Wade, Faulkner complete Australia's turnaround win

Matthew Wade’s maiden ODI hundred helped Australia recover from 5 for 78 to post 268, a total they defended by 92 runs against Pakistan in the opening ODI at an enervating Gabba

Matthew Wade performed a commendable salvage operation for Australia to put up a total that proved well beyond the reach of Pakistan in the first ODI at an enervating Gabba. Defeat may be particularly ruinous for the visitors given an apparent hamstring tear to the captain Azhar Ali, who must now be in grave doubt for the rest of the tour.Azhar suffered the injury early in Pakistan’s ultimately doomed pursuit, and did it no favours when coming back out to bat at the fall of the sixth wicket. Brisbane’s hot and humid weather also claimed an Australian casualty, with the debutant Billy Stanlake appearing in some distress and unable to add to his initial three overs.Fortunately for Australia’s captain Steven Smith, he had plenty of other bowling options to call upon, including the exceptionally-tidy Travis Head. Regular wickets down the order to James Faulkner, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins meant Pakistan were always short of what was required. Azhar’s injury will create a leadership conundrum for the tourists, as the vice-captain Sarfraz Ahmed has returned home for personal reasons. The day had begun more promisingly for Pakistan. Unbalanced by Mohammad Amir’s dismissal of David Warner and Smith in consecutive balls, the newly-promoted Head and Chris Lynn were unable to go beyond cameos. Glenn Maxwell played sensibly for his 60 but Wade was left to accompany the tail through the later overs to notch his highest ODI score and third international century to ensure a decent target on a pitch that played a little more trickily than appearances suggested. That impression was strengthened when Pakistan batted, as a series of mistimed strokes prevented the pursuit from developing any momentum. After the long break forced by Azhar’s injury, Sharjeel Khan shelled Faulkner to mid-on, before Mohammad Hafeez followed a delivery going across him and was well held by Wade.An offcutter bouncer from Mitchell Starc accounted for Umar Akmal, and a swifter delivery from Pat Cummins was guided unerringly into the hands of Smith at slip by Babar Azam. Mohammad Rizwan was held on the juggle by Marsh, and Mohammad Nawaz bowled by a hint of inswing from Starc before Azhar’s vain effort to revive the innings.Azhar Ali’s hamstring tear sucked all the momentum from Pakistan’s chase•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

The hosts had included two debutants in Lynn and the tall Stanlake, while Head moved up to open alongside Warner instead of the jettisoned Aaron Finch. Pakistan were unable to consider an ill Shoaib Malik, meaning the inclusion of two spinning allrounders in Imad Wasim and also Mohammad Nawaz.Azhar called upon Hafeez to bowl the second over of the innings after his return from remedial work on his bowling action, and the gambit contributed to a subdued start by Warner and Head. Amir was duly permitted to calibrate his radar, and responded with the sweetest of late outswingers to confound Warner, then a delivery angled nicely across Smith for a first-ball edge behind.Lynn, appearing at the scene of so many BBL feats for the Brisbane Heat, was able to connect with one powerful blow over straight midwicket, but fell victim to a presumptuous heave at a Hasan Ali slower ball to sky a catch. Head peppered the cover boundary off both front and back foot, but was less successful when he tried to drive Imad Wasim and was well held by Mohammad Rizwan behind the stumps.Rizwan claimed another fine catch to account for a hesitant Marsh, and Wade arrived at the wicket without a half century in any format since October. Initially he played in Maxwell’s considerable slipstream, the allrounder contributing well on his return to the XI, but after he also offered a high catch from a miscue and then Faulkner snicked to slip, Wade took control.Fighting fatigue, he added 42 with Cummins, 23 with Starc and a hectic unbroken 33 with last man Stanlake to give Australia’s bowlers a chance under lights. Wade’s desire to get every last run was summed up when he turned little more than half a run into two with madcap running between the wickets to ensure he was on strike to reach a richly deserved three figures from the final ball of the innings.Wade then proved his durability by keeping soundly throughout Pakistan’s failed chase, despite the heat; not just the Man of the Match, the iron man too.

Liverpool Tracking £15m Gem Who Has "No Limit"

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is currently monitoring teenage sensation Arda Guler ahead of making a potential move for the youngster during the summer transfer window.

What’s the latest on Arda Guler to Liverpool?

