    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Frank has been eyeing up his old Brentford strikers Wissa and Mbuemo since moving to Spurs in June, with both players heavily linked to the north London club this summer. Now, with Mbuemo closer to signing for Manchester United, the Bees appear to be focusing all their attention on landing his strike partner. While neither transfer is confirmed, it's proving to be a difficult summer for the west London outfit as they struggle to hold on to their star players.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Wissa had a remarkable 2024-25 season in front of goal, bagging 19 times in 35 top-flight games. Back in January, that scintillating form led to him becoming Brentford's all-time leading Premier League goal-scorer, surpassing Ivan Toney.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR WISSA?

There's no doubt Wissa deserves a chance to play European football and challenge higher up the Premier League table, but whether Brentford and Spurs will be able to agree on a fee for him remains to be seen. Reports suggest Brentford value Wissa at around £50 million ($68m), although with the DR Congo striker turning 29 in September and having only a year left on his contract, it's likely that Frank will be able to secure his services for a cut price.

Trouble between Vinicius Jr and Real Madrid? Contract talks break down as Brazilian attacker demands higher salary than Kylian Mbappe but Spanish giants refuse to budge on latest offer

The relationship between Vinicius Jr and Real Madrid is tense, as the Brazilian has demanded a higher salary than Kylian Mbappe in his new contract.

Madrid and Vinicius had been in contact over a new extension for the Brazilian striker, which would see him stay at the outfit till 2030. However, reports the talks have stalled and no agreement has materialised. The reason behind the standstill is the Brazilian's demand for a higher wage of €30m (£26m/$35m), including a renewal bonus, which will make him the highest-paid Los Blancos player. The club, however, are not ready to adhere to his demands and are expected to delay the negotiations while also keeping the door open for a transfer this summer if suitable bids are placed on the table for Vinicius.

The 25-year-old joined Madrid back in 2018 and currently has two years left on that contract. Discussions were ongoing regarding a probable contract extension, but the talks have come to a halt with the striker demanding mind-boggling wages. While it is true that Madrid have offered him an appraisal, which will see him earn €10m (£9m/$11m) per season, they don't want to play into his demands, considering his recent downfall in performance, which was visible in the Club World Cup. In the competition, the Brazilian recorded a goal and an assist in six appearances, and if not for Trent Alexander-Arnold's injury, he would not have started against Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final, where he was subbed off in the second half after a poor outing.

DID YOU KNOW?

Vinicius was a front-runner for the Ballon d'Or last year but ultimately did not win the award. Manchester City midfielder Rodri was bestowed with the prize and Madrid boycotted the Ballon d'Or event in protest. The attacker did not live up to the same standards in the 2024-25 campaign, with the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Lamine Yamal far ahead of him in the running.

Rohit Sharma: 'We were not good enough today'

Rohit Sharma feels India were 20-30 runs short with the bat and one more early wicket away from making a game of it in Ahmedabad

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Nov-20231:37

‘Rohit and Kohli stood up for India in every moment’

While India captain Rohit Sharma is really proud of his team for their spectacular run to the ODI World Cup final, he admitted they were just “not good enough” on the big day to get past serial-winners Australia in Ahmedabad. For starters, about 20-30 more runs while batting, with a bigger partnership between half-centurions KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, he said, would have helped.”Honestly, the result hasn’t gone our way,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “And we know that we were not good enough today. But I’m really proud of the team, how we played from game one. It wasn’t our day, we tried everything we could from our side, but it wasn’t supposed to be.”Honestly, 20-30 [runs] more would’ve been good. We spoke around 25-30 overs when KL and Virat were batting. I thought when they were batting they were stitching a good partnership there and then we just needed to bat as long as possible. We were looking at 270-280 at that point, but then we kept losing wickets. We couldn’t stitch a big partnership there, and that’s exactly what Australia did to win the game. They stitched a big partnership after three [early] wickets.”Related

