Eoin Morgan hails bowlers' belief as England steal improbable epic

Tom Curran and Chris Jordan praised for holding nerve as England close out two-run win

Matt Roller04-Sep-2020Eoin Morgan has hailed his bowling attack’s belief in their own strengths after Australia’s late-innings implosion allowed England to squeeze out a two-run win in the first T20I at the Ageas Bowl on Friday night.Australia needed 39 from 36 balls at the start of Adil Rashid’s final over, but he removed both Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell to give England an opening. That meant Morgan gave Jofra Archer and Mark Wood their respective final overs earlier than anticipated as he looked to expose Australia’s main weakness – their lack of power below No. 4 – and he was rewarded when they removed David Warner and Alex Carey respectively.Morgan admitted that Australia had been “in command for the majority” of the run-chase, but he credited his bowlers’ ability with the old white ball for delivering a series of breakthroughs, allowing them a foothold in a game that appeared to have slipped away.”We have talked as a side about making inroads and when we do, we have threats to take maybe two or three at a time,” Morgan said. “Some of our pace bowlers and Adil have posed that threat, making it particularly difficult for people coming in and facing them straight away.”I think after Moeen’s over, things started to turn for us. We got the ball reverse-swinging a little bit, but again, creating that opportunity with Adil getting Maxwell and Smith created that opportunity.””I thought we might end up running out of our best bowlers earlier, but they seemed to continue to take risks, particularly against Adil and then Jof came back earlier as a consequence of that.”ALSO READ: England storm back to choke chase and take 1-0 series leadMorgan said that after Australia’s fast start – Aaron Finch and Warner put on 98 for the first wicket in 11 overs – England had little choice but to look for wickets, and he was prepared to lose the game by a significant margin rather than take it deep but never look like getting back into it.”We needed to take wickets to try and stay in the game. I don’t mind if we lose the game inside 16 overs.,” he said. “To try and win the game is the priority, so you have to chase your tail a little bit or come up with different things.”I’m delighted the guys showed belief and courage to do something to take wickets, and that was displayed a lot in the last six overs when we held our length a lot because it was the hardest to hit.”Over two years ago we would have gone to bowling yorkers or slower balls which would have brought Australia back into the game. It was great that we stuck to our guns.”Morgan gave particular praise to Tom Curran – who held his nerve after being hit for six by Marcus Stoinis to leave Australia needing nine to win from the final four balls – and Chris Jordan, who bowled a brilliant 19th over on the night he won his 50th T20I cap.”In the winter it was very similar in New Zealand and South Africa where Chris Jordan and Tom Curran led the attack and took the responsibility,” Morgan said. “It is quite a weighty responsibility but they see an opportunity to take the team forward and lead the team and they do it very well.”For Tom, the game that sticks out in particular is the game at Durban and then again tonight with him closing it out.”We have shown a lot of faith in [Jordan] because he has earned it. He has been one of our greatest ever bowlers and only sits behind Broady in the lead wicket-takers. To have someone like that who is calm, even when he is not bowling and continuing to offer on and off the pitch.”For younger guys coming through, I think he sets a great example and given he has only come back from surgery recently, he has done a great job.”

Tim Bresnan joins Warwickshire on two-year deal

Tim Bresnan, the former England and Yorkshire allrounder, has joined Warwickshire on a two-year deal that will keep him at Edgbaston until the end of the 2022 season.Bresnan will join the club initially on a loan deal, subject to ECB clearance, which covers the remainder of the 2020 county season.”I’m thrilled to be joining Warwickshire,” said Bresnan. “It’s a club that I’ve always admired, and I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed playing at Edgbaston with Yorkshire and England.”I’ve had some great conversations with Paul Farbrace about the way that he plans to take the club forwards, and I see this move as a great fit for both of us. I have still got a strong desire to continuing playing at the top level and to win, so hopefully I can pass on a bit of my experience to the young players who are coming through.”I know quite a few of the players well, so I can’t wait to move down and get cracking.”Born in Pontefract, Bresnan enjoyed a 19-year career at Yorkshire, and played a lead role in the side that won back-to-back County Championships in the 2014 and 2015 seasons. At international level, he was part of the England teams that won the ICC men’s World T20 in the Caribbean in 2010 and reached No.1 in the ICC Test world rankings in 2011. He also was part of England’s Ashes-winning squad in 2010-11, playing a key role in the series-sealing wins at Melbourne and Sydney.Paul Farbrace, Sport Director at Warwickshire CCC, said: “With multiple trophies to his name, Tim is a winner and he knows exactly what it takes to perform and to ultimately succeed at the highest level.”He has vast experience of bowling in the powerplays and of closing out games with the ball and bat in both white ball formats. In First Class cricket, he has the ability to bowl long and challenging spells and also produce game-changing innings.”With several young, homegrown players coming through, we also see Tim’s experience as a great asset to help these players understand what is required to reach their potential and be part of a Warwickshire team that can challenge for trophies. Having him on board is a fantastic move for the Club.”Warwickshire announced yesterday that its men’s squad will return to training on July 1 in preparation for the delayed start to the 2020 county season on August 1. Details of the formats and fixture list will be revealed by the England & Wales Cricket Board in the coming weeks.

