Left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann has been cleared to bowl in international cricket by the ICC. He had been reported for a suspect action following the two-Test series in Sri Lanka where he had picked up 16 wickets in the series as Australia won 2-0.Kuhmemann, who had never previously been reported in a professional career dating back to 2017, was tested in Brisbane and learnt of the outcome on Wednesday.”He…underwent an independent bowling assessment at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane on 15 February, where it was revealed that the amount of elbow extension for all his deliveries was within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations,” an ICC statement said.Related

Kuhnemann could have continued playing domestic cricket while his action was assessed although the thumb he dislocated during the BBL has kept him out of action since. It is not known yet if he will be fit in time for Tasmania’s next Sheffield Shield game against Queensland in Hobart from March 6. He is a strong chance of being selected for the Test tour of West Indies in June and July.During the testing process, Kuhnemann went through a session that lasted more than one hour, where he was asked to bowl at a similar speed and with similar revolutions to what he did in the second Test in Galle. ICC experts were at hand to observe the proceedings as Kuhnemann bowled, wearing markers on his body and surrounded by several high-speed cameras and a 3D motion analysis system.”We are pleased for Matt that this matter is now resolved,” Ben Oliver, CA executive general manager national teams said in a statement. “It has been a challenging period for Matt, however he has carried himself exceptionally well.”He has had the full support of Australian cricket and he can now move forward to the next phase of his international career with great confidence.”Not long after he had been reported, his Australia team-mates rallied behind him, with Steven Smith, Australia’s captain in Pat Cummins’ absence, saying, “It’s come as a bit of a surprise to me. He has been playing for eight years in professional cricket and nothing has been said in that amount of time.”I am thinking of him, at present, he has to go through the process. We’re confident he will pass. He will go through that process back home. We wish him all the best.”Kuhnemann has taken 25 wickets in five Tests at 22.20.

Talking before the defeat at Turf Moor, Le Bris admitted that Sunderland still want to make new additions before the September 1 deadline.

When asked on potential signings out wide, Le Bris added: “There’s a lot of speculation which is positive for everyone. Same answer. If it’s possible to reinforce the squad with the right profile we’ll move forward, but it’s not just our question. It’s a question of the player and the club, so we’ll see.”

A new centre-back is also wanted, especially as Dan Ballard went off injured against Burnley. Jhon Lucumi of Bologna has been heavily linked with a move to Sunderland, however, another defensive target with Premier League experience is wanted by the Black Cats.

Sunderland make contact to sign Lloyd Kelly

According to reports from Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Sunderland have made an enquiry to sign Juventus centre-back Lloyd Kelly. Formerly of Newcastle, Kelly’s loan move to Turin became permanent over the summer for £15m, but a return to the Premier League is possible.

As well as the Black Cats making contact over a transfer, Crystal Palace have followed suit as they view Kelly as a replacement for Guehi, who is being heavily linked with a move to Liverpool.

Juventus have even identified Paris Saint-Germain’s Lucas Beraldo as a replacement for Kelly, so a last-minute move back to England could be on the cards.

Kelly, previously of Bristol City and Bournemouth before his move to Newcastle and subsequent transfer to Juventus, has played 64 times in the Premier League and was once called “incredible” by former manager Gary O’Neil.

Therefore, if Sunderland miss out on Lucumi and Crystal Palace keep hold of Guehi, Kelly, similar to O’Nien, could be an ideal option for Le Bris, making this one to watch.

"Shocker" – £170k-p/w Tottenham star left furious despite win at West Ham

A Tottenham Hotspur star was left furious, despite his side picking up a 3-0 victory against West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Spurs back on track after comfortable West Ham victory

Spurs suffered their first Premier League defeat of the Thomas Frank era prior to the international break, with AFC Bournemouth emerging as surprise 1-0 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but they managed to get back on track against West Ham United last time out.

Frank’s side ran out 3-0 winners at the London Stadium, with Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Micky van de Ven getting on the scoresheet, and the manager was left impressed by his side’s display.

Frank said: “It was a very good win. I thought we performed very well in big spells of the game. The first 15, 20 minutes were even-ish but after that, I think we got more and more hold of the game.

“In the second half, we just kept going and we scored good goals from Pape, a well-drilled corner, the second goal maybe even better, a fantastic ball from Romero to Lucas, really good and we just kept going.”

Ultimately, the north Londoners emerged as comfortable winners, but there was a controversial moment in the game, with captain Cristian Romero seeing his goal disallowed for an alleged foul on Kyle Walker-Peters in the build-up.

Jamie O’Hara was left fuming with the decision from referee Jarred Gillett, and the former Tottenham man was not the only one, with £170k-a-week star James Maddison also taking to X to lambast the refereeing performance.

