Liverpool In Pole Position For £40m Midfield "Monster"

Liverpool and Chelsea are now in pole position to sign Southampton midfielder and Arsenal target Romeo Lavia this summer, according to reports.

Is Romeo Lavia leaving Southampton?

The Belgium international only arrived at St. Mary’s from Premier League rivals Manchester City last summer, but during the 34 appearances he made during his debut season, he was one of the standout stars in a struggling side that eventually suffered relegation to the Championship.

The Saints’ 19-year-old established himself as Ruben Selles’ former side’s second top-performing defensive player which is impressive considering he’s still a teenager, so despite the fact that his contract doesn’t expire for another four years, he’s caught the eye of several managers in the top-flight, including Jurgen Klopp.

Fabrizio Romano recently reported that the Reds and Arsenal have both “asked [for] conditions” of a potential deal for the south coast outfit’s talented prospect, whilst Manchester United and Chelsea are only “monitoring” him and have held no "active talks” at this stage.

Are Liverpool signing Lavia?

According to Football Transfers, Liverpool and Chelsea have “overtaken” Arsenal in the hot pursuit of Lavia ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The Gunners are claimed to have been favourites due to Mikel Arteta’s personal admiration for the player, but he could now “risk losing out” due to focusing all of his attention on the deal for West Ham’s Declan Rice. Lavia had been picked out as a replacment for Thomas Partey.

Southampton have placed a £40m price tag on their prized asset’s head, and with one of the initial frontrunners having put a swoop on the backburner, the Reds are in a “better” position to secure his services.

Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

FSG will likely believe that Southampton demanding £40m for Lavia is extortionate considering that they were able to secure Alexis Mac Allister for £35m, but the defensive midfielder has got the potential to be a fantastic long-term signing so an opening offer should definitely be considered to test the waters.

The Elite Project Group client, who’s sponsored by Adidas, last season ranked in the 96th percentile for blocks by midfielders and won 35 out of his 60 tackles, which was the second-highest success rate throughout his squad, as per FBRef, so he’s not afraid to get stuck in when it comes to challenges.

Southampton’s “monster”, as dubbed by journalist Benjy Nurick, also has the ability to operate slightly higher up in central midfield alongside his usual role sitting just in front of the backline, so he would provide the boss with a little bit of extra versatility, making him an option to seriously think about should the opportunity to strike a deal present itself.

Aston Villa Could Sign a £25m ‘Machine’ At Villa Park

Aston Villa have been scanning the resources of newly relegated clubs, with Youri Tielemans already in the bag from Leicester City.

The Midlands side have opted to recruit Monchi as president of football operations to team up with Unai Emery to prepare for a busy summer in the transfer window.

The latest star linked could bolster the Spaniard’s squad in a player that excelled in the Premier League last term.

What’s the latest on Tyler Adams to Aston Villa?

As reported by the Daily Mail earlier this week, Aston Villa have emerged as one of the clubs chasing Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.

The report names Villa along with Brighton, Everton and Nottingham Forest as the clubs that have ‘enquired’ for the 24-year-old, who is likely to depart following The Whites’ relegation.

It’s stated that Leeds value the American at £25m, with him contracted to Elland Road until 2027.

What could Tyler Adams offer to Aston Villa?

Trading the Bundesliga for the Premier League last summer, Adams departed RB Leipzig in the hope to make a name for himself in England.

While the 24-year-old cemented himself as a key performer in the side, supported by him ranking as their second-best performer via Sofascore, the United States international could not save his club from demotion to the Championship.

Operating as a defensive midfielder for Leeds, the New York-born gem has earned his plaudits for being a “machine”, as dubbed by journalist Wes Rucker, winning 57% of his total duels this season.

As per Sofascore, Adams won six total duels per game in 24 Premier League appearances this term, making a monstrous 3.7 tackles and 1.5 interceptions to support the reason why clubs are swarming at his potential availability.

For Villa, the midfield commander could equip Emery’s side with significant depth and particularly challenge those deployed in the engine room.

Douglas Luiz, Boubacar Kamara and John McGinn have stepped up to the task in rotation in midfield at Villa Park this campaign, and the introduction of the American could spice up the competition in that area.

Kamara, who was signed by the Villans from Marseille last summer could be taken to the next level by having a duel with the Leeds star for a starting spot in the squad.

In his introduction season to the Premier League, the Frenchman missed a significant number of games due to injury with the 2023/24 campaign providing an opening to fully assert himself at Villa Park.