According to Spanish outlet AS, Liverpool are believed to be tracking the Fenerbahce youngster alongside European heavyweights such as AC Milan, Benfica and Real Madrid as Klopp looks to bolster his midfield options ahead of next season.

His contract includes a release clause of just €17.5m (£15m) and this could represent a wonderful bargain for the Anfield side should they go ahead and trigger it.

How good is Arda Guler?

At just 18 years of age, the teen gem has already won the Turkish Cup, shining in the final against Istanbul Basaksehir, registering an assist in the eventual 2-0 victory, marking the climax of a stunning breakthrough season in style.

He averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.48/10 across 20 matches in the Super Lig, registering seven goal contributions – four goals and three assists – while showcasing his creative abilities by generating seven big chances and making two key passes per game, taking to senior football with apparent ease.

Indeed, his influence in the team was key to their success as he ranked first for overall rating and key passes per game, second for big chances created and third for successful dribbles per game across the squad, displaying an excellent maturity for someone so young.

With Klopp surely keen on adding more talent to his midfield following the departures of Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner, Guler could become one of Europe’s brightest stars.

Another quality that could attract the German to Guler is his versatility, as the Fenerbahce ace can operate either as an attacking midfielder or right-winger, while also dropping slightly deeper if required, giving Klopp plenty of options should he sign him.

The “serious talent” – as lauded by Duncan Castles – has even garnered international recognition, already winning four caps for Turkey while even scoring his maiden goal for his country against Wales in their recent European Championship qualifier.

The Anfield side should be doing everything they can to lure the prospect to Liverpool, as according to Italian legend Andrea Pirlo, he has “no limit” and is someone who could “play anywhere in the world”, such is his potential.

For a fee of just £15m, he could indeed become a ‘serious talent’ for Klopp over the next few seasons.

Powell's maiden ton makes it two in two for Leewards

Kieran Powell’s century took Leeward Islands to their second win, while Trinidad & Tobago skirted past Windward Islands by two wickets

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jan-2017Leeward Islands captain Kieran Powell struck his maiden List A century, finishing with 105 off 122 balls to lead his side past West Indies U-19 by 88 runs at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The achievement for Powell comes in his first full season back on the West Indies domestic circuit following a failed attempt to transition to baseball.Powell’s previous List A best in 55 matches prior to Friday was a score of 83, but his century anchored Leewards against the West Indies junior side as they finished 245 all out after being sent in. Wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton was the next best contribution with 28 at No. 5 and he teamed with Powell for the best stand of the innings, 65 runs for the fourth wicket. But when he and Powell fell, it triggered a collapse with the last six wickets going for 44 runs. Keemo Paul dismissed Powell and added three more wickets to finish with 4 for 42.In reply, West Indies U-19 were bowled out for 157 as Nkrumah Bonner took 3 for 30 to lead the way for Leewards in the field. Four batsmen were dismissed without scoring in the innings as West Indies U-19 struggled to mount a challenge though Shamar Springer top scored with 54 off 67 balls. In the late match at Coolidge, Trinidad & Tobago scraped past Windward Islands by two wickets. Windwards posted a stiff total of 266 for 7 with Darren Sammy providing a boost late by hitting an unbeaten 60 off 36 balls. Sunil Ambris had earlier struck his second straight half-century for Windwards by top scoring with 69 while Ravi Rampaul took 4 for 43 with the ball for Trinidad & Tobago.Evin Lewis got the chase off to a terrific start, striking a half-century off just 32 balls as Trinidad & Tobago raced through the Powerplay before Lewis fell for 64 in the 11th to end a 94-run opening partnership with Kyle Hope. Jason Mohammed entered soon after at No. 4 and steered the chase almost through to the end, making 80 until he was the sixth wicket to fall, edging Kyle Mayers behind to Ambris at the start of the 45th over with 22 needed to win. Mayers and Ambris teamed up for two more wickets to put Trinidad & Tobago on edge but Roshon Primus hit the winning runs with two overs to spare.

Spurs: Levy set to hold talks over "outstanding" star

Tottenham Hotspur are set to hold talks with Barcelona "in the next few days", with a view to signing Clement Lenglet on a permanent deal, according to journalist Rudy Galetti.

Is Clement Lenglet signing for Tottenham?

Daniel Levy appears to be closing in on a rather exciting signing in the form of James Maddison after successful talks, but that's not all that's going on as Spurs look to strengthen in another area this summer.

