'Middle-order role one of the toughest in T20 cricket' – Jonathan Wells

Coming in mostly at No.5, the Adelaide Strikers batsman has scored 803 runs over the last two BBL seasons at an average of 57.35.

He has been compared to Michael Bevan. There are growing calls for him to be given a spot in Australia’s T20I middle order. But Jonathan Wells is focused on the here and now, continuing his prolific form in “one of the toughest roles” in T20 cricket and helping the Adelaide Strikers towards the Big Bash final.His top line numbers are outstanding: 444 runs in the regular season at 74.00 and a strike-rate of 136.19. The majority of his 13 innings have been at No.5, while those around him in the leading-scorers list are ones who occupy the top three positions and therefore the chance to face the most balls.At the Adelaide Strikers, that luxury goes to Jake Weatherald and Phil Salt followed by Travis Head and Alex Carey when not on Australia duty, with Wells occasionally moving up a spot when one is absent. He usually has to wait, knowing there are a whole range of situations where he could be called upon but in most of them he won’t have much time.”I think if you ask any batsman what their preference would be they probably say the top three, purely on the numbers, you have the opportunity to face as many balls as you can, also having fielding restrictions,” Wells told ESPNcricinfo. “The actual middle-order role is one of the toughest in T20 cricket and I think it’s a bit of a niche position where not everyone can do it. I think a lot of players could go up the top and do a similar type of job, but through the middle if you can nail that position then it’s very good for a team to have someone in that position they can rely on and can play a few different scenarios.”!function(){“use strict”;window.addEventListener(“message”,function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[“datawrapper-height”])for(var e in a.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var t=document.getElementById(“datawrapper-chart-“+e)||document.querySelector(“iframe[src*='”+e+”‘]”);t&&(t.style.height=a.data[“datawrapper-height”][e]+”px”)}})}();

This isn’t the first season Wells has impressed in the position. In the 2018-19 BBL, he scored 359 runs meaning in the last two campaigns he currently tallies 803 at 57.35 – of batsmen to have at least 25 innings across all T20s since the start of last season’s BBL, only David Warner (70.70) and Manish Pandey (57.73) have a better average. Overall he is the sixth-highest scorer in the tournament’s history. Once again, the only ones around him are players who have largely forged their careers batting one to four.”Last season was a good season and I was happy with how I played but then I probably have come back a better player this year,” Wells said. “I think that’s really important, to keep adapting and evolving. Teams have a lot of footage and analysis on you these days to try and get a step ahead of the game and you have to keep adapting to counter that and I feel like I have improved this year. The consistency this year has probably been the notable difference which is the challenge in that role in T20.”However, it’s a deeper drill down into Wells’ numbers which really show how he has become so proficient at his role that he is being compared to one of the game’s great finishers. Dot-ball percentage may not sound like the most glamorous of stats, but for a batsman in Wells’ position it is a vital element of the game. For the opposition, dot balls are like gold dust.Going back to the start of 2013, no batsman in any T20 league around the world (who has faced a minimum 300 balls in the competition) has a lower dot-ball percentage than Wells in this season’s BBL: 23%.”Definitely it’s a focus of mine to limit those dot balls,” Wells said. “It’s really important from a partnership point of view to not build pressure on the batsman who is in. Generally coming in the middle order there’s a batsman who has hopefully been there a bit longer and is hitting the ball alright so to just get them back on strike.!function(){“use strict”;window.addEventListener(“message”,function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[“datawrapper-height”])for(var e in a.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var t=document.getElementById(“datawrapper-chart-“+e)||document.querySelector(“iframe[src*='”+e+”‘]”);t&&(t.style.height=a.data[“datawrapper-height”][e]+”px”)}})}();