VAR under heavy scrutiny after just four games

We are only four games into the new Premier League campaign, but VAR is already under intense scrutiny, with Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer for the PGMOL, admitting an error was made in disallowing Josh King’s goal for Fulham against Chelsea.

Fortunately for Spurs, they went on to pick up all three points, despite Romero’s goal being disallowed, but the Cottagers weren’t as lucky, with Chelsea ultimately going on to record a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

As such, it is evident that refereeing standards must improve, and the PGMOL are lucky that Spurs went on to win the game with ease regardless, courtesy of a fantastic second-half performance.

The games are now starting to come thick and fast for Frank’s side, with the Lilywhites set to return to Champions League action against Villarreal on Wednesday night.

Liverpool can help Ekitike reach Isak levels with late move for £35m star

We’ve got to face the facts: there’s a growing chance that Alexander Isak will not sign for Liverpool before the transfer window closes in just one week.

Liverpool’s desire to sign the Newcastle United striker, and indeed Isak’s desperate hopes of joining the Reds this summer, have been dashed by the Magpies’ struggles to sign new forwards.

Even now, with the 2025/26 campaign underway and the market into the final stretch, United have failed to add a striker to their ranks, missing out on a slew of top targets over the past several months. They need two for Isak to leave, for Callum Wilson left St. James’ Park at the end of his contract in June.

Speaking of Tyneside, Liverpool make their way to Newcastle’s stadium on Monday, meeting Eddie Howe’s side in what is being billed as a venomous Premier League clash between renewed rivals.

Arne Slot led Liverpool to the league title last season, but many comings and goings have occurred in the months since, and Liverpool still need another forward, Isak or not.

Liverpool's search for a forward

With the tragic passing of Diogo Jota this summer, and the sales of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, Liverpool are somewhat light in attack, even though they have signed Florian Wirtz in a British-record deal and have landed a new number nine in Hugo Ekitike, joining from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79m in July.

Two goals and an assist from as many matches marks quite the start to his Liverpool journey (more of the same tonight, Hugo), and has even led some to question the need for a number nine of Isak’s calibre when Slot has a superstar-in-the-making brewing.

But, should Isak stay put, Liverpool must surely still push toward a new forward, potentially someone capable of playing across a range of attacking berths.

Real Madrid’s Rodrygo has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League and to Liverpool this summer, but Northern correspondent Dominic King has confirmed that the Brazilian is not on the Anfield agenda.

However, if Isak doesn’t sign, Liverpool might want to act on their earmarked interest in an up-and-coming winger with a point to prove.

That man is Lyon’s Malick Fofana. Previous reports this summer detail Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has been poised to lodge an official offer if the opportunity arises, and that time might be on the horizon, should Newcastle bar the door on Isak’s exit.

Lyon winger Malick Fofana

Arsenal have also shown an interest this summer, have been willing to pay €40m (about £35m), but the Gunners have now signed Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace, leaving the door open for Liverpool, should they wish to make their move.

What Malick Fofana would bring to Liverpool

Fofana might only be 20 years old, but he has made considerable progress since joining Lyon from Belgian club Genk in January 2024, scoring 16 goals and supplying eight assists across 64 matches.

Lyon are still in Ligue 1 after their relegation due to financial breaches was overturned, and Fofana has posted a goal and an assist across his two appearances this season.

Lyon's Malick Fofana

Dynamic, versatile and endowed with a physicality and befits a high-profile role in the Premier League, Fofana could be a fantastic addition at Liverpool, potentially even helping Ekitike reach his much-discussed ceiling.

Ekitike, 23, is mobile and powerful and pacy, and he has already shown at Liverpool his capacity. He bears a likeness to Isak, and no mistake, but there’s no question that the Sweden international is the more complete and refined man, more clinical in front of goal.

Maybe, with this in mind, Liverpool don’t actually need to sign Isak. While he’s rightly FSG’s top target, the Magpies man shares interesting attributes with Ekitike, and the same can be said for Gordon and Fofana.

Indeed, data-led platform FBref have revealed that Fofana’s high-speed dribbling and natural clinical edge make him a similar player to the England international, perhaps with an even keener edge in front of goal.

All in all, Gordon is more refined than the boyish Fofana (as is also the case with Ekitike and Isak), but perhaps a new partnership could be born on Merseyside, evoking the spirit of that Gordon-Isak partnership at Newcastle but doing so with new parts.

Fofana, praised for his “electric” style by content creator Dev Bajwa, has already demonstrated a fierce sharpness in front of goal, and a frightening athleticism besides. As per FBref, he ranks among the top 7% of positional peers across Europe for non-penalty goals, the top 2% for progressive carries and the top 12% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90.