Tottenham have been negotiating a deal for Lenglet for quite some time now, with Barcelona recently proposing a swap deal including Giovani Lo Celso, who is not viewed as an "essential" player at N17.

However, Spurs were reportedly not keen on a deal of that nature, and they have instead come to the table with a bid of around €5m (£4.3m), with Barca hoping to have the transfer wrapped up by June 30th.

Not only are the La Liga club keen to conclude negotiations, the Lilywhites are also hoping for progress to be made in the near future, or they may end up moving on to other targets.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Galetti confirmed Tottenham may consider alternative options at centre-back, should the upcoming discussions not prove to be worthwhile, saying:

"The talks will also continue in the next few days, even if Tottenham Hotspur have no intention of holding long negotiation as they do have other possible names on their list of centre-backs."

Should Tottenham sign Lenglet?

The Frenchman had a mixed season on loan last season, having been hailed as "outstanding" by members of the media early on in the campaign, after making three clearances and blocking one shot in a 2-1 victory against Fulham.

As the season went on, however, the 28-year-old did put in some very poor performances, receiving a 4.6 match rating in the 4-2 loss against Manchester City in January, after making an error that led to a goal.

That said, the former Sevilla man is a vastly experienced player at the top level, making a total of 50 appearances in the Champions League, while he has also received 15 caps for France.

If Spurs are able to sign Lenglet for a fee of just £4.3m, then he could be a solid addition to the squad, at least as a back-up option, however they should not be held to ransom by Barca if they demand a higher fee.

There are plenty of alternative options available, including Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo, who may also be available for a cut-price fee this summer, having recently made it clear he wants to leave, while Edmond Tapsoba at the "top of the list" of targets.

Everton Set To Keep "Outstanding" £15m Youngster

Everton are unlikely to sell their young defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the summer, claims journalist Paul Brown.

Another year of fighting relegation and the departure of several high-profile players mean selling the £15m-rated man "wouldn't make a lot of sense."

Everton transfer news – What's the latest on Jarrad Branthwaite?

Everton will offer Jarrad Branthwaite a new deal.

A productive loan spell with Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven has led to increased interest in Everton's promising centre-half, but following the departure of Yerry Mina and the decision not to renew Conor Coady's loan deal, a sale by the club looks unlikely.

That hasn't stopped clubs from trying to prise the player away from Goodison Park, however, as PSV first offered £15m for the player in the January transfer window, an offer that the club swiftly turned down.

West Ham United are also keen on the player, with Football Insider reporting that the east London club have 'launched an enquiry' for the player as they look to bolster their squad for their upcoming Europa League campaign.

The Daily Mail have also reported that Jose Mourhinho's Roma are interested in the 6 foot 5 star as they could be set to lose Roger Ibanez in the summer.

What has Paul Brown said about Jarrad Branthwaite and Everton?

Brown explained that a mix of the player's quality and Everton's precarious financial situation make a sale of Branthwaite unlikely.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: "It wouldn't make a lot of sense really for Everton to let him go in the situation that they're in. I think it would be difficult to let too many players in the squad go that they might need to use next season because it's going to be a difficult window for them with very little money to replace.

"I don't think Branthwaite is someone who is likely to leave the club personally."

How good was Jarrad Branthwaite for PSV Eindhoven last season?

Soccer Football – Europa League – Play-Off First Leg – Sevilla v PSV Eindhoven – Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Seville, Spain – February 16, 2023 PSV Eindhoven’s Jarrad Branthwaite in action with Sevilla’s Erik Lamela REUTERS/Marcelo Del Pozo

Perhaps the clearest sign that his spell in the Netherlands was a big success is the fact that the Dutch runners-up were keen to make the move permanent only halfway through the loan.

According to WhoScored, the England youth international achieved an average rating of 6.8 across his 27 matches last season, scoring two goals and assisting one more.

His performances seemed to impress journalist Marco Timmer, who said:

"Physically, he's really impressive. He's two-footed, quick, is good in the air and defends well."

He expects big things for the player, adding:

"You could see his potential."

Former Everton U23 coach David Unsworth certainly seemed to think so when he hailed the Carlise-born gem as "outstanding" following a particularly impressive performance for the junior side.

