Time’s up: Spurs can finally axe Dragusin by signing "immense" £68m star

The unpredictable nature of Tottenham Hotspur’s form this season continues to be a problem for Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian’s side dismantled an incredibly talented Aston Villa outfit last Sunday, but fell to a 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray during the week and lost to Ipswich Town on the weekend.

The Tractor Boys were still without a Premier League victory heading into the game, and while they have some talented players in their side, they were massive underdogs.

Yet, the North Londoners managed to fall apart totally, and while there were plenty of poor performances across the board, one player once again stood out for the wrong reasons, a player who has become a real liability this season: Radu Dragusin.

Dragusin's dreadful form

Yes, arguably the worst player on the pitch yesterday afternoon was Romanian centre-back Dragusin, and while a poor performance here or there is forgivable, it’s not been just one bad performance from the 22-year-old this year.

He’s made nine appearances for the team so far, and while he did look quite good against Villa and Manchester City, he’s generally looked out of his depth in defence.

For example, Spurs writer Alasdair Gold awarded the defender just a 3/10 match rating for his performance on Sunday, a 3/10 for his display against Galatasaray during the week, and a paltry 6/10 against Championship side Coventry City in September.

Moreover, he started in the defeat to Newcastle United earlier in the season and got himself sent off early in the game against Qarabağ, only for his teammates to save his skin by taking their chances in front of goal.

Lastly, his underlying numbers aren’t all that impressive, with FBref ranking him in just the top 41% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues for blocks, the top 43% for clearances, the top 45% for interceptions, the bottom 42% for passes completed and the bottom 13% for tackles, all per 90.

In all, the former Genoa ace isn’t doing enough to justify his position as Postecoglou’s third-choice centre-back, but the good news is that recent reports have linked the North Londoners with someone who could be the dream upgrade.

Spurs' dream Dragusin upgrade

Now, there are plenty of promising defenders out there at the moment, but according to a report from the Boot Room late last week, Spurs are incredibly keen on Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

The report claims that the North Londoners see the 20-year-old as a potential long-term replacement for Cristian Romero should the Argentine leave the club in the near future.

However, given the interest from other top teams such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, confirmed in the story, they’d do well to act on their interest as soon as possible, regardless of what happens to Romero, as the Ivorian could replace Dragusin instead.

That said, it’s a move that would cost Daniel Levy and Co a pretty penny, as according to the report, the “immense” centre-back, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has a release clause of £68m. While that’s a seriously significant amount, it could prove value for money down the line.

For example, despite being so young, the Abidjan-born titan has made 69 appearances for the Portuguese giants and played a crucial role in their league triumph last season.

Moreover, the 6 foot 3 “leader”, as dubbed by Portuguese football writer Kevin Fernandes, has become a crucial member of the Côte d’Ivoire national team, earning eight senior caps so far and starting two games in their Africa Cup of Nations winning campaign this year.

Lastly, when we directly compare the former Midtjylland prospect’s underlying numbers to Dragusin’s, there is only one winner.

For example, while the Sporting ace comes out second best in a couple of metrics such as progressive passes and blocks, he comes out way ahead in most others, including non-penalty expected goals plus assists, passing accuracy, shot and goal-creating actions, tackles and tackles won, interceptions, errors leading to a shot, ball recoveries and aerial duels won, all per 90.

Ultimately, Dragusin has shown his talent in glimpses, but it is clear that he’s not up to the standard Spurs or Postecoglou require. Therefore, Levy and Co should do what they can to sign Diomande in 2025 before someone else does.

Who Ange Postecoglou could axe after Tottenham win over West Ham

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou could be set to axe a big-name player from his starting XI, according to an ex-recruitment expert who still has real connections within the beautiful game.

Tottenham 4-1 West Ham as Postecoglou returns to winning ways

Following their dismal 3-2 defeat away to Brighton, which Postecoglou admitted was the “worst” loss of his tenure, Spurs put London rivals West Ham to the sword with a memorable 4-1 domination of their neighbours at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Mohammed Kudus briefly opened the scoring for West Ham, giving Postecoglou and supporters inside the stadium a real scare, but it didn’t take long for star forward Dejan Kulusevski to equalise and maintain his exceptional start to the new Premier League season.

Level at half-time, Spurs surged after the restart, taking a 4-1 lead inside the space of ten minutes. Yves Bissouma, an own goal from Alphonse Areola and Son Heung-min’s strike handed the home side a three-goal cushion just before the hour mark – with Julen Lopetegui distraught over the Hammers’ capitulation.

Kudus was sent off a few minutes from full-time, cementing West Ham’s misery over a second period to forget. Postecoglou’s delight at his team’s response after the Brighton game was evident in his press conference, where he praised supporters for helping to lift the team.

“It’s important for our fans for sure because these are the games they want to feel good about and win obviously,” said Postecoglou’s on Tottenham’s 4-1 win over West Ham.

