Rangers had a nightmare with £3.2m signing who now plays in Syria

The honeymoon period for Philippe Clement at Rangers is officially over following two disappointing results in succession.

Last weekend saw the Light Blues drop two points against Aberdeen in a game that they really should have won, dominating in large spells throughout.

It took a last-gasp penalty from James Tavernier to save the day and this should have been a wake-up call for the Belgian heading into the Europa League clash against Aris Limassol.

The same mistakes were made, however, as the Cypriots scored from a long ball over the top which seemed to cause disruption among the centre-backs and the poor defending cost Rangers all three points.

The 49-year-old is working with a squad he inherited from Michael Beale and thus can't be solely blamed for having to utilise the players he has at his disposal.

The poor summer recruitment has really come to the fore recently as several players are so far off the standard required at Ibrox it is worrying.

Cyriel Dessers has managed to score just six goals from 22 appearances and considering he was one of the most expensive arrivals in the summer at £4.5m, these statistics are woeful.

Sam Lammers has also been in dismal form since joining, netting just twice and both he and Dessers may be on the move in January if Clement has his way.

In truth, the Ibrox side haven’t enjoyed the best of times in the transfer market since their promotion back to the Premiership in 2016. Lammers and Dessers are just the two latest names who have arrived for big money before failing to adapt.

Despite the duo severely underperforming, they aren’t quite at the level of Carlos Pena, who is arguably one of the worst signings in the club’s history.

How much Rangers signed Carlos Pena for

The summer of 2017 looked like it could be the busiest in quite a while as Pedro Caixinha aimed to build a team which could finally knock Celtic off their perch and challenge for domestic superiority.

Of course, it didn’t quite work out like that, yet it didn’t stop the Portuguese manager from spending lavishly in order to achieve that goal.

The likes of Alfredo Morelos, Fabio Cardoso and Bruno Alves joined the club, yet eyebrows were raised when striker Eduardo Herrera was signed for a fee in the region of £1.5m before Mexican international Pena joined for a staggering £3.2m, which back in 2017 was a lavish sum for the Gers to spend.

He had represented Mexico at the 2014 World Cup and, on the surface, it looked as though if he hit the ground running, the attacking midfielder could turn out to be a solid piece of transfer business.

Over the next few months, it became clear that Pena wasn’t good enough for the physicality of Scottish football, and he failed to live up to the massive £3.2m fee which was paid to bring him to Scotland.

Carlos Pena’s Rangers statistics

The former Guadalajara gem had enjoyed his best football back in his homeland, scoring 52 goals across 191 games for Club Leon, and while the season prior to him joining the Light Blues wasn’t prolific, Caixinha’s knowledge of Mexican football was looking like it might land the Gers a diamond.

All in all, Pena played just 14 matches for the Glasgow side, struggling with various injury issues and lacking match fitness, while netting five times.

Caixinha tried to justify his poor displays just a few months into his spell, saying: “He has much more to give, believe me. I think he’s at 60 per cent of his capabilities, the way I know him. But I think the first step for everyone to progress is knowing that you need to progress.

“It’s when you’re looking to add something and you say ‘Ok, I agree. Let’s work on it’. We are working. It’s a question of time. In terms of fitness, I can tell you, there is nothing he has to improve.”

Clement must now bench Rangers star who lost possession 12x vs Aris

Rangers face an uphill battle to progress to the knockout stages of the Europa League

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 2, 2023

His final appearance for the club was against Celtic in December 2017, and he has spent the last few years enjoying a nomadic lifestyle.

What Carlos Pena did after leaving Rangers

The 5 foot 7 liability joined Cruz Azul in January 2018 on a temporary deal until the end of the season and his contract at the Light Blues was finally terminated in February 2019 as Steven Gerrard looked to free up some space in the wage bill.

The whole transfer was criticised by Rangers Review journalist Derek Clark, who said that the move was a “disastrous transfer in what was an equally disastrous spell for the club” as the ruling by the Court of Arbitration of Sport justified the decision made by Rangers to terminate Pena’s contract early.

Spells in Mexico, Poland, El Salvador, and Honduras failed to ignite a career which has been on the slide since he departed Scotland in 2018, and it proves just how bad a decision to sign him in the first place.

Despite looking like he was going to retire earlier this year, Pena now currently finds himself at Syrian club Hutteen, having joined in October.

Aged 33, this could be Pena’s final club and it's fair to say his spell at Rangers did not go down well with the supporters at all.

It was a massive waste of money for a player who scored just five times in 14 games, and it has set the precedent for several high-profile signings to follow over the course of the next six years.

Despite the Light Blues returning to prominence by winning a Premiership title and enjoying a stunning run to the final of the Europa League in 2022, they are still guilty of signing the odd expensive dud now and then.

