Ishank Jaggi made his highest first-class score and his second double-century to hold off Tripura’s push for a win and earn Jharkhand a draw and a point in Dhanbad. Jharkhand began the day on 127 for 5, needing another 93 to avoid an innings defeat. But Jaggi and Kaushal Singh (71) thwarted Tripura with a 146-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Jharkhand were ahead by only 42 when Kaushal was bowled by Manisankar Murasingh but Jaggi found support from the lower order led by Shahbaz Nadeem (30). The pair put on 66 for the eighth wicket. Samar Quadri played out 13 deliveries to make one run but he helped Jaggi add another 53 for the ninth wicket. Jaggi faced 314 deliveries and hit 22 fours and three sixes. Jharkhand ended their innings on 409 for 8 and Tripura batted out the remaining three overs without loss.
ScorecardHyderabad openers Tanmay Agarwal and Akshath Reddy made centuries in the second innings but hosts Kerala took away three points in their drawn encounter in Wayanad. Kerala captain Sachin Baby’s double-century on day three had given his side a big first-innings lead, and he also took only his second first-class wicket when he had Agarwal caught for 110. It was the only wicket Hyderabad lost, after an opening stand of 235. Agarwal made his second hundred in his second match, faced 229 deliveries and hit 15 fours. Reddy scored an unbeaten 104 off 225 with ten fours and two sixes.
ScorecardHaving taken the first-innings lead on day three, Himachal Pradesh bowled out Goa for 184 in the second innings in a drawn game in Porvorim. Resuming on 377 for 9, the visitors’ last wicket fell two overs into the day and they were dismissed for 381, a lead of 24. Goa then crumbled against the Himachal spinners after an opening stand of 51. Gurvinder Singh and Karanveer Singh picked up three wickets each while Bipul Sharma took two. Only opener Sagun Kamat (58) and No. 4 Darshan Misal (51) made more than 30 and No. 9 Amit Yadav contributed an unbeaten 26.
ScorecardPlay was curtailed again in Delhi but Services ensured they collected three points from the draw. Services started on 218 for 4, needing only 17 to go past Andhra’s 234. They lost two wickets with no addition to the overnight score before Deepak Punia and Devender Lochab took them past Andhra. Punia was unbeaten on 29 as Services were dismissed for 286 in the 105th over. DP Vijaykumar and CV Stephen took three wickets each for Andhra. In the 17 overs they batted, Andhra plodded to 19 for 1 in their second innings.

Hurricanes surge to 86-run win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBen Hilfenhaus’ personal T20 best of 3 for 14 derailed the Knights chase•BCCI

A calculated performance with the bat and ball helped Hobart Hurricanes rout Northern Knights by 86 runs in Raipur, keeping their chances of taking a knock-out spot alive. While Knights’ decision to bowl first after winning the toss seemed to have provided them with an advantage – given their recent form and knowledge of conditions in Raipur – Hurricanes made it work in their favour with key contributions from Tim Paine, Aiden Blizzard and Shoaib Malik. Blizzard and Malik added 100 runs for the third wicket and combined the dexterity of their strokeplay with smart batting in dew-heavy conditions to propel Hurricanes to 178 for 3.Tim Southee and Trent Boult have been one of the most successful new-ball pairs in the tournament so far. Prior to this game, the pair had 13 wickets between them at less than 10 runs apiece but the rest of the Knights bowling line-up had not quite matched them effectively.Five overs into their innings, Hurricanes appeared to be in a rut but Paine switched gears dramatically once the threat of Southee and Boult had been dealt with and the likes of Scott Kuggeleijn, Ish Sodhi and Jono Boult stepped in. Where the first five overs of the innings had seen the Hurricanes hobble to 20 for 1, the next five saw them accumulate 45 swift runs to quickly catch up with a healthy scoring rate.Dew became an important factor as the game progressed and with the Knights bowlers struggling for grip and control, it became easier for Malik and Blizzard to build on Paine’s efforts. As in the game against Cape Cobras, Aiden Blizzard was the lucky recipient of a reprieve, this time from Sodhi who failed to hold on to a caught-and-bowled chance. Blizzard was on 2 off 3 balls and he took his time settling into the partnership, allowing Malik to steer the innings initially. The second half of their century stand – which came off 50 balls – had Blizzard pulling out the shots, and he stormed to his fifth T20 fifty during an over in which he stroked five fours off Trent Boult. By the time Boult and Southee returned to the attack, towards the end of the innings, there was little they could do to stop Hurricanes from amassing 76 off the last five overs. While Blizzard spent some time settling down at the crease, Malik kept the innings going with deft footwork and quick wrists. The batsman had had a disappointing run with Hurricanes, but the form that had made him one of the top run-getters in the recent Caribbean Premier League came to the fore as he carved boundaries square on either side of the wicket and in the third-man region.Hurricanes’ bowling strategy paid off equally well as they opened the bowling with Ben Hilfenhaus and Joe Mennie. The ground staff in Raipur had worked hard to remove some of the dew during the innings break and it was imperative for Hurricanes to get the early wickets, to break into a middle order of a line-up that had been largely bolstered by the form of its top order. Mennie, in his third game for the side, provided the first breakthrough and he had some help from Ben Laughlin who pulled off an astonishing catch at point. Then Hilfenhaus rattled the Knights chase, striking twice in an over to remove Kane Williamson – out playing a slog – and Daniel Flynn. A couple of overs later, BJ Watling missed a full toss and was adjudged lbw and despite Styris’ efforts at stitching together partnerships, the team couldn’t recover from a position of 19 for 4. Hilfenhaus finished with his best T20 figures of 3 for 14, while Mennie, Xavier Doherty and Doug Bollinger also chipped in with wickets. Styris became the second allrounder, after Kieron Pollard, to score more than 4000 runs and take more than 100 wickets in T20s during his 27-ball 37 and that perhaps was the brightest spark on an otherwise disappointing day for Knights.