As highlighted by Sofascore statistics, the 23-year-old has similar strengths to Adams, however, the numbers present a case for who would be a stronger starter in Emery’s side, with the American performing at a higher average per game.

Having both made 24 appearances, Kamara fell short of the former Bundesliga ace in terms of tackles and interceptions per game, averaging 2.4 and 0.8 respectively for those metrics.

While the debate of who takes the starting role in the engine room bears a potential headache for Emery, adding quality to the side can only better the club in providing depth ready to prepare for a season with the inclusion of European football.

Rangers Set To Lose Out On Transfer For 20-Year-Old Winger

Rangers may not be bringing in Benie Traore this transfer window, with journalist Jonny McFarlane, via Ibrox News, reporting that a deal for the player could be expensive and that he isn't high up on their priority list as a result.

Who is Benie Traore?

The 20-year-old winger currently plies his trade in Sweden for Hacken and has made quite the impression already for the side despite his age. In the 2022/23 season, he bagged a total of 12 goals with two assists along the way.

That record is made even more superb when you consider that the youngster played in only 13 league outings for his side – meaning he averaged 1.10 goals or assists per 90 minutes played.

Whilst he is yet to be called up to his senior national team, his performances have led to him getting his debut for their Under-23 side. He represents the Ivory Coast when it comes to international football and they finally allowed him to star for them in March of this year – showing that his hard work on the field for Hacken is now paying off. It wouldn't be a surprise to soon see him line up for their first-team.

Are Rangers signing Benie Traore?

It's these showings that have since led to interest in his services from Rangers. However, a fresh report from journalist Jonny McFarlane, via Ibrox News, will not be news that Gers fans want to hear.

He states that the Scottish Premiership side do not have a deal for Traore as high up on their priority list as he could be "very expensive" if they were to push forward with a bid for the player – Alan Nixon reports there has already been one effort turned down, though it's not clear which side of Glasgow it came from.

McFarlane finished by saying that fans shouldn't "expect to see Benie Traore at Ibrox any time soon". Celtic could now be in the clear to sign him, with the Hoops also believed to be keeping tabs on the forward.

He said: "Yes there is interest [from Celtic as well] but Rangers see that as one that’ll be very far down the list. He will also be very expensive, based on what I’ve been told by people at the club."

It would be a shame for Rangers to not bring in a player such as Traore, who has already shone to those who have watched him. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig called him Hacken's "jewel" and added that he is another "highly-talented" player that the club have created.

It suggests that there is plenty of talent in his boots – but he may not get the opportunity to show it or to continue to try and fulfil his potential in Scotland with the Gers.

Bungled Marsh review sets path to defeat

A decision not to use DRS when Shaun Marsh was given lbw while padding up to Umesh Yadav contributed to Australia’s 75-run defeat in Bengaluru