It just so happens that Beale has signed two during the one transfer window, as Lammers and Dessers are destined to leave the club in the near future, having failed to generate any meaningful impact during their short stints in Glasgow thus far.

Let's hope that once the winter window opens, Clement doesn’t repeat past mistakes.

Gakpo distracted from just how good 8/10 Liverpool star was vs LASK

Liverpool eased to victory against LASK in the Europa League to confirm qualification to the round of 16, with Toulouse's failure to defeat Union Saint-Gilloise confirming Jurgen Klopp's side as group winners.

It was a largely comfortable affair that showcased the Reds' blistering attacking power, albeit if the hosts did squander a score of opportunities.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

But nonetheless, the rotated rearguard proved its worth and Caoimhin Kelleher was a wall between the sticks, making some stellar saves with Alisson out injured.

Cody Gakpo was the shining star in attack, however, with his talismanic performance clinching qualification.

Cody Gakpo vs LASK in numbers

Gakpo needed that one. The Dutchman has not been under-par this season, per se, but has struggled to cement himself in Klopp's side with a statement showing.

It came tonight, with a brace lifting his seasonal tally to six goals and an assist from just ten starting appearances across all competitions, with reporter Neil Jones noting the 24-year-old's "standout" display.

With Diogo Jota set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an issue during last weekend's draw against Manchester City, Gakpo's return to goalscoring form came at the apt moment, with his boots sure to be needed over the coming weeks.

Liverpool's "unplayable" academy star could soon usurp Gakpo and Nunez

Jurgen Klopp could soon unearth Liverpool’s next big thing…

ByRosie Tudball Nov 22, 2023

The winter period is gruelling at the best of times, and Klopp will truly be delighted with his side's constancy despite rotation, with Harvey Elliott proving once again that he can make the No. 8 role his own in the engine room.

Harvey Elliott's performance vs LASK

Elliott was a mainstay for Liverpool last season and completed 46 appearances across all competitions; this term, he has started just once in the Premier League but has been integral in cup competitions, glittering once again last night.

As per Sofascore, the dynamic gem took 75 touches across the 90 minutes he was on the pitch, making three key passes, unleashing four shots (forcing one particularly good save from Tobias Tobias Okiki Lawal), succeeding with his sole dribble attempt, and winning two of his four contested ground duels.

Noted for his "visionary" distribution by TNT Sports' commentator Ian Darke, the £40k-per-week Elliott has taken some impressive strides this season and looks mature and at home in the centre of the park, running the show with his creative, controlled presence.

Handing him an 8/10 match rating, the Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle was effusive in his remarks over the 20-year-old's display: 'Busy and effective on the right of midfield three, picking up a lot of loose balls and fired one free-kick wide and forced good Lawal save. Fine display.'

harvey-elliott-liverpool

It was by no means a flawless night for the rising star, who did lose the ball 22 times as he looked to influence the flow, but Liverpool supporters – if they are not already – really should start getting excited.

Elliott is making incremental progress and, with the pieces starting to slot together, could play a central role in the Anfield side's efforts over the coming months.

West Indies' last chance to salvage Bangladesh tour

Having lost the Test and then the ODI series, the visitors will look to spring a surprise on Bangladesh in the T20I series decider

After West Indies won the first T20I, Bangladesh hit back in the second to force this series into a decider. The third T20I will be West Indies’ last chance to salvage something from this tour.Bangladesh had a near-perfect batting performance in the second T20I, with Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das getting off to quick starts before Soumya Sarkar took on the bowling. 'There is an edge between us' – Phil Parkinson opens up on rivalry with Stockport after Ryan Reynolds and Rob Elhenney's side beat League Two champions

Phil Parkinson speaks openly about the rivalry between Wrexham and Stockport County as the clubs climb the EFL ladder together.

Wrexham & Stockport have become rivalsTwo title races in three seasonsParkinson explains how it will continueWHAT HAPPENED?

In addition to the relative geographic proximity – about 50 miles separate the working class towns – adding spice, Parkinson explained that the clubs are likely to be competing for the same players in the transfer window this summer as they each build a squad to be competitive in League One.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

This was the second time in three seasons that Wrexham and Stockport have battled for a league title. Back in 2021-22, when there was only one automatic promotion place out of the National League, it was the latter who were victorious as Wrexham fell in the play-offs. Stockport then ended up losing last season's League Two play-off final as Wrexham won the National League, serving to reunite them. It was predicted from the start of the campaign that they would go head-to-head once more, which proved to be the case. Both sealed automatic promotion on the same day, but Stockport got the last laugh by topping it off with the league title, despite losing at the Racecourse on the final day.

WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Via , Parkinson said: "There is an edge between us and Stockport after the year we had in the National League. We have been progressing together. Everyone has said they are ahead of us in terms of that progression. They’ve had longer in [League Two]. Also, they’ve had longer with their owners and longer to work on their infrastructure. But we are catching them quickly.

"Stockport are as ambitious as ourselves. We probably get a bit more publicity because of [], but I am sure we will be competing with them in the summer for players.

"This has happened in the past, and I’m sure it will happen again. We have to make sure we get our targets in position, but Stockport will be fighting hard to get those players as well."

DID YOU KNOW?

Rather like Wrexham with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Stockport have massively benefitted from new ownership in recent years after previously falling on hard times. The club was taken over by local businessman Mark Stott in 2020, a year after promotion out of the sixth tier National League North, leading to huge investments being made in infrastructure and two further promotions in quick succession.

Howe has struck gold with Newcastle’s "outstanding" £26m-rated star

Newcastle United have been a cut above the previous standard since Eddie Howe's arrival two years ago, having turned consistent relegation battles into a fight for European football and success on the continental scene.

The PIF takeover has, of course, been a crucial ingredient to their transformation, as the riches presented to the Englishman have allowed him to splash the cash in the transfer window.

While the likes of Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak were brought in as a result of this influx of investment – and have formed the backbone of their success – much credit has to go to Howe for his transformation of several fringe players, who were at the club prior to his arrival.

One of those is energetic midfielder Sean Longstaff.

Sean Longstaff's career so far

A product of Newcastle's youth academy – after joining at the age of nine – Longstaff has been plying his trade in black and white for 17 years but it's only recently where his attributes have been allowed to flourish.

The 26-year-old's journey towards first-team stardom has been a tricky one, as the early years of his development were blighted by injuries and this curtailed his chances of becoming a regular fixture in the senior setup.

sean-longstaff-newcastle-opinion

From being loaned out to Kilmarnock and Blackpool between 2017 and 2018 to suffering multiple serious injuries that saw him miss 120 days of the 2018/19 campaign, Longstaff never managed to nail a place in the starting XI, but that all changed when Howe arrived at the club.

Now a crucial cog in Newcastle's side due to his boundless amounts of energy, who brings the best out of midfield partners Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes, Longstaff is an "unsung hero" as dubbed by pundit Paul Merson – who has popped up with some incredible moments for the Toon in recent times.

After scoring a brace in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Southampton last term to notching in the Champions League against PSG, it is clear to see why the term unsung hero is coined for the Englishman.

However, it's more than just his goals that have impressed the masses this term.

Sean Longstaff's current transfer value

Longstaff has appeared in all but one match for Newcastle this season, scoring three times and assisting once.

In addition to popping up with match-winning moments from midfield, the 26-year-old has demonstrated his ability to drive the attacking phases of play.

Sean Longstaff

He is particularly adept at providing dangerous progressive passes forward and this is a crucial attribute to have as a midfielder.

Dubbed as "outstanding" previously by journalist Henry Winter, Longstaff averages 5.32 progressive passes per game, 2.22 touches in the attacking penalty box and 3.55 progressive passes received, as per FBref.

Clearly able to dictate the tempo of a match with his exquisite passing range and composure, his main strength is covering ground and winning possession back for his team, having averaged 3.8 balls recovered, 1.3 tackles and 3.2 duels won this term.

As a result of his impressive displays that have caught the eye, Longstaff is now worth £26m (€30m), as per Football Observatory, which is a testament to how much he's improved in recent years.

Two days after picking a hat-trick on his BPL debut, Dhaka Dynamites offspinner Aliss Islam is under the scanner for a suspect bowling action. No sooner than a few hours after the game, the Rangpur Riders team management realised that the 22-year old had a “faulty action.”According to the Bengali daily , all his deliveries in Thursday’s clash between Dhaka and Rangpur were found to be suspect.Aliss took the tournament’s third hat-trick by removing Mohammad Mithun, Mashrafe Mortaza and Farhad Reza. Then, he picked the key wicket of Rilee Rossouw, who made a 44-ball 83 to put Rangpur on top. Then, with Rangpur needing 14 off the last over, Aliss only conceded 11 to give Dhaka a two-run win over the defending champions.Jalal Yunus, head of BPL’s Technical Committee and BCB’s bowling action Review Committee, confirmed that the on-field umpires had reported Islam’s action to the BPL governing council. The 22-year old will have 14 days to report to the review committee.”He will have a test and if we find something, he will be off from all forms of cricket unless his action is corrected,” Yunus confirmed. In fact, Yunus had also revealed that he thought Islam’s action was suspect even when he played in the Dhaka First-Division League last year, but that he had rectified it.He is the third bowling to be reported in the BPL. In 2016, West Indies allrounder Kevon Cooper and Bangladesh left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny were reported for illegal actions.
