Johnny Mullagh belatedly inducted to Australian Hall of Fame

Mullagh was the outstanding member of the Aboriginal team that toured England in 1868

Daniel Brettig28-Dec-2020No-one in the history of Australian cricket has waited longer for induction to the game’s hall of fame than the 152 years since Johnny Mullagh made his name as the outstanding member of the Aboriginal team that toured England in 1868.Mullagh’s belated induction to a hall of fame, that has until now been populated purely by white cricketers, takes Cricket Australia closer to righting the many wrongs of the game’s history in relation to Aboriginal Australia, along similar lines to the efforts being made among the current generation of elite male and female players. But it speaks volumes for how far the game’s custodians need to go to better acknowledge lesser-known pockets of the game’s history that Mullagh, from the Wimmera region of western Victoria, is not only the first Aboriginal cricket to enter the hall of fame, but also the first person of colour.Related

The Indigenous hole at Australian cricket's heart

Prior to Mullagh, whose image will also adorn the medal awarded to the winner of the individual match award for the Boxing Day Test this year, the list of the game’s inducted greats also served as a reminder of how monocultural Australian cricket’s corridors of achievement and power have commonly been. The 54 names previously inducted in order since 1996 are a roll call of not just whiteness but narrow western European origins:Fred Spofforth, John Blackham, Victor Trumper, Clarrie Grimmett, Bill Ponsford, Sir Donald Bradman, Bill O’Reilly, Keith Miller, Ray Lindwall, Dennis Lillee, Warwick Armstrong, Neil Harvey, Allan Border, Bill Woodfull, Arthur Morris, Stan McCabe, Greg Chappell, Lindsay Hassett, Ian Chappell, Hugh Trumble, Alan Davidson, Clem Hill, Rod Marsh, Monty Noble, Bob Simpson, Charles Macartney, Richie Benaud, George Giffen, Ian Healy, Steve Waugh, Bill Lawry, Graham McKenzie, Mark Taylor, Doug Walters, Shane Warne, Charlie Turner, Glenn McGrath, Mark Waugh, Belinda Clark, Adam Gilchrist, Jack Ryder, Jeff Thomson, Wally Grout, David Boon, Matthew Hayden, Betty Wilson, Norm O’Neill, Ricky Ponting, Karen Rolton, Cathryn Fitzpatrick, Dean Jones, Billy Murdoch, Sharon Tredrea and Craig McDermott.Criteria for inclusion has traditionally been based on the strict requirement of playing at least 20 Test matches, scoring at least 1000 runs or taking at least 100 wickets. Mullagh doesn’t fit that, but Ian Chappell had twice put his name forward to be added to the Hall of FameThe hall of fame’s chairman, Peter King, described Mullagh’s omission from this list for the first 24 years of inductees as an “oversight” by its judges. “This was probably a bit of an oversight in retrospect,” he said. “We have chosen Johnny as a representative of that era … The ongoing inductee criteria hasn’t changed beyond that. That record speaks for itself and really should have been acknowledged previously. He was a standout in that era.”In this case we wanted to acknowledge the impact Indigenous players have had on the game. That was a decision we made, which I think is a great decision. His record pretty much speaks for itself and it really should have been acknowledged previously, but he’s a stand out character in that era.”It’s a little bit difficult to get a lot of background on it, we’ve been searching for people related to Johnny but we’ve been unsuccessful in that pursuit at this point. He was born in 1841, he was about 50 when he died and he was about 27 when he went on the tour to England. There’s some patchy information around the rest of his career.”Among other notable Aboriginal figures in Australian cricket, Aunty Faith Thomas stands as the first ever Indigenous woman to represent Australia in sport, playing her one and only Test match against England in February 1958. In more contemporary times, Jason Gillespie played the last of his 71 Tests for Australia in 2006, claiming 259 wickets and also scoring a memorable double century against Bangladesh – he has been eligible for inclusion since 2011, five years after retirement. Both must be in contention to be inducted in coming years.”I think this is really opening the way to the future, and hopefully going to be engaging a lot more with Indigenous talent,” King said. “We’ve seen this in other sports and I think there’s opportunities for cricket to embrace that relationship with Indigenous people a lot more strongly. They were the first touring team to travel outside of Australia, so they did pave the way and hopefully this will open a bit more of an engagement opportunity with the rest of the talent that’s out there.”Australia’s captain Tim Paine and his deputy Pat Cummins, recently discussed their ignorance of the many private battles fought by cricketers of colour. “My learnings are how much it affects some of my teammates and me being unaware of that for probably 15 years as a professional cricketer,” Paine said. “So just the shift in that now.”

