Arsenal: Star "Made It Clear" He Wanted To Join

Galatasary forward Wilfried Zaha once "made it clear" he wanted to join Arsenal, according to journalist Charles Watts.

Who will Arsenal sign?

Mikel Arteta's side have displayed no shortage of ambition this transfer window, having already completed a trio of marquee deals for winger Kai Havertz, midfielder Declan Rice and versatile defender Jurrien Timber.

Havertz arrived first, completing a £65 million switch from London rivals Chelsea, while Rice came as their biggest outlay of the summer in a record-breaking £105 million move from West Ham.

"We’re really happy that Declan is joining us," said Arteta after his arrival.

"He is a player with tremendous ability, who has been performing at a high level in the Premier League and for England for a number of seasons now. Declan is bringing undoubted quality to the club and he is an exceptional talent who has the potential to be very successful here."

Timber's arrival from Ajax will also strengthen Arteta's defence to no end, with the Netherlands international boasting real versatility.

Zaha, who left Crystal Palace as a free agent at the start of the summer, had been linked with a move to Arsenal recently so some supporters may have expected a potential swoop for the Ivorian.

Alas, that didn't come to fruition and he instead joined up with Turkish Super Lig giants Galatasary. Speaking to TEAMtalk, Arsenal reporter Watts has shared just how close he came to joining the club back in 2019.

Wilfried Zaha comes off as Crystal Palace beat Leeds United in the Premier League.

During Unai Emery's tenure, he was a top transfer target, and he apparently "made it clear" he wanted a move to the Emirates Stadium at the time.

“I expected him to go to a different club rather than Galatasaray,” Watts told TEAMtalk.

“Interestingly, Francis Cagigao has just taken over as head of recruitment at Gala. He was at Arsenal for a long, long time. I wasn’t expecting Arsenal to do anything.

“Unai Emery really wanted him in the summer of 2019. And Arsenal signed Nicolas Pepe instead; they didn’t give Unai what he wanted. That obviously turned out to be a very bad decision.

“Zaha would have loved to come to Arsenal, he was always an Arsenal fan. He made it clear he wanted to come to Arsenal. And I’m sure he’s going to end his career pretty disappointed he never got to achieve that.

“Around that time, he probably felt there was a very good chance of that happening. Emery wanted him, he really wanted to push the board to sign him. But they went down another route.

“Once that happened, I never really expected Arsenal to rekindle that interest."

How good is Wilfried Zaha?

We believe the winger would have been a serious coup for Arsenal on a Bosman deal this year, especially considering his haul of 14 goals in 33 appearances for Palace last season (WhoScored).

Zaha also bettered every single one of his teammates in terms of attempts at goal, key passes made and successful take-ons per 90 in the final third over 2022/2023 (WhoScored).

The 30-year-old also attracted more fouls than any other Palace player, highlighting what a tricky player he can be to play against.

Aston Villa: Monchi Could Sign £26m "Real Deal" As McGinn Rival This Summer

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie as manager Unai Emery bids to bolster his side this summer.

The Spaniard has already added firepower to his midfield in the capture of Youri Tielemans, however, the latest news suggests that the spending is far from done at Villa Park.

Could Aston Villa sign Franck Kessie?

Reports from Spain back in February linked the Villans to Kessie, with interest reported to be dependent on his availability in the summer.

Fast-forward to now, and the Midlands outfit remain on the tail of the 26-year-old, who has also gained attention from Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus.

A report from Mundo Deportivo this week (as relayed by Sport Witness), named Villa as in the mix for the box-to-box midfielder, who is expected to bid farewell to Barcelona due to their need to make sales.

A separate Spanish report claimed that the Ivory Coast international could be sold for no less than €30m (£26m).

How good is Franck Kessie?

Having been lauded as the "real deal" by scout Antonio Mango, Kessie was snatched by Barcelona from AC Milan last summer but due to the club’s financial pressures, he could be on the move again this year.

After making 43 appearances across all competitions for the Catalan giants, the 26-year-old machine played a key part in the club’s success last season, making him a strong acquisition for Emery to chase.

At Villa Park, there’s a resounding buzz this window in Emery and Monchi’s work to secure the signings of star talent, with Tielemans, Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby arriving as three clear – and major – upgrades to the squad.

franck-kessie-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-premier-league

While the side that the Spaniard inherited from Steven Gerrard worked their way from the bottom half of the table dwellers to top-seven finishers, the former Arsenal boss has identified the need for further reinforcements to continue the progression.

