Deal progressing: Man Utd now in talks to sign new £900k-p/y ace for Amorim

Manchester United are now progressing with a deal to sign a new defender for Ruben Amorim this month, it has been reported, with the club keen to improve their ranks for the second half of the campaign.

Manchester United lose again as INEOS turn to January market

A 3-1 Premier League loss to Brighton at Old Trafford was the sixth in just 11 games for Ruben Amorim since his arrival, and left the club 13th in the top flight, just ten points clear of the relegation zone.

While relegation seems overwhelmingly unlikely, the 11 point gap to the final European places for next season also seems to be growing with each week, and barring an impressive Europa League run it seems likely that the Red Devils will be without any European football for the 2025/26 campaign.

A mammoth overhaul is likely to take place in the summer, with Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof all out of contract while the likes of Casemiro, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia have all been strongly linked with moves away from the club either this month or in the summer.

One player already on his way out is Brazilian winger Antony, who is set to bring his awful spell at Old Trafford to a close and seal a loan move to Spanish side Real Betis in the coming days, while more exits could well follow in the final days of the transfer window.

To combat that, the Red Devils are also looking at strengthening their own ranks, and are now moving forward with a deal for a versatile new defender for Amorim.

Manchester United open talks over Lecce star

Now, the reliable David Ornstein has revealed that the Red Devils are opening talks over a deal to sign exciting fullback talent Patrick Dorgu from Lecce this month.

An in demand talent, Dorgu has at various times in the last 12 months been linked with all of Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea, but it seems that United are trying to make a move a reality for the versatile Dane, who can play on either flank both as a full-back or winger.

"Sensational" £59m Man Utd star agrees personal terms to join new club

He was dubbed an “elite team player” with “immense physicality” by one analyst, and has demonstrated his versatility this campaign for the Serie A outfit, having spent much of it on the right wing despite primarily being a left-back.

As per Ornstein, “discussions have begun” and “nothing is yet agreed, but dialogue is progressing” over a deal to sign the defender this month, while Fabrizio Romano adds some good news that Dorgu is “100% keen on move” and that Lecce are holding out for €40m (£34m), a fee that is considered relatively cheap by comparison to the likes of Nuno Mendes, Rayan Ait Nouri and Milos Kerkez, who Manchester United have also considered.

Still just 20-years-old, Dorgu would certainly be a smart signing for the Red Devils given his physical prowess, while he is well-adjusted to playing in a back three/five having done so for both club and country to good effect.

Equally, his wages would not be too high, with Dorgu having signed a new deal on October but still only taking home £900,000 a year (£10.5k per week) as things stand. Even with a hefty bump to those terms, he would be among Manchester United’s lowest earners.

Should he prove a success, he could well be the long term answer to the clubs left back issues alongside Diego Leon, who is expected to arrive in the coming months.

Steven Patterson steps down as Yorkshire captain ahead of club departure

Yorkshire skipper Steve Patterson has announced that he is stepping down as captain and will leave the club at the end of the season. The 38-year-old, who has spent 18 years as a first-team cricketer at Headingley told his teammates after their seven-wicket defeat to Hampshire at Scarborough and the news was made public soon afterwards.”It’s been an honour and a privilege to captain the club for the past five seasons,” Patterson said. “I would like to thank those who entrusted me with the position, my teammates for always getting behind me, and the members and supporters for their unwavering support. I would like to assure you that I’ve never taken the position for granted, and I’ve always given my very best in the interests of the team.”It’s been made clear to me over the last few days that my career at Yorkshire will come to an end when the season finishes. With that in mind, I think now is the appropriate time to step back from the captaincy. It will allow me time to consider my future, and to enjoy the time I have left playing at the club.”I will remain available for selection for the remainder of the summer, and if selected, will give my all for the team as I have done for the past 18 years.”Patterson’s departure brings to an end one of the most distinguished careers in Yorkshire recent history. One of the most reliable of medium-fast bowlers in the country, he has taken 477 first-class wickets for the county and was in the title-winning sides of 2014 and 2015.However, ESPNcricinfo understands that Patterson is not intending to retire and is open to continuing his playing career if the right offer comes along from another county.

Juanito became a cult figure at Real Madrid during his 10 years at the club and is perhaps best remembered for his ability to inspire comebacks. The tricky winger was often the driving force for Los Blancos, playing a key role in famous European wins over Celtic, Rijeka, Anderlecht and Inter as well as an incredible turnaround against Borussia Monchengladbach in 1986. Real Madrid lost the first leg 5-1 but managed to win the return 4-0, with Juanita jumping in delight as he was replaced after securing the comeback win.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Madrid are currently in need of a comeback to keep their Champions League hopes alive after going down 3-0 to Arsenal in the first leg of their quarter-final tie. Juanito''s son, Roberto Gomez, has revealed what he thinks about Madrid's chances and also revealed the awful messages he still receives from Atletico fans regarding the death of his father who died in a car accident. He is still remembered at the Santiago Bernabeu by fans who chant 'Illa illa illa, Juanito maravilla' in the seventh minute in his memory.

