy I could do that,” Rayudu told iplt20.com. “It gives me immense happiness to come out on top. I have played quite a few innings for Mumbai like that. It is just trying to be there till the end, being calm and playing to our strengths.”Pressure brings the best out of me. I stay a lot calmer when I have a target in mind and I know how to pace an innings. I am happy that I could do it today.”The match was precariously placed when Rayudu went to bat, with Mumbai 40 for 4 in the sixth over. He was involved in two consecutive fifty-plus partnerships with Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard, which set up Mumbai’s five-wicket win.”When it came down to getting ten runs per over, all we had to do was hit one boundary an over and get singles off the remaining balls. It is exactly what we were doing till the 19th over. We wanted to leave around six or seven runs for the last over, but we left eight and at that time it was all about one boundary.”Pollard also played a significant role in the run chase with 26 off 14 balls, which included three sixes. His form has been promising this season – 259 runs at an average of 37.00 and a strike-rate of 167.09.”You just back yourself, your strengths and ability. In the last couple of games, this is the role I have been given,” Pollard said. “For me, it’s about seeing the ball and trying to hit it.”After a disastrous start to their season – losing their first four matches – Mumbai have got their campaign back on track with five wins in their last six games. “We haven’t done much differently since the start, we have been training hard,” Pollard said. “It wasn’t the ideal start for us but I think the win against Sunrisers Hyderabad helped. After we got that win, the time off before the other games was really good for us. We relaxed, did fun stuff and took our mind off from cricket. We knew what we were up against coming back into the tournament. So we are now starting to reap the benefits.”The talent was always there. It was just a matter of getting the combination and our mindset right. We are in a happy space now. We took a little time to adjust and I’m sure we can do a good job in the coming games.”

Broad brushes off wicketless streak

Stuart Broad is coming off a long break from one-day internationals in Australia and is so far wicketless in three matches but is not concerned and believes England have a strong attack forming

Sidharth Monga in Perth28-Jan-2015The last time Stuart Broad played an ODI before this triangular series fielders were not allowed to move laterally while anticipating a reverse sweep, bowlers were allowed to pause in their delivery stride, Saeed Ajmal and Sunil Narine were still legal bowlers, and Paul Farbrace hadn’t yet caused furore by leaving Sri Lanka for a job with England weeks before Sri Lanka travelled to England. And Broad had the new ball. The world has changed now. Chris Woakes has taken the new-ball duties, and Broad has been the weakest link in England’s attack. He has gone at 6.26 an over, and is yet to take a wicket in three matches. He believes, though, that he has been going all right, and it is only a matter of time before the wickets column is populated.”I had a good time myself working on one-day skills, and actually I feel like I have delivered my plan okay,” Broad said when asked if it has been difficult to come back after a long layoff. “I’ve obviously not taken the wickets that I want to but I feel like I’m actually delivering what’s in my mind. The way one-day cricket is now, wickets will come to you in a short time. You’ve seen a few sliced off to point and a few slower balls get hit straight up. When it’s your day, it’s your day and you’ve got to cash in.”Broad sorry for tweet; wasn’t aimed at KP

Stuart Broad has clarified his controversial and now deleted tweet regarding minimum wages was not aimed at Kevin Pietersen, who had recently spoken with certain disdain about low earners on the English county scene. Broad also said that the hash tag “#stay#humble” was aimed at himself. Broad had tweeted: “I’ve heard if you earn minimum wage in England you’re in the top 10% earners in the world. #stay #humble.”

A few days earlier, Pietersen had sparked controversy when he seemingly ran down the county circuit by saying, “All the muppets who are on £18 grand, £15 grand, either you become better or you go and do something else. The best players would play against each other week in week out. That’s how you become better.”

After England’s training session at the WACA, Broad sought to clarify his tweet. “No,” he said when asked if it was aimed at Pietersen. “To back him up a little bit he does use that word [muppet] a little bit, even about himself sometimes.

“It’s a very important role in cricket, that development role. No one’s going to start on big wages or top wages, you have to earn your stripes. I think that [15000-18000] is actually below the minimum cap anyway so he’s a bit off the mark. I don’t think he meant any offence by them but just a little bit misguided I think.”

Broad said he was genuinely amazed by the discovery he had made about the wages, and didn’t mean to offend anybody. “I was genuinely fascinated by the size of the world,” he said. “If you saw that one you saw my two after it, clarifying my position if I offended anyone. It was genuinely innocent, sorry to offend anyone if anyone did take offence to it.

“I was genuinely surprised… I heard that stuff and I was quite surprised. What amazed me was the size of the world really. Genuinely there wasn’t much in it. If you saw the main tweet then I put two out, in the middle of the night. I didn’t mean any offence. The hashtag was aimed at myself. Maybe I misjudged it a bit. Hopefully that will die down a bit.”

