No fresh injury concerns for Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace have been handed a big injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash against Manchester City this afternoon after manager Patrick Vieira revealed that he has no fresh injury concerns.

What’s the word?

Talisman Wilfried Zaha hasn’t started the Eagles’ last two games after returning from international duty with an illness, while long-term absentees Nathan Ferguson and Eberechi Eze are still recovering from their respective Achilles injuries.

However, Vieira confirmed in Friday’s press conference that virtually everyone had taken part in training earlier in the day, providing him with plenty of options for the tricky fixture ahead.

“This morning, we had training, and everybody was available,” said the Frenchman. “The only one that didn’t start training with the squad yet is Nathan [Ferguson]. But again, he’s doing really well, and he should start taking some part of training with the team in the next couple of weeks.”

However, despite Eze returning to first team training, Vieira disclosed that today’s encounter at the Etihad Stadium had come too soon for the 23-year-old.

“He’s been very good. He had a full week with the first team, where he did from the start to the end, and is doing really well. So I was really pleased with where he is at the moment. But it’s still too short for him to take part in the game tomorrow,” the manager said.

The former Nice boss then revealed that Zaha is doing well following his recent setback, although he refused to confirm on Friday whether the Ivorian would start against the Cityzens.

Vieira concluded: “We will make a decision tomorrow. Wilfried had a full training session with the team, and he’s doing well. We will make a final decision tomorrow morning.”

Patrick Vieira will be delighted

News that Palace have no new fitness worries will leave Vieira delighted going into one of the toughest fixtures on the Premier League calendar.

Zaha was the club’s top scorer with 11 top-flight goals last season, so his possible availability will be a huge boost for the Eagles as they attempt to cause an upset against the reigning champions, just as they have done in the past.

The south London outfit have drawn their last four games as they continue to excite and frustrate in equal measure under Vieira, and they’ll be hoping that this positive injury update will help them turn one point into three.

ICC forms committee to resolve doping row

The ICC has formed a committee to resolve the concerns of the Indian board regarding the controversial ‘whereabouts’ clause of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) code. The International Registered Testing Pool (IRTP) working group will be chaired by Tim Kerr, chairman of ICC Anti-Doping panel, and also includes ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat, BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, ICC principal advisor IS Bindra and former India captain Anil Kumble, who sits on WADA’s Athlete Committee.Eleven Indian players are in the ICC’s drug testing pool, and they have raised concerns about the clause, which requires them to inform the ICC at the beginning of every quarter (three-month period) of the year, a location and time that they will be available for an hour each day in that quarter for testing. The BCCI and the players were worried about security risks involved in providing whereabouts information in advance and have also said that the clause is a violation of privacy statutes. No dates have yet been set for a meeting of the IRTP panel, which was formed after the BCCI announced on Sunday that it would not require its players to file the ‘whereabouts’ information. WADA has been invited to send a representative to advice the panel.Lorgat reiterated that the ICC and the Indian board were keen to resolve the impasse at the earliest. “I am pleased we have constituted this group as I believe it will help to resolve the practical concerns of India players,” Lorgat said. “All of us – the ICC and its members including India – are committed to a zero-tolerance approach in the area of anti-doping.”The BCCI and the Indian board faced plenty of flak for their decision to not abide by the WADA code, including the country’s sports minister. Cricketers from all other countries and India’s top athletes have accepted the anti-doping regulations. One of the BCCI’s suggestions for solving the problem was to introduce a new cricket-specific code, and asking the ICC to walk out of the WADA umbrella.

Rangers: Sakala hits hat-trick for Zambia

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing as international news emerged involving Fashion Sakala.

As shared by the club’s official Twitter channel, the striker helped himself to a hat-trick for Zambia in their World Cup qualifying match against Mauritania on Saturday afternoon.

It adds to the treble that he scored in the 6-1 win at Motherwell in the Premiership a fortnight ago, continuing his rich vein of recent form.

Sakala was a summer arrival from KV Oostende and has so far managed to score four goals and provide one assist in nine Premiership matches (Transfermarkt).

He has become a fan favourite at Ibrox already already, as Gers supporters have created a new song for him, and many were certainly pleased with the news of his latest hat-trick.

Everton: Tom Davies told to leave

Kevin Phillips says Everton’s Tom Davies ‘might need to leave to further his career’, which has ‘stagnated’ at Goodison Park.

The lowdown

According to a report from Football Insider last month, Davies’ future is in doubt.

His £25,000-per-week contract expires in June 2023 and there’s apparently yet to be any progress towards an extension.

This uncertainty has alerted Crystal Palace, who are keeping a close eye on the situation, claims a source for the outlet.

Davies has yet to start a Premier League game this season but has played three times as a substitute, albeit for a total of just 34 minutes (via WhoScored).

New boss Rafael Benitez has shown a preference for Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure in the middle of the park.

Despite his limited involvement in 2021/22, Davies’ Transfermarkt value remains as high as it’s ever been at £16.2million.

The latest

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips reflected on how the landscape had changed for Davies for his boyhood club.

“His career has stagnated a bit,” he said. “18 months ago the kid was getting a lot of game time and playing good football.

“The problem for him is, Allan and Doucoure have come in. Their arrival has pushed him down the pecking order. He is at the back of the pecking order really.”

While supporters may be particularly reluctant to see an academy product go, Phillips says Davies has to look after his own interests.

