Conor Gallagher to Tottenham update as Chelsea set for crunch decision

Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on Conor Gallagher and the chances of him joining Tottenham Hotspur this summer, coming after what seems like nearly a year of Spurs links to the 24-year-old.

Spurs tipped to sign Gallagher amid Chelsea's PSR worries

Chelsea face real PSR concerns as we slowly approach the June 30 deadline for them to balance their books and avoid Premier League sanctions.

Reports suggest Chelsea may have to raise £100 million through player sales by that date, and with Gallagher's contract expiring in 2025, he's a firm candidate for the Stamford Bridge exit door despite being a key player for Mauricio Pochettino.

Gallagher's sale would go down as pure profit on Chelsea's books, given he's a product of the Cobham academy, and the notion Pochettino's side could be forced to sell has alerted club chiefs at Tottenham.

Spurs have been tipped with interest in signing Gallagher for quite some time, with reports dating as far back as last year. Tottenham's fondness for Gallagher has remained heading into the next summer window, with pundit Pat Nevin believing he would be a perfect fit.

“In an ideal world where finances are all balanced, Chelsea would absolutely not be looking to sell Conor Gallagher. I can’t imagine it, it’s unthinkable," said Nevin this week to Grosvenor Sport (via The Metro).

"Similar to when Mason Mount left. But if the finances say you need to do it then you need to do it. It may be unbelievably painful for a lot of Chelsea fans because, as someone said to me the other day, it feels like selling the family silver. Chelsea have been selling off bits of the stadium and hotels and it’s slightly discomforting but the accountants are in control really.

“You wouldn’t be surprised if he went to someone like Spurs signed Conor Gallagher, obviously that would be particularly painful for Chelsea fans. But what a player he would be for them, I’d probably say he’s better suited to Spurs, the way he plays.

“The transfer situation is really quite delicate with Chelsea because we don’t know who is making the decisions and that’s what it comes down to."

Fabrizio Romano shares Gallagher to Tottenham update

Now, respected media source Romano has shared an update on the "game-changer" and his situation for GiveMeSport.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher celebrates.

Indeed, he says Tottenham are waiting for Chelsea's final decision on Gallagher before making a move, and he adds that manager Ange Postecoglou remains an absolutely huge fan.

“Conor Gallagher remains on Tottenham’s shortlist," said Romano.

"He’s a super-appreciated player at Spurs. He’s been on Ange Postecoglou’s list since day one and has always been a player he loves. So, I think Tottenham will be there if Chelsea decide to sell the player in the summer transfer window. But for sure, Gallagher remains a player that is appreciated by Tottenham, and they’re waiting for Chelsea’s final decision on that one.”

BCA lifts suspension on Atul Bedade but removes him as Baroda Women's coach

He was suspended following allegations of sexual harassment by a few women’s cricketers

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jun-2020The Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) has lifted the suspension on Atul Bedade, the former India batsman and head coach of Baroda Women’s team, after conducting an internal inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment by a few female cricketers. The BCA, however, confirmed Bedade would not continue as the coach “considering the sensitivity of the matter”.The BCA formed a probe committee in March after issuing Bedade a suspension letter for “personal comments on physicality, comments that discourage the morale of team members, angry outbursts unbecoming of a women’s team coach, using language that is not accepted of a person in-charge, and behaviour oblivious of gender sensitivity”.The committee headed by a four-member panel – CEO Shishir Hattangadi, senior HR manager Priyanka Verma and secretaries Ajit Lele and Parag Patel – conducted a hearing with Bedade and “various stakeholders”, before making their decision public.”A preliminary inquiry was conducted by the CEO and senior manager-HR in the matter,” a BCA release stated. “During the apex committee [meeting] held on June 2, 2020, the issue was discussed and CEO and senior manager-HR were called to explain the details of investigations and their recommendations. Based on the details provided to the apex committee, it was resolved that his suspension stands withdrawn.”Bedade’s stint as Baroda Women’s coach lasted less than a year, with the one-day championship in February being his last assignment. He played 13 ODIs for India in the 1990s before getting into coaching full time.