  • WHAT JUANITO'S SON SAID

He told Radio Marca: "I don't like to see the lack of respect towards my father, it's painful. Unfortunately, I don't know why, Atletico fans hate him to a brutal degree. It doesn't make much sense. The things people send me are awful. They send me pictures of the car from the crash, awful pictures of that day. These people are sick."

Gomez was asked asked if Real Madrid are capable of turning around the tie: He added: "Of course. [They can] achieve the unthinkable, like against Manchester City, and that this time there are 90 minutes to do it, which at the Bernabéu was always a long time."

West Ham now plotting move for "amazing" £40m gem who may replace Fullkrug

With Graham Potter seemingly on his way to replace Julen Lopetegui, West Ham United are now reportedly plotting a move to sign a £40m young forward who could do the same to Niclas Fullkrug.

West Ham transfer news

Just when it looked as though Julen Lopetegui was turning things around at the London Stadium with a run of four games without defeat, Liverpool and Manchester City arrived to defeat the Hammers by a combined scoreline of 9-1 in what was the final straw for the Spaniard. In his place looks increasingly likely to be Graham Potter, who could make a return to management for the first time since being sacked by Chelsea in 2023.

In a move that must go to plan for Potter after his Chelsea failure and long wait to return to the technical area, the Hammers could turn towards the transfer market and instantly back their new manager. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, West Ham are now plotting a move to sign Conrad Harder from Sporting CP in a deal worth €50m (£42m) this month.

European giants hold talks with agent of £27m West Ham player over move

With Chelsea and Arsenal also interested in the 19-year-old, West Ham will undoubtedly have to put together a convincing pitch to win the race and secure Harder’s signature for years to come. And that’s where Potter’s arrival and the Hammers’ hopeful rise as a result of that could pay dividends.

Conrad Harder for Sporting Club.

What should also provide those at the London Stadium with a much-needed boost in pursuit of the forward is that Sporting are reportedly demanding £40m rather than Harder’s €80m (£67m) release clause.

"Amazing" Harder would solve West Ham's striker problem

With Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen currently sidelined, West Ham will be forced to turn towards summer signing Fullkrug to step up once and for all following a slow start to life in the Premier League. Alas, at 31 years old, the former Borussia Dortmund forward is far from a long-term option or perhaps even a short-term replacement for Bowen in current form. Instead, that’s where Harder could make an instant impact.

The 19-year-old has risen to stardom at Sporting this season, scoring nine goals and assisting a further six in 29 games in all competitions. Earning impressive praise as a result, Harder’s start to life in Portugal was dubbed “amazing” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig back in November.

At just £40m, West Ham could land one of the bargains of the window and a player with plenty more to come by securing Harder’s signature this month.

Dinesh Karthik: Playing in different conditions valuable for World Cup prep

Two-paced pitches, asymmetric grounds and wind – India have faced and overcome several challenges in the Caribbean

Karthik: Hard to be consistent as finisher

The various challenges posed by the conditions in the Caribbean will help India’s preparation to face different situations during the T20 World Cup in Australia, according to batter Dinesh Karthik. After playing the first three T20Is in the West Indies, the teams have moved to Lauderhill in Florida for the last two games of the series this weekend.Karthik was among those who rose above the two-paced pitch in Tarouba for the first T20I and used the asymmetric ground dimensions to his advantage. In the second and third matches in St Kitts, India had to deal with a strong cross wind. After struggling to adapt in the second T20I, India fared much better in the third to take a 2-1 lead in the series.Related

Series – and T20 WC spots – on the line as WI vs India goes to Florida

Karthik strengthens his case for finisher's spot at 2022 T20 World Cup

“I think it is very interesting because even in the World Cup straightaway the three grounds that come to my mind are Sydney – [where] the sides are slightly smaller and the straights are longer – Adelaide, we all know that the sides are very small and again, the straights are long, whereas in Melbourne, it’s the exact opposite – the straights are short and the sides are very big. So, obviously, we are going to be encountering different grounds wherever we are going to be playing, so the challenges are going to be different.”Here, the challenges have been different in every venue where we have played. So, the fact that every time you get an opportunity, there’s a certain challenge that comes with just walking in. That is pressure by itself. One of the key things that Rohit [Sharma] and Rahul [Dravid] have spoken about in this series at the start was adaptability and understanding the situations. I think that is something we’ve done pretty well so far.”Twelve Indian players have pretty much sealed their spots for the T20 World Cup, including Karthik, which leaves seven or eight contenders competing for the remaining three slots. Given India’s rich talent pool, Karthik said it would be difficult for the selectors to lock in the final 15.Dinesh Karthik also heaped praise on India’s vast talent pool•Getty Images

