Ratcliffe eyes surprise signing of "amazing" £10m-rated 32 y/o for Man Utd

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing an "amazing" Premier League player, with his experience and leadership a key reason despite going against INEOS' strategy of targeting young stars with big potential.

Man Utd manager & transfer latest

Erik ten Hag once again finds himself under significant pressure to keep his job as manager, following a disappointing start to the new season. Two defeats in three matches have already come the Red Devils' way, including a 3-0 loss at home to bitter rivals Liverpool, with supporters divided when it comes to wanting to keep the Dutchman or seeing him sacked.

Former England boss Gareth Southgate has been touted as a potential replacement for Ten Hag if he is relieved of his duties, but it looks as though he has enough credit in the bank for the time being, having won a trophy in each of his two seasons in charge of United to date, beating Manchester City in last season's FA Cup final.

Erik ten Hag

Away from the managerial situation, there is still a chance for the Red Devils to sign free agents and Adrien Rabiot has been linked with a move to the club. The Frenchman left Juventus at the end of last season but is yet to find another club, and he could be an inspired addition if the wages are appropriate.

The 29-year-old is a proven winner, clinching league title glory seven times in his career, and he is the most valuable free agent on the market currently, according to Transfermarkt, at £29.5m. United will also be looking at future business in January and next summer, and they appear to have eyes on a Premier League player.

Man Utd eyeing "amazing" Premier League stalwart

According to a report from Spain via Give Me Sport, Manchester United are keen on signing Brighton centre-back Lewis Dunk, with his "experience and leadership" standing out to them. The 32-year-old isn't out of contract with the Seagulls until the summer of 2026, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe could hope to lure him to Old Trafford in one of the upcoming transfer windows, with Transfermarkt setting his current value at £10m.

Dunk certainly represents a surprise target, with the report stating as much, with his career at the opposite end of the spectrum to the players INEOS have signed so far, but he could be a shrewd signing for United.

Granted, they would find it hard to offer him regular minutes once Leny Yoro is fit and Matthijs de Ligt looks at his sharpest – Lisandro Martinez is surely the first centre-back on Ten Hag's team sheet, too – but he now has a wealth of experience and could jump at the chance to play for a huge club before it is too late.

Meanwhile, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has heaped praise on his captain at the Amex Stadium, having responded impressively to making a mistake at Arsenal last weekend: "He knows it was not the best defending but for me a leader is how you react. Every player on the pitch makes a mistake. To react like this, still asking for the ball, still playing like the assist for the draw for us, it is amazing how he reacted to this mistake."

It is easy to see why United fans may not overly love this transfer rumour, given Dunk's advancing years, but he could be an upgrade on Harry Maguire and prove to be an excellent squad option for a few years.

Emery could drop Rogers by unleashing "unbelievable" Aston Villa ace

Aston Villa have no time to rest now after their breathless 3-2 win over Everton last time out in the Premier League, as Champions League football finally gets underway for Unai Emery’s excited camp on Tuesday night.

Emery would have loved the passion and drive from his team that saw them pick up a comeback win against Sean Dyche’s Toffees, hopeful that this resilience to dig deep and pick up dramatic results stands them in good stead for the esteemed tournament.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

The former Arsenal manager has, of course, managed at this level before, but many of his players have never tasted action when it comes to Europe’s elite competition.

Morgan Rogers could be one of the unlucky few to not make the cut for the starting XI against Young Boys tonight, after a wasteful showing versus Everton last time out.

Rogers' performance vs Everton

The former Manchester City youngster could find his spot taken up by a different Villa body in Switzerland, based on his poor display against the Toffees in the attacking midfield area.

Away from the likes of Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran in attack who fired home the vital goals to help Villa pick up a dramatic three points, Rogers would fluff the opportunities that fell to him, with two big chances missed off the 22-year-old’s back.

Further, the Villa number 27 might well find he’s dropped to the substitutes bench for his side’s Champions League opener owing to his constant wayward passing against Everton, with possession squandered 15 times by the attacker in total.

In stark contrast, his composed midfield teammate Youri Tielemans would register 126 accurate passes from his staggering 147 touches of the ball, with the Belgian star standing out as a creative spark constantly aiming to cut the Toffees open.

Away from his haphazard passing, Rogers was also weak in asserting himself in duels with only four successful ones managed from 15 attempted.