“Personally for me any game we win I get equal joy out of it as I’ve always said. Part of the kind of momentum we built in the second half came through the edge the supporters gave us, especially after the second goal you could really feel the atmosphere inside the stadium lift and that pushed us along and we had a 15-20min spell where we were outstanding.

“It goes hand in hand. We need the supporters especially at home to provide but to be able to provide we need to give them something in return. Today is hopefully a little bit of a reward for our fans.”

Kulusevski earned the plaudits against West Ham after another superb all-round display, but the same cannot be said for James Maddison, who was hooked at half-time in favour of Pape Matar Sarr.

James Maddison facing Tottenham axe

The £170,000-per-week Maddison actually got the assist for Kulusevski’s equaliser, though Postecoglou’s side arguably looked more threatening after the England international was subbed off, which showed in the scoreline.

Speaking to Football Insider, former recruitment expert Mick Brown, who remains well-connected in the Premier League, says that he’s “heard” Maddison could be axed from Tottenham’s starting elevens on a regular basis.

I appreciate what James Maddison can do,” said Brown.

“But it’s almost as if the game has to be run for his benefit, whereas the elite players in his position put their stamp on the game and dictate the way it’s played. If it’s a 50/50 battle of a game, he can go missing. From what I’ve heard, the manager could look to drop him from the starting XI from time to time. He won’t be afraid of making big calls and that is one that he may have to make.

“Postecoglou will be looking at who they’re playing against, and will change his system to suit the game. Maddison might be able to take advantage of teams that are weaker in midfield, for example, but in games like the one at the weekend they can leave him out.

“We saw against West Ham the difference that dropping him out of the side can make, and I’d expect to see that on a more regular basis now.”

Aston Villa eyeing highly rated Man Utd gem if Amorim signs a replacement

Aston Villa are plotting a shock transfer swoop for a “highly regarded” defender, according to a new report. The Villans have been very busy in the last few transfer windows, and it appears as though they could be active once again when January arrives, as Unai Emery tries to compete in the Premier League and in the Champions League.

Aston Villa rival Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea to sign £5m-a-year free agent

Emery could be about to improve his strike force, as Aston Villa are willing to match the player’s demands.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 13, 2024 Aston Villa transfer news

Emery’s side is currently in a rough patch of form, as they’ve lost their last four games in all competitions, form that has seen them lose ground in the Premier League. Villa will be looking to get back to winning ways after the international break, but this run may have also opened their eyes to what they need to strengthen when January comes.

Villa have always been busy in transfer markets under Emery, and that may not be changing anytime soon, as the Midlands side are interested in signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Chelsea. The midfielder has been with the Blues since the summer, but it has been a frustrating time as he’s struggled for game time, and that has put his future in doubt heading into the New Year.

As well as Dewsbury-Hall, Villa are reportedly prepared to meet the demands of striker Jonathan David. The 24-year-old looks set to leave Lille at the end of the campaign as a free agent, and Villa are among the host of teams interested in signing him. The transfer talk doesn’t stop there for the Villans either, as they also have their eye on a very promising young defender.

Aston Villa plotting swoop for Man Utd gem

According to TEAMtalk, Aston Villa are interested in signing Manchester United defender Harry Amass. The 17-year-old left-back came through the academy at Watford but was picked up by the Red Devils in 2023 after putting in some very impressive displays.

Amass, who is described as being “highly regarded” in this report, played for United’s under-18s last season but has now been promoted to the club’s under-21s. The left-back has yet to make an appearance in the first team, but he has been named in several matchday squads and appeared heavily in their pre-season tour of the USA in the summer.

This report states that Villa are long-term admirers of Amass, as they tried to sign the player from Watford before United did. They have kept an eye on Amass’ development, as he’s tipped for a very bright future.

The teenager is said to be on the cusp of breaking into the first team but has yet to play for United despite injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. And while the Red Devils apparently want to keep him, the fact they are in the market for a new left-back could open the door for Villa to swoop in to try and hijack him.

Amass is under contract at United until 2027, and any interest from Villa or elsewhere would not be welcomed by the Red Devils, but Villa are keeping an eye on his situation.

Forget Cunha: Wolves’ "tenacious" star could be their next big-money sale

It has been an incredibly tough season for Wolverhampton Wanderers so far. They are 17th in the Premier League and have just nine points to their name. This has, unsurprisingly, put pressure on manager Gary O’Neil, although that has somewhat lifted after the last couple of games.

Wins for the Old Gold have been like London buses in 2024/25. They went ten games without a victory, and have since won their next two on the bounce. Southampton were the first team they beat, overcoming them 2-0, before a fantastic 4-1 thrashing over Fulham at Craven Cottage sealed three points once more.

The star of the show in both of those games and, indeed, all season, has been Matheus Cunha.

Cunha’s stats in 2024/25

It has been an extraordinary campaign so far for Cunha, despite Wolves’ dire performances for the majority of the season. The Brazilian has scored seven goals and has three assists to his name in 12 appearances to date.