“Look, right now in the Indian team, we have the potential to put out two teams or maybe even three teams, in terms of the number of players available,” he said. “I don’t think many countries can boast of that, so to get just 15 players playing from a good lot of 40 players, there are going to be 20-25 players that are going to think: ‘geez! I could have made that team’.Of late, Karthik has excelled in his role as a finisher, winning games for his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore and for India – both at home and away. Since the start of IPL 2022, he has a strike rate of 205.55 in the death overs (17-20). Only James Neesham (227.65) and Tim David (226.72) have a better strike rate than Karthik in all T20s during this period. The role of a finisher comes with pressure, and Karthik has learnt to embrace it.”Pressure is a privilege at this point of time as a cricketer [and] as a sportsperson,” Karthik said. “It is something that is given to [you] only when playing at the highest level and when people expect certain things out of you. So, I’m happy; I think what’s important is making sure on a given day what the match situation is, reading the game and trying to give the best on that given day.”Karthik once again credited India’s team management for nurturing an environment that gave players security and the opportunity to grow into their roles, despite failures.”This is one of the happiest that I’ve been part of the Indian team… the amount of love and affection that I’ve got, not only from the team and the fans but also the backing from the captain and the coach.”This is what I’ve aimed for all my life and for the captain and coach to show so much belief in me, it is only fair that I repay the faith by giving performances which will help the team cross the line in many ways, and that is what I’ve been trying to do.”

Clement could boldly drop Igamane & unleash Rangers’ "major player"

Glasgow Rangers secured their first Old Firm victory in 18 months earlier this week with a stunning 3-0 win over Celtic at Ibrox, but it will count for nothing if they cannot secure another three points today.

Philippe Clement takes his side to Edinburgh to face a resurgent Hibs side who have defeated both Aberdeen and Hearts in recent weeks.

Rangersmanager PhilippeClement

With such a short turnaround between matches, the supporters can expect a few changes to the starting XI and this might see Hamza Igamane drop to the bench for the clash against the Easter Road side.

Why Hamza Igamane could be dropped to the bench

The young centre-forward was chosen ahead of Danilo and Cyriel Dessers to start against Celtic, and he delivered a mature performance.

He may not have gotten on the scoresheet, but Igamane was full of running, constantly dragging opposition defenders out of space, allowing others behind him to push into the final third and create chances.

Despite this, he also managed to lose the ball ten times while winning just one of the seven ground duels he contested, and it looked like he was beginning to run out of steam towards the end of the game.

With Clement desperate to secure all three points against Hibs, perhaps a change in the final third could do the team the world of good.

Danilo emerged off the bench to score the third goal against Celtic on Thursday and the clash at Easter Road could be the perfect opportunity to unleash him from the start.

The Rangers player who could replace Igamane

The Brazilian has seen his game time managed since making a return to the squad following his serious knee injury.

Despite this, he has made a total of 14 appearances in all competitions this term, scoring seven goals and grabbing two assists, which works out as a goal contribution every 1.5 matches.

On this evidence, the former Feyenoord striker has offered plenty in the final third, with two goals in recent weeks coming against Celtic.

Journalist Jonny McFarlane praised the centre-forward following the Old Firm victory, saying: “Danilo currently has a goal contribution every 68.8 minutes. He scores every 88.5 minutes. If he stays fit, the numbers suggest he will be a major player for Rangers.”

There is certainly no denying his ability, but it looked as though injuries had taken their toll on the player, who missed 41 games for the Ibrox side last term.

With a point to prove and two Old Firms since mid-December, unleashing Danilo against Hibs could be the most logical thing Clement can do, especially with Igamane likely feeling the effects of the previous few weeks.

Rangers striker Danilo.

If so, the former Ajax star could be the difference in the final third for Rangers. With the likes of Ianis Hagi, Vaclav Cerny and Nedim Bajrami all operating behind him, the 25-year-old won’t be short of chances, that’s for sure.

A repeat of the Celtic display would be wonderful, but sealing three points is the priority for the Belgian this afternoon.