In obtaining Kessie, Emery could add to the depth of his side, in a move that could see some figures already at Villa Park threatened to compete for game time.

Long-serving skipper John McGinn was revolutionised following the four-time Europa League winners' arrival, however, the Scotland international could see his talents challenged should the Ivorian powerhouse arrive.

Usually deployed in central midfield, the 26-year-old star would bring an assured presence to the engine room, as highlighted by his average pass completion rate of 85.6%, excelling that of McGinn who averaged a completion rate of 78.3% in the Premier League last term, via FBref.

While the Villa skipper has been handed a new-found energy in Emery’s free-roaming set-up, the quality of Kessie cannot be denied, with him once lauded as a “warrior” by scout Jacek Kulig.

In a more defensive role, the Barcelona titan averaged 1.09 interceptions per 90 in LaLiga last season, with McGinn registering a lower average of 0.80 per 90 in the Premier League, via FBref, highlighting just what the midfielder could bring to the Midlands.

Therefore, if Mochi can secure the signing of Kessie, then it could add serious depth to the middle of the park for Emery at Villa, as he'd bring a presence that could promote competition in the bid to raise performance, in a move clearly beneficial to all involved.

Lodha hand in BCCI's mega rights deals

Restricting the duration of high-value contracts to five years and being transparent in the tendering process has proved to be a fruitful exercise for the BCCI, which has raked in close to INR 20,000 crore (approx US $3.12 billion) across three mega deals sealed in the past six months – Monday’s record-breaking IPL rights deal included. That is the assessment of Rahul Johri, the BCCI’s chief executive officer, who agreed that the due-diligence process originally recommended by the Lodha Committee and now followed by the Committee of Administrators (CoA) has bred a healthy environment that has attracted bidders from across the globe to Indian cricket. In March, OPPO Mobiles India, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, won the Indian team sponsorship rights for a five-year period, starting April 1 2017, for INR 1079 crore (approx USD 162 million). In June, Vivo, another Chinese mobile manufacturer, retained the IPL title sponsorship rights paying INR 2199 crore (approx US $341 million) for a five-year deal. Along with Monday’s IPL rights deal, clinched by Star India for INR 16,347.50 crore (approx US $2.55 billion), that is a combined worth of INR 19,625.50 crore.”In business if you have accountability, transparency and stability, that translates into numbers. And that is what has happened,” Johri told ESPNcricinfo. “These three tenders have happened under the CoA’s watch.”In its final report, made public in January 2016, the Lodha Committee had pointed out that “no norms or procedures exist to select or engage contractors in a fair and transparent manner” when the BCCI signed new contracts, including television rights. The Supreme Court agreed and directed the BCCI to make sure all bids were passed through the due-diligence process done by lawyers and auditors before the bids were unveiled. On Monday, the technical bids of the 14 companies that decided to enter the IPL media-rights bidding process were passed through auditors from Deloitte and the law firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas.Another key change, which has proved influential, is reducing the bid duration from 10 years to five. The previous television rights deal was for 10 years, which ended in 2017. In July, the BCCI decided to set the duration for all the rights’ categories at five years.Speaking of this decision, Johri pointed out the enthusiasm in the digital-rights segment, where Facebook, Airtel and Reliance Jio each bid INR 3000-plus crore. “You saw the excitement in digital and who knows five years from now where digital will be… It absolutely justifies [reducing the rights term]. Companies plan for five years. I don’t know of many companies that plan for ten years. There is accuracy in those [five-year] plans. These are all board-level decision companies have to take. Even the bidders have accountability, they can’t just put up an arbitrary number. There are processes. So keeping it for five years works well.”Also, another advantage of keeping the rights cycle to five years, Johri pointed out, was “the sum of two five-year bids will definitely be bigger than one 10-year bid”.The IPL rights deal is now the most expensive in cricket, with Star India paying virtually INR 55 crore (approx US $8.47 million) per IPL match. Johri was not surprised at the money paid by Star India, which he said was a “viable” amount. The value of the digital rights, Johri said, was a clear indicator that there was “very high growth” in this market.

Spurs: Bayern Munich’s Latest Kane Offer Rejected

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has rejected another bid from Bayern Munich for Harry Kane, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein.

What's the latest Tottenham transfer news?

The Kane transfer saga has been going on for quite some time, with the striker reportedly agreeing terms on a move to Bayern way back at the end of June, however it does not appear as though he will force a move this summer.