'Jason Holder always in consideration for T20s' – Phil Simmons

Says selectors had to leave him out of T20I squad because of packed schedule for New Zealand tour

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Nov-2020

Phil Simmons and Jason Holder have a chat•AFP

Phil Simmons, the West Indies coach, has said that Test captain Jason Holder “always in consideration” for the shortest format despite not being part of the T20I squad for the tour of New Zealand. Before Kieron Pollard took over the white-ball captaincy last September, Holder was West Indies’ captain in all formats. But since December 2019, Holder hasn’t featured in a T20I, despite impressive performances in the CPL and the ongoing IPL, strengthening his case for a comeback to the national side.Although the Barbados Tridents finished second from last under Holder in the CPL, he was their best player last season with 192 runs at an average of 21.33, a strike rate of 140.14 and ten wickets at an economy of 6.63. In the IPL, he has been instrumental in giving the Sunrisers Hyderabad a shot at the final. Coming in as a replacement for the injured Mitchell Marsh, Holder has picked up 13 wickets from just six games at an economy of 7.62. With the bat, too, he has played a couple of crucial knocks.According to Simmons, though, the decision to not include him in the T20I side was taken keeping in mind the packed tour. West Indies are scheduled to play three T20Is in four days followed by two Tests, with a gap of just two days between the two series.”Jason always has a chance to play T20 cricket,” Simmons said. “Let me just clear it up here. This is an odd tour here. The T20 series finishes a day or two days before the first Test match and [Holder] being captain of the Test team, a decision was taken by us as a selection panel that Jason will not be considered for that part. Seeing that he is coming from IPL, he will have one chance to play in the four-day game before the Test match.”But Jason is always in consideration for T20s. He had two good years at the CPL and now he is having a good tournament at the IPL.”West Indies will also be without Dwayne Bravo for the T20I series. The allrounder sustained a groin injury while playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and was subsequently replaced by Romario Shepherd. Simmons was a bit concerned due to Bravo’s injury, but given the next T20 World Cup is still a year away, he felt there was enough time for him to prove his fitness.”It’s a concern because he was injured in the CPL and he is injured in the IPL,” he said. “But there is a break now. He is going to go back home and do what is necessary for him to be fit enough to play. There are a few series, there is another IPL I think before the World Cup, so there are a lot of chances for him to go and get himself fit and we will see what his fitness is like leading up to the tournament.

Eoin Morgan hails bowlers' belief as England steal improbable epic

Tom Curran and Chris Jordan praised for holding nerve as England close out two-run win

Matt Roller04-Sep-2020Eoin Morgan has hailed his bowling attack’s belief in their own strengths after Australia’s late-innings implosion allowed England to squeeze out a two-run win in the first T20I at the Ageas Bowl on Friday night.Australia needed 39 from 36 balls at the start of Adil Rashid’s final over, but he removed both Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell to give England an opening. That meant Morgan gave Jofra Archer and Mark Wood their respective final overs earlier than anticipated as he looked to expose Australia’s main weakness – their lack of power below No. 4 – and he was rewarded when they removed David Warner and Alex Carey respectively.Morgan admitted that Australia had been “in command for the majority” of the run-chase, but he credited his bowlers’ ability with the old white ball for delivering a series of breakthroughs, allowing them a foothold in a game that appeared to have slipped away.”We have talked as a side about making inroads and when we do, we have threats to take maybe two or three at a time,” Morgan said. “Some of our pace bowlers and Adil have posed that threat, making it particularly difficult for people coming in and facing them straight away.”I think after Moeen’s over, things started to turn for us. We got the ball reverse-swinging a little bit, but again, creating that opportunity with Adil getting Maxwell and Smith created that opportunity.””I thought we might end up running out of our best bowlers earlier, but they seemed to continue to take risks, particularly against Adil and then Jof came back earlier as a consequence of that.”ALSO READ: England storm back to choke chase and take 1-0 series leadMorgan said that after Australia’s fast start – Aaron Finch and Warner put on 98 for the first wicket in 11 overs – England had little choice but to look for wickets, and he was prepared to lose the game by a significant margin rather than take it deep but never look like getting back into it.”We needed to take wickets to try and stay in the game. I don’t mind if we lose the game inside 16 overs.,” he said. “To try and win the game is the priority, so you have to chase your tail a little bit or come up with different things.”I’m delighted the guys showed belief and courage to do something to take wickets, and that was displayed a lot in the last six overs when we held our length a lot because it was the hardest to hit.”Over two years ago we would have gone to bowling yorkers or slower balls which would have brought Australia back into the game. It was great that we stuck to our guns.”Morgan gave particular praise to Tom Curran – who held his nerve after being hit for six by Marcus Stoinis to leave Australia needing nine to win from the final four balls – and Chris Jordan, who bowled a brilliant 19th over on the night he won his 50th T20I cap.”In the winter it was very similar in New Zealand and South Africa where Chris Jordan and Tom Curran led the attack and took the responsibility,” Morgan said. “It is quite a weighty responsibility but they see an opportunity to take the team forward and lead the team and they do it very well.”For Tom, the game that sticks out in particular is the game at Durban and then again tonight with him closing it out.”We have shown a lot of faith in [Jordan] because he has earned it. He has been one of our greatest ever bowlers and only sits behind Broady in the lead wicket-takers. To have someone like that who is calm, even when he is not bowling and continuing to offer on and off the pitch.”For younger guys coming through, I think he sets a great example and given he has only come back from surgery recently, he has done a great job.”