Despite scoring quickly in the first powerplay, thanks largely to Rohit himself, and being 81 for 3 in the 11th over, India slowed down considerably in the middle overs, managing just four fours from overs 11 to 50 and not a single six. Rahul and Kohli were rebuilding after the early losses, putting together 67 off 108 before Pat Cummins dismissed Kohli. India would go on to lose their last five wickets for just 37 runs. The total of 240 was India’s second-lowest in this World Cup batting first, and came after they had amassed scores of 397, 410, 326 and 357 batting first in their previous four games.Australia got off to a jittery start in swinging conditions under lights, losing David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Steven Smith in the first seven overs to be 47 for 3. But once the balls lost some of their shine, they skidded nicely on to the bat and Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne avoided any further hiccup with a 192-run stand dominated by Head.”When you have 240 on the board, you want to take wickets as early as possible, and we did that,” Rohit said. “But then credit to Head and Marnus, they stitched a big partnership and put us completely out of the game. But again, we tried everything we could but I thought the wicket got slightly better to bat on under the lights.”We knew under the lights it would be slightly better [to bat on]. I don’t want to give that as an excuse, we didn’t bat well enough to put enough runs on the board. And then upfront we got those three wickets and we thought another wicket there we can open up the game. But, again, credit to those two guys in the middle for stitching that big partnership.”

Douglas Luiz failure 'a shame' as Fabio Capello warns Juventus have 'underrated' struggling midfielder as he seeks Premier League return

Fabio Capello has warned Juventus they risk losing a quality player as he blames Douglas Luiz's disappointing form on the club's conditions.

Luiz is being touted to move out of Turin in the coming weeks as he is not part of head coach Igor Tudor's long-term plans. According to former manager Capello, the club should be cautious of parting ways with the Brazilian, who he believes could shine under the right conditions and could come to haunt the Italian side should he work wonders at another club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Luiz impressed at Aston Villa before he departed for Turin last year. However, the move has not worked out as expected, as the 27-year-old started just three of the 19 league appearances he made in Serie A. The Brazilian failed to register any goals or assists in any competition, further falling down Tudor's pecking order. Capello blames the system in which the Brazilian played and also held the same opinion for the decline of other players, namely winger Nicolas Gonzalez and midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

  • WHAT CAPELLO SAID

Speaking to , Capello said: "It's a shame, because I think he's underrated. He's on the departure list and hasn't been convincing, but I liked him even though he then disappeared. I thought he had the necessary quality, that he was a good player. He's one of those players who now don't consider themselves good, but perhaps they weren't given the conditions to perform at their best."

Further reiterating his stance, the ex-Juve manager said: "Juventus spent a fortune last year, signing players they considered Juventus: especially Nico, Douglas, and Koopmeiners. It seems impossible to see the latter struggling so much after what he did at Atalanta. They're all players who probably haven't been able to integrate and deliver what was expected: we have ourselves to ask a few questions, now the risk is that some of them will go to another team and become something they never were at Juventus."

The club is meanwhile looking to take disciplinary action against Luiz.

Thunder committed to Sydney as captain Green defends pitch

Ricky Ponting suggested the club might need to consider moving to find better conditions

AAP09-Jan-2024Sydney Thunder remain committed to their western Sydney home, despite question marks over a Showground wicket labelled “substandard” by Ricky Ponting.Thunder’s seven-wicket loss to Perth Scorchers on Monday was plagued by questions over a slow, spinning wicket that produces the lowest scoring rates in the Big Bash League.Ashton Agar took 2 for 6 off four overs for Scorchers, as Thunder were kept to 137 for 8 from their 20 overs. Scorchers reached their target with five balls to spare.Related

Ponting slams Showground pitch as Thunder lose low-scoring game to Scorchers

It is not the first time the Sydney Showground wicket has come under attack, with Scorchers captain Ashton Turner labelling it “disappointing” in early 2019.The run-rate at the Showground of 7.76 since the BBL’s inception is the lowest of all regular grounds, with spinners and off-pace deliveries the norm. That raises questions over the ability of the venue – situated in one of Sydney’s most-populated areas – to assist the BBL in acting as a gateway for new fans into the sport.Former Australia skipper Ponting, in commentary for Seven on Monday night, went as far as to question whether Thunder should move to Canberra permanently, concerned the Showground wicket would stop them attracting or keeping talent. Two of Thunder’s home games this summer are at Canberra’s Manuka Oval. But AAP has been told there are no plans for Thunder to shelve western Sydney, or for the number of games in the area to be reduced. It is more likely Thunder could increase games in the region, given its population of 2.6 million, with the hope of kick-starting the introduction of better facilities.Thunder captain Chris Green rejected any suggestion the club should pick up and leave the Showground for the national capital.”We’re the Sydney Thunder, this is where we like to play. This is our home ground. This is where we’re from, the west of Sydney,” Green said.”I’d hate to see us move down [to Canberra] permanently. I like staying at home, playing at home, having my family come and watch me play. This is our home base.”Green also shot down any suggestion the Showground pitch had been a long-term issue, joking he would love to take the wicket everywhere he goes as a spinner.”This is better than a lot of wickets in the country. It’s just about adapting to those conditions better,” Green said on Monday. “We had a 200-game here last year [in the finals] and the rain ruined it. The Sixers game this year was a sellout, and the rain ruined it.”If we scored 10 more runs or about five less wides tonight, it’s probably going down to the last ball which is an entertaining fixture. So I disagree with those comments.”We can’t just roll out a belter of a wicket and have 220 plays 220, because that tests one side of skill – but this is another side of skill.”

