Despite the innings-and-23-run victory at Sabina Park the West Indies selectors have made three changes to the squad for the second Test against England at North Sound in Antigua. The allrounder Ryan Hinds has been recalled and Lendl Simmons, who hit 282 against England for West Indies A in St Kitts, has replaced Xavier Marshall. The injured Dale Richards has been left out.Hinds replaces Amit Jaggernauth, the offspinner, and has been in outstanding domestic form this season. He currently tops the four-day averages with 585 runs at 83.57 including a career-best 240 for Barbados against Leeward Islands. His runs are supplemented by 18 wickets at 18.66 with his left-arm spin.Marshall has paid for his second-ball duck in the first Test which continued his poor form after a lean tour of New Zealand. Before the game Chris Gayle said Marshall was under pressure, but had the backing of the team. That support has lasted one match and it means there will be at least one change to a winning unit.Simmons, who has eight ODI caps and is the nephew of former Test opener Phil Simmons, has been propelled into the Test squad after his marathon effort in England’s second warm-up match where he batted for the best part of five sessions. Either he or Hinds could replace Marshall in the batting line-up.Whereas Simmons could come in as a straight swap at No. 4, Hinds’ inclusion would probably mean a shift in the batting order with him slotting in at No. 6. In that case, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash would move up one place each.Richards, who was set for his debut at the age of 32, was ruled out of the opening Test after injuring his foot playing against the Leeward Islands. He is out of action for three weeks but could be back in contention for the third Test on his home ground in Barbados.West Indies squad Chris Gayle (capt), Devon Smith, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Brendan Nash, Ryan Hinds, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Jerome Taylor, Sulieman Benn, Daren Powell, Fidel Edwards, Lionel Baker.

Howey makes huge Leicester transfer claim after failed move

Former Leicester City star Steve Howey insists that Leicester City would have happily sold James Maddison to Arsenal if they had made an acceptable bid, but hopes that he will now knuckle down.

Maddison was heavily linked with a potential move to the Gunners throughout the summer transfer window.

They are reported to have tabled a player-plus-cash bid but it fell short of Leicester’s £60m valuation of the playmaker, per Football.London. Arsenal signed Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid instead.

Maddison has already been reintegrated into Brendan Rodgers’ side, making three Premier League appearances already this term.

Howey believes that he could well have moved on if Arsenal did table the kind of bid Leicester expected, but has urged the club and the player to get on the same page in the next few months.

Indeed, he believes that Maddison simply has to return to the kind of form that saw the Gunners express their interest in signing him.

The playmaker scored eight goals and registered seven assists in the Premier League last season.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Howey said: “I think Leicester would have happily taken the money but that deal’s dead now, with Odegaard coming in.

“For me, I think it’s a case of Brendan Rodgers getting him in and saying ‘listen, that deal’s gone, concentrate. If you want to be away, give the performances that you were giving that got you noticed in the first place, then you haven’t got an issue and if you want to go and we can get good money for you, brilliant, happy all round. But if you have them performances and you’re quite happy, we’ll offer you a contract’.”

Blues lose Cameron and Henriques to injury

New South Wales have called on the fast bowlers Aaron Bird and Burt Cockley after their attack took a couple of injury hits ahead of the FR Cup game against Queensland in Cairns on Saturday. The Blues have named a 12-man squad that does not feature Moises Henriques or Mark Cameron, both of whom had been expected to play. The destructive Cameron, who was part of the Australia A tour of India last month, has struggled to get over an ankle injury he picked up during the Blues’ recent Sheffield Shield game in Perth. Henriques, the promising allrounder who spent time with Australia’s squad in Darwin in September, has battled a side injury in the past few weeks and remains unable to bowl.It could mean a possible one-day debut for Cockley, the right-arm fast-medium bowler who played his sole first-class match late last summer. Bird had been chosen in the squad for the opening FR Cup match of the season but was left out of the starting line-up.The Blues began their campaign with a tight victory against Western Australia last week. They will be taking on a Queensland outfit that features the Australia one-day players Andrew Symonds and James Hopes, but lost to Tasmania at the Gabba on Wednesday.FR Cup squad Phillip Hughes, Peter Forrest, Daniel Smith (wk), Dominic Thornely (capt), Steven Smith, David Warner, Steve O’Keefe, Grant Lambert, Nathan Hauritz, Nathan Bracken, Aaron Bird, Burt Cockley.

Braithwaite prefers to join Tottenham

According to Sport, Barcelona forward Martin Braithwaite now ‘prefers’ to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer and is ‘among the favourites’ to possibly replace Harry Kane if he leaves.

The Lowdown: Spurs in striker hunt amid Kane drama…

Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici has his sights set on strengthening new boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s forward options before the start of 2021/2022.

In the last few weeks alone, Spurs have been linked with a fair few strikers in Dusan Vlahovic, Simy and even Lautaro Martinez.

This comes amid question marks surrounding the future of superstar Harry Kane as Manchester City continue to push for his signature.