Sheffield Wednesday will move for "fantastic" Dawson replacement this week

Sheffield Wednesday are interested in sealing the signing of a "fantastic" goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Sheffield Wednesday chase signings after survival

The Owls completed an incredible escape act in the Championship on Saturday afternoon, winning 2-0 away to Sunderland to ensure that they avoided an immediate return to League One.

It has been a stunning effort from Danny Rohl and his players, who looked doomed when the German replaced Xisco Munoz earlier in the campaign, with their end-of-season form similar to those chasing promotion.

In fact, Wednesday ended up second in the form table in the final six league matches, going to show how impressive they were when the pressure really cranked up.

The key now is for the Owls to kick on this summer and ensure that another relegation battle doesn't come their way in 2024/25. Keeping hold of the impressive Rohl is as important as anything, but equally, signing top-quality players has to be near the top of their priorities.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

The hope is that funds are available to strengthen the squad significantly, with a lack of depth and quality often seen as the reason for struggling so much in the first place this season.

Sheffield Wednesday to move for "fantastic" gem this week

Writing on his Patreon [via Sheffield Wednesday News], Nixon claimed that Sheffield Wednesday want to re-sign goalkeeper James Beadle on loan and will even get the move started this week, perhaps no surprise given Dawson is out of contract this summer: "Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday will be on to Brighton this week for keepers Carl Rushworth and James Beadle.

"The two loanees have been stand outs in the Championship and both the Swans and Owls are keen to have them for another season."

Bringing Beadle back to Wednesday in the summer transfer window is a no-brainer for Rohl, considering the positive impact he made when he arrived on loan from Brighton in January. Granted, the 19-year-old wasn't necessarily always perfect, but for a 'keeper to arrive at such a young age and do so well is testament to both his ability and his character.

He immediately ousted Dawson between the sticks, due to his superior use of the ball playing out from the back, and Rohl heaped praised on him: "He is very calm and when I look back to the Leicester game, making such a decision after four minutes. Conceding the goal, this for a young player is not easy.

"He did very well and when you look at his second half even he had good decision making passing the first pressing line. This is fantastic and it shows his quality. I think he will have a great career having worked at this level."

The hope is that Beadle eventually makes a permanent switch to Wednesday, but that could be unlikely if Brighton see him as a big part of their future, allowing him to mature out on loan before using him regularly further down the line.

Overseas trio become latest players to have county contracts cancelled

Yorkshire have announced that their three overseas signings for the 2020 season – R Ashwin, Keshav Maharaj and Nicholas Pooran – have had their contract terminated by mutual consent.Ashwin, who has previously played county cricket for Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire, had been due to play the majority of the County Championship season, while Pooran was set to re-join the club for the T20 Blast having played three times in the competition last summer. Maharaj had been due to play the first two games of the County Championship season. All professional cricket in England and Wales has been suspended until July 1 at the earliest due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and several counties have now cancelled contracts for their overseas players both as a cost-saving measure and as a reflection of the uncertainties surrounding international travel.”I really appreciate the players’ understanding in this matter,” said Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket. “We have been in regular contact with the players and their agents throughout this Covid pandemic.”They have been extremely professional and appreciate the uncertainty facing counties at present. We hope that we will be able to see them at Emerald Headingley in the future.”

Cristiano Ronaldo would have been 'worth £1bn' in his prime with Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham told they should be grateful for legendary Portuguese's Real Madrid influence

Michael Owen believes Cristiano Ronaldo could have been worth £1bn in his prime for the sporting and commercial success he delivered at Real Madrid.

Ronaldo joined Madrid for a then-world-record feeOwen thinks £500 million would be cheap for the PortugueseHailed Ronaldo's all-encompassing influence at RealWHAT HAPPENED?

In the summer of 2009, Ronaldo set sail for Madrid after Los Blancos shelled out a then world-record £80m for the forward. The rest is history, with the Portuguese netting 450 goals in 438 appearances and winning 15 trophies, including two La Liga titles, four Champions League triumphs and two Copa del Rey crowns.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

With time and a consistently inflating market, transfer fees have hit the ceiling. There have been quite a few £100m transfers in the past decade with Neymar's move to Paris Saint-Germain for £200m currently being the most expensive deal of all time.

WHAT OWEN SAID

Owen believes Ronaldo would have shattered all records if he forked out a transfer in current market conditions and even "£500 million" would have been cheap for the talismanic forward.

