Caleb Jewell shines for Tasmania with a maiden Shield century against Queensland

Left-hander eclipsed his previous top score of 52 making an unbeaten century to hold Queensland at bay on the opening day

Alex Malcolm17-Feb-2021Caleb Jewell produced a coming of age performance to post his maiden Sheffield Shield century and help guide Tasmania through a challenging opening day against Queensland in Hobart.Jewell, 23, playing his first Shield match in 18 months, made a brilliant 131 not out, when the next highest score was just 27, to help Tasmania edge towards 300 at the close of the opening day after they were sent into bat.He had previously scored just 139 runs in his first 13 Shield innings, at an average of just 11.58 with one half-century between 2016 and 2019. But he had earned a recall after scoring five centuries for North Hobart in Tasmania Premier Cricket this season and continued his rich vein of form.Jewell entered in the 14th over with the Tigers struggling at 2 for 39 after Charlie Wakim and Mac Wright had fallen cheaply. The left-hander played with a fluency that none of his teammates could match scoring off both feet through all parts of the ground. He struck 19 fours and one six and never got bogged down against the Queensland attack.Queensland were missing Michael Neser and Mitchell Swepson through injury but still bowled steadily to put the Tigers under pressure on a surface with plenty of grass on it. Xavier Bartlett and Brendan Doggett picked up two wickets each while Matthew Kuhnemann claimed Australia’s Test captain Tim Paine as his first wicket in first-class cricket, forcing a return catch with some nice loop and drop.Tasmania were 5 for 177 when Paine fell and then 6 for 226 when Beau Webster departed, but Jewell controlled the last 24 overs of the day with the help of Jarrod Freeman and Nathan Ellis to lay a strong foundation for day two.

Romano: Everton agree deal to sign £9,000-a-week player after Lindstrom

Everton are closing in on their fourth signing of the summer as they look to hand manager Sean Dyche a side able to avoid relegation from the Premier League once more this season.

Everton sign Jesper Linsdtrom

Following their Premier League survival last season despite two points deductions for breaching financial fair play regulations, Everton are hoping to be a little more comfortable this time around.

Dyche's side have already made a number of new additions this summer, with Jesper Lindstrom the latest arrival. The Danish international arrived on loan from Napoli in a deal which includes an option to buy the 24-year-old at the end of the season.

“I feel very good. It’s amazing to represent Everton. This is a big club, with big history, a good stadium and, as I’ve seen, very good facilities as well. I’m very, very happy to be here and I feel like this is a good fit," Lindstrom explained to Everton's official club media.

“I am 100 per cent ready. I’m so hungry. This pre-season feels long because I just want to play football, I just want to be out there in the stadium. Last year was a tough year for me but I’m so happy to be here now and I can’t wait to get started."

Dyche already has an upgrade on £50k-p/w Everton star who could be sold

The Toffees are still looking to offload numerous first-team players.

He joins striker Ilman Ndiaye in the new arrivals at Goodison Park, with the striker having been signed from Marseille as the Toffees look to bolster their attack, with Dyche's side managing the third-fewest goals in the division in the 2023-24 campaign.

Further back, they have also signed central midfielder Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa, though both Lewis Dobbin and Amadou Onana have headed to Villa Park in the time since his arrival on Merseyside. And they are closing in on another new face.

Everton set to sign defender

Now, it has emerged that the Toffees are on the verge of signing Republic of Ireland international Jake O'Brien from Lyon, with a fee agreed with the French side and talks taking place over personal terms.

That is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who claims that the club have a "deal in principle" agreed with Lyon and that O'Brien is "ready to accept the five-year contract offered".

The 23-year-old still has three years left on his £9,000-a-week deal at Lyon, having only left the Premier League for France 12 months ago. However, his performances last season caught the eye and have convinced the Toffees to part ways with around £22m to bring him to Goodison Park.

Already a regular for the Republic of Ireland, he has drawn praise from former manager John O'Shea, who hailed his "brilliant" rise.

"It’s been brilliant to see what he has done in the last year to 18 months, establishing himself in a top-flight league. It’s been brilliant to see. There’s great competition in that area of the pitch. He’ll have lots of competition but it’s great for us, and me being part of the defensive camp shall we say, that we can help him improve even further over the two games coming up", O'Shea said via Extra.

Now he is looking set to take another step as he heads to Goodison Park.

Southampton "keen" to strike loan deal for "special" Liverpool youngster

Southampton are one of a number of clubs who are interested in completing the loan signing of a "special" Liverpool teenager who has been compared to Wayne Rooney, according to a new update from reliable journalist James Pearce.

Southampton transfer news

Saints still need to complete more business between now and the end of the summer transfer window, with Villarreal and Chile striker Ben Brereton Diaz seen as a strong target. In fact, a £7m fee has reportedly been agreed, as they look to seal an impressive addition.