Truly, he has the potential to become something special, and with Cody Gakpo already holding down the fort on Liverpool’s left flank, Fofana could enter the fray without being bogged down by the weight of expectation.

Allowed to develop organically alongside Ekitike, Liverpool could find themselves cheering on a staggering new partnership, potentially saving millions on Isak and former target Gordon.

Yet still advancing Slot’s project to an even more illustrious level.

WATCH: USMNT midfielder Yunus Musah provides game-winning assist to lead Atalanta to Champions League win over Club Brugge

U.S. men's national team midfielder Yunus Musah came off the bench to play a key role in Atlanta's Champions League 2-1 victory over Club Brugge. The 22-year-old assisted Atalanta's late winner to help the Serie A side secure three crucial points in the second round of Champions League league phase. La Dea now sit 19th in the standings.

    Musah makes a difference

Musah is still adjusting to life in his new surroundings in Atalanta, having made the move from Milan on loan this summer. The American started on the bench in Tuesday's clash, coming on in the 53rd minute with the Italian side down 1-0 to the visiting Brugge.

The midfielder picked up a yellow card almost immediately, but settled into the game. After seeing his side pull one back on a 74th-minute Lazar Samardzic penalty, Musah then played an integral part in putting his team ahead, flicking on an 87th-minute corner kick straight into the path of Mario Pasalic for Atalanta's late game-winner.

    The season so far

Musah has largely been eased into his loan spell at Atalanta, playing just 31 minutes in three Serie A appearances so far. He did start the club's 4-0 loss to reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, though, to start this season's competition.

Tuesday's game, then, could be a turning point for the midfielder, who is looking to push his way back into the USMNT picture. After skipping out on the Gold Cup, Musah was left out of September camp as Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff took a look at other midfielders.

Atalanta have one more game before the international break as they host Como in Serie A on Saturday. The USMNT, meanwhile, will announce their roster this week ahead of friendlies against Ecuador and Australia.

'It’s not amongst the top leagues' – Columbus Crew owner Jimmy Haslam calls on MLS to serve 'better product' to reach top-five goal

Jimmy Haslam, who owns the Columbus Crew and Cleveland Browns, claimed that MLS has a "long way to go" before it is able to consider itself a top-five league. He called on the league to "put a better product on the field" and suggested that a promotion-relegation system could potentially drum up interest as MLS continues to struggle in drawing consistent TV audiences.

Getty Images SportCalling for improvement

Haslam acknowledged that while MLS has made progress, it remains far from its ambition of becoming one of the world’s top leagues. Speaking at a conference in London, he stressed that improving the quality and watchability of the soccer is essential, adding that building a more loyal domestic audience would be an important first step.

"We still have a long way to go. The Premier League on Saturday mornings is a good draw in the United States. We still have a long way to go in getting people to watch our product on TV, which is where true value is created," he said, according to Sports Business Journal.

Haslam compared what MLS teams receive from their TV contract in comparison to what teams get in the NFL.

"Our NFL contract pays $420 million a year; our MLS contract pays $4 million a year.” Haslam said.

AdvertisementPro-rel offers an option

Haslam also fielded questions about promotion and relegation. It has long been a point of contention within the American soccer sphere. Some have claimed that it simply isn't feasible in MLS. Others claim that it would add a certain jeopardy that brings about more interest in the soccer week in, week out. Haslam acknowledged he isn't sure promotion and relegation will be a part of MLS, but stressed the league has to look at potential changes to gain more traction.

"Do we ever get to that MLS? I’m not sure,” Haslam said. "We’re going to have to change some things up. I don’t know whether MLS is 10th or 12th, but it’s not amongst the top leagues. And if we want to go to – I’ll make up a number, to five or six – we’re going to have to do something different. Could that be a possibility? It could."

Getty ImagesThe threat of USL

For the first time in recent memory, MLS is facing serious competition in USL. The league announced its intention to attain Division I status in 2027, with promotion-relegation to follow a year after. That was backed up by a financial commitment from private investment firm BellTower Partners last week.

USL CEO Alec Papadakis highlighted it as a potential inflection point in their growth.

"The investment underscores their confidence in, and alignment with, our vision for the future of the USL," he said. "It strengthens our ability to deliver on that promise by advancing top-tier Division One, introducing promotion and relegation, and aligning American soccer more closely with the global game.

"As we enter this next chapter, we have charted a bold course for the sport in the United States. With Kewsong [Lee]’s strategic perspective, operational acumen, and proven leadership, we gain an invaluable partner in the ongoing effort to bring that vision to life."