“It’s a big part of my game and if I’m not being able to find the fence, then I am getting up the other end. I probably don’t have the power game that some of the other guys do that bat in those positions, but I’ve just had to find a way to make it work for myself and that’s revolved around not getting stuck on strike.”I like to have a few options, I’ve got a few zones I prefer to go to and that depends on the opposition, the field set and the wicket you are playing on. The planning side of it is something I do spend a bit of time on, my preparation and planning holds me in really good stead to be able to go out there and play with a clear mind.”So what of the comparisons being made?”I personally don’t think I’m anywhere near but it’s nice to be compared a little bit in the way I go about it, they were obviously ultra-consistent and really good finishers in white-ball cricket. That’s something I’m aspiring towards. When you go to the crease, that your team has confidence that you will get the job done, knowing the boys in the sheds have the confidence that no matter what the situation that I can get the job done.”There is a T20 World Cup on home soil later this year. This summer, Australia’s T20I side would have won all six matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan if not for rain in Sydney, but that does not mean there isn’t time for things to change – especially in the middle order.”I’m not reading much into it,” he said. “That word expectation, I’m not trying to put any on myself or added pressure. I’m just having a lot of fun playing for the Strikers. There are different articles that you do see, but I’m trying to just focus on what I can control which is the next game for the Strikers. We have an important game on Saturday in a knockout final so not thinking past that.”Having ended third in the BBL table, the Strikers will have to win three games in a row to take the title. That starts with the Sydney Thunder at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday. Do not be surprised if, whether batting first or second, Wells is there getting the job done.

Spurs line up move for £60m star who’d be their new Eriksen

If you ask any Tottenham Hotspur fan what period in recent times was the most enjoyable and successful, almost every individual would say the run from 2015–19.

The core of that success involved the likes of Heung-min Son, Harry Kane, and Jan Vertonghen, but there was one player who was just as influential.

The player in question is Christian Eriksen, who featured in 305 matches for the Lilywhites, scoring 69 times and providing 90 assists.

New boss Ange Postecoglou is keen to strengthen his midfield this summer, and on his radar is a highly-rated Eriksen clone.

Spurs’ search for a new midfielder

As per a recent report from Ben Jacobs via CaughtOffside, Spurs are seriously interested in signing Giorgiy Sudakov.

The Ukrainian star plays for Shakhtar Donetsk, who are known to be difficult to deal with in regards to transfers.

Heorhiy Sudakov for Shakhtar

Despite having an incredible £128m release clause in his contract, it’s reported that a fee of around £60m will likely be enough to secure his services in the summer.

However, if Spurs do go ahead with attempting to sign the midfielder, they will face competition from European giants such as Inter and Juventus.

Spurs have a "generational" teen talent who could be the new Dele Alli

This star could rival players such as James Maddison for a spot in Postecoglou’s first-team in good time.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 17, 2024 Sudakov would be a James Maddison rival

James Maddison’s start to life at Tottenham couldn’t have gone any smoother, with the £40m man scoring twice and assisting twice in his first four league matches.

However, an injury against Chelsea earlier this season saw him miss 13 games of action, and since then, he’s not been quite as impactful, failing to register a goal contribution in his last five matches.

Nonetheless, the interest in Sudakov highlights one of two things: either Postecoglou isn’t entirely happy with Maddison being his first choice number ten, or he intends to tweak the system next season.

The 21-year-old star is an attacking midfielder by trade, but he’s already shown that he can comfortably play as a left midfielder or slightly deeper as a box-to-box this season.

As you can see by the table above, the number 10 has shown that he can compete against the very best, as he starred in the Champions League against Barcelona earlier this season.

Playing away to Barca is often a daunting prospect for the most experienced players, but Sudakov proved that he’s not afraid of any challenge, as he was constantly a threat against the La Liga side.

What this game highlighted in particular was that the Ukraine star doesn’t only create, but he’s also a goal-scorer. The fact that he’s netted seven goals in 28 appearances this season further supports that.

Another aspect that was impressive was the way he dazzled the Barca midfield with his dribbling, completing 100% of his take-ons, which certainly highlights his technical ability.

Furthermore, the fact that he had 62 touches and completed 40 passes proves that he’s an extremely confident individual who is desperate to put his stamp on the game, which is what Tottenham need right now in particular.

Georgiy Sudakov for Shakhtar Donetsk.

What makes this potential move even more interesting is the fact that football scout Jacek Kulig has previously compared Sudakov to Eriksen, with the player's range of passing, creativity, and set piece mastery alike.

Sudakov, therefore, is most definitely a promising talent, but surely Spurs wouldn’t spend £60m on a Maddison backup? Either way, the thought of welcoming another Eriksen to north London will be a tantalising one.

As PSG prepare to kick off their Ligue 1 title defence, all eyes were on the squad selection by head coach Luis Enrique. The reigning French champions are set to face newly-promoted Le Havre at the Stade Océane, but the absence of Ugarte from the 20-man travelling squad raised eyebrows as his omission has only intensified rumours of a potential exit, with United reportedly leading the race for his signature.