Daniel Brettig07-Mar-2017A disastrous DRS misunderstanding between Australia’s captain Steven Smith and the No. 4 batsman Shaun Marsh helped set them on the path to defeat in Bengaluru, one that allowed India back into a bare-knuckle fight for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Twice Smith appeared to have established useful stands in pursuit of a target of 188 for victory and an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series, first with David Warner and then with Marsh. Warner was lbw to R Ashwin while attempting to sweep, and on review was found to be have been struck in line with the stumps by the barest possible margin, therefore upholding the decision. That left Australia with a solitary review when Marsh shouldered arms to Umesh Yadav’s delivery from around the wicket and was hit on the pads in the vicinity of the off stump. After Nigel Llong raised his finger in response to the appeal, the two batsmen got together to chat about using DRS.”We weren’t entirely sure,” Smith said. “I sort of said “go” as in “go have a look at it” and he sort of turned around and started walking, so I should’ve probably put my hands up and done it.”HawkEye showed the ball wouldn’t hit the wicket and Smith admitted it had been an unfortunate way to lose a batsman who had been in good form. “Obviously we saw the replay and it was missing the stumps so it would’ve been a nice one to review,” he said. “It perhaps could have been important. Shaun was looking pretty good. It was a disappointing wicket at the time, but that’s the game of cricket, you have to move on and try and do what you can from there.”Marsh’s dismissal left Australia with only two specialist batsmen in Smith and Peter Handscomb. After they were separated by the captain’s subsequent lbw, the end came quickly, exposing the limitations of Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Wade and the tail on a fiendishly difficult pitch and handing the match to India by a more comfortable margin than what seemed likely for most of a very memorable Test.”On a day four wicket that’s pretty challenging, you need a few things to go your way, you need a bit of luck and today wasn’t our day,” Smith said. “We competed very hard, this morning we bowled well and got the breakthroughs we needed to and got ourselves batting, but 188 was always going to be a difficult task. We probably just needed one or two batsmen to stand up a little bit more and try to get us close to that score.”In assessing where the visitors lost the thread of a contest they had begun in fine style on day one after losing the toss, Smith pointed to shortcomings in their bowling in the second innings. Rather than being patient – a quality they showed in spades throughout the first day in Bengaluru and throughout the first Test in Pune – Smith conceded his men had rushed a bit. By the time they regained the right tempo, India’s lead was past 150.”I think when we came out and bowled we were probably rushing a little bit, almost expecting things to happen instead of getting to the basics and executing our skills,” Smith said. “We were a little bit off with our lines and lengths, gave them a few too many freebies in the first innings as well.”On this wicket, it was about maintaining your line and length and letting the wicket do the work. There was a lot of natural variation in this game and at times we got a bit too wide or a bit too full and we weren’t able to continually hit those areas we were able to hit and that relieved the pressure [off India] a little bit.”What we did this morning was what we needed to do yesterday, and if we did that, things could certainly be different. But credit to the way the guys came out and did it today, 188 was always going to be a difficult task. Ashwin went to work on a wicket that was certainly suiting him and their quicks bowled in some very challenging areas.”Australia must now overcome the mental hurdle of losing a match they had made much of the running in. “It’s disappointing but I’m still proud of the way the boys competed,” Smith said. “When we came over here we were written off and expected to lose 4-0 but the boys have competed incredibly hard over the last two Test matches, so if we can continue to do that then hopefully we can get some more results go our way.”

Celtic Could Unlock Turnbull With’Elite’ £75k-p/w Signing

Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers has been thrust straight into the job in the middle of a summer transfer window and will need to get his feet under his desk as quickly as possible.

The 2023/24 campaign is on the horizon and teams are already starting to bolster their squads with new signings to achieve their goals next term.

Ange Postecoglou departed the Scottish giants earlier this month to join Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and the distraction of looking for a new boss may be the reason that the club are yet to make their first addition of the window.

The Daily Mail recently reported that the 50-year-old manager is now hoping to tempt Wilfred Ndidi to quit the King Power to link up with him again in Scotland, although it remains to be seen how viable a deal is for the Nigerian.

How would Wilfried Ndidi fit in at Celtic?

Postecoglou did not line up with an out-and-out defensive midfielder last term and Rodgers bringing the Leicester anchor to Parkhead could allow attacking midfielder David Turnbull to finally thrive.

No Celtic midfielder made more than 2.2 tackles and interceptions per Scottish Premiership game in the Australian chief's 4-3-3 system in 22/23 and the lack of a natural number six may have played a part in Turnbull's lack of minutes.

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull.

The 24-year-old only started six league matches for the Hoops but Rodgers' 4-2-3-1 formation could provide the Scotland international with an opportunity to strut his stuff if Ndidi comes in to provide the required defensive protection in one of the two deep-lying roles.

Leicester's midfield general was once described as an "elite player" by journalist John Bennett and the £75k-per-week gem's statistics back that up.

He ranks in the top 1% of players in his position in the Men's Big Five Leagues over the last 365 days for interceptions and clearances per 90, whilst he is also in the top 5% for tackles and top 11% for blocks, which included him making 5.31 tackles and interceptions per 90.

This suggests that Ndidi has been one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe over the past year when it comes to cutting out opposition attacks and putting his body on the line for the team.

His ball-winning ability could allow Turnbull to thrive in the number ten role without having to worry about tracking back and exerting all of his effort in transitions.

Prior to Postecoglou's arrival, the Scottish wizard averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.47 across 36 Premiership outings in 20/21 and contributed with nine goals and 12 'big chances' created.

No Celtic player achieved an average rating higher than 7.45 in 22/23 and Turnbull's 2.9 key passes per match in 20/21 is more impressive than the club-high 2.1 chances created per game that Matt O'Riley managed last term.

Therefore, signing Ndidi, who was once lauded as a "monster" by journalist Colin Udoh, could improve the team defensively and offensively, with his efforts off the ball allowing Turnbull to be unlocked as a creative threat in possession.