His underlying stats were equally impressive. According to FBref, he averaged a pass completion rate of 86.9% last season, with 3.62 of those being progressive passes.

On the defensive side of things, he made 1.04 tackles, 1.64 interceptions, and 4.34 clearances, all per 90.

If Everton are to avoid being drawn into a third successive relegation battle next year, it could be thanks to the promising Branthwaite.

Leeds United £70k p/w Star Set To Play Big Part Next Season

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford will be a 'leading man next season' in attack as the Whites look to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest news involving Patrick Bamford?

In 2022/23, Bamford endured a difficult campaign for Leeds United as they suffered relegation to the Sky Bet Championship. Across 31 appearances in all competitions, the 29-year-old netted six goals and laid on four assists in total, as per Transfermarkt.

talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan slated the £70k-a-week ace for his performances during the campaign in an interview quoted by TEAMtalk, stating: “Patrick Bamford at times this season, I thought was diabolical. Poor, not just penalty misses but in games where he didn’t hold the line up, he didn’t do his job. I don’t know whether new contracts have affected his outcome because he got a new contract.”

Of course, the penalty miss that Jordan alluded to occurred last month in Leeds United's 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on matchday 36 of the Premier League season, where he fluffed the chance to put the Whites 2-0 up in a must-win match in their eventually doomed fight for survival, as per BBC Sport.

One report in Spain claimed in April that Bamford has offers on the table this summer from unnamed clubs; however, it remains to be seen whether that situation will have changed due to Leeds United dropping into England's second tier.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones thinks that Bamford will still be at Leeds United next season and will spearhead their attack in the Sky Bet Championship.

Jones told FFC: "I think Bamford will score goals in the Championship anyway. I think that's a level that he thrives at and whichever manager that comes into Leeds, I would expect Bamford to be the leading man next season and expect him to score goals. I think that's probably one of the good things that their next manager would look at is that in that division, particularly, they do have a good goal source."

Can Patrick Bamford be relied upon in the Sky Bet Championship for Leeds United?

Going by his previous history, there is no doubt that Bamford can be a potent marksman in the Sky Bet Championship as Leeds United look to get themselves back into the top flight.

His career record in the English second-tier stands up to scrutiny, as he has notched 61 goals and 15 assists in 167 appearances in total, as per Transfermarkt.

Leeds United'sPatrickBamfordfails to score from the penalty spot

This season, despite not being a successful one on a personal or collective level for Bamford or Leeds United, still proved that the 29-year-old carries a cunning goal threat, as he averaged around 1.8 shots per match in the Premier League, according to WhoScored.

Nevertheless, FBRef detail that in the same competition, Bamford only managed to get around 33.3% of his shots on target, suggesting room for improvement.

Moving forward, Bamford may be returning to a level he knows he can deliver at, which can only be a good thing for Leeds United.

Injured Ngidi out of New Zealand ODIs

Twenty-year old quick Lungi Ngidi has not recovered from the hip injury he sustained during the third T20 against Sri Lanka in Cape Town two weeks ago and will not travel with South Africa’s limited-overs squad to New Zealand. David Miller, who is sitting out the rest of the ongoing series against Sri Lanka after he required stitches to his hand, has recovered and will travel with 14-man group to play one T20 and five ODIs, starting next Friday. The only addition to the outfit that leads Sri Lanka 4-0 with a game to play is that of Cobras’ bowler Dane Paterson, who will travel as cover for Dwaine Pretorius who is awaiting the birth of his first child. Paterson was capped for a T20 against Sri Lanka but has yet to make his ODI debut. He will travel with the squad from Saturday and is expected to remain with them for the lone T20 and the first ODI. He will return home once baby Pretorius arrives and Dwaine is available to travel.”We, as selectors are very happy with the way the squad has gelled over the past 6 months and consistency in selection is very important as we continue our build-up towards the ICC Champions Trophy tournament,” Linda Zondi, South Africa’s convener of selectors said. The lack of changes to the South African squad comes after they won two successive series at home – 5-0 against Australia and the victory over Sri Lanka which may yet become a whitewash – and suggests South Africa have largely settled on their Champions Trophy squad. After the New Zealand series, they will play three ODIs in England in May in preparation for the tournament and if they were going to trial any different combinations, they would have used their time in New Zealand to do so.With Paterson only included as a short-term replacement, though, there may yet be a spot for Ngidi, who will likely play in the domestic one-day cup when he regains fitness. South Africa have yet to decide who will take the new ball and have experimented between Kagiso Rabada, Wayne Parnell and Pretorius.South Africa will expect New Zealand to present a sterner challenge than Sri Lanka, especially since they recently beat Australia in an ODI series, but will also place an emphasis on conditions which could be similar to England’s early season. If South Africa beat Sri Lanka in the final ODI on Friday, they will travel there as the No.1 ranked ODI side. New Zealand are in third place.South Africa squad: AB de Villiers (capt), Faf du Plessis, Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock (wk), JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, David Miller, Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell, Dane Paterson, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi

Queensland set Tasmania 352 for victory

Queensland’s stand-in captain, Chris Hartley, set Tasmania a hefty target of 352 for victory on the third day at the Gabba, after he earlier broke the all-time record for Sheffield Shield wicketkeeping dismissals. At stumps, the Tigers had survived five overs without damage and were 0 for 10, with Jake Hancock on 5 and Jordan Silk yet to score. The day began with the Tigers on 4 for 113 in their first innings, but the dismissal of captain George Bailey for 55 to Mark Steketee (3 for 73) allowed Queensland a look at the Tasmania lower order. However, it was an unexpected bowler who claimed the next wicket – bowling offspin, Joe Burns picked up his maiden first-class wicket when he had Jake Doran caught at short leg. Then came Hartley’s record-breaking catch, when he gloved Simon Milenko’s edge off the bowling of Michael Neser. It took Hartley clear of Darren Berry’s record of 546 Sheffield Shield dismissals, and into the outright lead. Tasmania were all out for 200, and Queensland added 6 for 146 in reply before declaring to set the Tigers a target.

Everton Plotting Move For "Unplayable" Talent At Goodison

Everton are in desperate need of reinforcements to their attacking threat this summer and now a new update has emerged on a potential transfer target that could finally replace Richarlison.

What's the latest on Everton's interest in Crysencio Summerville?

According to iNews' Northern correspondent Mark Douglas, Everton remain keen on signing Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville.

As per an article written for the publication, Douglas claims that the Toffees are interested in both Summerville and his teammate Wilfried Gnonto this summer due to growing interest in Demarai Gray, which could further weaken their forward line.

The journalist adds further that whilst Summerville is a target worth chasing, Gnonto is unlikely to be allowed to leave his recently relegated club as Leeds plot to compete well in the Championship next season.

Would Summerville be a good signing for Everton?

Sean Dyche's top priority this summer will be to add quality to the forward line after a struggle in the Premier League relegation battle last season that was mainly caused by the lack of goal contributions from the team.

Only Wolverhampton Wanderers (31) scored fewer goals than the Merseysiders (34) over the 38-game campaign, which ultimately led to them hanging on by a thread to their top-flight status for another season.

As a result, the signing of Summerville – who could cost £10m – would be a valuable asset to Dyche next season and could significantly improve the presence in front of goal if he can continue to develop and polish his skills at Goodison Park.

It is no secret that Everton have been down on their luck when it comes to the final third with both Richarlison and Anthony Gordon making an exit in the last 12 months, whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been in and out of the team with constant long-term injury issues.

Now the former Burnley boss can rectify the issue by taking full advantage of the summer transfer window to bring in attacking-minded players who can make a genuine impact and be trusted to deliver when needed.

Summerville could well be the perfect replacement for Richarlison judging by his dazzling quality.

That said, he was only handed 12 Premier League starts last season but offered four goals, two assists and two big chances created despite only averaging 51 minutes per game, demonstrating a keen eye for goal.

summerville-leeds-premier-league-everton-transfers

The 21-year-old ace – dubbed "unplayable" by journalist Beren Cross – ranked third for successful dribbles per 90 and was the fourth-highest scoring player in the Leeds squad which is impressive considering his limited game-time at Elland Road, as per WhoScored.

Not only that, Summerville actually outperformed his positional peer and former Toffees talisman Richarlison with his offensive output last season.

The Brazilian only tallied up one league goal, fewer dribbles per 90 (0.4) and the same amount of key passes per 90 (0.6).

With that being said, Dyche could unearth Everton's next Richarlison if they can secure a deal for the talented Leeds youngster this summer and could provide the team with a strong threat to compete comfortably against their Premier League opponents next season.