India grants $1m for Afghanistan stadium

The Indian government has approved the grant of $1 million for the construction of a cricket stadium in Afghanistan’s southern province of Kandahar. The funding was granted under the Indian government’s Small Development Project Scheme. The stadium is set to come up in Aino Mina, a northern suburb of Kandahar city, on land donated to the Afghanistan Cricket Board in 2012.Dr Noor Murad, the ACB’s chief executive officer, thanked the Indian government and the embassy in Kabul for approving the funds. “The construction of this stadium will be a major boost to the development of cricket in the southern region as well as in the whole country,” he said. “The addition of this facility will allow greater developments in terms of coaching and performance as well as regular competitions.”The announcement of the grant included the following statement: “We [India] have recognised that sports, including cricket and football, have united the country and enthused the youth more than anything else. We hope that this new facility, and the various initiatives taken by ACB, will further popularise cricket and bring greater glory to the nation.

We proved we weren't scared – Pujara

Though India are in a strong position, Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored his first overseas century to almost bat South Africa out of the Johannesburg Test, feels there is work is yet to be done

Feel responsibility to score big when set – Pujara

India’s batsmen have not only surpassed expectations, they have flown in the face of suggestions that they might be scarred and scared after the battering in the ODIs. Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored his first overseas century to almost bat South Africa out of the Johannesburg Test, feels there is work is yet to be done, though.”I think we have,” Pujara said, when asked if India had answered the concerns around being scarred and sacred. “But I think it is still early and we need to do a lot. But it is a very good start for us considering the position we are in. So we just have to take confidence from it, and look to gain from whatever we have achieved in this match and carry forward from this.”That is typical Pujara, though. Always level-headed, always hungry for more runs in an understated way. Sixteen of his 25 first-class hundreds have been scores of 150 or more. “I always like to score big runs, and being a top-order batsman it’s my responsibility,” Pujara said. “When I score a hundred and I’m set, I should try and play longer and achieve big total for the team. So, whenever I am set I feel that for the team’s purpose as well as my own achievement I should try to bat as long as possible.”Cheteshwar Pujara’s 153 was the bedrock of India’s strong second-innings total•Associated Press

Pujara was extremely cautious at the start of his innings, but once he got used to the conditions and the bowlers, he cut loose. “I was initially trying to look through the conditions as the ball was new and was doing a bit,” he said. “I was being patient, and was waiting for the opportunity to accelerate. I knew the start was important, and I was batting well even in the first innings. So it was important to see through the new ball and then play my shots.”Pujara’s celebration on reaching the hundred was different to his usual peaceful ones- a little more pumped up. This was his first century away from home. “There was a lot of talk about this tour, especially the Indian batsmen not doing well overseas,” Pujara said, agreeing that this ton was extra special. “But I think everybody took the responsibility and did it as a unit. It was an important innings for me as well because I wanted to score runs in South Africa, considering the conditions here are a little difficult.”India ended the fourth day needing eight wickets, but South Africa are not a team to be written off. They are capable of batting a day out, or even scoring 320 runs. Pujara, though, was quietly confident about India’s position because of the bounce on offer. “I think the wicket has variable bounce, and we have seen the cracks have been opening up,” he said. “We are expecting that we will get more movement tomorrow from the ball that will hit the crack. Even while I was batting in the morning, I felt that the odd ball was going up and down.”I think we are very happy with the two wickets we have got, and the conditions will be a little more difficult tomorrow. We have got enough runs on the board, and I think it will not be an issue for us. It’s important for us to get a few wickets in the first session so that we can capitalise later on.”