Nerveless Nawaz puts Quetta in PSL final

In a repeat of last year’s knockout match, Quetta Gladiators beat Peshawar Zalmi by one run to make their second successive PSL final

The Report by Danyal Rasool28-Feb-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details3:45

Highlights – Gladiators grab unlikely victory

In a nutshell
This was nothing like Quetta Gladiators’ one-run win over Peshawar Zalmi at the same stage last year. Boundaries flowed seemingly on demand, and ten an over was par for the course. And yet what was the result? Quetta beat Peshawar by one run to qualify for the PSL final on March 5 in Lahore. The scale of run-scoring and power of ball-striking was on a different level to what had been seen in their clash last year, but there was always a hint of déjà vu. After an early blip, Peshawar took control of a chase of 201 with Mohammad Hafeez and Dawid Malan putting on one of the partnerships of the tournament. Their 139 runs from 72 balls wrenched the momentum back from Quetta, whose bowlers were hamstrung by the heavy dew on the Sharjah outfield. When Shahid Afridi arrived, and looked in his absolute six-hitting best, the target was brought to almost a run a ball. The wheels turned, however, with his dismissal. With Peshawar needing seven off six, left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz, who had gone for 46 in his first three overs, triggered three wickets to fall in the last three balls to seal the game.Quetta had done most of their damage with the bat in the first 10 overs. Ahmed Shehzad and Kevin Pietersen ransacked 90 runs in only 42 balls for the second wicket to take the score to 121 for 1, prompting Peshawar to take a time out. Darren Sammy rallied his troops and they responded beautifully, with only two boundaries coming off the next eight overs. However, Quetta had gained such a sizeable advantage in terms of run-rate in the first half of the innings that they still made 200 with simple rotation of strike and some streaky fours in the end.Where the match was won
After a couple of games where Quetta appeared too timid to take charge of the big moments, their aggressive intent from ball one was a pleasant change. With one of the best in this regard, Viv Richards, watching from their corner, Shehzad and Luke Wright set up a rapid start, and when Pietersen came to the crease, Quetta surged into top gear, showcasing some of the cleanest hitting of the PSL this year. Seventy-seven runs were scored between the fifth and tenth overs and however well Peshawar did to pull them back after that, Sarfraz’s men had given themselves enough of a cushion.File photo: Ahmed Shehzad made 71 off a mere 38 balls•Chris Whiteoak

The men that won it
Nawaz’s figures today might be some of the more forgettable ones of his career, but what 4-0-51-3 doesn’t reveal is his work in the final over. He was having a bad night but against all logic Sarfraz trusted him to bowl under the highest pressure. Sammy, one of the fiercest strikers in T20 cricket, was on strike. The ball was so soaked with dew that it was hard to grip.Yet the 22-year old left-arm spinner managed to hit his lengths more often than not and, by refusing to let the batsman get leverage to hit him over those inviting short boundaries in Sharjah, pulled off a memorable heist. Nawaz also held on to a steepling catch in the 19th over to dismiss Afridi for 34 off 13 balls.Quetta were perhaps helped by Sammy’s refusing to take a single off the first ball of the over though his partner Chris Jordan is a decent lower-order batsman. Peshawar eventually lost by one run.Moment of the match
Riling Pietersen up when he has the bat in hand is not a very good move for a bowler and Wahab Riaz found that out on Tuesday. In the sixth over of the match, Wahab bumped into Pietersen while he was trying to sneak a single and then hit the batsman with a throw aimed at the non-strikers’ end. As if that wasn’t enough, he appealed to the umpire for an obstructing-the-field dismissal, which was turned down. Two balls later, Pietersen launched Wahab for a six that flew out of the stadium and landed on the side of the street outside the stadium.Where they stand
Quetta secure their place in the final of the PSL with this win. Peshawar will now have to beat either Karachi Kings or Islamabad United in the eliminator on Friday for a shot at the trophy.

Aston Villa Can Replace Young With Swoop For £165k-p/w Ace

An update has emerged on Aston Villa and their plans to bolster their defensive options ahead of the 2023/24 campaign…

What's the latest on Thomas Meunier to Aston Villa?

German outlet BILD have reported that the Villans are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Borussia Dortmund right-back Thomas Meunier in the summer transfer window.

It is claimed that Serie A giants AC Milan, Juventus, and Inter Milan are among the other teams pursuing a deal to snap up the Belgian international in the coming weeks.

BILD states that the Bundesliga outfit are willing to part ways with the full-back for a fee in the region of €3m (£2.6m) as he has one year left on his current contract and is not in the manager's plans for next season.