Journalist Paul Brown believes he does not want to damage his reputation by pushing to leave, recently telling GiveMeSport:

"It doesn't look like he is going to agitate for a move. I think he remembers from before, when Manchester City came in, just how much of a backlash there was when it looked like he was trying to engineer that transfer. He then ended up having to come back and face the music.

"I don't think he's going to push like that again this summer, so it really comes down to how talks go between the clubs."

As such, Bayern may have to match Tottenham's huge demands for the striker if they are to sign him this summer, with recent reports indicating they have submitted an £86m "take ir ot leave it" bid, giving the Lilywhites until midnight on Friday to respond.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg took Twitter to dismiss reports of a set deadline, saying: "Poker is ongoing as there was never a deadline. There was only the wish of an answer this weekend."

The Athletic's Ornstein has now given his own development and revealed that answer – the bid has been rejected. Despite being improved on the previous two attempts it is still a fair bit of shy of the Lilywhites' demands.

Is Harry Kane leaving Tottenham?

Football Insider have previously reported that Spurs may be willing to accept an offer of £100m for their new captain, so the German champions may simply have to stump up the cash if they are to prise him away from the north London club.

An offer of that size would make the England international Tottenham's most expensive departure of all time, despite the fact he has just one year remaining on his contract, and he is unwilling to commit to a new deal.

Of course, it would be a huge blow for Spurs to lose their all-time top scorer, but it may be difficult to resist a bid of £100m, considering there is seemingly a very good chance he could leave for free next summer if they do not compete for silverware this season.

Ange Postecoglou has recently confirmed he is in "open dialogue" with the striker over his future, also adding he "can't wait" for a decision to be made either way, as he continues to build his squad ahead of the new season.

Postecoglou's need for clarity over whether Kane is leaving the club could pressure Levy into making a decision soon, but for the meantime it appears as though he will continue to play hardball with Bayern Munich.

BCCI to challenge Kerala High Court order on Sreesanth ban

In August, the High Court had ordered the BCCI to lift the life ban on the fast bowler, stating the board had no “incriminating evidence”

Nagraj Gollapudi19-Sep-2017The BCCI has challenged a Kerala High Court judgement from last month, which had ordered the board to lift its life ban on fast bowler Sreesanth. The BCCI had banned Sreesanth in 2013 for his alleged involvement in the Indian Premier League corruption scandal. Sreesanth was one of three Rajasthan Royals players – Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan being the others – to be handed a life ban by the BCCI for an alleged role in the scandal. In February this year, Sreesanth filed a writ petition in the Kerala High Court challenging the ban, after the BCCI refused to issue a no-objection certificate for him to play league cricket in Scotland. A writ is an application filed in the court asking it to enforce some right against an authority or against an order against which there is no statutory remedy. In his petition, Sreesanth argued that in 2015 a trial court in Delhi had dropped charges filed by the Delhi Police against him, Chavan and Chandila. The three were among 42 individuals chargesheeted by the Delhi Police under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).In the absence of a specific criminal law to deal with spot-fixing in India, the cricketers were chargesheeted for offences under the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the MCOCA. The court, however, said there was not enough evidence for charges to be framed under MCOCA, a special law passed by the Maharashtra state government to tackle organised crime syndicates and terrorism. The MCOCA contains much stricter provisions relating to bail and admissibility of confessions compared to the Indian Penal Code.In August, Justice A Muhamed Mustaque of the Kerala High Court, accepted Sreesanth’s appeal and told the BCCI it had no “incriminating evidence” against the player and hence the ban should be “quashed”.On its part, the BCCI maintained the ban was handed after a one-man inquiry commission found Sreesanth guilty of various offences under the board’s anti-corruption code. The BCCI has now decided to challenge the order of Justice Mustaque. In an application filed in the Kerala High Court on Monday, the BCCI has pointed whether “interference” by a writ court was warranted”. The BCCI has also asked whether the writ court could “sit in appeal” and “alter the quantum of penalty imposed” against the findings of the board’s disciplinary committee. The BCCI said that its decision was in “accordance” with the principles of natural justice and it has now asked the court to decide whether Justice Mustaque’s order was “contrary to law and to principles of justice, equity and good conscience and ought to be set aside?”