All six knockout matches will be played in Mirpur.Sylhet and Cox’s Bazaar were in doubt because of ongoing development in the stadiums and were given an extension by the ICC till November 30, after accepting Bangladesh Cricket Board’s request. The original deadline for the completion of the stadiums was September 30.Campbell Jamieson, the ICC general manager – commercial, said he was confident of Bangladesh hosting a tournament successfully, like they have in the past. “Bangladesh hosted the ICC Champions Trophy in 1998 [then known as the ICC KnockOut] and most recently the World Cup 2011, along with India and Sri Lanka. Following the legacies of these two successful events, as well as the U-19 World Cup 2004, I’m confident that Bangladesh will once again produce a world-class tournament.”Groups for the 2014 World T20

Group 2: WI, India, Pakistan, Australia, qualifier 2

Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, who finished outside the top eight, will compete with six other qualifying teams in the first round from March 16 to 21 for the remaining two places in the Super 10 groups. The eight teams in the first round have been divided into two groups of four teams each with table-toppers progressing to the next stage. The six qualifying teams to join the first round will be decided at the end of the World T20 qualifiers to be held in the UAE between November 15 and 30. If Bangladesh reach the Super 10 stage, they will play all their matches in Mirpur, facing West Indies, India, Pakistan and Australia. The Super 10 stage will commence with a match between India and Pakistan in Mirpur on March 21. West Indies will begin their title defence on March 23 against India in Mirpur and will play the rest of their group matches against Pakistan, Australia and a qualifying team. The women’s teams, increased from eight to ten, have been divided into two groups of five teams each. Australia, the women’s T20 defending champions, will start their campaign for a third title against New Zealand on March 23. The knockout games for both tournaments will be played on the same day at the same venue.Jamieson said a large chunk of the tickets for the tournament will be available locally: “The majority of tickets will be available for the public here in Bangladesh. I mean a very high percentage, a significant proportion. Moneygram outlets throughout the country. I anticipate the demand for tickets will far outweigh the supply, which is great for the game of cricket but it is a challenge when the sales takes place.” Tickets go on sale from November 10.

Dhawan's record 248 takes India A to final

Shikhar Dhawan’s record 248 helped India nudge out South Africa in a high-scoring virtual semi-final in Pretoria

The Report by Devashish Fuloria12-Aug-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe year keeps getting better for Shikhar Dhawan•Getty ImagesShikhar Dhawan began with Mo Farah-esque strides and ended with an Usain Bolt-like burst to plunder 248 off 150 balls – the second-highest List A score ever and the record for an A-team – out of India A’s giddying 433 for 3, in the virtual semi-final against South Africa A in Pretoria. South Africa, in reply, made the most of a flat pitch and short boundaries to come close to the target and only ran out of steam towards the end to lose by 39 runs.India had chosen to bat and the innings started with Dhawan driving one straight down the ground. A flurry of boundaries helped Dhawan and his new partner at the top, M Vijay, scoot to 91 in the 12th over, but as Pujara joined Dhawan after Vijay was caught behind for 40, there was a quiet period as the run rate dropped to below seven. It was merely the quiet before the violence.Dhawan arrived at the century-mark off 86 balls with a straight-driven boundary in the 27th over, and found his nitro booster to rocket from there on. In the 28th over, he smashed his first six, off Juan Theron, and immediately followed it with another. The projected team total was constantly being readjusted to higher levels as Dhawan kept finding the boundaries in an unprecedented attack. His second hundred came at almost double the rate as his first, taking 46 balls, as he smashed his way to becoming only the third Indian to record a double-century in limited-overs cricket after Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. At the other end, Cheteshwar Pujara had quietly brought up his own fifty off 54 balls.Dhawan would not have got his double century had Rusty Theron held on to a chance off the bowling of Roelof van der Merwe when Dhawan was on 154, but with 10 overs still left when he got past that landmark, the 11-year-old record of the highest List A score of 268 looked well within his reach. He fell 20 runs short of it to finish second best. Pujara’s unbeaten 109 off 97 seemed mild in comparison. The two batsmen scored 285 runs together in 33.2 overs, 198 of which came from Dhawan’s bat.South Africa’s bowling unit also entered record books as this was the first instance of five bowlers giving away more than 60 runs each in a List A match, but they were not the only ones to suffer. India’s bowlers were meted out the same treatment as South Africa openers Reeze Hendricks and Rilee Rossouw rampaged their way to 121 by the 13th over and a repeat of South Africa’s senior side’s memorable night seven years ago didn’t appear improbable.A couple of quick wickets fell to the spinners, but Hendricks hammered a 75-ball hundred to take South Africa past 200 in the 25th over. The ball frequently disappeared to the adjacent net-ball courts as South Africa remained abreast with the required rate. After the dismissal of Hendricks, the required rate went over 10-an-over for the first time in the 32nd over, but Vaughn van Jaarsveld, with helpful cameos from Justin Ontong and Roelof van der Merwe, kept up the hope. Van Jaarsveld fell soon after reaching to his century, top-edging an Ishwar Pandey slower delivery to mid-off, effectively ending South Africa’s challenge, as India mopped up the remaining batsmen quickly. However, on a batsman’s day, Dhawan’s knock proved to be the difference.