Crystal Palace youngster Jesurun Rak-Sakyi has also emerged as a rumoured target for Southampton, with the youngster seen as an attacking player with lots of potential. Still only 21 years of age, the Eagles may be keen to keep hold of him, though, especially having already lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich earlier this window.

The future of Celtic attacking midfielder Matt O'Riley is still up in the air, too, and while a move to Atalanta feels the most likely outcome this summer, Saints have been mentioned as possible suitors. The Dane was superb for the Hoops last season, registering 31 goal contributions (18 goals and 13 assists) in the Scottish Premiership, helping his side clinch the league and Scottish Cup double in the process.

Meanwhile, Southampton have already completed the double signing of young pair Welington and Juan from Brazilian side Sao Paulo, with the duo arriving next January after signing pre-contract deals.

Southampton keen on signing "special" ace

According to Pearce on X, Southampton are interested in signing Liverpool winger Ben Doak on loan this summer, but they aren't alone in expressing a willingness to snap him up:

Doak is an incredibly exciting talent who could be such an eye-catching temporary addition for Saints this summer, possessing blistering pace out wide, as well as an ability to both cut inside or hit the byline. At 18, the Scot is understandably still a raw footballer whose end product needs some work, but former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer.

"Ben Doak, obviously nice signs, he’s with us in training again. Special boy, really confident, has something nobody else delivers really, this kind of dribbling, this kind of straight-forward bravery, all these kind of things."

Doak has also been compared to Rooney in the past, in terms of his stocky build and fearless style of play, and while Russell Martin may not see him as a starter in every game, given his age, he has the potential to be such an effective squad option for a year, affecting games as a substitute with his directness and trickery.

Nottingham Forest now chasing £16k-p/w ace dubbed "the new Zinedine Zidane"

Nottingham Forest have made contact to sign a new midfielder this summer as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of the new Premier League season, it has been reported.

Nottingham Forest face kind opening fixtures

After facing Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City in their opening run of the 2023/24 campaign, Nuno Espírito Santo's side have been handed much kinder fixtures to kick off the 2024/25 Premier League season.

The Garibaldi kick off the campaign at the City Ground against Bournemouth, who are in the process of selling their star striker to Tottenham. That is followed by a trip to newly promoted Southampton before a Midlands derby against Wolves, who have also sold two of their key figures this summer.

Trips to Liverpool, Chelsea and Brighton follow as well as home ties with Crystal Palace and Fulham, but unlike 12 months ago, there is a chance for Forest to build some real early momentum in the campaign and pull well clear of the drop zone, something that they only managed to avoid on the final day of last season.

The easier start to the season will also give Forest time to assess their squad and add new faces to it between now and the transfer deadline on August 30th, with reports suggesting that several more signings could yet arrive at the City Ground before the window slams shut. Now, they have been linked with a move to sign a man once tipped to be going to the very top.

Nottingham Forest chase £12m Milan man

That comes with reports in Italy claiming that Nottingham Forest are one of a trio of Premier League sides chasing AC Milan midfielder Yacine Adli ahead of the transfer window closing.

The Frenchman came through the ranks at PSG before Bordeaux snapped him up, only for Milan to come calling for his services two years later. Now 24-years-old, he has not lived up to his early potential yet, where he was considered by some to be the next big thing in French football.

Adli’s former Bordeaux Manager Paulo Sousa dubbed him “the new Zinedine Zidane for his technical qualities” during his time with the now fourth-tier side.

But now the Frenchman, who is yet to be capped at senior international level, is down to the final two years of his £16,000 a week deal at San Siro, and has started just one pre-season friendly under new boss Paulo Fonseca, leading reports in Italy to suggest that he is no longer wanted in Milan.

Bid sent: Nottingham Forest make offer to sign "special" £47k-p/w defender

He is wanted by clubs across the Premier League.

ByBen Browning Aug 9, 2024

The Premier League is a different matter though; they claim that Brentford have already approached the Rossoneri over a potential deal, while Nottingham Forest and Leicester City have also made contact for his services.

He would not be an expensive risk to take, with AC Milan reportedly setting his price tag at a "negotiable €14m" (£12m), which could prove excellent value for money should any side finally be able to extract his much promised talent out of him.

Spurs seal £65 million deal for Dominic Solanke

The big news out of Spurs this week is their completed £65 million deal for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke, with manager Ange Postecoglou landing his top target for the role.

Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham are eyeing £12 million ace alongside Solanke

The Lilywhites are looking to shore up more key positions.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 8, 2024

The Australian, according to reliable journalist David Ornstein, wanted the 26-year-old more than any other striker in the club's price range – coming after he scored 21 goals in all competitions for the Cherries last season.