According to , the Red Devils are locked in negotiations with PSG and the deal is still "absolutely on". The 23-year-old was acquired from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of around £51 million ($66m), a similar amount to what PSG is now demanding from his suitors. However, United have so far been reluctant to meet PSG's asking price which has seen the transfer stall.

Reports from within the Ugarte camp suggest that the player is eager to make the switch to Old Trafford. It is believed that Ugarte has already agreed to personal terms with the Premier League giants, and he has made it clear that he wants the move to happen "as soon as possible." And the recent omission from the matchday squad is an indication that the player could realise his dream of playing in the Premier League before the transfer window closes.

Aston Villa hit gold on £17m hero who’d be worth more than Watkins in 2024

Aston Villa’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth on the weekend saw them extend their lead over Tottenham Hotspur to six points in the chase for the final coveted Champions League spot for next season.

With just four Premier League fixtures left, Unai Emery is on course to lead his side to something rather special. Combine this with a chance to end their 28-year trophy drought by winning the Europa Conference League, this season could be one that goes down in the annals as one of their finest ever.

The Spaniard has assembled a team which, on paper, is certainly one of the strongest in the Premier League. They have solid options at centre-back, John McGinn and Douglas Luiz to control a match from the heart of the midfield, while wide options like Moussa Diaby and Leon Bailey have demonstrated their attacking skills regularly – the pair scoring 23 goals between them in all competitions.

Being able to call upon Ollie Watkins has arguably been the difference for Villa, turning them into top six hopefuls to potential Conference League winners and qualification to the Champions League.

Ollie Watkins’ statistics this season for Aston Villa

The Englishman joined the Midlands side in 2020 from Brentford in a deal worth £33m, which was a club record at the time.

It saw the striker reunite with Dean Smith, who had signed him for the Bees in 2017, and it didn’t take long for Watkins to make his mark in the top flight.

During his maiden season for Villa, he scored 14 goals in 37 Premier League matches, but this tally dropped to 11 efforts the following season.

Goals were hard to come by under the leadership of Steven Gerrard, but once Emery took over in October 2022, the centre-forward went on a run of scoring 13 goals in just 24 matches in the league, emerging as a player who could have an excellent future under the tutelage of Emery.

That wonderful run last season certainly gave him plenty of confidence ahead of the current campaign as he has been exceptional for Villa.

At the time of writing, Watkins has scored 26 goals and chipped in with 12 assists across 47 games in all competitions, becoming a player who is simply undroppable at the moment.

Not only does the former Brentford machine have the highest overall Sofascore rating among his teammates (7.4) in the Premier League, but he also ranks first for goals and assists (31), shots on target per game (1.4) and big chances missed (20), indicating if his composure was slightly better, he would have a lot more goals to his name.

His performances have helped the club reach the lofty heights of fourth in the division, while his market value is continuing to rise.

Ollie Watkins’ market value at Aston Villa

According to Football Transfers, the striker is currently worth €48.9m (£42m) and his value has been on the rise since he made the move to Villa nearly four years ago.

If he maintains his current form, it will only increase in the coming months, although this could potentially see potential suitors take interest.

Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins.

His £42m valuation is high, no doubt about it, but Villa sold a striker who had banged in the goals for the club during his spell between 1990 and 1998 for a fee which would work out as nearly double that if judging by inflation – Dwight Yorke.

Dwight Yorke’s statistics for Aston Villa

The former Trinidad and Tobago international striker began his senior career in the United Kingdom at Villa Park.

His first season playing in the Premier League saw Yorke score six goals in 27 matches, but it wasn’t until the 1995/96 season that he emerged as a player to watch out for.

This wasn’t just a fluke campaign either, as another 17-goal haul followed during 1996/97, while 12 more goals were added in what turned out to be his final year at the club, as other clubs soon came sniffing.

While a switch to a bigger club looked imminent, a move to Manchester United certainly came as a surprise. Sir Alex Ferguson had wanted to sign Patrick Kluivert, but after he joined Barcelona, he soon turned his eyes to Yorke.

John Gregory was desperate to keep hold of his star man, but it was clear competing for trophies plus an improved pay packet were two things Villa couldn’t provide.

He signed in August 1998 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Dwight Yorke’s market value in 2024 money

With Ferguson desperate to add something extra to his attacking options, Yorke was signed for £17m, which represented a massive profit for Villa.