In an interview with Owen said: "If you look at the transfer record now of over £200 million, you’d have to say that Cristiano Ronaldo was worth more than that at Manchester United. In hindsight, for what he gives you, look at the amount of Champions League medals he's going to pretty much win you single-handedly, for the amount of shirts and the publicity and the merchandise around the world that he's going to sell.

"In hindsight, I think 500 million would be cheap. You could even double that if you look at the goals, the trophies, the shirts, and how much the clubs have benefited from having him there. How he's grown their brand, how he's won them trophies and made them all this money. So I guess if you'd said to them at that point how much he would give you for nine seasons, they might say yes to a billion pounds, forget about £80 million. £500 million would be cheap."

DID YOU KNOW?

Real Madrid splashed the cash for Jude Bellingham last summer and further reinforced their squad in 2024 by signing Kylian Mbappe after his deal expired with Paris Saint-Germain. Despite these mega signings they are in a robust financial situation and Owen believes that much of the credit goes to Ronaldo.

"Since he (Ronaldo) played for Real Madrid they’ve thrown hundreds and hundreds of millions on the new stadium, they are in a great financial position," he said. "They're paying all this money to Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham – a lot of this will have been off the back of the success of Cristiano Ronaldo."

Test cricket to prop up launch of 10th edition of Big Bash

Cricket’s oldest format is to be used as a launchpad for its newer offspring, after Big Bash League chief Alistair Dobson candidly admitted the decision to start the 10th edition of the tournament as early as December 3 had much to do with giving it the helpful lead-in of Australia’s first Test against India at the Gabba that same week. After a period of more than 40 years in which cricket’s shorter formats – ODIs and then domestic T20 – have come to be seen as bankrollers for the traditional game played overs five days in whites, the recently ailing fortunes of the BBL have turned this notion on its head, with CA hoping to kickstart the T20 competition by running its launch off the back of the Brisbane Test.CA and the BBL clubs are increasingly desperate to find a way to get the tournament trending back up again in terms of broadcast viewers and crowds, with 2020-21 marking the halfway point of a six-year, A$1.18 billion deal with Seven and Fox Sports for which around half the value was drawn from an optimistic picture of how the BBL might grow.ALSO READ: WBBL to feature three-week Sydney hub amid Covid-19 contingenciesThis scheduling decision more or less answers the question of why the Gabba won out over Perth Stadium for the first match of the series against India, despite inferior facilities and seemingly a less helpful time slot for the vast subcontinental broadcast audience. A Perth Test would have finished too late for an ideal broadcast slot for BBL openers on the eastern side of the country, beginning with the Adelaide Strikers facing the Melbourne Renegades at Adelaide Oval on the Friday night after Tim Paine tosses the coin opposite Virat Kohli at the Gabba.Rashid Khan races off after claiming his hat-trick•Getty Images

“That fast start off the back of that first Test at the Gabba is going to be huge,” Dobson said. “All our numbers from a TV point of view suggest that BBL games off the back of Test matches are really strong. Our clubs have really bought into the idea of a really creative and innovative week of matches where we’ve got a home game for every club in those first eight, it presents some really interesting opportunities for us to work with our players and clubs around a theme and events.”That said, it also allows us to create a powerful core part of the BBL season in that central school holiday period with a run of prime-time matches and a spread of home games. BBL09 was full of highlights, there were a number of things that impacted our season that were out of our control. Innovation and entertainment are really important things for us to work towards for this season and if we can deliver on those things we’re on track to have a great BBL, inevitably with some bumps in the road to come.”All seven of Adelaide Oval’s Big Bash League fixtures will play out in prime-time evening slots in one of the standout features of a fixture list that has lengthened the 10th edition of the tournament to 65 days to appease broadcasters while also creating more room to move amid the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the chief complaints about last summer’s BBL was a proliferation of afternoon matches to squeeze the tournament’s 56 regular season games into a tighter window, with the Strikers suffering one of the biggest drop offs in terms of attendances due to getting far more early starts compared to Melbourne and Sydney in particular.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