Broad conceded, though, that he has been releasing the pressure too often. “Four-and-a-half months is quite a decent layoff,” he said. “You grow within each game. Realistically I have bowled one too many bad ball each spell. A cheap four. In one-day cricket you can’t afford to do that.”But also I know as a player I do go through these little periods where I don’t pick up wickets in a couple of games, and then I take a handful. Hopefully come semi-final final time at the World Cup and it will be my chance to shine.”Broad said he would love the new ball again, but he is happy with the current challenge. “You do like taking the new ball,” he said. “It’s the best time to bowl and the best time to get wickets and set the tone. But I’m happy with my role. It is a tough role, bowling first-change. You come on seven-eight overs in, and they are having a dart and the ball is not doing anything. It is quite tough.”With the balance of the four seamers, using the taller bowlers to try and hit the wicket in that period is a good option. We did it in 2008 when Harmy [Steve Harmison] came out of retirement, and it seemed to work for us. I’m quite happy doing that, just need to find a way to get wickets.”In the time that Broad has been away, Woakes has developed in Sri Lanka and at the start of this trip while Steven Finn his best since before the career crisis he suffered in Australia last year. Broad praised Woakes, but especially pleased for Finn.”The biggest one I have seen is the change in confidence in Finny,” he said. “The way he has been around the group. He is more chirpy. His head’s up a lot more. At nets he looks a lot clearer what he is working on. Great to see him get the five-for at Brisbane. Just rewards for how he has been feeling.”Broad does not feel four quicks is one too many, and also believes there is enough variety among them although you would ideally want a left-arm quick in there with their impact on World Cups being significant. Only one squad, West Indies in 1979, did not include a left-armer although Brendon Julian played a limited role for Australia in 1999 and Nathan Bracken did not play a match in 2003 before having a key role four years later.”One-day cricket you have to dovetail a little bit,” Broad said. Not everyone is going to have their day each day. You have to come to the party when you are feeling good that day. All of us are slightly different. As long as we can keep an attacking mindset we will be dangerous. As long as we don’t try to protect ourselves, let’s keep trying to get a slip in, keep trying to take wickets, that’s the only way to go out there.”Teams have won World Cups without left-armers, [but] you can see even just from T20 stats, left-armers have got records in white-ball cricket. Every team would want one in their team. But I think we have enough variety with different heights, each of us has a slightly different slower ball, that sort of thing. We are just looking forward to putting a complete game together. Our fielding has been awesome. Just need the batting and the bowling to come to the party at the same time.”The last time Broad played before this series also happens to be the time England won two matches in a row in one series. He was aware that back-to-back wins have been rare, but was a little surprised to learn it has not happened since March 2014 in West Indies. How he will be hoping that is another change over this Friday and Sunday.

Spinners hurt Central Zone progress

Central Zone’s batsmen squandered a strong start against South Zone, giving away five wickets to spinners, including three to part-timers, on a batsman-friendly pitch in Delhi

Central Zone’s batsmen squandered a strong start against South Zone, giving away five wickets to spinners, including three to part-timers, on a batsman-friendly pitch in Delhi. Most of their batsmen threw their wickets away and only Rajasthan’s Robin Bist crossed fifty. The platform was laid by the top order after Central opted to bat. Since the pitch had a tinge of green and some moisture, openers Faiz Fazal and Jalaj Saxena were cautious through the first 45 minutes, making only 25 as they were consistently beaten by the pacers’ swing. Vinay Kumar then had Saxena caught behind with his trademark outswing, even though the batsman seemed unhappy with the decision.No. 3 Bist upped the run rate half-an-hour after he walked in by smashing Pragyan Ojha for an inside-out six and he soon struck three fours within nine deliveries. He has only one first-class century in two years, but his footwork against the spinners and the back-foot strokes against the quicks showed he wasn’t lacking in confidence.Vinay Kumar used his bowlers in short spells through the day, employing as many as seven in the first session during which Central made 75 for 1. The second session changed things with two wickets each at the start and end of the session. In B Aparajith’s fourth over, Fazal sliced a short ball to point and Naman Ojha handed a low catch to Vinay Kumar at mid-off.Ashok Menaria joined his Rajasthan team-mate Bist and rotated the strike regularly to ease the nerves after Central were 94 for 3. His three fours in an over off Abhimanyu Mithun showed he was in good touch as the duo put on 68 to take Central past 150. The breakthrough came through another part-timer when Hanuma Vihari’s innocuous delivery down the leg side had Menaria stumped for 37. Wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik showed off his reflexes again in the next over when he took a sharp catch even though replays showed the ball had not touched Mahesh Rawat’s bat, and Central were 163 for 5 at tea.Arindam Ghosh started his innings after tea the way Bist had – with two confident fours. He was also put down at short cover by Robin Uthappa on 11, but his stand with Bist didn’t last long as a leading edge from Bist ballooned to Mithun at midwicket. Captain Piyush Chawla, playing his 100th first-class match, put on a solid 52 with Ghosh to take them past 200. And just when Chawla also looked settled, he threw his wicket away by chipping a catch to Robin Uthappa at cover three overs before stumps. That became the last ball of the day as the umpires then found the light wasn’t good enough to continue.

Mithali Raj and Meg Lanning scored half-centuries before four wickets for Sana Mir helped ensure victory for a Rest of the World XI against MCC at Lord’s. Charlotte Edwards’ top-scored with 70 for MCC but they fell 41 runs short in the match arranged as part of the Lord’s bicentenary celebrations. The MCC team featured a majority of current England internationals, with the retired Claire Taylor, playing for the first time in three years, and Arran Brindle joined by Holly Colvin after a break from the game.