Sharjeel Khan banned for five years by PCB

Sharjeel Khan arrives to attend an anti-corruption tribunal meeting in Lahore•AFP

Sharjeel Khan has been banned from all forms of cricket for five years for his role in the spot-fixing scandal that marred the Pakistan Super League (PSL) earlier this year. Sharjeel, playing for Islamabad United, was charged with five major breaches of the PCB’s anti-corruption code and was found guilty on all five counts by a three-man tribunal. Two-and-a-half years out of the five-year sentence are suspended, meaning Sharjeel, 28, cannot plot a return to cricket before the second half of 2019 at the earliest. Sharjeel was present at his sentencing but did not take questions.Potentially, his ban could have been for life, but he has been given the minimum punishment on all charges. Sharjeel’s lawyer, Shaigan Ijaz, said they would appeal against the ban.”We were expecting acquittal against the spot-fixing charges and we are going to appeal against them,” Ijaz said immediately after the verdict. “We are not complaining against the behaviour of the tribunal members, but we are objecting to the decision. As we understand, those three serious charges have not been proven. For now, we have concerns and will lodge an appeal after having a full, detailed order in the next 14 days.”Taffazul Rizvi, the PCB’s prosecutor in the case, called it a “sad day”, but said the player had been found guilty on all counts and the board’s case against the player had been vindicated. “The suspended sentence isn’t defined as yet in the PCB anti-corruption code as there is a limited provision. Just because two-and-a-half years of the sentence are suspended doesn’t mean the player can automatically be eligible to play after completing half his sentence. There is a complete process of rehabilitation, and many more conditions to be met before reintegration.”In a statement following the tribunal verdict, PCB chairman Najam Sethi said: “The anti-corruption tribunal’s verdict against Sharjeel Khan is a vindication of our policy of zero tolerance against corrupt practices in the game of cricket. The PCB Anti-Corruption and Vigilance Department deserves great credit for identifying the culprits and nipping the spot-fixing scandal in the bud through their prompt action. The PCB hopes that the three remaining players will be dealt with in accordance to the proportionality of their offences. The PCB will continue to fight all corrupt elements that attempt to tarnish the game both at the domestic and international level.”Sharjeel’s ban will take effect from when he was first suspended, on February 10, 2017.The verdict puts on hold, at best till mid-2019 and at worst permanently, what was shaping up to be a promising international career. Since his return to the ODI side last year in August Sharjeel was averaging over 44 as an opener but more importantly, given Pakistan’s batting problems, scoring at a strike rate of 130.37. That run came into bloom on the tour to Australia earlier this year, where he broke into the Test side and then finished Pakistan’s second-highest scorer in the ODI series with three fifties. Barely two weeks after his last innings for Pakistan, a 69-ball 79 in Adelaide, he had been provisionally suspended by the PCB.Sharjeel was one of six current or former Pakistani internationals implicated in the case, in itself a blot not only on the promising start to a valuable PCB product, but also to the board’s efforts to fight corruption after the Lord’s spot-fixing scandal of 2010. Mohammad Irfan and Mohammad Nawaz have already been punished, for the relatively lesser indiscretions of failure to report corrupt approaches.Tribunal proceedings for Sharjeel’s Islamabad team-mate Khalid Latif, and former Pakistan openers Nasir Jamshed and Shahzaib Hasan are still underway, however. A verdict is expected on Latif after the Eid break, as well as the next hearing for Shahzaib. Jamshed, who the PCB believe is a central figure in the case but is currently facing charges only of failure to cooperate with the investigation, will next appear before the tribunal on September 19.There was no immediate comment from Islamabad United, the PSL franchise that three of the players – Sharjeel, Latif and Irfan – played for. But it is understood that Sharjeel and Latif’s contracts with them were terminated when they were suspended by the PCB.

Chelsea Chiefs "Downplay" Summer Move For £1.1m-p/w Striker

Chelsea sources are “downplaying” a move that would see them bring Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe to the Premier League, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

Is Kylian Mbappe leaving PSG?

The France international’s contract at the Parc des Princes is set to run out in less than a year, and having informed his hierarchy that he won’t be extending his deal by a further 12 months, he was left out of the club’s pre-season tour squad and was instead sent to train with a group of his teammates who have also been omitted.

Having established himself as Luis Enrique’s best-performing offensive player last season with a WhoScored match rating of 7.80 and of course dominating the World Cup in Qatar, the 24-year-old is bound to attract interest should he depart his homeland outfit, and it sounds like the Ligue 1 giants are preparing to sanction his departure.

Read The Latest Chelsea Transfer News HERE…

The Times reported last month that PSG were expecting to receive offers for their centre-forward from the Blues and clubs in Saudi Arabia, the latter having already happened with Al-Hilal submitting a £259m bid, though the project was turned down by the player, and after plenty of speculation, a much-needed update on Mauricio Pochettino’s stance has been delivered.

Are Chelsea signing Kylian Mbappe?