However, the schedule for the 2020-21 tournament, subject to changes forced by Covid-19, has created room for the vast majority of matches to be played at night, with only eight earlier starts on double header days this time around – of those, only two matches start any earlier than 5pm eastern daylight time. As part of the carve up between broadcast rights holders Fox Sports and Seven, the pay TV network will get exclusive access to 10 evening matches.Among other changes, the regional component of last season’s fixture has been stripped back considerably after complaints from broadcasters about costs, while the problematic nature of the pre-Christmas period has been underlined by the use of the boutique-sized Junction Oval for a match between the Melbourne Stars and Adelaide Strikers on December 20. Dobson confirmed that CA would not be shifting from a 61-game tournament during the current broadcast deal with Fox Sports and Seven, lest it open up a negotiation that could only lead to a rights fee discount.”I know the length or the number of games is a topic people like to talk about, but we think the way we’ve set it up this year is really strong and people will be really engaged with the competition,” Dobson said. “Absolutely our commitment is to get all 61 games away and we’ve got a schedule that we think gives us the best chance to do that, but there is a whole range of scenario planning around making sure all the different options are considered.”We’ve got nothing but admiration for the way the footy codes have been able to adapt [to Covid], and we’re learning a lot from them and learning a lot from our broadcast partners, who are in the thick of it at the moment as well.”Issues around overseas players remain to be resolved, while a raft of other in-game tweaks will be formally announced by CA in coming weeks. “The prospect of bringing overseas players into both the WBBL and BBL is really important to those leagues,” Dobson said. “So we’re working really closely with internal experts to make sure the protocols and relevant exemptions and processes are in place. We’re optimistic of having overseas players part of both competitions again and there are a number of things we’ve got in place to give ourselves the best shot to do that.”Flexibility is going to be the key word. The ability for clubs to bring replacement overseas players in is obviously going to be more challenging on a short-term basis than it has in the past, the key is that we have to be really planned and organised. The list management strategies for clubs need to be in place ahead of time and we’re confident we’ll get the players in that we think are important to the league.”

"World-class" £200,000-a-week Liverpool star "has offers" for shock move

It's officially farewell season at Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp the biggest exit of the lot in between Joel Matip's and Thiago Alcantara's departures as free agents this summer, and we could see a shock move emerge in the coming months.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds' final game of the Premier League season is certainly set to be an emotional one up against Wolverhampton Wanderers, no matter the result. The day will be focused on Klopp's final goodbye at Anfield after an incredible nine-year tenure in which he won every major trophy on offer. That said, away from Klopp, Thiago and Matip will also be leaving, perhaps thinking about what might have been had the pair stayed fit throughout their stays.

Whilst Klopp is likely to take a break from football, however, Thiago is far from done. At 33 years old, the Spaniard has one final move left in him as he looks to put an end to his injury troubles away from Anfield this summer. And that could even result in a shock move.

Liverpool send scouts to watch "fantastic" star against Koopmeiners

Koopmeiners has been linked but it seems the Reds were eyeing someone else…

ByTom Cunningham May 17, 2024

According to Lu Martin on Spanish show Carrusel Deportivo, Thiago has offers from within the Premier League, as well as La Liga club Girona. The journalist said: “Thiago Alcantara does not renew with Liverpool. Girona is a possibility, but I think they have an offer from Betis to return to Spain and he has offers to continue in England.”

Liverpool midfielder Thiago.

It would be quite the shock if Thiago took his reported £200k-a-week salary elsewhere in the Premier League after his time at Liverpool and there's no doubt it would be quite the blow for the Reds if they had to come against a player of his calibre finally in full flight.

Injuries controlled "world-class" Thiago's Liverpool career

Not a single person at Anfield would have ever doubted Thiago's talent. The former Bayern Munich midfielder is as elegant as they come when fit, but there lies the issue. Thiago rarely managed to maintain his availability for long enough periods to really make an impact on Klopp's Liverpool side, with this season highlighting that more than ever. The Spaniard, with one game left this season, has made just one appearance in a frustrating end to his time at the club.

Klopp is one of those at Liverpool who have been left wondering what might have been when it comes to Thiago, saying in his final press conference: "Thiago, world-class player. In a different world I would love to see the career without injuries, he can do things I didn't think was possible. In control of everything but the body didn't play its part. I told them both thank you. Whoever is leaving are all brilliant."

Now set to move on, the midfielder will hopefully avoid injury issues at his next club, which could even be in the Premier League.