R Ashwin, Keshav Maharaj, Nicholas Pooran's Yorkshire contracts terminated

Overseas trio become latest players to have county contracts cancelled

Yorkshire have announced that their three overseas signings for the 2020 season – R Ashwin, Keshav Maharaj and Nicholas Pooran – have had their contract terminated by mutual consent.Ashwin, who has previously played county cricket for Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire, had been due to play the majority of the County Championship season, while Pooran was set to re-join the club for the T20 Blast having played three times in the competition last summer. Maharaj had been due to play the first two games of the County Championship season. All professional cricket in England and Wales has been suspended until July 1 at the earliest due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and several counties have now cancelled contracts for their overseas players both as a cost-saving measure and as a reflection of the uncertainties surrounding international travel.”I really appreciate the players’ understanding in this matter,” said Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket. “We have been in regular contact with the players and their agents throughout this Covid pandemic.”They have been extremely professional and appreciate the uncertainty facing counties at present. We hope that we will be able to see them at Emerald Headingley in the future.”

Chelsea’s 8/10 ace won ten duels and was even better than Jackson vs Spurs

Well, that was a little more straightforward than most were probably expecting it would be.

Despite a season of disappointing results in the Premier League, an injury list a mile long, and a bench full of teenagers, Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea quite comfortably dispatched an almost full-strength Tottenham Hotspur side last night, much to the delight of Samford Bridge.

There were several brilliant performances from the men in Blue, and while Nicolas Jackson stood out thanks to his goal, there was another starter who was even better, and somehow, it wasn't Cole Palmer.

Nicolas Jackson's performance vs Tottenham

Jackson must love playing against Spurs as he has now scored 36% of his league goals against the Lilywhites after netting for the 11th time in the competition in the second half of last night's game.

However, it wasn't just the goal that won the 22-year-old plaudits on the night; it was his all-around game. While he might have made a few errors here and there, he was a real thorn in Spurs' side for most of the game.

He impressed football.london's Bobby Vincent on the night, with the journalist awarding the Senegalese international an 8/10 for his efforts and writing that his header was 'poacher-esque.'

However, if there are still some out there unconvinced, then they only need to take a look at his numbers from the game, as in his 89 minutes of football, he scored once, succeeded in two of his three dribbles, took two shots on target, took 30 touches, won nine of 16 duels, won a foul and even made four tackles.

Overall, it was an impressive showing from the relatively inexperienced striker that should leave fans feeling encouraged about his future at the club, although he wasn't the best player on the night.

Moises Caicedo's performance vs Tottenham

Yes, the player who deserves even more credit than Jackson after last night's win is the £115m man, Moises Caicedo.

The Ecuadorian international might not have got on the scoresheet – or even provided an assist for that matter – but his performance in the middle of the park was exemplary and served as a reminder to his detractors what he could be like in a winning team.

Vincent was full of praise for the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace on the night, giving him an 8/10 and writing that it was 'a tremendous performance' from the 'energetic midfielder.'

This assessment of the 22-year-old's showing is backed up by his numbers. In the 96 minutes he spent on the pitch, he took 62 touches, won ten out of 12 duels, won four fouls, made five tackles, two blocks, one clearance, and one interception, didn't commit a single foul, and wasn't dribbled past once either.

Ultimately, the all-action star didn't directly contribute to either of Chelsea's goals on the night, but his overall performance cannot be overlooked as, alongside his midfield partners, he helped run the game for the Blues and was the best player on the pitch.

Spurs line up move for £60m star who’d be their new Eriksen

If you ask any Tottenham Hotspur fan what period in recent times was the most enjoyable and successful, almost every individual would say the run from 2015–19.

The core of that success involved the likes of Heung-min Son, Harry Kane, and Jan Vertonghen, but there was one player who was just as influential.

The player in question is Christian Eriksen, who featured in 305 matches for the Lilywhites, scoring 69 times and providing 90 assists.

New boss Ange Postecoglou is keen to strengthen his midfield this summer, and on his radar is a highly-rated Eriksen clone.

Spurs’ search for a new midfielder

As per a recent report from Ben Jacobs via CaughtOffside, Spurs are seriously interested in signing Giorgiy Sudakov.

The Ukrainian star plays for Shakhtar Donetsk, who are known to be difficult to deal with in regards to transfers.