Tim Bresnan joins Warwickshire on two-year deal

Tim Bresnan, the former England and Yorkshire allrounder, has joined Warwickshire on a two-year deal that will keep him at Edgbaston until the end of the 2022 season.Bresnan will join the club initially on a loan deal, subject to ECB clearance, which covers the remainder of the 2020 county season.”I’m thrilled to be joining Warwickshire,” said Bresnan. “It’s a club that I’ve always admired, and I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed playing at Edgbaston with Yorkshire and England.”I’ve had some great conversations with Paul Farbrace about the way that he plans to take the club forwards, and I see this move as a great fit for both of us. I have still got a strong desire to continuing playing at the top level and to win, so hopefully I can pass on a bit of my experience to the young players who are coming through.”I know quite a few of the players well, so I can’t wait to move down and get cracking.”Born in Pontefract, Bresnan enjoyed a 19-year career at Yorkshire, and played a lead role in the side that won back-to-back County Championships in the 2014 and 2015 seasons. At international level, he was part of the England teams that won the ICC men’s World T20 in the Caribbean in 2010 and reached No.1 in the ICC Test world rankings in 2011. He also was part of England’s Ashes-winning squad in 2010-11, playing a key role in the series-sealing wins at Melbourne and Sydney.Paul Farbrace, Sport Director at Warwickshire CCC, said: “With multiple trophies to his name, Tim is a winner and he knows exactly what it takes to perform and to ultimately succeed at the highest level.”He has vast experience of bowling in the powerplays and of closing out games with the ball and bat in both white ball formats. In First Class cricket, he has the ability to bowl long and challenging spells and also produce game-changing innings.”With several young, homegrown players coming through, we also see Tim’s experience as a great asset to help these players understand what is required to reach their potential and be part of a Warwickshire team that can challenge for trophies. Having him on board is a fantastic move for the Club.”Warwickshire announced yesterday that its men’s squad will return to training on July 1 in preparation for the delayed start to the 2020 county season on August 1. Details of the formats and fixture list will be revealed by the England & Wales Cricket Board in the coming weeks.

R Ashwin, Keshav Maharaj, Nicholas Pooran's Yorkshire contracts terminated

Overseas trio become latest players to have county contracts cancelled

R Ashwin had been due to play for Yorkshire in the County Championship•BCCI

Yorkshire have announced that their three overseas signings for the 2020 season – R Ashwin, Keshav Maharaj and Nicholas Pooran – have had their contract terminated by mutual consent.Ashwin, who has previously played county cricket for Worcestershire and Nottinghamshire, had been due to play the majority of the County Championship season, while Pooran was set to re-join the club for the T20 Blast having played three times in the competition last summer. Maharaj had been due to play the first two games of the County Championship season. All professional cricket in England and Wales has been suspended until July 1 at the earliest due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and several counties have now cancelled contracts for their overseas players both as a cost-saving measure and as a reflection of the uncertainties surrounding international travel.”I really appreciate the players’ understanding in this matter,” said Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket. “We have been in regular contact with the players and their agents throughout this Covid pandemic.”They have been extremely professional and appreciate the uncertainty facing counties at present. We hope that we will be able to see them at Emerald Headingley in the future.”

Chelsea’s 8/10 ace won ten duels and was even better than Jackson vs Spurs

Well, that was a little more straightforward than most were probably expecting it would be.

Despite a season of disappointing results in the Premier League, an injury list a mile long, and a bench full of teenagers, Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea quite comfortably dispatched an almost full-strength Tottenham Hotspur side last night, much to the delight of Samford Bridge.

There were several brilliant performances from the men in Blue, and while Nicolas Jackson stood out thanks to his goal, there was another starter who was even better, and somehow, it wasn't Cole Palmer.

Nicolas Jackson's performance vs Tottenham

Jackson must love playing against Spurs as he has now scored 36% of his league goals against the Lilywhites after netting for the 11th time in the competition in the second half of last night's game.

However, it wasn't just the goal that won the 22-year-old plaudits on the night; it was his all-around game. While he might have made a few errors here and there, he was a real thorn in Spurs' side for most of the game.