Clarke on Smith: He’ll be the No. 1 Test opener within 12 months

A reinvigorated Steven Smith has not considered what it would mean for his future if the move to Test opener does not pay off for Australia.Three days out from the first Test against the West Indies, Smith’s life at the top of the order began when he faced the new ball in the Adelaide Oval nets on Sunday. One of Australia’s greatest ever batters, Smith revealed he first flagged the idea of replacing the retiring David Warner as opener during last year’s Ashes. He mentioned it again last month, but did not believe the idea was taken seriously until talking with coaches during the SCG Test against Pakistan.Related

No waiting: Smith sees 2019 Ashes as evidence he can open

Brathwaite 'quite clear' on his XI for first Test against Australia

Undecided at first, selectors have been won over by a history of players succeeding when going to the top.”I’ve kind of been pushing it for a few weeks, even before Perth I think, and I might have been floated in England just randomly and said ‘I’ll get up top and I’m happy to play up top’,” he said. “In Perth, I kind of said ‘you know after Davey’s done I’m actually keen to get up there’.”I don’t think they sort of took me seriously until I got to Sydney and I was like ‘I’m actually being genuine here. I’d be keen to get up top and face the new ball.’ And they were like, ‘all right, well, we’ll take that under advisement and see how it all looks.’But the move doesn’t come without risk. And the question remains that if Smith does not succeed and Cameron Green excels at No. 4, what would it mean for the former captain’s place in the side?”I don’t like thinking that way,” Smith said. “I don’t want to think negative thoughts at all. I’m not sure. If someone gets injured in the middle and the next batters in are genuine openers, then maybe they slot back in [at the top] and I go back down. I don’t know the answer. But for right now we’ve got what we believe is our best six batters playing.”Steven Smith hopes to be able to score more freely•Getty Images

Smith does see significant upside in the move, having only dropped down from No. 3 to No. 4 in 2017 to juggle the demands of captaincy. The 34-year-old believes he is at his best against the new ball. He averages 106.2 when walking to the wicket in the first two overs.Warner has also said teams would be unlikely to continue to regularly bounce Smith early in the innings, a tactic which has slowed the right-hander’s scoring down in recent years.”It would be pretty game if you’ve got a brand new ball bowling short stuff and wasting it,” Smith added. “It helps the scoring rate when you’re facing the new ball and there’s a bit more attacking going on.”Over the last few years I’ve come in after quite a lot of runs, the ball’s a bit softer. “[They] have a cover in and maybe four on the legside, guys are bowling straight and able to control the scoreboard a little bit more. That’s probably kept me quieter and made me face a lot more balls to score runs.”Perhaps that changes a bit with the new ball. You obviously have a bit more attacking fields and more gaps out there to score runs. I’m looking forward to that.”Sick of watching and waiting to bat, Smith said a desire to move was partly driven by the idea of a new challenge at this point in his career. But he also felt it unfair that Green could be forced to open this early in his career if the selectors’ desire to have the allrounder back in the team landed him there.”It didn’t sit right having him come in and bat up top,” Smith said. “I’ve played for a long time and I’m an experienced player and think it’s something that I should have done. He’s suited to No. 4. Plays there in Shield cricket, does well there.”