Writing in his column for CaughtOffside, Jacobs claimed that Chelsea’s owner and manager are both denying that a swoop will take place for Mbappe, but admitted that he is likely to be joining a new club this summer. He said:

“PSG will now listen to all offers and have received some player-swap options. Paris-based sources indicate Todd Boehly was one of the first people to make contact with Nasser Al-Khelaifi over Mbappe. Yet those close to Chelsea continue to downplay a move.

Mauricio Pochettino, who managed Mbappe at PSG, has also said Chelsea have other priorities. So Chelsea are either keeping any approach really secret, have low confidence Mbappe will move to the Premier League, or PSG are simply fuelling interest to put pressure on Real Madrid.”

France striker Kylian Mbappe.

How many goals has Kylian Mbappe scored?

Since joining PSG, Mbappe has racked up an out of this world 310 goal contributions (212 goals and 98 assists) in just 260 appearances which is a remarkable return for any striker, with this probably being one of the main reasons why he currently earns a staggering £1.1m-per-week and therefore £61m-per-year, according to Capology.

The 2018 World Cup winner, who’s sponsored by Nike, recorded 144 shots over the course of the last Ligue 1 campaign which was higher than any other of his teammates, via FBRef, form which saw him collect seven man-of-the-match awards.

Mbappe, who has the versatility to operate everywhere across the frontline, has additionally received plenty of individual recognition for his excellent standard of performances throughout his career having won top goalscorer accolades on ten occasions already, and whilst he would be an unreal signing for the boss, it doesn’t sound like he’ll be on his way to Stamford Bridge anytime soon.

– O Flamengo diz “nosso modelo é o Real Madrid”.

Arsenal Eye Move For "Top-Class" £80m Livewire

Arsenal’s rise to a title contender, spurred on by the relentless Mikel Arteta and his young, dynamic squad has opened up new possibilities in the transfer market, allowing the Gunners to attract a new level of talent.

They have already emphatically flexed their muscle in this summer’s transfer window by beating Manchester City to the signature of Declan Rice.

They have also recruited Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz, with David Raya also on the verge of a move to the Emirates Stadium.

The rumours are suggesting their business is not finished and Nicolo Barella has been linked with a move to North London.

What’s the latest on Nicolo Barella to Arsenal?

According to reports in Italy, Inter Milan are prepared for an assault for the midfielder, with Arsenal as one of the interested parties.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

Earlier in the window, Newcastle United had been chasing Barella, but they were warded off by Inter’s monstrous £80m valuation. Since then, the high-flying Magpies have signed Sandro Tonali.

Would Nicolo Barella be a good signing for Arsenal?

In the past few years, the Italian, who has been lauded as “top-class” by Jurgen Klopp, has established himself as one of the Neazzurri’s most important and influential assets. During the 2020/21 season, Barella scored three times and created nine assists as Inter was crowned the Serie A Champions.

The following term, he notched the joint-second most assists (12) in the league, whilst also winning the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup.

In the most recent season, the 5 foot 8 livewire registered 19 goal involvements, whilst also starting 12 of the club’s 13 Champions League games, in which they made the unlikely journey to the final.

The 45-cap international has always maintained a reputation for being an accomplished midfielder, renowned for his energy, technique, and tenacity – this is portrayed by his domestic statistics from last campaign in which he managed 85% pass accuracy, averaged 1.6 key passes and 1.4 tackles per game, as well as completing 70% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore.

By channelling his defensive and offensive capabilities, Arteta could unearth the perfect candidate to inherit Granit Xhaka’s mantle.

Last season, the former Borussia Monchengladbach assumed a different role in the team. Instead of operating as part of a two-man pivot in a 4-2-3-1 system, primarily tasked with protecting the defence, orchestrating play from deep, and taking long shots, he was instead awarded the role as a freer, more advanced central midfielder.

Granit Xhaka

The 30-year-old relished this opportunity, recording 14 goal contributions and starting in 36 of the club’s 38 Premier League games. Previously, the Swiss had never managed more than eight domestic goal involvements and his departure to Bayer Leverkusen means he will be sorely missed by sections of the fanbase.

However, if the Gunners somehow landed Barella, it can be argued he is an upgrade on Xhaka, outranking his senior for shot-creating actions per 90 (3.65 vs 3.42), progressive passes per 90 (6.62 vs 6.32), progressive carries per 90 (2.8 vs 1.22), and successful take-ons per 90 (1.2 vs 0.49).

These numbers mean that Barella sits within the best 22% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for the aforementioned statistics and would be phenomenal for Arteta’s revolution.