The Latest: Braithwaite ‘prefers’ to join Spurs…

Bringing the latest on Tottenham’s search for a new forward, Sport believe that Denmark international Braithwaite ‘prefers’ to join the Lilywhites over London rivals West Ham.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed the possible departure of Kane would allow Spurs to sign two new strikers with the 30-year-old listed as a possible candidate to replace their star man if he were to leave.

Sport even claim that Braithwaite is ‘among the favourites’ to succeed Kane and he has asked for more time to consider his future, especially considering the option of a move to Spurs ‘attracts him much more’ than the Irons.

The Verdict: Avoid…

The 56-cap international has apparently restored his reputation in England following a solid Euro 2020 campaign, but we’d advise Spurs to avoid Braithwaite as a favourite to succeed Kane in the event of his departure.

He scored just two goals in 11 La Liga starts for Barcelona last season, leaving little wonder they are desperate to get him off the wage bill.

Braithwaite’s age also indicates that Tottenham stand to gain little to no sell-on value from his signing.

If he is to sign, it should be in support of either Kane or a superstar replacement, not as the replacement himself.

Liverpool linked to Lorenzo Insigne

Liverpool have received a potentially significant boost in their pursuit of Napoli winger Lorenzo Insigne.

What’s the story?

The Reds have been linked with a move for the highly-rated 30-year-old in recent weeks, with manager Jurgen Klopp keen to bolster his faltering forward line.

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (as reported by the Liverpool ECHO), Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis will allow Insigne to depart the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium for a fee in the region of €25 million (£21.3m) this summer.

Insigne only has one year remaining on his current contract with his boyhood club and is yet to agree fresh terms with the Serie A side, meaning Liverpool could pick him up in a cut-price deal.

Jurgen Klopp would love him

The 5 ft 4 forward has become one of football’s deadliest attackers in recent years and enjoyed a stellar 2020/21 campaign, bagging 19 goals in 35 top-flight appearances for Gli Azzurri.

His impressive tally of 11 assists in all competitions highlights Insigne’s unique ability to both put the ball in the back of the net with ease while creating opportunities for teammates on a regular basis.

After several standout performances at club level during 2020/21, the diminutive winger carried his form onto the international stage for Italy during the European Championship.

He notched two goals in six outings for Roberto Mancini’s charges, playing a pivotal part as the Italians claimed the Euro 2020 trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Insigne’s eye-catching displays during this summer’s tournament earned several plaudits from onlookers, including former Arsenal legend Ray Parlour.

Parlour said on talkSPORT (6:53 am, July 9, 2021). “Insigne is a real livewire. He gets on the ball, he runs at you, he is an excellent little player,” he added.

With both Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino way below their scintillating best last season, Klopp is thought to be in the market for some fresh attacking impetus, and Insigne could provide just that.

Although some may view his age as a slight concern, his lowly asking price should make this deal a risk worth taking, and the German tactician would surely love to be able to call upon Insigne’s services over the next couple of campaigns.

Spurs: Kane set to miss start of the season

As per The Telegraph, Harry Kane is set to miss the start of Tottenham’s Premier League campaign and their opening match against Manchester City following his participation at the European Championship with England.

The Lowdown: Kane future up in the air

Of course, Kane’s future is up in the air – he told Tottenham earlier this summer that he wishes to leave the club (Sky Sports).

Manchester City have been heavily linked with the England captain as they look to replace Sergio Aguero in attack.

The Latest: Kane to miss season start

Unsurprisingly, Kane has been given some extra time off this summer after helping England reach the final of Euro 2020.

As a result, no matter which club he is with by 15 August, he will not take part in the 2021/22 Premier League’s opening weekend.

The Verdict: Makes sense

This comes as no great surprise. As the Three Lions skipper and most important player going forward, Kane started every single one of England’s games at the summer tournament and completed two matches which went to extra time (Transfermarkt). He also made 49 appearances in all competitions for Spurs during the most recent campaign, so he is bound to be in need of a reast.

By the time the new season starts, he could have completed a transfer to the Citizens, even if Daniel Levy and co are desperate to keep him in north London (Manchester Evening News). With the 27-year-old being Tottenham’s top league goalscorer for seven seasons in a row and being hailed as a “special player” by former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho, it’s little wonder that the club’s hierarchy want to do all they can to retain his services.

In that case, perhaps it would be better for them if he is unavailable – the last thing they would want is to lose to a Kane-inspired display from the Premier League champions if he swaps Spurs for Manchester in the next three weeks.

In other news, this man expresses his disappointment at missing out on the Spurs managerial position.

Ex-Leeds star says Traore is not good enough for a top-four club

Former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that Wolves winger Adama Traore is not good enough to play in a top-four side.

According to journalist Duncan Castles, Leeds have made a £30m offer for Traore. However, the 25-year-old has no interest in joining the Whites as he aims for a Champions League level club.