Spurs moved quickly to negotiate a big-money deal this week, after receiving encouragement that Solanke was very keen on a move to Tottenham this summer.

The Englishman is now all set for a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the Lilywhites paying £57 million up front and £8 million worth of add-ons to reach the total sum of Solanke's £65 million release clause (Fabrizio Romano).

After Solanke, some outlets have reported that Tottenham are in talks to bring in a new winger and full-back, so this could be a busy final few weeks of the window for Postecoglou, Lange and chairman Daniel Levy.

There is also the matter of Emerson Royal and his move to AC Milan. The Brazilian, after months of talk, will at long last seal a move to the San Siro. According to Romano, he rejected four to five different offers to join Milan, with Spurs now reaching an agreement to sell him for a package worth in excess of £13 million.

"Emerson Royal to AC Milan, here we go! Deal in place for total package in excess of €15m from Spurs," said Romano on X yesterday.

"Agreement with Emerson reached in May as he only wanted Milan despite 4/5 proposals. Travel being planned as Emerson leaves #THFC and joins Milan project."

Tottenham considering Walker-Peters to replace Emerson

Of course, with the 25-year-old now making a move to Serie A, Postecoglou is in need of a different alternative to star right-back Pedro Porro. Emerson also featured at left-back at points last season, so Spurs need to bring in a full-back option who can cover for both Porro and Destiny Udogie.

Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters

According to The Boot Room, Southampton star and former player Kyle Walker-Peters remains on their radar. It is believed Tottenham are still considering a move for Walker-Peters, with other reports suggesting the club have a £30 million buy-back clause.

The Englishman, who has been called a "beautiful" footballer by Russell Martin, starred for the Saints on their run to Premier League promotion last season.

Copa do Brasil

Agora, o Athletico deixa de lado o Brasileirão e volta a focar na Copa do Brasil, onde na próxima quarta-feira encara o Flamengo, no Maracanã.

Contact made: Celtic move for "fantastic" £60,000-p/w Premier League winner

Celtic have turned their attentions to a former Premier League winner as they look to bolster their ranks before the transfer window shuts this summer, according to reports.

Bhoys off to a winning start

Brendan Rodgers' side kicked off their Scottish Premiership defence with a 4-0 thrashing of Kilmarnock courtesy of goals from Reo Hatate, Liam Scales, Nicolas Kuhn and Anthony Ralston. It was a result that gave them a head start on last season's challengers Rangers already, with the Ibrox side having been held to a 0-0 draw by Hearts in their opener.

£15k-p/w midfielder keen to leave billionaire club for Celtic this summer

He could be an excellent signing for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

ByBen Browning Aug 9, 2024

But Rodgers knows that his side cannot rest in the transfer market, especially with significant speculation continuing to surround star midfielder Matt O'Riley amid interest from European Champions Atalanta and Premier League clubs Chelsea, West Ham and Southampton.

So far, the Bhoys have welcomed just three new players this summer, two of which are goalkeepers and the last of whom is Paulo Bernardo, whose loan move from last season was made permanent. But movement is expected before the end of the summer.

"We still have work to do. In transfers, there's always moving parts, it's never as easy as just seeing a player and bringing him in. But I would hope by the end of August we would have the team set up how we would've wanted it, because it's so important", Rodgers explained.

"We want to ensure that we have an improved squad this season in order to take on all the challenges that we have."

Now, reports have emerged linking Celtic with a move for a Premier League player this summer.

Celtic eye up Premier League winner who is for sale

That comes with Sky Sports revealing that Celtic have made an enquiry for Crystal Palace midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp as they look to add depth to their midfield.

The versatile midfielder was part of the Leicester City side that lifted the Premier League title alongside Kasper Schmeichel in 2016, but has spent the last seven seasons with Crystal Palace. In that time, he has racked up 231 games for the Eagles, contributing 19 goals and 15 assists and being played across a whole host of different roles.

The Ghana international made 29 appearances in the 2023-24 campaign, but just 17 of those were starts and his last start came at the beginning of February, a fortnight before Oliver Glasner took over at Selhurst Park.

Glasner did single him out for praise towards the end of the campaign after he rescued a point for his side against Fulham however: "We know Jeffrey has a fantastic finish, we see it in training", he explained after the game."

Now into the final 12 months of his £60,000 a week deal, Sky Sports report that the 31-year-old is "available for sale" this summer and Celtic are thought to be keen on adding him to their ranks, though no fee has been mentioned.

Though now perhaps beyond his peak years, Schlupp's addition on a short term deal could be a perfect stop gap for Brendan Rodgers and co. as they look to challenge across multiple fronts once more this season.