Heorhiy Sudakov for Shakhtar

Despite having an incredible £128m release clause in his contract, it’s reported that a fee of around £60m will likely be enough to secure his services in the summer.

However, if Spurs do go ahead with attempting to sign the midfielder, they will face competition from European giants such as Inter and Juventus.

Spurs have a "generational" teen talent who could be the new Dele Alli

This star could rival players such as James Maddison for a spot in Postecoglou’s first-team in good time.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 17, 2024 Sudakov would be a James Maddison rival

James Maddison’s start to life at Tottenham couldn’t have gone any smoother, with the £40m man scoring twice and assisting twice in his first four league matches.

However, an injury against Chelsea earlier this season saw him miss 13 games of action, and since then, he’s not been quite as impactful, failing to register a goal contribution in his last five matches.

Nonetheless, the interest in Sudakov highlights one of two things: either Postecoglou isn’t entirely happy with Maddison being his first choice number ten, or he intends to tweak the system next season.

The 21-year-old star is an attacking midfielder by trade, but he’s already shown that he can comfortably play as a left midfielder or slightly deeper as a box-to-box this season.

As you can see by the table above, the number 10 has shown that he can compete against the very best, as he starred in the Champions League against Barcelona earlier this season.

Playing away to Barca is often a daunting prospect for the most experienced players, but Sudakov proved that he’s not afraid of any challenge, as he was constantly a threat against the La Liga side.

What this game highlighted in particular was that the Ukraine star doesn’t only create, but he’s also a goal-scorer. The fact that he’s netted seven goals in 28 appearances this season further supports that.

Another aspect that was impressive was the way he dazzled the Barca midfield with his dribbling, completing 100% of his take-ons, which certainly highlights his technical ability.

Furthermore, the fact that he had 62 touches and completed 40 passes proves that he’s an extremely confident individual who is desperate to put his stamp on the game, which is what Tottenham need right now in particular.

Georgiy Sudakov for Shakhtar Donetsk.

What makes this potential move even more interesting is the fact that football scout Jacek Kulig has previously compared Sudakov to Eriksen, with the player's range of passing, creativity, and set piece mastery alike.

Sudakov, therefore, is most definitely a promising talent, but surely Spurs wouldn’t spend £60m on a Maddison backup? Either way, the thought of welcoming another Eriksen to north London will be a tantalising one.

'I want to stop being the one who is vulnerable' – Sam Curran

Sam Curran says that his objective during England’s Test series against New Zealand this month is to “stop being the one who is vulnerable”, after appearing to have kept his place in the side for Thursday’s first Test at Mount Maunganui ahead of his rival allrounder Chris Woakes. In a promising start to his Test career, Curran has averaged 30.05 with the bat and 29.00 with the ball in 11 Tests, and was named Man of the Series in his maiden summer against India in 2018 after a series of gutsy displays, particularly in the first Test at Edgbaston, where he set up a tight victory with four first-innings wickets and a vital 63.However, his twin roles of fourth seamer and No. 8 batsman offer little in the way of job security. Curran has been dropped on four occasions already in his career – including for the first four Tests of this summer’s Ashes – with his obvious aptitude for the cut-and-thrust of Test cricket unable to protect him on the occasions when England have needed to change their team balance.”There was [frustration],” he admitted, “but the team was in a good place going into the Ashes. I was in all the squads, so that was a confidence booster. At the same time you’d love to be playing, and as the series went on you’re itching to get out on the field.”But now, with James Anderson still missing from England’s ranks while he recovers from a long-term calf injury, Curran’s ability to swing the new ball, allied to his left-arm line, appears to have tipped the balance for the selectors, as they prepare to field a side containing three other right-arm seamers in Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes, alongside the left-arm spin of Jack Leach.”I think anyone looking at the balance of the side can see that is pretty obvious,” Curran said of his perceived battle with Woakes for the one remaining place in the side. “I think if I do get the chance, it is about nailing down my spot in the side and stop being the one that is vulnerable.Sam Curran won selection ahead of Chris Woakes but went wicketless•Getty Images