Tielemans will know his spot in Emery’s XI is concrete, whilst his 22-year-old counterpart will be anxious about his prospects of starting against Young Boys, as Emery assesses now what to do with his lineup if Rogers is given the boot.

The players who could replace Rogers

Of course, Emery might well keep his faith in Rogers here, who continues to look like a promising gem for Villa who just needs a little more polishing.

But, there were some exciting cameos off the bench from other midfielders last match, including the “unbelievable” Ross Barkley – as he was described by former teammate Andros Townsend – who would be comfortable playing in that lone attacking midfield spot.

The ex-Everton man would help his current employers ultimately win the back-and-forth contest against his former club, as Barkley would tee up another second-half substitute in Jhon Duran to power home a stunning long-range winner.

Alongside that, Barkley was just stylish on the ball whenever a pass came his way, with only one misplaced pass in the contest from 43 attempted.

The 30-year-old also has experience on his side when it comes to Champions League football, amassing six appearances in the illustrious competition in the past when on the books at Chelsea, before his playing days saw him return to Villa.

There could even be a tweak of formation and plenty of other changes made, with Barkley playing as a holding midfielder when thrown into the action versus the Toffees, but he’s more than comfortable at playing further forward.

Whatever line-up does take to the field in Switzerland, Emery will pray that his players give it all they have, as the high-stakes drama of Champions League football gets underway.

£100k-per-week Arteta favourite now tempted to quit Arsenal with bid ready

A player who manager Mikel Arteta really rates in the Arsenal squad appears tempted by the possibility of joining another Premier League club before deadline day.

Players who could still be sold by Arsenal this summer

Following Emile Smith Rowe's £35 million move to Fulham two weeks ago, it is believed a few more high-profile exits could occur at Arsenal before the summer window officially shuts its doors.

Reiss Nelson could be allowed to leave Arsenal as one option, while uncertainty surrounds the futures of Thomas Partey and Aaron Ramsdale. The former has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Arsenal, meaning Edu Gaspar and co may still decide to sell the Ghanaian, rather than lose him for nothing next summer.

Meanwhile, Ramsdale has been subject to an approach from Dutch giants Ajax, according to The Athletic. While the proposal was rejected, it is believed Ajax are still optimistic they can strike a deal for the 26-year-old, even if Arsenal want rid of him permanently.

In any case, Ramsdale has been widely tipped to leave Arsenal, with journalist Charles Watts recently claiming he's destined to depart the club.

"It’s a matter of when Ramsdale leaves, not if," said Watts to CaughtOffside.

“The key thing for Arsenal is getting value for money. I saw an initial fee of £15 million mentioned in reports last week and that is quite frankly ridiculous. Arsenal signed Ramsdale for nearly £30m two years ago and he has developed into a far better keeper since then.

“He’s still young, he’s homegrown, an established England international and has a long-term contract. Yes, interested clubs will know that Arsenal’s stance in any negotiations will be weakened somewhat given he is now clearly behind David Raya in the pecking order, but that shouldn’t mean the club should basically give him away."

Meanwhile, striker Eddie Nketiah has attracted interest from Marseille this window, but the Ligue 1 giants have pulled out – leaving the door open for Bournemouth to swoop in.

Nketiah open to joining Bournemouth as they ready bid for Arsenal

According to TEAMtalk, Nketiah is open to joining Bournemouth from Arsenal as the Cherries ready a late bid for him.

Andoni Iraola needs a replacement for striker Dominic Solanke, who joined Tottenham in a £65 million deal earlier this week, and Arsenal's £100,000-per-week forward fits the bill. However, since then, Bournemouth have agreed a deal to sign Evanlison from FC Porto, so it remains to be seen what their stance now is on Nketiah.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Nketiah is a favourite of Arteta's, with the Spaniard highlighting his quality time and time again, even if both Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus remain above him in the pecking order.

"Well to me he is top level,” said Arteta on Nketiah at the start of last season.

“He’s started nine out of our ten Premier League games, so that tells you how much we trust him and the importance he has in the team. I’m really happy for him, an academy player to experience a Premier League hat-trick. He needs to enjoy the moment, he fully deserves it, and hopefully there are many more to come."

Sky Sports: Man Utd in "advanced" talks to sign new £130,000-a-week player

Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign a "terrific" £130k-a-week player this summer, according to an update from Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Man Utd transfer rumours

The Red Devils have made a promising start to their summer transfer window, with Joshua Zirzkee and Leny Yoro representing exciting young signings, steering away from the previous approach of signing older players.