Would Thomas Meunier be a good signing for Aston Villa?

Meunier, who European football expert Zach Lowy dubbed a "big name" in the right-back market, could be an excellent addition to Unai Emery's squad as the experienced campaigner could be the dream heir to Ashley Young's position in the team.

The club confirmed in May that the former England international will be leaving upon the expiry of his contract at the end of June and that came as a blow to the head coach as the 37-year-old had started 23 Premier League matches last term.

Young averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.86 across 29 league appearances and contributed with 1.7 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 0.5 key passes per match for his side. Those statistics may not look too impressive but his rating placed him as the club's eighth-based player while only Matty Cash of defenders in the squad made more successful tackles per match.

It paints the picture that this is a valued member of the squad and as such, a quick replacement must be sourced. Villa could now land the perfect heir by bringing in Meunier to compete with Cash for the starting berth at right-back.

The Dortmund enforcer has made over 400 career club appearances and been capped 62 times by Belgium at international level, which illustrates the experience that he would be bringing to Villa Park.

Belgium defender Thomas Meunier.

Meunier only started seven league matches in 22/23 but did showcase his ability across 17 Bundesliga starts in the previous campaign.

Compared to Young, he averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.94 and caught the eye with 2.4 tackles and interceptions and 0.9 key passes per game, whilst the Belgian ace also created eight 'big chances' for his teammates. For context, that would put him on a par with Villa's best chance creator, Jacob Ramsey, who also supplied eight last term.

As such, it's evident that Meunier would make for an upgrade on what Young offered Villa last season in terms of his average performance level and creativity from right-back.

The veteran defender, who Dortmund sporting director Michael Zor claimed makes "few mistakes", also averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.05 or higher across all four of his seasons with Paris Saint-Germain earlier in his career.

These statistics suggest that the £165k-per-week gem could be the dream heir to Young's place in the squad as he is an experienced right-back who has a history of being able to produce excellent performances in multiple major European leagues when given regular game time.

Rangers: Beale Now Prepared To Let Star Leave

Rangers manager Michael Beale is personally prepared to let striker Antonio Colak leave this summer if a suitable offer comes in, according to journalist Derek McGregor.

Who is leaving Rangers this summer?

The Gers are currently overseeing a major summer overhaul with four confirmed signings already coming through the door in Jack Butland, Dujon Sterling, Kieran Dowell and Sam Lammers from Atalanta (Transfermarkt).

Rangers have been very busy so far this summer, despite the absence of a sporting director following the departure of Ross Wilson to Nottingham Forest earlier in the year.

Their flurry of incomings comes after many former squad members left Ibrox at the end of May, with Ryan Kent, Scott Arfield, Alfredo Morelos, Filip Helander and Allan McGregor departing Glasgow (Transfermarkt).

Attacking midfielder Marik Tillman, who was on loan from Bayern Munich last season, also returned to his parent club after Rangers opted not to pursue a permanent deal.

Beale is ever so slowly reshaping the squad in his own image with reports suggesting that other Rangers players could follow the aforementioned in leaving.

Glasgow Rangers boss Michael Beale.

According to reporter McGregor, writing for The Sun, the departures of both Morelos and Kent have handed Beale a chance to freshen up his attack and inject new quality.

This has lead to talks for both Cremonese forward Cyriel Dessers and Brighton's Abdallah Sima, though Rangers could make even more of an overhaul in the attacking areas.

Indeed, McGregor writes that Beale, despite Colak's goal haul last season, will personally green-light the Croatian's sale too, if a suitable offer arrives.

The journalist wrote:

"Croat Antonio Colak – who netted 18 goals in his Gers debut season – continues to interest a number of German clubs with Beale prepared to sanction a sale if the right offer comes in.

"The exits of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent have given the manager a big chance to freshen up his attack with Kemar Roofe and Fashion Sakala still available."

What's been said about Colak?

It will be interesting to see if Beale really is open to sanctioning Colak's sale, especially after his record in front of goal last season.

The Rangers boss even heaped praise on his attacker's enthusiasm, particularly raving over his "infectious" energy and involvement as a team player.

"He’s just got natural enthusiasm. He goes and presses and works for his teammates. He is part of the team," explained Beale.

"He has not been able to show me what he has because he got injured before I came in, and he has been playing bit parts here and there.

"He’s infectious in terms of his energy. The last few weeks, he has started to look really fit, and his personality has come out in the group. I am delighted for him.”