“That is my responsibility and whoever gets the spot, if it is me, has to take the opportunity by getting runs and taking wickets and contributing to the team. If I do get the nod, hopefully I can go well and contribute with both bat and ball.”As an allrounder I look up to someone like Stokesy and the way he contributes with the bat up the order and he takes wickets when he bowls and that is what I aspire to do. As long as I’m helping to win games for the team then I’m happy.”Curran had some limited success during a tough three-day warm-up against New Zealand A in Whangarai ahead of the first Test, claiming three second-innings wickets on a pitch which Archer described as “probably the flattest I’ve played on in my life”, to give England hope of forcing a win before a late-order rally shut up shop for the hosts. And while he has been in New Zealand for a month already during the T20I series, he said the chance to hone his technique with the red Kookaburra ball had been a useful exercise in spite of the hard yakka, especially given that his lack of pace was exposed in his last overseas Test, against West Indies in Antigua earlier this year.”Yeah, it was nice to get out there with a red ball in a first-class game with a bit more on it,” Curran said. “It was nice for the bowling group to be put under pressure against some of their good New Zealand batters and I thought they played well.”I think any bowler who bowls with a Kookaburra is going to say they prefer the Dukes but you’ve got to learn somehow,” he added. “If you look at the scores in New Zealand domestic cricket there are a lot of hundreds scored but you never know, in cloudy conditions the scores could get lower.ALSO READ: Sibley deserves his Test chance – Rory Burns“We can’t predict what the wicket is going to be like next week until we get up to the Mount and we’ll come up with plans. It is a great learning curve for me, but I’ve made some strides in this game and come up with a few different options so I’m pretty confident. One of those options will be to come round the wicket and create an angle into the many right-handers in New Zealand’s top order.”It’s not necessarily new to me, I do do it quite a bit in county cricket,” he said, “but probably more overseas where the ball doesn’t swing as much. Trying to get the batsmen to play a lot more coming by round the wicket, it is just about finding different ways.”It is a new thing for me to bowl with a red ball in New Zealand so I’m still learning, but I thought it came out better than it did in the first warm-up game so I’m feeling pretty confident going into next week.”Curran will have a number of familiar faces around him in the first Test, including his Surrey captain Rory Burns, now established at the top of the order, as well as his former Surrey academy team-mates Ollie Pope and Dom Sibley, who is set to make his Test debut.”I joined the Surrey academy at 14 and that is when I played against Cranleigh where Popey was, and Sibbers was at Whitgift,” Curran said, “so I played against them all the way through the academy days until we got into the first team at Surrey.”It is a nice little friendship we’ve got going and I know Popey and Sibbers’ parents are coming out as well so it will be special to see so many familiar faces.”I think it makes it a bit easier to be playing with guys you’ve grown up with. International cricket is international cricket but when you’re playing with your mates and you’re standing in the field with guys you’re familiar with, if things are going badly you can kind of laugh it off and stay positive because you’re playing with mates and that’s good fun.”

Sky Sports: Aston Villa "monitoring" £25m striker ahead of possible move

With much of the focus at Aston Villa remaining on the hunt for the top four, one eye has turned towards the summer with the Villans preparing to make some potential moves ahead of the transfer window opening.

Aston Villa braced for big summer

Whilst fears about being the next Premier League club to face financial fair play sanctions have dampened some of the excitement around Villa's summer business, the potential windfall from Champions League qualification could see them able to flex their muscles in the market.

Boubacar Kamara's expected return date for Aston Villa after knee surgery

He’s set to miss the rest of the season.

ByTom Coates Mar 18, 2024

A name recently linked with a move to Villa Park is Athletico Madrid defender, Mario Hermoso. The 28-year-old is out of contract in the summer and could add some much-needed Champions League experience to Unai Emery's side. Bringing the Spaniard in would also help negate the persistent issues Villa have suffered this season with injuries to key players in defensive areas.

Other recent rumours out of the West Midlands suggest that Villa could be in for Brazilian forward Pedro. Linked with a £25.6million move for the Flamengo man, it is clear that Emery is eager to bolster his attack during the summer window. The Villans have also held an interest in Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams who looks set to leave the Basque outfit at the end of the season.

With an attacker clearly at the forefront of NSWE's spending plans, there is no wonder why Villa are one of a host of English clubs linked with a move for a promising European striker.

Aston Villa interested in German striker

As first reported on the X account of Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Villa appear to be among a growing group of sides interested in Hoffenheim striker Maximillian Beier, saying all top eight English clubs, therefore those at Villa Park, are "monitoring" the player.

Plettenberg quotes that a figure of around £25million would be necessary to tempt the "top striker" away from Hoffenheim and a deal could be completed before the European Championships kick off in June.

With 12 goals in the league this season, Beier has attracted interest from around Europe as well as a number of clubs at the top of the German league. Making his Bundesliga debut at just 17 years of age, Beier is a player that has been playing football at the highest level since a very young age.

Now aged 21, Beier recently received his first call-up to the German national team and looks set to make his debut for his country in their upcoming games against France and the Netherlands. With the youngster looking to feature in Julian Nagelsmann's squad for the upcoming Euros, there is no doubt that Beier is set for an impressive end to the season.

Bayern's Julian Nagelsmann

If Villa are planning to find a young striker to give competition to Ollie Watkins, signing Beier could fill this role with ease, giving Emery a proven goalscorer with plenty of room to improve.