Traore had his struggles last season. While he was able to beat defenders as usual, averaging an impressive 4.1 dribbles per league game (via WhoScored), he was far from productive in the final third.

The Spaniard came up with just four goal contributions in the Premier League, two goals and two assists, and for Palmer, he simply has not fulfilled his potential.

“No, he’s not good enough,” the former Leeds player said. “He has all the attributes to be one hell of a football player, but he hasn’t really fulfilled his potential.

“I don’t see him getting a top-four club at all. I don’t see stability and where he would play at a top-four club.”

Certainly, as mentioned, Traore does have the skill set to be one fine player. However, presently, that lack of an end product is probably holding him back.

Celtic have strong interest in Soppy

Celtic have now completed the acquisition of three players during the summer transfer window but Ange Postecoglou won’t stop there.

The Hoops are keen on landing a few extra faces as they aim to bolster their side ahead of attempts to reclaim their Scottish dominance.

What’s the word?

Postecoglou wrapped up a deal to bring Liel Abada to Paradise on Wednesday evening and after signing a winger, they’re working hard to land a full-back.

Osaze Urhoghide can feature in that third of the pitch but they want a more permanent fixture.

Celtic have been linked with Sacha Boey of Rennes in the last few days but they’re targeting his teammate Brandon Soppy too. He also happens to play at right-back.

Fabrizio Romano revealed the news earlier this week but provided an update on the latest edition of the Here We Go podcast.

The journalist said: “Brandon Soppy is an interesting right-back. I love this player, I’m sure he will be one of the next generation talents from Rennes.

“Celtic want him. They have an interest. Also, French clubs are working on it but Celtic have a strong interest in Soppy.”

A necessity

Supporters should be absolutely elated with the way Celtic are going about their business at the moment.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Postecoglou and Dominic McKay have seemingly identified players capable of improving the overall feeling of the squad and individuals who will fit his style of play.

The addition of tricky winger Abada demonstrates that while their chase for Carl Starfelt is also impressive. He prioritises distribution of the ball from defence, rather than carrying it forward like Kristoffer Ajer does.

The addition of Soppy would also help the Hoops significantly.

Not since the days of Mikael Lustig have they had a truly consistent full-back. Jeremie Frimpong was described by Neil Lennon as one of the best young players he’s worked with but proved to be inconsistent from a defensive point of view.

Jonjoe Kenny hardly helped their cause either. The Everton full-back spent half a campaign on loan but made a catastrophic number of errors in all three of the Old Firm derbies he played in.

He’s returned to Merseyside and as a consequence, they don’t have a senior right-back apart from Anthony Ralston.

Soppy could fix that headache but also fit seamlessly into Postecoglou’s way of playing.

The Australian prefers his players to press and hound the opposition regularly. Fortunately, Soppy is up to scratch in this department, completing 40% of his pressures – the fifth-best tally at Rennes last term.

Furthermore, he is one of the best in his position in Ligue 1. Last term, he attempted 4.03 tackles per 90 minutes which put him in the 98th percentile for full-backs in the French top-flight.

Per FB Ref, Soppy was in the 96th percentile for successful pressures, the 88th percentile for dribbles attempted and the 94th percentile for progressive carries of the ball. To top things off, he was one of the most fouled players in the division, ranking in the 99th percentile at 2.09 fouls drawn per 90.

On that evidence, he’d be a first-class addition to the Celtic ranks. Supporters should be delighted they’re trying to sign him.

Leeds suffer Michael Olise blow

Leeds United have suffered a potential blow with the news that Crystal Palace are set to sign rumoured Whites target Michael Olise from Reading.

The Lowdown: Olise impresses for Reading

Olise caught the eye for the Royals last season, starting 37 of their 46 league games and appearing in 44 of them overall.

Not only that, but the 19-year-old registered 12 assists in the league, with only Norwich City’s Emiliano Buendia (16) recording a better tally.

Leeds have been linked with a summer move for Olise, but it looks as though they are set to miss out on the signing of the midfielder.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Palace set to sign youngster

According to a recruitment source at Football Insider, the Frenchman will join Palace instead, after the Eagles triggered his £8million release clause.

Olise is expected to become Patrick Vieira’s first signing since taking charge at Selhurst Park, with Leeds having to look other targets.

The report details that Marcelo Bielsa’s side were ‘closely trailing’ Olise and were even the favourites to sign him at one point.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-8/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Was he a primary target?

While Olise is undoubtedly a talented young player, it does appear as though Leeds’ interest had cooled in recent times, so it shouldn’t be too much of a setback so long as they have other targets in mind.

It would have been no bad thing to snap up the midfielder given his impressive creative spark and potential, but Bielsa may believe a more established name is needed in the middle of the park as the Whites look to really push on and challenge higher up the table next season.

Leeds may have European aspirations next season and Olise is unlikely to have been a key starter for the Whites, given the heights they have reached recently, so perhaps a more experienced alternative will now be on the agenda.

In other news, Leeds could also miss out on the signing of another player. Find out who it is here.