After a tough year, Green returns to 'natural game' at No. 4 in Australia's Test side

Cameron Green could hardly be blamed if he was feeling a little like he was damned if he did open the batting in the Adelaide Test and damned now that he is batting at No.4.The Western Australia allrounder says he is excited and grateful to make his Test match return against West Indies having not played the format since losing his place for the first time in his short Test career during the Ashes last July. But his presence in Australia’s XI this week has oddly raised the ire of some fans. Had he replaced David Warner at the top of the order, which was a possibility he was preparing for until as late as last Wednesday, he would have been seen as an unworthy, large square peg trying to fit in a bespoke round hole, given he has no opening experience at first-class level. Now that he isn’t, some believe he still hasn’t done enough to warrant batting at No.4 while Steven Smith moves from his prolific middle-order post to the top, despite Green averaging 65.09 in 24 Sheffield Shield innings at No.4 and 66.03 in his last 38 Shield innings overall. But Green says he is not feeling any added pressure given the high-profile game of musical chairs that has been played to get him back into the team.”I don’t feel any pressure,” Green said. “Obviously replacing someone like Steve is pretty tough. But I’m just going to play my own way. But I’m obviously grateful for him putting that in his mind and thinking of me.”I think he’s super excited to be opening. I think it’s a win-win.”Related

There was a moment in March last year when it would have been inconceivable that Green wouldn’t be playing in Australia’s Test team just 10 months later. In the fourth Test against India in Ahmedabad, he made his first Test century. A chanceless 114 against an attack featuring Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. He has more Test hundreds in India than David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh combined. It was just his second innings back from a badly broken finger, and just his second Test since he took his maiden Test match five-for against South Africa. At the end of the Ahmedabad Test, Green’s 20th, he averaged 37.64 with the bat and 34.30 with the ball. After 20 Tests, Jacques Kallis averaged 31.73 and 33.34 respectively. In the same week in early March 2023, Mitchell Marsh – eight years Green’s senior and averaging 25.20 and 38.34 respectively after 32 Test matches – was playing his first first-class match in 18 months and just his fourth in four years after missing three months of cricket due to ankle surgery. He didn’t bowl in the match against Tasmania but made a stunning unbeaten 108 off 111 balls to lift his career Shield batting average to 29.98.Four months and just four Tests later, Marsh had taken Green’s Test spot. Green’s performances in the World Test Championship final and the first two Ashes Tests were underwhelming and unsurprising given he had come off a full IPL where he had played 16 matches and scored 452 runs at 50.22, striking at 160.28, including a 47-ball century.Marsh, incidentally, scored 128 runs in nine innings with one half-century in the same IPL having gone home mid-tournament to get married.Green turned up to England unprepared, having never played cricket in the UK at any level, and having just a week of nets to acclimatise. A hamstring niggle kept him out of the third Ashes Test at Headingley after scores of 6, 25, 38, 28, 0, and 18 and five wickets at 45 apiece.Marsh took his chance making a stunning century at Headingley. He backed that up with a half-century and an unbeaten 31 at Old Trafford to outperform Green, who was playing in the same team. Green was then left out at the Oval when Australia picked just one allrounder.”It was pretty obvious,” Green said reflecting on his omission. “There wasn’t really a need to explain. I think Mitch is playing some incredible cricket and has done for a few years. I totally understood where they were going with that. But at the same time, I was grateful to be with the team so I could still work on my own craft and try and put my name back in the hat.”Green was aware too that his brutal schedule, which included the IPL in between the Test tours of India and England contributed to his form in the UK.”I always knew it was going to be a tough year,” Green said. “But also at the same time it’s a great opportunity to learn and improve my game and see different environments and different coaching staff as well.”I’m grateful I went through it.”Those four Tests have dragged Green’s averages with bat and ball, respectively, back to 33.59 and 36.03, which his critics will suggest aren’t worthy of his feted to return to No.4. But Ben Stokes was also averaging 33.21 and 37.84 after 24 Tests, something Australia’s coaching staff stressed to Green privately after his axing in England. Chair of selectors George Bailey is adamant he is in Australia’s best six batters, something Green was appreciative of hearing. But he is aware words aren’t the be-all and end-all.”It’s always nice when you get that from the coaching staff and the selectors,” Green said. “But you’ve got to also showcase on the main stage.”He returns to the main stage refreshed and rejuvenated having spent more time at home this summer than he did all of last year. And despite only playing twice since the ODI World Cup, he is ready to take on the responsibility and familiarity of No.4.”What I like is that I’ve got a bit of time,” Green said. “I’ve always felt maybe a touch rushed at No.6, especially after Heady [Travis Head], he makes it look a bit too easy at No.5. I’ve always felt like I’ve maybe had to push the game along where I feel like No.4 is my natural game, where I can take my time and get myself in.”