Injured Welegedara doubtful for Champions Trophy

Chanaka Welegedara is in doubt for the Champions Trophy after sustaining a foot injury during Rest of Sri Lanka’s List A match against Sri Lanka A on Friday. Welegedara bowled only 2.4 overs, before leaving the field with pain in his right foot and ankle. Sri Lanka leave for England on May 26, and are scheduled to play their first warm-up match on May 30 against Pakistan.”Welegedara came off immediately and is currently unable to put any weight on his right foot,” a Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) release said. “He is getting scans over the weekend and will have the results by Monday. He will not take part in the final of the SLC President’s trophy, to be played on Monday.”Welegedara, 32, had been the leader of Sri Lanka’s Test-match pace attack, but has been plagued by injury in the last 12 months, in which he only completed one Test match. He strained his groin playing England in March last year, before tearing a shoulder muscle before the Pakistan series in July. He recovered in time to travel to Australia at year’s end, but tore a hamstring early in the second Test in Melbourne, and has not played any international cricket since. Largely regarded a Test specialist, Welegedara had not played limited-overs international cricket since June 2010.He is one of four specialist fast bowlers named in the 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy, with Lasith Malinga, Shaminda Eranga and Nuwan Kulasekara also picked. Farveez Maharoof, who is not in the national squad but may have been a potential replacement, was also injured during the match and will likely be unavailable for two weeks.

Fit Tamim, Rubel likely to return in Colombo

A fully fit squad, with Tamim Iqbal and Rubel Hossain having recovered from their injuries, means Bangladesh will make a few changes to the playing XI for the second Test in Colombo. Tamim and Rubel are expected to return to the side, and the composition of the bowling attack is expected to reflect the team’s strength rather than the conditions at the R Premadasa Stadium.Despite a greenish pitch, Bangladesh have not often used three seamers, and none of them in this attack guarantees control or wickets – none of the pace bowlers average less than 50, while the lowest strike-rate is 74.”Rubel is fit, he will probably play. [But] we don’t have experience of playing with three seamers, so we have to consider that,” captain Mushfiqur Rahim said. “Everyone is fit, all sixteen players are ready for selection, unless someone pulls up tomorrow morning.”Rubel’s return could see Shahadat Hossain – despite having the best bowling average and strike-rate among the bowlers – sitting out after he had taken just one wicket in the first Test. He bowled at decent pace up front with the new ball, but as the game moved on, his lack of fitness caught up with him and he struggled to bowl at the same pace at various stages of the match.Abul Hasan, on the other hand, made an ordinary start before a notable spell on the second morning, although he had only one wicket to show for his effort. After only his second Test, Abul won praise from Kumar Sangakkara for his pace and is likely to keep his place for the Colombo Test. Robiul Islam is the other pace-bowling option in the squad, and the team management has him ready in case three pace bowlers are needed with Sohag Gazi playing as the only specialist spinner.”Our bowling attack is relatively less experienced compared to our batting. We should give them some time, because players take time to adapt to Test cricket,” Mushfiqur said. “The bowlers have to take up the challenge of bowling consistently in one area. Like our batting partnerships in the first Test, I want the bowlers to bowl in partnerships, bowling tightly from both ends.”The second spinner’s spot is a toss-up between two left-arm spinnrs: Abdur Razzak, who has a better limited-overs record, and Elias Sunny, who hasn’t lived up to his early promise in Test cricket. Razzak, the more experienced of the two, is likely to be selected ahead of Sunny, as he has the ability to offer the control that is being sought. He has been bowling well in the domestic competition and in ODI cricket, though the last time he bowled in a Test match was in August 2011.The change at the top of the order is a lot more straightforward. Tamim’s wrist injury had forced him out of the Galle Test but during the game and afterwards in Colombo, he batted regularly in the nets. Anamul Haque and Jahurul Islam opened the innings in the absence of Tamim. Given Jahurul’s reasonably better performance, particularly in the second innings, the axe is likely to fall on Anamul.