Cunha

The last four games have seen the Old Gold attacker go on a simply incredible run of form. He has scored four goals and registered three assists. That includes two goals and an assist away to the Cottagers last time out.

Cunha’s numbers are on a whole new level this season. He had 12 goals and seven assists to his name in 32 top-flight games in 2023/24 but is already just nine goal involvements away from that tally after 12 appearances.

As per FBref, he is one of just 18 players in the entirety of Europe’s big five leagues to have double figures for domestic goal involvements and one of six in the Premier League.

One of the most impressive things about the Brazilian attacker is his versatility. This season, O’Neil has played him in five different positions across the front line, and he has registered a goal or assist in three of them. He is an incredibly adaptable player.

Whilst Cunha is arguably the Old Gold’s best player, he might not end up being their next big sale. The Midlands club will no doubt do everything they can to keep hold of him and instead might sell another Brazilian in the squad first.

Wolves’ next major sale

The player in question here is Joao Gomes. Although the 23-year-old versatile midfielder does not have the same impact as Cunha from a goal involvements perspective, he is a key player for O’Neil.

This term, the young warrior has started all 12 times in the Premier League for the Midlands club and has managed to get on the scoresheet twice, grabbing an assist too, including one of each against Fulham.

If there is one thing that can be said about the Brazil international, it is that he is a fantastic ball-winner, having been described as “tenacious” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig. According to Squawka, Gomes has won 5.6 ground duels and makes an average of 5.6 ball recoveries per game this term.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes vs Arsenal

Interestingly, those numbers, like several of his other defensive stats, stack up well against Rodri’s 2023/24 stats.

The Ballon d’Or winner is undoubtedly one of the finest midfielders on the planet, and last season won 4.5 ground duels and made 7.2 ball recoveries per game. They really are similar statistically, showing Gomes’ quality.

There were reports over summer that the £30k per week star was a target for Manchester United. The Manchester Evening News reported in early August that the Red Devils were interested in the Wolves number eight, and said he had a value of £38m.

That is a sale that could certainly be considered the Old Gold’s next big departure. Not only would they be losing a key player, but they would be doubling their money, after signing him for £15m in January 2023.

Wolves will surely want to do everything in their power to keep hold of Gomes, but with the likes of United showing previous interest, they might not be able to keep hold of him for much longer.

While West Ham are getting compensation over Fullkrug, this situation is a prime example of the toll international football can take on Premier League clubs, and his injury is still costing the east Londoners dearly in a financial sense as well as on the field.

Niclas Fullkrug for West Ham

“They will still be covering most of Fullkrug’s wages,” said finance expert Stefan Borson to Football Insider recently.

“Pep talks about this quite a lot – the condition of players coming back from international duty, and the number of players injured on international duty.

“It’s an interesting subject. I don’t really understand how it happens, but often a player will come back with quite a serious injury.

“The clubs then have to pick up the pieces, because they’re paying the wages. West Ham will be getting some form of compensation from Fifa, but they’ll have to deal with the majority of the problem.”

Amid the ex-Werder Bremen star’s struggles, reports have even suggested that Lopetegui is urging West Ham chiefs to sign a new striker, as the Spaniard looks to bolster his options with Michail Antonio and Danny Ings also out of contract next year.

West Ham eyeing rising Greek star Stefanos Tzimas

According to The Boot Room, Steidten and co have a wonderkid on their radar for the role – PAOK striker Stefanos Tzimas.

The 18-year-old is currently impressing on loan at German second division side FC Nurnberg – scoring five goals and assisting one more in eight appearances across all competitions so far – and this has alerted Hammers chiefs.

It is believed West Ham are now eyeing a move for Tzimas, who’s PAOK contract includes a £15 million release clause, with the teenager even branded one of Greek’s most promising young stars right now.

“Tzimas is one of the greatest talents in Greek football,” wrote newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, as quoted by The Boot Room.

Australia call-up Grace Harris after Beth Mooney's injury

Grace Harris will replace injured batter Beth Mooney, called into Australia’s Ashes squad hours out from the series opener in Adelaide.Harris was confirmed as Mooney’s replacement on Thursday, added ahead of Elyse Villani and Georgia Redmayne for the T20 matches. Her call up is a further sign Australia will opt for a specialist opener alongside Alyssa Healy, after Mooney was struck in the jaw at training earlier this week. The world’s top-ranked T20 batter has since undergone surgery, with Australian officials unsure how long she will be out. Rachael Haynes had loomed as a likely option to replace Mooney, but selectors have indicated they want her to play in the middle order.Related

She made 50 and 15 in a warm-up match for Australia A against Australia earlier this week, convincing selectors she was the woman for the job.”Whilst the injury to Beth is unfortunate it does provide an opportunity for someone else to step in to the squad,” chief selector Shawn Flegler said. “Grace has a great skill set for the T20 format and has the ability to play multiple roles if required.”