In 2024 however – with Totally Money having adjusted for inflation over the years – that transfer fee would now be worth an eye-watering £75.6m.

This is nearly double the market value of Watkins currently as he is on a sublime run of form, showing that Villa hit the jackpot with the striker over 25 years ago.

What Dwight Yorke did after leaving Villa

Following his time in the Midlands, Yorke's spell at the Red Devils would see him win three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and the Champions League, forming a sensational partnership with fellow striker Andy Cole.

Overall, he played 152 matches for the Old Trafford side, scoring 66 goals and grabbing 32 assists, which wasn’t a bad return at all, before he moved to Blackburn Rovers in 2002.

Spells at Birmingham City, Sydney FC and Sunderland saw the player round off his career, becoming one of the finest strikers throughout the first ten years of the league's inception.

If only Villa could call upon a player like that to partner Watkins up front, they might have been in contention to win the title rather than aiming for a fourth-place finish, given how good Yorke was at his peak.

Being valued at £75m in today’s market certainly proves the club made the right choice by selling him, despite not wanting to lose a wonderful talent who could provide plenty of goals and drama in equal measure.

Wow: “Special” Liverpool ace wanted by Galatasaray this summer

Turkish outfit Galatasaray are reportedly after a "special" Liverpool player in the summer transfer window, in what could be a shock development.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds have six mammoth Premier League matches remaining this season before the Jurgen Klopp era at Anfield comes to an end. Once the new manager is brought in during the summer, he will no doubt want to bring in players who suit his style of play, so plenty of business can be expected.

One player who has been linked with a switch to Liverpool in the coming months is Bayern Munich superstar Jamal Musiala, who could be weighing up his options. Manchester City are also showing strong interest in the attacker, with a return to England far from out of the question.

Jamal Musiala for Bayern Munich.

Last summer, the Reds showed interest in signing Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill, and a recent report has suggested that they could be back in for him during the summer. Young Senegal defender Mikayil Faye is another individual who has been backed to seal a move to Merseyside, with additions to the backline potentially needed if Joel Matip departs when his contract expires at the end of the campaign, as is expected.

There could be others who leave Liverpool, however, and a surprise exit claim has now emerged.

"Special" Liverpool player linked with exit

According to Turkish outlet Fotomac, Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch is wanted by Galatasaray this summer, with the Super Lig giants seeing him as a strong option to bring in. He is looked at as an ideal midfield partner for Lucas Torreira.

This is a rumour that has seemingly come from nowhere, and it would be an undoubted surprise to see the 21-year-old depart so soon into his Reds career.

Gravenberch only joined from Bayern last summer, and while he has struggled to impress as much as fellow new signings Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo, he has undoubted talent, with assistant manager Pep Lijnders calling him "special" and also saying of him:

"Ryan in the final third, as an eight, is the one who slides, the one who still has [an] overview, the one who has a first touch with his left or right to get out of a situation, out of proper pressure. He can keep the ball under high pressure and still find the passing option forward. He is a complete, complete eight with scoring and with attitude. It is the eight we searched for and the eight we got. We are thankful to our owners and our scouting and everyone who made it happen."

Romano confirms Liverpool interest in £100m Szoboszlai upgrade

This star could be the perfect player to lead the post-Klopp era.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 20, 2024

Granted, more is needed from Gravenberch moving forward, with the Dutchman struggling with consistency across his 21 Premier League appearances this season, but he has been compared to Jude Bellingham in the past, and he is worth persevering with, assuming the new manager wants him.

Nunez benched in predicted Liverpool lineup vs Sheffield United

Many eyes are understandably already on Liverpool's trip to Old Trafford to meet Manchester United on Sunday but Jurgen Klopp's side must first ensure victory over Sheffield United in the Premier League tomorrow evening.

The Blades are marooned at the bottom of the table and have been luckless on their return to the big time, albeit there's no argument that they have been abysmal defensively and will bear the worst defensive record in Premier League history should they ship 13 more goals across their nine remaining fixtures.

First-placed Liverpool have created the most big chances in the division this term with 77 and one would judge that the hosts' firepower would prove too big a hurdle for Chris Wilder's team, but stranger things have happened.

Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota all remain sidelined but Curtis Jones is likely to be involved in some capacity and Andy Robertson has overcome the issue sustained on international duty.

With the key showdown against the Red Devils coming days later, Klopp might make four changes to the team that defeated Brighton & Hove Albion to return to the league summit last time out.