He impressed football.london's Bobby Vincent on the night, with the journalist awarding the Senegalese international an 8/10 for his efforts and writing that his header was 'poacher-esque.'

However, if there are still some out there unconvinced, then they only need to take a look at his numbers from the game, as in his 89 minutes of football, he scored once, succeeded in two of his three dribbles, took two shots on target, took 30 touches, won nine of 16 duels, won a foul and even made four tackles.

Overall, it was an impressive showing from the relatively inexperienced striker that should leave fans feeling encouraged about his future at the club, although he wasn't the best player on the night.

Moises Caicedo's performance vs Tottenham

Yes, the player who deserves even more credit than Jackson after last night's win is the £115m man, Moises Caicedo.

The Ecuadorian international might not have got on the scoresheet – or even provided an assist for that matter – but his performance in the middle of the park was exemplary and served as a reminder to his detractors what he could be like in a winning team.

Vincent was full of praise for the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace on the night, giving him an 8/10 and writing that it was 'a tremendous performance' from the 'energetic midfielder.'

This assessment of the 22-year-old's showing is backed up by his numbers. In the 96 minutes he spent on the pitch, he took 62 touches, won ten out of 12 duels, won four fouls, made five tackles, two blocks, one clearance, and one interception, didn't commit a single foul, and wasn't dribbled past once either.

Ultimately, the all-action star didn't directly contribute to either of Chelsea's goals on the night, but his overall performance cannot be overlooked as, alongside his midfield partners, he helped run the game for the Blues and was the best player on the pitch.

Spurs line up move for £60m star who’d be their new Eriksen

If you ask any Tottenham Hotspur fan what period in recent times was the most enjoyable and successful, almost every individual would say the run from 2015–19.

The core of that success involved the likes of Heung-min Son, Harry Kane, and Jan Vertonghen, but there was one player who was just as influential.

The player in question is Christian Eriksen, who featured in 305 matches for the Lilywhites, scoring 69 times and providing 90 assists.

New boss Ange Postecoglou is keen to strengthen his midfield this summer, and on his radar is a highly-rated Eriksen clone.

Spurs’ search for a new midfielder

As per a recent report from Ben Jacobs via CaughtOffside, Spurs are seriously interested in signing Giorgiy Sudakov.

The Ukrainian star plays for Shakhtar Donetsk, who are known to be difficult to deal with in regards to transfers.

Heorhiy Sudakov for Shakhtar

Despite having an incredible £128m release clause in his contract, it’s reported that a fee of around £60m will likely be enough to secure his services in the summer.

However, if Spurs do go ahead with attempting to sign the midfielder, they will face competition from European giants such as Inter and Juventus.

Spurs have a "generational" teen talent who could be the new Dele Alli

This star could rival players such as James Maddison for a spot in Postecoglou’s first-team in good time.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 17, 2024 Sudakov would be a James Maddison rival

James Maddison’s start to life at Tottenham couldn’t have gone any smoother, with the £40m man scoring twice and assisting twice in his first four league matches.

However, an injury against Chelsea earlier this season saw him miss 13 games of action, and since then, he’s not been quite as impactful, failing to register a goal contribution in his last five matches.

Nonetheless, the interest in Sudakov highlights one of two things: either Postecoglou isn’t entirely happy with Maddison being his first choice number ten, or he intends to tweak the system next season.

The 21-year-old star is an attacking midfielder by trade, but he’s already shown that he can comfortably play as a left midfielder or slightly deeper as a box-to-box this season.

As you can see by the table above, the number 10 has shown that he can compete against the very best, as he starred in the Champions League against Barcelona earlier this season.

Playing away to Barca is often a daunting prospect for the most experienced players, but Sudakov proved that he’s not afraid of any challenge, as he was constantly a threat against the La Liga side.

What this game highlighted in particular was that the Ukraine star doesn’t only create, but he’s also a goal-scorer. The fact that he’s netted seven goals in 28 appearances this season further supports that.

Another aspect that was impressive was the way he dazzled the Barca midfield with his dribbling, completing 100% of his take-ons, which certainly highlights his technical ability.

Furthermore, the fact that he had 62 touches and completed 40 passes proves that he’s an extremely confident individual who is desperate to put his stamp on the game, which is what Tottenham need right now in particular.

Georgiy Sudakov for Shakhtar Donetsk.

What makes this potential move even more interesting is the fact that football scout Jacek Kulig has previously compared Sudakov to Eriksen, with the player's range of passing, creativity, and set piece mastery alike.

Sudakov, therefore, is most definitely a promising talent, but surely Spurs wouldn’t spend £60m on a Maddison backup? Either way, the thought of welcoming another Eriksen to north London will be a tantalising one.