Deepak Chahar returns for Zimbabwe ODIs, KL Rahul still unavailable

Rahul Tripathi called up, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav come back as India continue to rotate their players

Sruthi Ravindranath30-Jul-2022Deepak Chahar has made a comeback to the Indian team after nearly six months, during which he was being treated for a back injury, for the ODI series in Zimbabwe in August. Rahul Tripathi has received a maiden ODI call-up, while Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav have been included in the squad of 15 for the three-match series in Harare.India squad, ins and outs

IN: Rahul Tripathi, Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Yadav
OUT: Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal

KL Rahul has not yet recovered sufficiently, after first undergoing a successful surgery for a sports hernia, and then suffering from a bout of Covid-19. Rahul took to his social media to say that his post-surgery recovery had put him on course for the white-ball games against West Indies, but the Covid infection has pushed his progress to full fitness back by a couple of weeks.

Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal, who were all part of the ODIs in the West Indies, have been left out. While there has been no official word on the selections, or non-selections, it is understood that the premier players are being rotated as part of the BCCI’s policy keeping in mind the packed international calendar. India are currently playing a white-ball series in the West Indies, and the Asia Cup will start on August 27 in the UAE, just five days after the last ODI in Zimbabwe.Schedule

August 18: 1st ODI
August 20: 2nd ODI
August 22: 3rd ODI

Chahar last played at any representative level in the T20I series at home against West Indies back in February. He picked up the back injury while undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where he was recovering from the quadricep tear he was diagnosed with during the West Indies games. He subsequently sat out the IPL, where he was Chennai Super Kings’ biggest buy in the 2022 auction, as well as all the international cricket India have played since.Kuldeep recently received the green signal from the NCA medical team after recovering from a hairline fracture in his right wrist, which had forced him out of the South Africa T20Is at home as well as the white-ball tours of Ireland and England. He is in the squad that is currently playing in the T20I series in the West Indies. Kuldeep last played in the IPL for Delhi Capitals, where he picked up 21 wickets in 14 matches.ESPNcricinfo LtdWashington, who last played for India in the ODIs against West Indies, had recovered from a hand injury last month and, more recently, has been in action for Lancashire in the County Championship. He picked up a five-for in the first innings against Northamptonshire in his first county game, and followed it up with a match-winning knock of 34*. He has played one more match, against Kent, and took 3 for 24 in the second innings.Tripathi had received his maiden India call-up in June for the T20Is against Ireland, but did not make the playing XI. While he has made a name for himself with his exploits in T20s, specifically in the IPL, Tripathi has a fairly good record in the 50-over format as well: in 43 List A games, he has 1209 runs at an average of 31.00. In the 2021 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he made 199 runs in five games at 49.75.Shikhar Dhawan, who led India in the West Indies ODIs, will continue as captain for this series as well, with regular captain Rohit Sharma continuing to sit out. The likes of Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Shami have also been rested.

Man Utd now make contact to sign £48k-p/w forward as Rashford replacement

Manchester United have now made contact over a potential new forward for Ruben Amorim’s side as they look to rebuild their attack amid significant speculation surrounding potential departures in the coming months.

Manchester United lose again as INEOS chase Dorgu

Yet another defeat for Manchester United under Ruben Amorim has left them languishing in 13th place in the Premier League, having lost three of their last five outings.

Saved by a late Amad Diallo hat-trick at home to bottom of the league Southampton in midweek, there was no such fortune against Brighton at Old Trafford three days later, with Amorim’s side sinking to a 3-1 defeat in which they managed just a single shot on target, coming from the penalty spot midway through the first half.

It means that Amorim has now seen his side lose six of his 11 games at the helm in the Premier League, with only three wins to his name since his arrival after the November international break, and after the match he claimed that this side may well be the worst in the club’s history.

Man Utd make approach for exciting English talent

That comes as Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed that Manchester United have “expressed concrete interest” in Borussia Dortmund forward Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who has regularly been hittting the headlines in the Bundesliga this campaign.

Still just 20-years-old, the forward was once on the books of the Manchester City academy before opting to follow the path trod by Jadon Sancho and swap the Etihad for Signal Iduna Park, where he has thrived.

Mostly playing off the left hand side, Gittens has grabbed four goals in six Champions League outings, while he has also managed seven goals and four assists in the Bundesliga so far this season, the joint most efforts with Serhou Guirassy for the Black and Yellow.

He has been the subject of significant praise from Football Analyst Ben Mattinson, who dubbed him a star with “electric pace” who has a “lovely ability to use either foot to cross or shoot”.

That form has caught the eye, and the report claims that Bayern, Manchester United and Chelsea are all “considering a move”, though it is likely one that would take place in the summer rather than in the final two weeks of the winter window.

Though he still has three and a half years left to run on his £48,000 a week deal with Dortmund, a move could occur and is even said to be “highly likely” should Dortmund fail to qualify for the Champions League next season, though whether he would be willing to move to another club who likely won’t have Champions League football remains unclear.

With the futures of current left-wing options Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho far from secure at Old Trafford, would Bynoe-Gittens be a smart move by the Red Devils?