1

GK – Caoimhin Kelleher

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Alisson should return between the sticks this month but not just yet. Still, Caoimhin Kelleher has hardly been poor in his absence, has he?

The Irishman's commanding displays have been vital for Liverpool over the past several months and he will have more than a few suitors lurking around during the summer.

2

RB – Joe Gomez

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Conor Bradley's been described as "one of the biggest revelations of 23/24" by talent scout Jacek Kulig but he will return to the bench tomorrow, rested ahead of the showing at the Theatre.

A bit of a positional nomad this season, Joe Gomez should slot back into his natural position, and he should be well up for the occasion against the Blades.

3

CB – Jarell Quansah

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.

Jarell Quansah started against the Seagulls and he will retain his spot tomorrow evening, with Ibrahima Konate likely spared ahead of the weekend's meeting.

Hailed as an "absolute monster" by Kulig for his FA Cup performance against Arsenal, the 21-year-old academy talent has been sublime this term and looks fit for purpose for years to come.

4

CB – Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

He's played a lot of football this season but Liverpool's captain will command from the rearguard once again. Virgil van Dijk has been sensational this season and if the Merseysiders do clinch the Premier League title, he will have possibly played the most important part.

He'll be confident in blunting the opponents' blade at Anfield tomorrow.

5

LB – Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson for Liverpool.

Robertson missed out against Brighton but he is in contention to return against Sheffield United as he continues his bid to rekindle his former fluency down the left channel.

It's been a stuttering season for the Scotland captain but he should find ample opportunity to project his creativity onto his attacking peers tomorrow.

6

DM – Wataru Endo

Wataru Endo for Liverpool.

He's just great, isn't he? Wataru Endo will anchor the Liverpool midfield across both forthcoming Premier League fixtures and he will do so with diligence and conviction.

A tough-tackling, assured presence in the centre of the park, Endo is so important and allows the flair-fuelled peers ahead of him to strut their stuff with confidence.

7

CM – Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister

We're running out of superlatives for Alexis Mac Allister, who produced the magnum opus of his Liverpool career (so far) against his former outfit on Sunday, simply mesmeric in his creative and controlling display.

As per FBref, the 2022 World Cup winner ranks among the top 5% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 10% for shot-creating actions, the top 16% for passes attempted, the top 17% for progressive passes, the top 19% for tackles and the top 2% for blocks per 90.

Some player. Some impact.

8

CM – Ryan Gravenberch

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

It's been a campaign of promise for Ryan Graveberch, yes, but it's also been a season in which the talented 21-year-old's deficiencies have been discernible.

Still, Gravenberch is elegant and silky on the ball, with impressive playmaking ability and sharp intelligence. He needs to mesh it all together and he will have a great chance to do just that against United.

9

RW – Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool

Is there any question about who will perch on the right flank of Liverpool's frontline? Mohamed Salah has been as brilliant as ever in front of goal and boasts a return of 22 goals and 13 assists from 33 matches in all competitions.

Interestingly, he's scored just one goal from five matches against the forthcoming opposition, yet to assist a teammate.

10

LW – Luis Diaz

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz warming up.

Luis Diaz is an indefatigable machine on that left flank for Klopp's side and it's hard to imagine he won't inflict a spate of problems on Sheffield United.

As per Sofascore, the Colombian has scored seven goals and supplied three assists from 23 starting appearances in the Premier League this term, completing 85% of his passes and averaging 1.3 key passes, 1.6 dribbles, 3.5 ball recoveries and 4.4 successful duels per game.

Tottenham looking to land next Kvaratskhelia over Arsenal in summer deal

After a season full of promising moments, Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur have turned their attention to beating North London rivals Arsenal away from the pitch to land a future star.

Tottenham transfer news

Several names have already been linked with the Lilywhites ahead of the summer transfer window, with a replacement for Harry Kane seemingly among the priorities. The forward left a gaping hole in Postecoglou's squad last summer when he left for Bayern Munich and that gap is yet to be filled. And has good as Hueng-min Son and Richarlison have been, Spurs still lack an out and out focal point.