United's spending is highly unlikely to stop there, however, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to complete various pieces of business, and Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries has been linked with a summer move to Old Trafford. Talks have been held with the Dutchman, with a potential swap deal with Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the cards.

Meanwhile, central midfield looks like a key area of focus for Erik ten Hag this summer, with his former player at Ajax, Frenkie de Jong, one rumoured option again. Manuel Ugarte is seen as another option, with the Uruguayan keen on joining United and leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

Real Sociedad's impressive midfielder Martin Zubimendi is also a reported target for Ratcliffe and INEOS, having sealed Euro 2024 glory with Spain earlier this summer, producing an impressive individual second-half performance in the final against England.

Man Utd "pushing" to sign Bayern player with talks "advanced"

Taking to X, Plettenberg claimed that Manchester United are "pushing" to sign Bayern Munich full-back Noussair Mazraouri and talks are "advanced", with West Ham's move for him now off:

Full-back does need to be looked at as an important position to bring in reinforcements, even though Luke Shaw remains an excellent option when he is fit and firing on the left-hand side. The problem is, the Englishman struggles to stay fit too often these days, and turns 30 next year, so it is important that a top-quality successor is lined up.

The £130,000-a-week Mazraoui could provide cover at left-back, although he is primarily a right-back, having made 55 appearances for Bayern, showing that he can perform for one of the biggest clubs in Europe. That means he shouldn't be daunted by joining United, and could slot straight in, and former manager Julian Nagelsmann has lauded him in the past, saying:

"Terrific! He had good attacking moments but also defended well. He has done exceptionally well and has more confidence in himself. He will start tomorrow and can show what he's capable of."

At 26, Mazraoui is both hugely experienced and still young enough to find another gear, and it looks as if a deal is one to watch over the coming days following this update.

Jobe Bellingham told 'right moment to leave' Sunderland amid talk of £20m transfer seeing him emulate brother Jude with Borussia Dortmund switch

Jobe Bellingham has been informed of the “right moment to leave” Sunderland, amid talk of him emulating brother Jude and joining Borussia Dortmund.

Back in 2020, after making a senior breakthrough with Birmingham at just 16 years of age, Jude Bellingham took the brave decision to leave English football and head to Germany. That call has paid off, with the 21-year-old midfielder now a Champions League winner at Real Madrid and a Ballon d’Or contender.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

It is being suggested that Jobe could soon head down a similar path, with the 19-year-old – who also started out at St Andrew’s – attracting admiring glances from afar. Sunderland are reluctant to part with a prized asset and are said to have placed a £20 million ($25m) price tag around Bellingham’s neck.

Getty ImagesWHAT SUNDERLAND BOSS SAID

They accept that sales may need to be sanctioned at some point, with Chris Rigg another of those to be generating exit talk, but Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris has mapped out future plans when saying: “I think with these players, they are involved in the project, and they know that they can improve in this team. So, from a personal perspective, it is good for them, and also to be part of this journey as well.

“It is rare to have this. Sometimes, you can go a whole career without having these elements – where you are in a club, you like that club, you are improving, and you believe in a very interesting journey. I think it is important for them to be here until the challenge is not high enough for them. Probably, when they feel that they need something more to develop, that should be the right moment to leave.

“But at the minute, for both players, I think they are still in the right zone for their career development. They need to play, and they need to learn. They need to learn about playing in a collective style, so for them, I think the culture we have here is still working for them. I think the graph of their learning is still going up at a good level.”

WHAT NEXT?

Sunderland have Bellingham tied to a contract through to the summer of 2028, so are under no pressure to sell unless they receive an offer that is impossible to turn down. The likes of Dortmund will, however, continue to monitor his progress on Wearside having already unearthed considerable value in Jude.

India name Prithvi Shaw, Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav in XI for first Test

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant were left out of the day-night Test

Sidharth Monga16-Dec-202011:31

Did India make the right selection calls?

Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin and Prithvi Shaw have been named to represent India in the Adelaide Test. Umesh Yadav will be the third seamer. These were the main questions India were contemplating two days before the Test: whether to continue backing the flamboyant Shaw, whether to play a spinner and persist with the safer option of Ashwin, and which of the wicketkeepers to play. On the eve of the day-night Test, they settled all the confusion by naming the XI.Shaw had come under pressure with Shubman Gill faring better in the two tour games, in the process impressing the likes of Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar, the legends after whom the series is named. However, Shaw was the incumbent opener and showed in one innings out of four in New Zealand that he can be destructive. He scored 0, 19, 40 and 3 in the two tour games, but more than the scores it was his loose shots that worried Gavaskar and Border. It is understood, though, that with a settled middle order in place, India wanted continuity at the top too and went with the incumbent.India announced their XI a day before the Adelaide Test•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Similarly, the incumbent Test spinner – especially with Ravindra Jadeja’s absence due to injury and concussion – kept his place. The last time India chose against Ashwin in a series opener was on Australia’s tour of 2014-15, a move that was criticised for blooding in Karn Sharma, whose lack of experience showed on a pitch where Australia’s spinner Nathan Lyon proved to be the gamechanger.Reasonable as it is to play Ashwin, this time around, there could have been a case made for not playing a spinner at all in the series opener because in day-night Tests in Australia, spinners have averaged 49 despite Lyon’s superlative average of 25 in these matches. Lyon’s success is perhaps a sign that world-class spinners have a chance to correct these statistics based on a small sample size of seven Tests. There is no doubt that Ashwin and Lyon have been the two premier spinners in Test cricket, followed only slightly behind by Jadeja, over this decade.Related

In the case of the wicketkeeper, however, India dropped the incumbent Pant, who has been preferred to Saha in Tests outside Asia where most of the wicketkeeping is done standing back. It is in India that the team management believes Saha’s superior wicketkeeping skills come into play when standing up to the spinners. The team management seems to have decided that the pink ball does a lot and will require a more established pure wicketkeeper. And Pant’s century in the SCG warm-up notwithstanding, he did have an ordinary New Zealand tour, scoring 60 runs in four innings. He is yet to play for India in any international cricket since then.Yadav was the frontrunner to be India’s third seamer, replacing the injured Ishant Sharma. Not only does he have Test experience – this is his fourth Australia tour – he also impressed in the only warm-up game he played, taking 3 for 48 and 1 for 14 and also scoring handy runs down the order.India XI: 1 Mayank Agarwal, 2 Prithvi Shaw, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt.), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Hanuma Vihari, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Jasprit Bumrah

Fabrizio Romano: Birmingham now "leading" race to secure £300,000+ transfer

Birmingham City are thought to be one of the clubs leading the race to sign a £300,000+ player, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Birmingham appoint Chris Davies as new manager

The Blues finally appointed a new manager to replace Tony Mowbray earlier this month, with Chris Davies leaving his role as Tottenham Hotspur assistant to take the St Andrews vacancy. Talking to the media after joining, Davies has said:

"I've been ready to be a manager for quite a few years. I always felt like a manager, like a number one. I've had a lot of responsibility at big clubs with the managers I've worked with. Now I'm the decision maker and the buck stops with me but I prefer that.

"It was about the right club, the right fit and the right time. I already had a great job at a great club, but my gut feeling was that this was a club which reflected my own ambition. I was over in the Maldives with the family when this all happened, but these types of opportunities are important to capture."

A newly relegated Birmingham, backed by Tom Wagner and Tom Brady's Knighthead Group, will be looking to win promotion out of League One at the first time of asking. To do that, new signings could be targeted ahead of Davies’ first campaign as a senior manager, and by the looks of it, the club are looking to make their mark in the transfer window.

Birmingham “leading” Marc Leonard transfer race

According to Romano, Birmingham are one of three clubs “leading” the race to sign Brighton & Hove Albion’s Marc Leonard. The Blues are joined by Championship side Oxford United and new League One rivals Wrexham for Leonard, who is likely to cost in excess of £300,000 when add-ons are factored in.

The 22-year-old made the move to Brighton from Hearts as a teenager back in 2018, initially turning out in their U18 team before progressing to the U23s and has gone on to turn out twice for the Seagulls’ first team.

Leonard has also had two separate loan spells with Northampton Town, making 97 senior appearances for the club in total, scoring six times and registering seven assists. He won Northampton’s Player of the Season for the 2023/24 campaign, collecting 80% of the vote, while also picking up the Players' Player of the Season award.

His long-term future could now be away from Brighton following an impressive loan spell with Northampton, and by the looks of it, Birmingham are pushing to bring him to the Midlands and potentially make him a key part of their plans under Davies.