“Is his time at Everton up? Maybe,” he said. “The fans will not want to see him leave because he is a good young player who’s come through the academy there.

“But, I think Davies knows that he might need to leave to further his career.

“Davies may need to look for a move in January and I think he’d be a very good signing for someone. I think a move will be on the cards in January.”

The verdict

There may still be opportunities for Davies. Allan will turn 31 in January and his injury record suggests there will be periods of absence.

It’s a question of whether Davies is happy to accept a back-up role at his hometown club for now, or whether he’s determined to be playing week-in, week-out further down the league.

He seems to be one of those who’s suffered slightly from the change of manager, but it’s still very early days in Benitez’s tenure.

Ismael drops Alex Mowatt injury update

West Bromwich Albion manager Valerien Ismael has dropped a promising injury update on Alex Mowatt.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by Birmingham Live, the Frenchman revealed that, despite the central midfielder requiring a substitution midway through the second half of the 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Friday evening, the 26-year-old should be available for Albion’s trip to Swansea City on Wednesday.

Mowatt was already a serious doubt for the fixture against the Blues, after suffering what was initially feared to be a broken foot in the Baggies’ 1-0 loss to Stoke City before the international break, however, the former England U20 international was deemed fit enough to feature in the West Midlands derby.

Speaking about the midfielder’s latest knock, Ismael said: “Alex is the same injury, a bruise on his toe. He took the right decision to come off, we need to manage him for the next game.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive Mowatt has been for West Brom since joining the club in the summer transfer window, the news that the 26-year-old’s injury does not appear to be too serious is sure to have left Albion fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his 12 Championship appearances this season, the £6.3m-rated man has scored three goals, registered one assist and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as taking an average of one shot and making 1.4 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £6.5k-per-week midfielder earn a rather remarkable average SofaScore match rating of 7.19, ranking him as Ismael’s second-best performer in the league.

As such, Mowatt’s apparent availability for the trip to Wales in midweek will undoubtedly provide the 46-year-old manager’s chances of picking up a positive result against the Swans with a major boost – something that the Frenchman will be desperate for in order to maintain West Brom’s push for a top-two finish in the second tier this season.

Exclusive: Windass raises serious Leeds concern

Former Premier League star Dean Windass is worried that Leeds United simply do not have enough pace in their defence.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have struggled at times this season and have yet to keep a clean sheet in the top-flight.

Already, they have been thumped 5-1 by Manchester United at Old Trafford, drawn 2-2 with Everton, and drawn 1-1 with both Burnley and Newcastle United.

Against United, Leeds fielded Liam Cooper and Pascal Struijk as they shipped five, while they switched to a back three against the Toffees, with Luke Ayling joining Cooper and Struijk in defence. Diego Llorente came in to play in the back three against Burnley, with Ayling pushed further forward.

They were unable to get a shutout after taking the advantage at St James’ Park on Friday with Windass believing that there isn’t enough speed in the backline, and he also believes that the club could continue to struggle throughout the campaign if they continue to play with the same kind of defenders.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Windass said: “I just think that you’re in the Premier League now and the two centre-halves for Leeds United, I’m not being disrespectful but the trouble is, if you don’t have pace at the back in the Premier League, you’re going to struggle.”

Rangers: Ball makes Morelos claim

Michael Ball has dropped a key claim on Rangers centre-forward Alfredo Morelos’ future…

What’s the talk?

Former Rangers defender Michael Ball has claimed that Alfredo Morelos ‘will’ leave the club as the Gers will want to maximise their profits on him.

He told This is Futbol:

“We know he will move on in the future, Rangers will want to capitalise on a good fee for him but it’s down to him, he’s got to be the key player week in and week out.”

Frustration

Rangers fans will surely be left feeling frustrated by this key transfer claim from Ball. Why is it inevitable for the club to sell star players? Supporters will want to see some ambition from Ross Wilson to retain Steven Gerrard’s top performers, rather than conceding that they will 100% leave.

Of course, there is sometimes little that can be done if a player is desperate to go and play for a top European side who are competing for the best trophies in football. For example, if Real Madrid, Manchester City or Chelsea came calling then you could excuse a player for wanting to move on, but is competing in midtable in the Premier League better than winning trophies with Rangers?

It is a subjective question and one that there is little point arguing over right now, but Wilson needs to put up a convincing case for the Gers in order to keep hold of players like Morelos. The Colombian striker has proven his worth in the Scottish Premiership and losing him would be a huge blow for Gerrard’s side.

Speaking anonymously to The Athletic in 2019, a Scottish Premiership player labelled Morelos as “non-stop” and praised the way his movement made him difficult to defend: “In my experience, he is just non-stop.

“There’s never a time when he’s walking about or not interested in the game. He’s always involved, whether that’s taking you away or dragging you closer to the ball.

“He’s kind of dropping deep now and going out wide. That’s a nightmare for defenders because he’s your player that you’re meant to be man-marking but then you’re dragged out of position and you’ve got midfield runners taking his space. That means you need to start talking to your full-backs and centre-mids to start swapping players, which makes it a lot more difficult.”

This highlights the problems he can cause defenders in Scotland, which is why Wilson must avoid a disaster over the gem. Fans will be frustrated if the club actively looks to sell him on without trying to pin him down to a new contract to keep him at Ibrox.