Tottenham eye move to sign "outstanding" £100m striker for Ange – report

His club will need to raise funds this summer and Spurs are looking to take advantage,

ByBen Browning Apr 2, 2024

With that said, the likes of Ivan Toney and Alexander Isak have been the names in the headlines recently. Two players who know exactly how to find the back of the net in the Premier League, Spurs would be wise to go after either of the forwards this summer, especially if they want to bridge the gap on the Premier League's top four and reach the knockout stages of the Champions League once again.

armando-broja-alexander-isak-west-ham

It's not just the present squad that those in North London are thinking about, however. According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Spurs are interested in 16-year-old wonderkid Vakhtang Salia alongside Arsenal and Manchester City this summer. The Georgian has been described as the next Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has been linked with the Premier League in the past after becoming a star at Napoli.

Salia is currently at Kvaratskhelia's former club Dinamo Tbilisi and has already made starts for the first-team and found the back of the net twice, despite still being just 16-years-old. Now, he could follow a similar path to his compatriot by moving to a club in one of Europe's top leagues.

Negotiations will be tough for Spurs ahead of clubs in Manchester City's and Arsenal's position, but they will hope that Postecoglou's project makes for a convincing pitch if they go ahead with a deal.

Salia can follow Kane path

Whilst Spurs may not find the next Kane within their own academy, Salia has certainly earned the reviews to become exactly that if they can bring him in. The so-called next Kvaratskhelia could follow the path of Kane to legend status if he rose through the ranks at Spurs.

Given that Georgia are even considering handing the teenager a call up to their Euro 2024 squad this summer too, this seems like a deal Spurs should do everything to avoid missing out on. Whatever Salia's current valuation is, it is only likely to go up if he gets an opportunity on the biggest stage in the coming months.

What's more, these rumours highlight the impressive work done off the pitch to consider both the current squad and future side. Postecoglou's project is still in its early stages, but even if the Lilywhites miss out on top four this season, there's plenty of signs that Spurs' patience will be rewarded in the next few years, as the Australian's quest to lower the age of their squad and recruits goes on.

Russell Domingo the 'in-between guy' for BCB and players

Domingo and Mominul had to face several questions about the statements made by BCB chief Nazmul Hassan earlier this week

Mohammad Isam21-Feb-2020Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo wants to act as a conduit between the players and the BCB president who openly criticised the Bangladesh players recently in the media, and gave them strict instructions to tell him everything about team affairs. Domingo and captain Mominul Haque had to field several questions about the statements made by BCB chief Nazmul Hassan, with both offering smiles and trying to deflect the matter. On Tuesday, Hassan said that the team management must inform him of their intentions and game plans, including the exact batting line-up the day before. They cannot change their plans once he is informed, he said. Hassan also said that he has no confidence in the team beating Zimbabwe in the one-off Test starting Saturday, mainly because they lost to Afghanistan in September. It elicited a strong reaction among the fans in Bangladesh, with many accusing Hassan of being too hands-on with his approach with the team. Domingo, however, defused the questions in the pre-match press conference.”Remember, I come from South Africa, a lot of trouble goes in there,” Domingo said, with laughter around the media conference room. “It is not like I am coming from England or Australia where it’s easy where you do what you want to. I come from South Africa. It is tough there as well; selection is not easy. There’s people with a lot of opinions and agendas. It is part of my job, and I have to deal with it [and] make the most of it.”The important thing for me is that I keep the players and the captains away from it. I have to be the in-between guy. It is a big role but I have done it before in South Africa. There’s a lot of trouble and challenges, so no different for me. I am cool with it.”Domingo said that he has had “passionate” discussions with Hassan, and claimed that there hasn’t been a case of anyone telling him or the captain that they have to report the team details to the president.”My dealings with president is very passionate about the team,” he said. “He wants the team to do really well. I haven’t spoken to him as yet. I have had some good practice sessions in the last week.”I haven’t been officially told about that I need to tell anyone about the team. I am not under any impression that I need to do it, as yet. I am as passionate about the team as the president. I am paid a salary to make decisions and do my work.”Domingo confirmed that they will continue with two seamers, as he felt there was a bit of movement during early morning training sessions in Mirpur in the last few days. “We will probably go with two seamers. I don’t think it benefits our team playing just one seamer. Three seamers would have been perfect if we had a guy who could bat at No 7. Until [Mohammad] Saifuddin is fit or we find the guy who can bat at No. 7 and bowl 10 or 15 overs a day first, we will probably go with two seamers.”There was a little bit of moisture in the nets around 10am this morning. There’s little bit of winter still around so the first 10 to 12 overs tomorrow could still be tricky. If we end up bowling first tomorrow, seamers have to be on the money. We need two seamers to exploit if there is anything on the wicket.”
